Gulfi first came to prominence as a champion of Nero d’Avola—the rich dark grape that they proved could be a transparent expression of terroir. The single vineyard bottlings that Gulfi made changed perceptions of the grape and has helped lead to the current renaissance of Sicilian viticulture. These are wines that are intense, powerful, yet graceful.

Vito Catania founded the estate in 1996, a native of Sicily and descendant of the family that has produced wine and olive oil in the region for generations. His focus was on traditional growing methods that have been in place since Roman times: non-irrigation, dense planting, and head-pruned bush-vines. Today, Gulfi is run by his son, Matteo Catania. He follows in his father’s footsteps, having worked for the domaine for over 20 years when he took over at his father’s passing in 2017. He is focusing on biodynamic and organic vineyard practices. The results are low-yields with superb concentration and finesse, focused on the Nero d’Avola grape.

Gulfi’s Nero d’Avola is typically extracted and rich, with subtle nuances reflecting the vineyard locations spread around the southeastern corner of the island. Variations in altitude and proximity to the sea influence the delicate aromatics. Salinity and sea breeze influences are present and add nuance to the ripe, roasty, and smoky characteristics.

The Nerosanlore is a high-altitude site with a strong marine influence. The terroir tempers Nero d’Avola’s natural richness with higher acidity, redder fruits and grippier tannins. The 2016 vintage was magical throughout the Italian peninsula, and Gulfi’s 2016s are arguably their finest yet—a real upgrade in terms of finesse and elegance over previous years. But don’t worry, these are still plenty powerful.

The Cerasuolo di Vittoria wines are very traditional blends of Nero d’Avola and the fruity Frappato grape. Wines labeled as Classico hail exclusively from the original 1973 zone and are aged for a minimum of 18 months.

Winery Note
“Nero d’Avola 100%, grown as a sapling carried on an espalier. Nero d’Avola takes its name from Avola, a town near Pachino in the province of Syracuse, where several centuries ago it was selected by the winemakers of the area. Grown without synthetic inputs or irrigation, this is the entry-level offering from Gulfi. Meant to be a light and juicy iteration of Nero D’Avola.”

“Deep ruby. Intense violet/black cherry on the very perfumed nose. Then big dense and juicy, with ripe black cherry and candied violet flavors complicated by flint and aromatic spices. Finishes long with building tannins and a strong floral note derived from the Frappato. An outstanding Cerasuolo di Vittoria.”

Gulfi Nerosanloré Sicilia IGT 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Ian d’Agata-Vinous 97 points
“Luminous red. Precise, brooding aromas of ripe red cherry, flint, orange rind, cinnamon, lavender and violet, complicated by iodine and earth. Silky and sappy with refined but very concentrated extract, this smothers the taste buds but stays vibrant and not at all heavy, offering lovely definition and lift to the red cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral flavors. Finishes extremely deep and long, with ultra-suave tannins, mesmerizing inner-mouth perfume and extreme refinement; very Barolo-like. A lovely multilayered wine showcasing the elegant side of Nero d’Avola that very few producers ever manage to showcase.”
