JJ Prum: Apex Mosel Riesling 9-4-24

“Few estates in the world can claim to have maintained the highest quality standards uninterrupted for half a century and more. Joh Jos Prum… is one estate that can.”

Apex Mosel Riesling

On Sale Now!

Manfred and Katarina Prüm make some of the finest and most sought-after wines of the middle-Mosel. These reference-point Mosel Rieslings are some of the most profound and age-worthy white wines in the world. No other producer in the middle Mosel is as respected or collectible. These white wines have near-unparalleled consistency in aging worldwide.

The Prüm wines are high-wire acts of tension between fruit and intense minerality. By some subtle alchemy, the wines spring forth from the parcels of mostly old, ungrafted vines through spontaneous fermentation and a dash of magic in the cellar. The results are deeply expressive of their terroir.

Though Johann Josef Prüm founded the estate in 1911, the family has made wine in Wehlen for centuries. Their largest holdings are in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. These wines are their most sought-after, but their holdings in Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Badstube, and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr are no less masterful.

Not familiar with the vineyards? Let’s explore below!

Wehlener Sonnenuhr’s soil is the famous Devonian blue slate, which imparts intense minerality to the resulting wines. The vineyard, as with JJ Prum’s sites, overlooks the Mosel River. Vines grow along precipitously steep banks across the river from the village of Wehlen. These produce wines with layers of minerality, fruit, and structure. The wines represent some of the finest in Prüm’s illustrious portfolio.

Zeltinger Sonnenuhr shares a border (and the sundial) with Wehlenher Sonnenuhr. Though the best-known wines from this vineyard are produced by Selbach-Oster, JJ Prum has a small holding here of 60- to 70-year-old vines. The soils are shallower than in Wehlen, so the vines struggle to find water. The result are complex, racy, and powerful wines.

Graacher Himmelreich is the largest of vineyard in the village of Graach. The soils here are blue slate and weathered clay, and the vines produce astounding wines particularly in warm vintages. Just like Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the wines are notable for their intense minerality and long life in the cellar. The wines are stony with citrus-inflections and crisp acidity.

Further down the Mosel at a sharp bend is the village of Bernkastel, where we find Bernkasteler Badstube and Bernkasteler Lay. The name “Badstube” is in reference to the hot springs near the village that became famous during the Middle Ages. Despite the following naming conventions for a single-vineyard wine, Bernkasteler Badstube actually refers to the collection of six vineyards. Wines with this designation can come from any mix of the sites, though it would be an oversight to think of Bernkasteler Badstube as a mere village wine. Even the VDP designates it as a Grosse Lage, or Great Growth. The six vineyards include some of the most famous vineyards in the world of wine. The wines tend to be racy and floral with lively acidity and a long aging potential.

The tiny Bernkasteler Lay (pronounced “lie”) vineyard is a long strip of a vineyard that extends from a sharp bend in the river. The soils in Lay are blue slate, imparting rich texture and minerality to the wines. It rivals Doktor for the most prestigious vineyard in Bernkastel, if not the world.

Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 94 points
“The nose of the 2021 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Kabinett still has a touch of reduction, but underneath, an immense, bright, fruity juiciness reminiscent of Cox Orange Pippin apple and green Conference pear appears. More air brings almost a hint of elderflower. The palate is beautifully light with exquisite, dancing, light-footed balance. A textbook Kabinett – tender and playful with immense elegance and delicacy, luminous with vivid lemon acidity, tinged with traces of lime.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points
“This reminds me so much of English hedgerows in summer with their diversity of flowers, berries and herbs. Cool and elegant in spite of the impressive ripeness on the medium-bodied palate. Very polished through the impeccably balanced, subtle finish. Hard to believe that analytically this must have a significant amount of grape sweetness, because it’s almost invisible. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule (LGK) 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $189, that’s $179.55 at 5% off and $170.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Joh. Jos. Prum Bernkasteler Lay Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule (LGK) 2017 375ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“The 2017 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese (Long Gold Capsule), AP 18 18, is very clear, intense and generous but precise on the nose, with lots of mango, ripe peach, mirabelle and honey aromas. On the palate, this is a generously rich but refined, finessed and lush Auslese with a salty-piquant finish that is intense, complex and long. Honey-sweet but still crystalline, transparent and really kicking, this is another gorgeous 2017 Auslese from the Prüm family. Tasted in March 2019.”
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points “The 2017er Bernkasteler Lay Auslese lange GK delivers an almost exuberant nose (at least f or Joh. Jos. Prüm standards) of mango, ripe pineapple, acacia honey, caraway, gingerbread, star anise and pear puree all pepped up by a fleeting touch of volatile acidity. The wine proves lusciously generous and slightly oily on the palate driven by flavors of almond paste, candied exotic fruits and honey. This small BA in the making is quite impressive. 2027-2057.”

Highlights from Graach:

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 16 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points
“This very concentrated and super-elegant riesling Auslese is still tightly-wound. However, it already has a very wide spectrum of subtle yellow fruit and wild flower aromas. Terrific structure behind the rich, but still medium-bodied palate. Incredibly long, slatey finish with staggering freshness that pulls you back for more of this Mosel masterpiece. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49.90, that’s $47.41 at 5% off and $44.91 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 92+ points
“The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese offers a quite rich and even slightly ripe nose of almond cream and bakery products as well as honeyed yellow peach, William’s pear, apricot, and anise, all wrapped into smoky and refined elements. The wine coats the palate with ample and sweet fruits, which give a smoother and ampler structure to the wine. The finish has however more presence and intensity, but still needs to integrate its tale of initial sweetness. This clearly has some upside potential as it gains finesse and elegance over time. 2028-2045.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56, that’s $53.20 at 5% off and $50.40 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points
“Striking nose of garden herbs with just a hint wet earth underlining the delicate white tree fruit aromas. Stunning concentration and energy on the super-straight medium-bodied palate. Very long, almost perfectly balanced finish that is surprising for this category at this early stage in the wine’s development. Great slate expression. Drink or hold.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 20 half-bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“This feels like it’s holding back a little on the floral, apricot, lime and slate flavors. Light-bodied and graceful, this is well-structured and focused on the lingering finish. Reveals just a touch of earthiness that should disappear with aeration (as this did) or age. Best from 2024 through 2045. —B.S.”
Mosel Fine Wines 93+ points “The 2020er Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese offers a beautifully pure and ripe nose of smoke, grapefruit, lime, vineyard peach, minty herbs, and bacon-driven aromatics from residual from its spontaneous fermentation. The wine coats the palate with gorgeously ripe and juicy notes of fruits and leaves a superbly pure, smooth, and almost soft and suave feel in the hugely long finish. The aftertaste is still loaded with sweetness in need of integration, which will need quite some time to integrate. There is upside potential as the wine gains finesse with age. 2035-2050+.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points
“What a fantastic bouquet! The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. 8% alcohol.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points “A stunning Auslese with a delicate floral-honey character and a slew of yellow fruits. This is very seductive. The finish is very long and creamy. Drink or hold.”

“A very great Mosel Auslese with the combination of enormous concentration, exotic ripeness and vibrancy that we expect from the very top producers of this style. What a fantastic interplay of grape sweetness and aromatic richness with an underlying slatey acidity that makes this so pure and straight. Drink or hold.”

Highlights from Wehlen:

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett greets one with a superbly aromatic and refined floral nose of tangerine, candied grapefruit, minty herbs, some floral nuances, and yellow peach. The wine is very delicate and rather smooth on the spicy and suave palate. The finish proves tight and lean as some fine zesty elements come through and add a very playful and truly Kabinett footprint. The wine combines a feeling of light ripeness and cool freshness and proves a very successful Kabinett. 2028-2040.”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points
“Here is a great Mosel Kabinett that needs a bit more time to show what it is really made of. Still very young with a pronounced yeasty character that slowly recedes with aeration, but the white peach and honeysuckle aromas that emerge are stunning. Extremely vibrant and precise, the slatey acidity making this fabulously graceful. As pure as an Alpine stream running with glacier water. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 35 half-bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 94 points
“The 2020er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a gorgeously attractive and ripe nose of almond cream, honeyed peach, smoke, tangerine, orange zest, candied grapefruit, and apricot. The wine is luscious and proves well on the sweet side on the palate. There is presence and intensity, yet the finish is already airier and more refined than what one could initially expect. Patience will be required, as usual, for the wine to develop its full complexity and integrate all its elements. 2035-2050.”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule (GK) 2016 375ml Displayed Price: $66, that’s $62.70 at 5% off and $59.40 at 10% off, 7 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is clear, fine and subtle yet concentrated, with vegetal and ripe fruit aromas. Rich, round and piquant, this is an intense and densely woven Auslese (AP 14 17) with a long, tensioned and refreshing mineral finish that lifts the sweet fruit. Gorgeous but made for another decade.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 96 points “Super elegant and filigree with a delicacy that you don’t find in many other high-end white wines regardless of grape variety and region of origin. A very long and clean finish. Drink or hold.”

Highlights from Zelting:

Joh. Jos. Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $45, that’s $42.75 at 5% off and $40.50 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 93 points
“The 2020er Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese still proves flinty, quite smoky, and reductive at first before it almost reluctantly reveals its super nose made of stone fruits, vineyard peach, Conference pear, anise, and herbs. The wine is carried by a beautifully ripe and zesty acidity running through the palate which lifts up the ripe flavors of apricot, almond cream, and pineapple. The finish is light-weighted, very precise, and focused. This is a beautiful Spätlese. 2028-2045.”
