JC Somers
Jay Somers and Ronda Newell-Somers have been making waves in the Willamette Valley wine scene for almost 30 years. Best known for their previous winery, J. Christopher, which they founded in 1996 and have since parted ways from. Those longing for the glory days of J. Christopher are in luck: Jay and Ronda’s new project, JC Somers, brings you that impeccable quality and ridiculous value that you’ve come to expect.
How do we know? Aside from tasting through these, we know the pedigree. They’re still working with the vines that made them famous, including some of the finest vineyards in the Dundee Hills: Abbey Ridge, Bella Vida, and La Colina, as well as Croft, their longtime source for delectable Sauvignon Blanc. All of their terroir is sustainable and dry-farmed, grown by close friends they’ve known for decades. Their goal is to craft “focused, elegant and terroir driven wines.” And we know they’ve succeeded.
These bottles bring you the high-quality wine and terroir you’d come to expect from this dynamic duo with the energy and zeal of a new kid on the block. And it’s on sale right now.

J.C. Somers ‘Joie de Chien’ Sauvignon Blanc 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $19, that’s $18.05 at 5% off and $17.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Jay Somers Note “This is 100% Croft organically grown fruit. I had to move from my space in Carlton up to Anne Amie half way through aging so the 22 Croft was racked to several 500L and 600L barrels. As barrels do, they all go their own way so I made a selection of my favorite barrels for the 22 Croft SB which is more linear and the rest to Joie de Chien which is more mid focused. It is a great wine and is an amazing value.”

J.C. Somers ‘La Revanche’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $19, that’s $18.05 at 5% off and $17.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “The 2022 La Revanche Chardonnay is sourced from the Anahata Vineyard in the Eola Hills AVA. Fermented and aged in 600 liter barrels it is made in the style of the great wines of Chablis. No malo. Total Cases 120.”

J.C. Somers ‘Joie de Chien’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $26.50, that’s $25.18 at 5% off and $23.85 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Joie de Chien is the second label for J.C. Somers. Classic Dundee Hills Pinot Noir, drinking great now but will age for many years.”
This is the only listing in the USA today!
J.C. Somers ‘Nouvelle Lune’ Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “The Nouvelle Lune (New Moon) is usually blend of our favorite Dundee Hills AVA Pinot Noir sites. However in 2022 the Nouvelle Lune is 100% Abbey Ridge Vineyard. This wine is an exceptional representation of the Dundee Hills terroir.”

J.C. Somers Abbey Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $61.90, that’s $58.81 at 5% off and $55.71 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “I have worked with Abbey Ridge since 1993 (while at Adelshiem) and in 1994 with Cameron Winery. In 2001, I was lucky to be offered a block of Pinot Noir at Abbey Ridge and have been working with the fruit ever since. Abbey Ridge is the cornerstone to our Pinot Noir program and I believe it to be the best Pinot Noir site in the Willamette Valley. Owned by my friends Bill and Julia Wayne, this vineyard is the platonic form of what the Dundee Hills AVA is all about – elegance. We have 2.5 acres of the Coury Clone Pinot Noir.”

J.C. Somers Bella Vida Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $55, that’s $52.25 at 5% off and $49.50 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Decanter 92 points “The aromas show a bright pomegranate and cranberry fruit with pleasant floral notes and a hint of exotic Asian spice. The texture is typical Dundee Hills: supple, elegant and fresh, yet there is rewarding density and length. The site is mainly planted with Wädenswil and Pommard clones, and Somers has been working with this fruit since 2002. He sees this as his ‘most Willamette’ expression, with a forward fruit showing well at an early stage. (Drink between 2022-2045).”
Winery Note “Bella Vida Vineyard is another exceptional vineyard site in the Dundee Hills. Owned and meticulously farmed by Steve Whiteside, it is one of my favorite sites to work with. I started making wines from this vineyard in 2001 when the vines were still very young, and, over the years, it has steadily matured to become a powerful expression of the Dundee Hill AVA. We currently have 0.5 acres each of the Pommard, Wadenswil and Dijon 777 clones.”
J.C. Somers Bella Vida Vineyard Wadenswil Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “Bella Vida Vineyard is another exceptional vineyard site in the Dundee Hills. Owned and meticulously farmed by Steve Whiteside, it is one of my favorite sites to work with. J.C. Somers La Colina Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “La Colina Vineyard is a vineyard I have always referred to as “secret sauce”. In my former winemaking life, I was creating much larger Dundee Hills Pinot Noir blends for the national market. Year after year, the barrels I selected to do a single vineyard “La Colina Pinot Noir” were sacrificed into the blend, it always elevated the wine in such a positive way that it had to be done. This is a classic Dundee Hills site and is farmed by my friend George Hillberry. When I started this new project I was fortunate that George had a small block left and it beautifully complements my other Dundee Hills Pinot Noir wines. We have 1 acre of the Pommard clone and 1 acre of Wadenswil.”

J.C. Somers Garnier Vineyard Tempranillo Rose, Columbia Gorge 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $18, that’s $17.10 at 5% off and $16.20 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Jay Somers Note “The fruit was meant for Rosé but by time I got up there to check the vineyard it would have been 14.5% as Rosé so I pivoted and destemmed it. It is a fun wine and Ronda drinks it for something different. I had one new Bordeaux barrel in the mix which gave it some nice structure.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:
Max Ferd. Richter
The first thing that jumps out about Max Ferd. Richter wines is the incredible real estate the winery holds. This is an ancient estate, dating back over 300 years and now under the helm of 10th-generation winemaker Constantin Richter. Vineyard management is focused on maximizing quality. Harvest is completely by hand with multiple, meticulous passes through the vineyard to ensure only the finest grapes are harvested. Botrytized grapes are hand-selected at the single berry level.
The Middle Mosel is where all the historic glory of German Riesling rests. Based on their holdings and the quality of their wines, Richter deserves to be a name on par with JJ Prum, Fritz Haag, Willi Schaefer, etc. but poor distribution has prevented them from reaching the level of fame that they deserve (which, frankly, is great for pricing).
In 2018, the Richters leaned in to what Mother Nature provided in the moderately warm and dry vintage. The results are utterly delicious now, but with sugar and acid levels that will do well in the cellar. To quote Mosel Fine Wines’ take on these 2018s, the wines are simply amped up versions of their classic style. These wines show “a touch more ripeness and roundness than usual, but also with the playful side that has made the success of their Estate over the years… All in all, Max Ferd. Richter took the vintage and produced utterly enjoyable and playful wines. One could nearly say: As usual.”
These are gloriously complex wines, built for the cellar and affordable enough to buy in quantity.

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Grosses Gewachs 2018 750ml Was $45, Now $36, 8 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 94 points “I love the discreet mirabelle, spice and angelica notes of this finely chiseled dry Mosel riesling that has plenty of depth and structure, but doesn’t yet announce it loudly. Needs some time to open up, but the classic elegance is already very clear. Drinkable now, but better from 2022.”

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** 2018 375ml Was $59, Now $49, 33 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97+ points “The first three-starred Auslese since 2005 (prior to that, it was 1993, 1983 and 1975), the 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** was picked at about 145° Oechsle. This is incredibly clear, pure, fine and fresh on the lush, concentrated, herbal and grapefruit-scented nose. On the palate, this is a generously lush, refined and salty-piquant Auslese with a tight mineral structure and lingering salinity. This is highly refined and extremely stimulating. It already drinks all too well today, but Constantin recommends cellaring it for at least 10 years. Tasted in March 2019.”
