David Schildknecht-Vinous 92 points “Based largely on vintage 2016 and on grapes from Ruppertsberg (especially Linsenbusch), this offers a mouthwatering and remarkably Chablis-like evocation of salted, herbed chicken stock and oyster liquor. Walnut and peach kernel piquancy stimulate further on a brightly lemony, buoyant palate. The mousse is admirably fine, the long finish both cheek-pinching and saliva-inducing, irrepressibly juicy and loaded with animal as well as mineral savor. Coming as it does in large part from a relatively sandy and flat Einzellage with only a very modest reputation, I was amazed at both this wine’s strength of personality and its quality. Weingut Dr. Deinhard was strongly associated with sparkling wine from its mid-19th-century inception, and ever since the estate’s 2009 sale, the revival of the name von Winning, and Stephan Attmann’s installation as winemaker, traditional-method sparkling wine from cask-fermented musts has been a very serious part of the estate program. Results keep reaching new levels of finesse.”

Unlike its counterpart form the Dautenpflänzer, this was raised in cask, and was allowed to ferment to a lower level of residual sugar. It comes off as a riper, richer sibling of the corresponding Im Pitterberg Riesling Kabinett, its gloss merging with creaminess, yet with fresh white peach and lime juiciness complementing ripe quince and serving for animation and refreshment. The finish is unexpectedly electrifying in its vibrancy and mouthwateringly saline, and gains stimulating counterpoint from peach kernel piquancy, peach fuzz prickle and a crystalline sense of stone-showering mineral impingement. (If there is a second, “regular” Im Pitterberg Spätlese from this vintage, I am not aware of it.)”

This hay-yellow-colored wine offers a rather subtle and very complex nose made of earthy spices, pear, apricot blossom, a hint of date, cream, and smoke. It proves very subtle and elegant on the palate, where a touch of zest brings the right kick to the complex creamy and fruity flavors. The finish is subtly racy, delicately creamy, and, above all, hugely satisfying. This is a great under-toned but complex expression of Spätlese in the making. 2033-2048.”

On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and gently glazed, with very clean botrytis, a lovely core, bright acids and a long, complex and still quite youthful finish. This is a touch more botrytized and powerful in personality than the AP #10 version, and it will need a bit more time to really start to express itself, but it should be outstanding in due course. 2028-2065. 93+.”

On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and zesty, with a lovely core, great backend mineral drive and outstanding complexity and grip on the vibrant, snappy and electric finish. This is just beautiful Auslese! 2026-2085+. 95.”

John Gilman 95 points “The 2018 Juffer TBA is just a bit higher in residual sugar than the Beerenauslese this year, as Oliver estimates that it is around one hundred and eighty grams per liter. This too is a gorgeous wine in the making, offering up refined bouquet of mirabelle, honey, white cherries, candied violets, citrus zest and a nice touch of saltiness from the slate. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, creamy and very long and complex, with excellent focus and grip, sound acids and a very long, pure and zesty finish. Utterly captivating and borderline criminal to spit. 2019-2100.”

The Incomparable Domaine Leflaive
Domaine Leflaive is the white Burgundy domaine against which all others are judged. Moreso than names like Coche or PYCM (who are great, but sui generis), the whites of Leflaive are immaculate in their quality but very much what we all think of when we hear the words “white Burgundy.” The wines are an experience and a master class in terroir. The vineyard team, who has had direct lineage for three generations, and the late Anne-Claude Leflaive took careful farming to a new level as one of the earliest adopters of biodynamics in the Cote d’Or.The soil of Puligny-Montrachet seems to run in the veins of the Leflaives. The estate goes back to the end of the 19th century, when Joseph Leflaive laid the groundwork of rehabilitating the vineyards and eventually selling wine under his own label instead of selling to negociants.
These are, quite simply, the best wines you’ll find in Puligny-Montrachet, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a purer expression of Chardonnay anywhere on the planet.

The bigger and richer flavors also possess a gorgeous mouthfeel that is almost delicate yet racy with excellent delineation on the youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finish that just goes on and on. This is potentially a magnificent Bātard and it’s going to be interesting to compare this with the Bienvenues-Bātard-Montrachet in a decade’s or so time. In sum, I would offer the same advice – if you can find it, buy it.”

This is quite simply majestic in its class and grace and is a wine that should age effortlessly for years.”

Burghound 95-98 points “A trace of reduction isn’t sufficient to materially reduce the appeal of the honeysuckle, citrus confit and softly spiced aromas that are also trimmed in just enough wood to merit pointing out. The medium-bodied flavors aren’t necessarily finer than those of the Pucelles though they do possess more power and weight while retaining a beguilingly silky texture as well as excellent complexity on the strikingly long, balanced and Zen-like finale. This is a very serious and moderately austere BBM that is very clearly built to repay long-term keeping. In a word, superb.”

Interestingly, the middleweight flavors aren’t quite as dense as those of the Bienvenues-Bātard-Montrachet yet the intensity is even higher, indeed it’s almost painful, while flashing impressive power on the gorgeously complex, sneaky long and equally well-balanced finale. This is also stunning but patience required.”
