A.J. Adam is the finest grower in the Mosel’s side valley of Dhron. This Auslese hails from one of his top vineyards, Hofberg, and promises plenty of vibrancy from these old vines.
Weingut A.J. Adam Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Auslese *, Mosel 2016 375ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 9 half-bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 92 points “The 2016er Auslese * was made from the second pressing of the Eiswein grapes harvested on November 30. This already golden-colored wine delivers a rather ripe and exotic nose of grapefruit, candied passion fruit and backed pineapple. It is nicely balanced on the palate and does not exhibit the usual “Eiswein bite” of such wines but proves more luscious in style. The acidity comes eventually through in the sweet and complex finish. 2023-2036.”

Markus Berres is the 21st generation to manage his family’s Ürzig estate. This stunning 2015 wine is sourced from all hand-selected, botrytised grapes from 30- to 80-year-old vines, most of which are ungrafted. As a tiny estate, their cult wines are mostly sold locally.
C.H. Berres Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel, Mosel 2015 375ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 11 half-bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s Note (via importer) “This noble-sweet Auslese Goldkapsel from the Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard presents a tight and concentrated nose of ripe, sweet peach, honey and dried apricots blended with mango fruit and a hint of orange peel. Swirling the glass it reveals the oily, concentrated texture. The taste is nicely structured and well balanced. Fruity acidity breaks through the residual sugar to clear the palate. This is a full-bodied wine with a long lasting, mellow, melting finish. 100% botrytised grapes.”

This is one of the most dramatically steep vineyards in the entire Mosel, attended to by none other than the pioneers Clemens and Rita Busch. Stephan Reinhardt recommends the wines be enjoyed slowly and not too cold, as they are expressive, thoughtful wines.
Weingut Clemens Busch Pundericher Marienberg Rothenpfad Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2014 375ml Was $59, Displayed Price: $49, 5 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2014 Riesling Auslese Rothenpfad displays a lovely, clear and slate-like bouquet, with herbal and tropical fruit flavors. Sweet and piquant on the palate, this is a rich and very elegant, well balanced Riesling with a great delicacy, and fruit-intense and piquant finish. Very stimulating. The residual sugar of 135 grams per liter is almost blown away by the acidity and minerality.”

Easily the most famous name in the region of Nahe, Donnhoff is adored by longtime collectors and those new to German Riesling. The Oberhäuser Brücke vineyard produces wines with a unique and vibrant mineral core, like a blast of cold air on a sunny winter’s morning. We love these wines. The problem is, vintage to vintage, they are always winners that it becomes hard to choose a favorite.
Weingut Donnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife’s edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 11 half-bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “Such an exotic nose with a slew of passion fruit, mangosteen and King Alfonso mango. Compact and concentrated, but the more important things are the coolness and gracefulness of this moderately sweet Auslese that turns in a dark, “earthy” direction at the powerful finish. Very limited production. From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2022 375ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 11 half-bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points “Wonderful nose of exotic fruits and flowers. More than enough concentration, but what makes this stand out is the interplay of ripeness – floral honey as much as very ripe citrus – with a vibrant acidity that lights up the sky. Dazzling, diamond-bright finish! From organically grown grapes with Fair’n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
OK, so Donnhoff is the most famous Nahe producer in the USA, but Emrich-Schonleber can lay claim to that title at home. These awe-inspiring wines from incredibly steep slopes are worth every penny, especially this beauty from a slate- and granite-rich vineyard of Halenberg.
Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Auslese, Nahe 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $38, that’s $36.10 at 5% off and $34.20 at 10% off, 20 half-bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “Very intense, candied yellow-grapefruit nose. Super-concentrated, but the most important thing about this Auslese is the incredibly tight focus on the palate and the purity of the dried apricot and mango. Super-succulent and vibrant finish that doesn’t want to stop. Drink or hold.”

Wine Spectator 94 points “This feels like it’s holding back a little on the floral, apricot, lime and slate flavors. Light-bodied and graceful, this is well-structured and focused on the lingering finish. Reveals just a touch of earthiness that should disappear with aeration (as this did) or age. Best from 2024 through 2045. —B.S.”

Prum is the reference-point producer of the Mosel. No other winery has such a consistently excellent track record and cellar-potential. Half bottles might just be the best intro to the estate because they age faster than full sized bottles. So, if you’re new here, or simply lack the patience, here’s your ticket to perfection.
Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2020 375ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 36+ half-bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points “Although this is still very young, it shows fabulous aromatic complexity, the summer-flower, peach, apricot and passion-fruit aromas of breathtaking beauty. Very concentrated and super-filigree, the considerable ripeness beautifully balanced by mineral acidity that provides enormous vitality at the enormously detailed finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2023.”
Decanter 96 points “The wines of J.J. Prüm are famously tight and reductive in youth, but this profoundly ripe, perfumed auslese suggests an opulence and ease reflective of the massively ripe 2020 vintage. All the nuances of the house style are still here: the nervous edges of acidity, the subtle flairs of smoke and struck slate, but there’s a throbbing core of luscious yellow peach and even pineapple flavours here, too, laced with a sheen of sweetness and a fine, revitalising finish. Approachable young but structured for the long haul. (Drink between 2023-2070).”

Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, Mosel 2021 375ml Displayed Price: $46, that’s $43.70 at 5% off and $41.40 at 10% off, 32 half-bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 96 points “A surprisingly open nose defines the 2021 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, revealing an herbal savor that is reminiscent of moss, chervil, and carrot top, but just a hint. The palate is a gorgeously concentrated stream of ripe citrus, combining the aromatic intensity and ripeness of Amalfi lemon, the brightness of lime and the sweetness of sugared orange flesh. So direct, so precise, sweet but utterly balanced. Clear as a bell. (Sweet) (Drink between 2030-2050).”
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points “The 2021er Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a superbly complex and pure fresh nose of candied grapefruit, vineyard peach, verbena, almond cream, smoke, and a hint of cassis. The wine proves superbly honeyed and creamy on the palate, where riper elements of pineapple, honeyed peach, and apricot are wrapped in candied citrusy fruits. The wine is intense and still quite broad but the finish is already pure and hugely long. This is a splendid refined Auslese, which just needs time to develop all its facets.”

Keller is the benchmark for cool in all of Germany. The top cult producer that crafts the top wine of the Rheinhessen (G-Max). Oddly enough, while folks will fight over their GG bottlings, the rest tend to linger on the shelves. It’s not for lack of quality, to which us staff can personally attest. It’s more a lack of being the golden child or being made from Riesling, which is a shame. Their entire lineup is exquisite, complex, and utterly delicious.
Weingut Keller Rieslaner Auslese, Rheinhessen 2022 375ml Displayed Price: $45, that’s $42.75 at 5% off and $40.50 at 10% off, 11 half-bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: As Keller moves to produce more off-dry and sweet wines, this is the “house” sweet wine. Rieslaner is a cross of Silvaner and Riesling. It’s a rare, late-ripening variety with high acidity, and Keller is one of the most renowned producers working with it.

This warm and dry vintage is a great look into the magic of this ancient and noble estate. Rarely distributed in the USA, Max Ferd. Richter’s wines are on par with JJ Prum and Willi Schaefer. We’re proud to carry this perfectly poised Auslese, which we know you will adore.
Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ***, Mosel 2018 375ml Was $59, Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 32 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97+ points “The first three-starred Auslese since 2005 (prior to that, it was 1993, 1983 and 1975), the 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** was picked at about 145° Oechsle. This is incredibly clear, pure, fine and fresh on the lush, concentrated, herbal and grapefruit-scented nose. On the palate, this is a generously lush, refined and salty-piquant Auslese with a tight mineral structure and lingering salinity. This is highly refined and extremely stimulating. It already drinks all too well today, but Constantin recommends cellaring it for at least 10 years.”

Markus Molitor is unrivaled in his breadth and depth of range. The options are nearly endless: with three Pradikat levels – Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese (not to mention the starred Auslese: *, **, and ***) – that are each fermented to dry (white capsule), off-dry (green capsule), and “fruity” (gold capsule); that’s per vineyard block. And did we mention how many vineyards he has holdings in? (Twenty-four.) And that nearly every bottling receives massive scores from multiple reviewers! How the hell is one to choose? We’ve highlighted some of our favorites in half-bottles below, including the elusive Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese below.
Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 375ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 18 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points “Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a deep, pure, precise, smoky, highly concentrated yet refined and coolish nose of stewed stone fruits, candied lemons and grapefruits that intermingle with crushed stone and some leathery aromas. Lush and round on the generous but precise and highly finessed palate, this is an almost weightless Auslese with a honey-sweet yet piquant and salty finish. This is another laser-sharp but also sensual highlight of the vintage, not only at Markus Molitor.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points “Filled in 375-milliliter bottles, the 2019 Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) opens with a fascinating, refined and aromatic bouquet of broken slate and botrytized raisins. Lush and fresh, with very fine grip, this is an utterly finessed and aromatic Auslese that is as rich and intense as it is weightless, frisky and salivating. Surely a picture-book Auslese from the Badstube. Tasted in May 2021.”
Markus Molitor Kinheimer Hubertuslay Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2013 375ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 8 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2013 Kinheimer Hubertuslay Auslese *** needs a little but of time to open up and show its finest, intense raisin aromas indicating grapefruit/lemon and pineapples on a piquant background. Rich, oily textured and extremely elegant on the palate, the wine offers a lavish tropical juiciness quoting pineapples, but is stunningly pure and piquant. The finish is beautifully balanced and highly elegant. This is perfectly made.”

The Pfalz is best known for two things: its profound dry whites and Muller-Catoir. This estate crafts superb bottlings not just from the glorious Riesling grape, but also other aromatic varieties such as Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder), Muscat (Muskateller), and Scheurebe (Riesling’s “wild” cousin). Our favorite site of theirs is the Breumel section of the Burgergarten vineyard. It’s the heart of the vineyard and the highest, offering cool and stony aromatics. A monopole, it is walled in to protect it from the cold air. This portion of the vineyard is classified as a Grosse Lage, which a VDP designation for the greatest vineyards in Germany.
Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten ‘Im Breumel’ Riesling Auslese, Pfalz 2015 375ml Was $49, Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 36+ half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2015 Riesling Auslese Haardter Bürgergarten Im Breumel is very clear and concentrated on the nose, but also shows the brown seed aromas of ripe Riesling. Great class and precision here, with some minty flavors. The wine is very concentrated, lush and round on the palate; it reveals a super sweet raisin flavor, as well as great finesse and vitality. This is a gorgeous Auslese with salinity and grip.”

The philosopher king of the Mosel, Willi Schaefer’s wines are thoughtful, awe-inspiring, and “breathtakingly beautiful.” As mentioned above, 2018 was a warm year, so these wines drink well out of the gate. Enjoy now for a more hedonistic experience or cellar for decades to reveal the true profundity.
Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Auslese #14, Mosel 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 11 half-bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 96 points “The 2018 Domprobst Auslese AP #14 is also an outstanding wine in the making, with just a touch more fruit-driven personality than the AP #11 version. The bouquet is very expressive out of the blocks, offering up a gorgeous mix of pear, mirabelle, tangerine, slate, gentle notes of honeycomb and a topnote of citrus blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied and absolutely loaded with beautiful fruit on the attack and mid-palate, with a lovely undertow of slate, great focus and grip and a long, zesty and beautifully balanced finish. This is another breathtakingly beautiful Auslese from the estate in 2018! 2026-2085.”

Weingut Keller Monsheimer Silberberg Rieslaner Beerenauslese Goldkapsel 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 6 half-bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: Silberberg, which name translates to silver mountain, was named after the mining the once occurred in the area. Rieslaner is a cross of Silvaner and Riesling. It’s a rare, late-ripening variety with high acidity, and Keller is one of the most renowned producers working with it. Soils of limestone, loess, flint, and clay. Klaus Peter Keller, in discussion with David Schildknecht of Vinous, explains that the gold capsule designation “no longer means more botrytis or a much higher must weight. It means [the grapes are] from the best part of a vineyard or its oldest vines.” Making this the finest example of Beerenauslese Rieslaner available from the winery, and likely the world.

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 95 points “The white-golden colored 2019 Kinheimer Hubertuslay Beerenauslese offers a deep, intense and concentrated bouquet with ripe and flinty-scented raisin and lemon aromas. Lush and round on the refined and elegant palate, this is a sensual, mouth-filling yet delicate BA with vivacious yet fine acidity and a long and stimulating, salty and highly seductive finish. 6.5% alcohol.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Beerenauslese is clear, fresh and very delicate on the subtle yet complex nose that reveals white tea aromas along with lemon-scented notes of crushed stones. Round and filigreed on the palate, this is a light and delicate, finessed yet intense and salty BA whose sweetness is well captured by mineral grip and tension. This is a really excellent, frisky and digestible BA for aperitifs, entrées and desserts. 6% alcohol.”

Whether we know it or not, Johannes Selbach is the reason modern Americans drink German Riesling. He inspired Terry Theise’s journey and has personally long-supported our shop through his masterful recommendations. His wines are unpretentious but not lacking in depth. They lean towards the elegant side of the spectrum, ready and willing to be friendly with food. Without the weight of high alcohol and overripeness, these wines sing as part of a chorus of good food and friends.
Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenhuhr Riesling Beerenauslese, Mosel 2018 375ml Was $79, Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 10 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2018 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese displays an intense but very clear and radiant citrus color in the glass. The nose is concentrated and fresh, with lemon chutney and broken stone aromas. Pure and fresh on the palate, this is a dense, concentrated, rich yet very precise, fresh and elegant BA with a long, crunchy, terroir-driven finish that represents the delicate slate structure of the Sonnenuhr. Still young but not really sweet due to the crystalline acidity structure. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points “The 2018 Halenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is incredibly pure and aromatic on the nose where super ripe but clear peach aromas are displayed. Extremely rich and refined on the palate, this is a ripe, terribly sweet but refined, fresh and salty-piquant TBA with a stimulating finish. A fabulous wine.”

The less famous of the Haag estates, the Fritz Haag is run by longtime winemaker Marcus Haag. This is an incredible TBA that will outlast us all.
Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, Mosel 2018 375ml Displayed Price: $399, that’s $379.05 at 5% off and $359.10 at 10% off, 12 half-bottles in stock now
John Gilman-A View From the Cellar 95 points “The 2018 Juffer TBA is just a bit higher in residual sugar than the Beerenauslese this year, as Oliver estimates that it is around one hundred and eighty grams per liter. This too is a gorgeous wine in the making, offering up refined bouquet of mirabelle, honey, white cherries, candied violets, citrus zest and a nice touch of saltiness from the slate. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, creamy and very long and complex, with excellent focus and grip, sound acids and a very long, pure and zesty finish. Utterly captivating and borderline criminal to spit. 2019-2100.”

Karlsmühle is nestled in the tiny Mosel subregion of the Ruwer. At a sharp bend in the tributary lies a massive slope bedecked in fine vineyard land. These are Lorenzhöf’s vineyards, which includes a monopole the estate. This slope is the steepest terroir in the Ruwer. The soils are composed of clayey slate layered with quartzite. Karlsmuhle’s vines are very old; their roots stretch deep into the rocky soil in search of scant water.
Weingut Karlsmühle Lorenzhöfer Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2007 375ml Was $119, Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 21 half-bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Wine Advocate 93+ points “Through diligent selection, Peter Geiben was able to harvest a 2007 Lorenzhofer Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, only the second T.B.A. of his career and third in the estate’s history (after 1976 and 1994). Dried peach, apricot, and date mingle with quince preserves, licorice and further suggestions of herbal concentrate both on the nose and palate. While impressively viscous, this preserves a welcome lightness of touch and vivacity illustrative of the best aspects of the vintage, and its residual sugar is remarkably restrained in expression. It manifests high-toned, borderline volatile esters but they do not get out of hand. Given that this was showing the effects of recent sulfuring and bottling on the one occasion when I was able to taste it, the wine’s virtues – including its sheer length – auger well for short-term improvement as well as candidacy for 40 or more years of cellaring.”

Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Trockenbeerenauslese is deep, intense and flinty on the nose that exhibits clear, ripe and concentrated fruit with very fine botrytis notes intertwined with aromas of crushed slate and candied lemon rind. Round and elegant on the seamless palate, this is a rich yet finessed and elegant, super tensioned and mineral TBA with electrifying acidity and a highly stimulating finish. There are not many TBAs around that are as digestible as this one, which is really extraordinary. 6.5% alcohol. Tasted in May 2021 (AP 29 20).”

David Schildknecht-Vinous 97 points “Corresponding to the most desiccated (yet still virtually botrytis-free) berries picked out from the material that otherwise became this year’s Beerenauslese, here we have one of those phenomenally concentrated Müller-Catoir essays in Rieslaner’s unique dessert wine potential. Take the pear drops, honey and vanilla cream of the corresponding B.A. in all their aromatic intensity and glossy, glowing richness, and add almost buttery textural creaminess and enhanced viscosity set against a blazingly bright and invigorating evocation of fresh pineapple, clementine and lemon. The tension is, to say the least, productive…yet almost unbearable as you work the wine around in your mouth. Any sense of caramelization – such as was prominent in the corresponding Auslese – has been left behind (though perhaps some decades from now it will emerge). Smoky black tea and citrus peels lend piquant counterpoint to a mouth-shakingly vibrant, preternaturally persistent finish. The qualitative curve has in my long experience never before been this steep from Rieslaner Auslese to TBA. ‘If you could have seen how dramatically the grapes differed for each of them,’ noted Franzen, ‘then this wouldn’t surprise you.’”

Korrell is a rising star Nahe producer. The winery dates back to 1832, but it’s only with young Martin taking over the cellar that the family has attained their current standing. The best vineyard that Korrell owns (and the backbone for all their Rieslings) is a monopole site called, appropriately, “Paradis.” It is a limestone-heavy site (a rarity, much like Keller’s Kirschspiel GG), with shallow soils and privileged exposition. It imparts unique and matchless aromatics to their exceptionally rare Eiswein.
Weingut Korrell Johanneshof Kreuznacher ‘Paradies’ Riesling Eiswein, Nahe 2016 375ml Was $79, Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 6 half-bottles in stock now
Grapelive 94 points “Korrell is one of the Nahe’s latest break out stars and every wine I’ve tried from Martin Korrell has been absolutely stunning, including this Eiswein. Crafted from old vines at their estate monopole Paradies Vineyard in Bad Kreuznach, from those grapes that hang out until the first freeze and were individual berry picked off the vine. Concentrated in sugars, but still bristling with natural acidity the gorgeous and opulent 2016 Korrell Eiswein Paradies goes on and on in mouth. Even with the residual sugar levels off the carts, this wine stays incredibly balanced and doesn’t drink as sweet as you’d imagine, making for a heavenly experience from its perfumed nose to its lingering tropical fruits. This is entrancing stuff with layers of lychee, candied pineapple, apricot jelly, honeycomb, lime blossom, white roses, chamomile, a hint of spearmint, mineral spice and cool wet stone…”

Loved in Germany, yet relatively unknown in the USA, these wines were recommended to us by Johannes Selback. Fred Prinz originally started Weingut Prinz as a “garagiste” or hobbiest winemaker operation in 1991. The critics quickly became enamored, and an invitation to join the legendary VDP consortium followed in 2005. Their estate vineyards are farmed organically, with a house style that aims for “minerality, elegance, finesse and ageing ability” that expresses terroir. With high-elevation holdings in the Rheingau, the winery produces a full range of Riesling’s including this ultra-rare Eiswein.

The 2016er Riesling Eiswein was made from fruit harvested at approx. 120° Oechsle in Bernkastel, Erden and Ürzig on both November 29 and November 30, and was fermented down to noble-sweet levels of residual sugar (143 g/l). It develops a beautifully zesty and fresh nose of candied grapefruit, orange jelly, and spices, joined by riper notes of quince, pear puree, and almond cream after some airing. The wine is superbly balanced and refined on the palate, and leaves a rather pure and smooth feel in the very long and light finish. The sweetness still dominates the acid core in the after-taste at this stage, but this should change after a few years of cellaring. 2024-2036. (Oct 2019)”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:
Kapcsandy
In 2000 Lou Kapcsándy discovered that the old Beringer State Lane vineyard, primary source for the Private Reserve Cabernet program, was for sale. He bought the twenty-acre vineyard, replanted it, and quickly began producing some of the most lauded wines to come out of the Napa Valley.
Kapcsándy’s grape growing philosophy involves intense cultivation, involving meticulous hedging and maintenance with continuity in the way the vines are planted, cared for and harvested. Vines are planted more densely than is typical for Napa Valley, instead mimicking the practices of 1st Growth Bordeaux. This creates smaller berries with higher skin-to-juice ratios and naturally stresses the vines resulting in a higher intensity of flavors, complexities, and aromas, such as those seen in this 100% Merlot.

Kapcsandy Family Winery State Lane Vineyard Roberta’s Reserve, Napa Valley 2015 750ml Was $369, Now $349, 1 bottle in stock now
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 98 points “Made from 100% Merlot, the 2015 Merlot Roberta’s Reserve has a deep garnet-purple color and gorgeous nose of black plums, warm blueberries and mocha with touches of anise, red roses and spice box. Medium to full-bodied and densely packed with layers of blue and black fruits and perfumed notions, it has a firm yet plush backbone to support and a very long, layered finish.”
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 96 points “Saturated ruby-red. Brooding, medicinal scents of dark cherry, menthol and licorice. Boasts outstanding breadth and density of material, with its expressive flavors of black cherry, dark berries, spices and bitter chocolate complicated by salty minerality and lifted by a subtle floral quality. This distinctly soil-driven wine is showing more personality today than the ’16 and should reach its plane of peak drinkability earlier. And yet my sample tightened up in the glass to show a rather powerful tannic spine. (14.4% alcohol; 100% Merlot; from fruit harvested three weeks earlier than in 2016; 88% new French, 3% new Hungarian and 9% second-fill French).”
