Both Renée Saint-Amour and Grant Coulter were raised to appreciate Oregon wines, despite hailing from out of state. Their mutual interest and love of adventure brought them to the Valley. Grant worked with Hamacher before joining Beaux Freres and eventually becoming their winemaker under Mike Etzel’s tutelage. Today, Grant is the winemaker at Flâneur, an incredible estate that releases beautiful and utterly delicious wines similarly focused on sustainability.
Together, this wife-and-husband team launched Hundred Suns as a boutique winery and eventually scrapped together enough cash to purchase Breaker Vineyard, a fifty-year-old site in the Eola-Amity Hills and now home to them, their kids, and their winery. They do everything by hand, from crafting their wines, distributing in town, and even their stunning label-design.
Hundred Suns was named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, their Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley. These are unique, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley including one of our favorites, Bednarik. This vineyard flies under the radar a bit, but Ken Wright fans from the 90’s know the site well. Renée and Grant’s version offers beautiful, crunchy structure allied to a beguiling mixture of black cherry fruit and savory overtones. It’s a cool-climate vineyard, even for Oregon, and that shows in the brightness on the finish, alongside its great power.
Anyone who’s loved the Beaux Freres or Flâneur wines in the past needs to pay attention to what this husband-and-wife team are doing at Hundred Suns. This project represents one of the most exciting new labels in the Willamette Valley. Lovers of Oregon wines, and Beaux Freres in particular, should stock up now on Hundred Suns wines before they become hard to find.
“The 2022 vintage really turned out to be something special, ‘a classic Oregon Vintage’ bright, refreshing but full personality.” –Grant Coulter

Hundred Suns Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 36 bottles arriving today
Winery note “The Eola-Amity Hills, where this collection of dry farmed vineyards grows, is comprised of soils formed by ancient volcanic rock. A cool spring slowed maturity and pushed us deep into October for a true fall harvest. Blue fruit and spiced tea give way to a juicy core and a structure born from the winds of the Van Duzer Corridor. 60% Big Cheese Vineyard (Picked Oct. 13). 32% Wahle Vineyard (Picked Oct. 13). 8% En Gedi Vineyard (Picked Oct. 13).”

Decanter 94 points “Made with 35% whole cluster, this wine exudes that Eola-Amity spiciness—aromatics of violets accented by white pepper and exotic spice. The palate is rich and lushly fruited, all the while complemented with savoury dried herbs, pomegranate, a core of concentrated blue fruits and a richness and power to the finish.”

Hundred Suns Carson Phillips Pinot Noir 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56.50, that’s $53.68 at 5% off and $50.85 at 10% off, 24 bottles arriving today
Winery note “Uniquely situated in the Dundee Hills this dry farmed site boasts deep, well-
drained Jory soils consisting of weathered basalt. A cool, wet spring started the season and restricted yields. Above average summer temperatures and a warm fall allowed the small clusters to hang until October 15th. The fruit was fermented in two small lots: one fully destemmed and the other with partial whole cluster. Once the wild yeast completed fermentation, the wine was gently decanted off the skins after 20 days. The wine was aged in oak for 11 months and bottled in late August 2023. Brilliant cherry and raspberry aromas compliment the bright acid and delicate tannins.”
Grant’s note “The Carson Phillips Vineyard is planted in the north western part of the Dundee Hills. It’s a southeast exposure but is blocked a little to the east so somewhat cooler. Classic Jory soils and planted in 2000 so it’s got some years on it. Deep red fruits, raspberries and strawberries. Very delicious.”

Decanter 94 points “Powerful fruit aromatics from this Dundee Hills site, followed on by a tremendous stony minerality. The palate shows tension and structure. There is ample red brambly fruit, a bit of clove and nutmeg, and a touch of smoky minerality to finish.”

Hundred Suns Lone Feather Pinot Noir 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $56.50, that’s $53.68 at 5% off and $50.85 at 10% off, 24 bottles arriving today
Grant’s note “The Lone Feather Vineyard is an old own rooted site in the McMinnville AVA. Originally planted for Myron Redfern at Amity, it slipped into obscurity for many years. I met the new owners Warren and Jennifer Feather a few years back and fell in love with the site. Pommard and Wadenswil, planted on rocky volcanic soils. Dry farmed, it’s an intense wine of deep blue fruits, licorice and spice. Probably my favorite wine of the 2022 vintage right now.”
Winery note “The Lone Feather vineyard is planted on rocky basalt soils on the edge the McMinnville AVA. Cool, coastal breezes and rocky volcanic soil helped to focus the deep flavors of these own rooted vines established in the late 1980’s. Deep garnet hues precede flavors that burst with blue fruit, crushed rock, and mint. Under the stewardship of Warren and Jennifer Feater, this site is meticulously farmed with the goal of sustaining this legacy vineyard for years to come. Fermented with indigenous yeast and partial whole bunch, our two-barrel blend was bottled in late August 2023, unfined and unfiltered.”

Hundred Suns Sequitur Vineyard Pinot Noir, Ribbon Ridge 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $61.50, that’s $58.43 at 5% off and $55.35 at 10% off, 24 bottles arriving today
Winery note “The Sequitur vineyard was planted in 2012-2013 by Mike Etzel and Carey Critchlow in the Ribbon Ridge AVA. Eons of tectonic movement has lifted the ancient seabeds to where they lie today at 450 feet above sea level. A diverse mixture of Pinot Noir planted on these marine sedimentary soils weathered a cold spring that led into a warm sumer and gorgeous fall. Picked on October 8th, the pristine fruit was fermented 33% whole cluster over 22 days. Brimming with dark cherry, plum licorice, and sweet smells of pipe tobacco, this wine will best be consumed 2024-2035.”
No reviews for the 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.
Decanter 96 points “Pungent floral aromatics introduce this wine from Sequitur, which sits above the Beaux Frères estate sites in Ribbon Ridge, surrounded by native forests. The palate shows great depth, elegance, and umami character collide; plum skins, blue berry fruits, and turned earth highlight an array of complexity. This wine is made with 35-40% whole cluster, and its structure communicates a great ageability.”

Hundred Suns Own-Rooted Pinot Noir 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles arriving today
Winery note “This special bottling is a barrel selection from three distinct vineyards, all planted with ungrafted or “own rooted” Pinot Noir. Due to the root louse, phylloxera, these plantings have become increasingly rare and this selection shows the beauty and elegance that can be achieved when Pinot Noir is planted without rootstock. 50% Bednarik Vineyard- Marine Sedimentary soils. 25% Noren Vineyard- Marine Sedimentary soils. 25% Koosah Vineyard- Volcanic soil.”
No reviews for the 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.
Decanter 95 points “Smoky and slightly reductive, this somewhat backward wine opens on the palate to show savoury dark fruit character with a mineral core. The texture is dense, with a saline firmness and plenty of length. Fermentation with 50% whole clusters gives the wine a slightly carbonic edge. Winemaker Andrew Riechers helped plant the Sequitur vineyard with Mike Etzel between 2012 and 2013; he is delighted to continue working with its beautiful fruit.”

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.
Decanter 94 points “Comprised of Chardonnay from mostly Koosah and Lone Feather vineyard and left on the lees with no stirring. Only 10% new oak really lets this fruit from all basalt soils shine through. The palate is richly textured, with lemon cream, stony petrichor and notes of cardamom and pear, showing real depth and elegance.”
Winery note “The Old Eight Cut refers to a diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature. 2022 was a year of contrasts. A cool, wet spring punctuated with frost set back the harvest. Warm summer days and a beautiful fall enabled our collection of vineyards to reach full maturity. Hand-harvested on the 13th and 14th of October, the whole bunches were pressed gently and sent to tank to begin their wild yeast fermentation. Once initiated, the wines were moved to French oak barrels to finish fermentation and were then bottled without filtration one year later.”

Hundred Suns Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery note “This year’s Gamay was grown at Tualatin Estate in soils mixed with deep sandstone, broken shale, clay, and basalt. Low-vigor vines set a modest crop, and the fruit was picked on October 17th. The fruit was separated into three fermentations: one fully destemmed and two lots of whole bunch. Treated in a traditional fashion, we let native yeast slowly finish fermentation. The wines were pressed and aged in a combination of 20% terracotta and 80% neutral barrels. This wine brims with spice, red cranberries, layers of perfumed licorice, and floral notes.”

Decanter 93 points “Fruit from Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Chehalem Mountains and the Tualatin Hills AVA. Lots of floral and fruit aromatics. The palate loads up on sweet cherry fruit, with a melange of crushed violets, stone, and some strawberry fruit leather. There’s great spice and savoury, but it’s all about the fresh fruit.”

A cool, wet spring punctuated with frost set back the harvest. Warm summer days and a beautiful fall enabled our dry farmed vineyards to reach maturity. Hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeast, this 20% whole cluster Pinot Noir is brimming with red fruits, succulent acidity, and a back bone of fine grain tannins that make this wine approachable but also age-worthy for the next ten years.”

Hundred Suns Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $379.05 at 5% off and $359.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points “Made with 35% whole cluster, this wine exudes that Eola-Amity spiciness—aromatics of violets accented by white pepper and exotic spice. The palate is rich and lushly fruited, all the while complemented with savoury dried herbs, pomegranate, a core of concentrated blue fruits and a richness and power to the finish.”
International Wine Report 93 points “The 2021 Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir is fermented with 35% whole cluster and aged for 11 months in French oak barrels. Showcasing a medium ruby-purple core with a silvery rim in the glass, it contributes aromas and flavors of blueberry compote, early gray tea, red grapefruit zest, sweet cinnamon stick, and wet earth. Balanced tannins and acidity aid in the smooth and lively finish that goes on for minutes.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Precise and dynamic, with handsome boysenberry, crushed stone and dusky spice flavors that build richness and tension toward medium-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 455 cases made. –TF”
Winery note “This Pinot Noir consists of 20% Koosah Vineyard and 80% Big Cheese Vineyard, planted on rocky, volcanic soils and cooled by Pacific Ocean breezes.”
Hundred Suns Bednarik Vineyard Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Decanter 94 points “From own-rooted Pommard and Wadenswil planted in the early 1980s. This is the coolest site that Grant and Renee work with. There are opulent florals and fresh yet rich red berry aromatics. The own-rooted vines seem to hone in on fruit and floral characters, and the palate shows rich strawberry and pomegranate flavours, tayberries and strawberry balsamic. This wine shows a mature sense of concentration.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “Polished and detailed, with an array of elegant cherry, pomegranate, sassafras and orange-tinged tea flavors, which gather richness and tension toward refined tannins. Drink now through 2031. 296 cases made. –TF”
Winery note “Planted in marine sedimentary soil deep in the cool coastal foothills, this 6-acre, own-rooted vineyard was planted in 1988 by William Bednarik to Pommard and Wädenswil clones of Pinot Noir. A dry winter and warm spring led into a warm growing season ending with a dry fall. Handpicked on September 20th & 26th, the grapes were broken up into five lots with varying percentages of whole cluster. Grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in oak for 11 months. Then they were moved gently to bottle, unfined and unfiltered. Layered with ripe cranberries, sweet red fruits, and floral aromas that accompany the refined and silky palate.”
