Envínate

The “New Spain” movement has transformed Spain’s image in the world of wine. Before, Rioja was essentially shorthand for Spanish wine and all other regions seemed to follow suit with big, ripe flavors, high alcohol, and so, so much new oak. In the last couple of decades, an alternative style has arisen, eschewing the fat for finesse.

Though less individually famous than the other leading figures in the “New Spain” winemaking movement, such as Ester Nin and Carles Ortiz of Familia Nin-Ortiz, Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia of Comando G, and Raúl Pérez Pereira of Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, the impact of Envínate has been profound.

The methods of this group of winemakers, friends Alfonso Torrente, José Ángel Martínez, Laura Ramos, and Roberto Santana, are low-intervention in the winery and ultra-traditional (read: minimalist) in the vineyards. They have brought life back into the Canary Islands as a wine region and invigorated the Levante and Ribiera Sacra, as well.

Envínate has drawn international praise and attention, with particular notice from Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate and multiple reviewers at James Suckling. Their wines are highly sought-after by collectors for their authenticity and ability to capture the terroir of these two profound regions. The wines of Envínate buzz with energy, capturing the terroir of their respective regions as if by magic. These are fascinating, age-worthy expressions of “New Spain” wines that are not to be missed, especially not at these prices.

Today, we’re placing wines from across all three of the regions they work with on sale, allowing you to explore these unique and delicious wines.

Envínate Linit Blanco, Levante 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $34.50, that’s $32.78 at 5% off and $31.05 at 10% off, 17 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93 points
“A new Mediterranean white from Envínate, the 2023 Linit was produced with Pardilla (also known as Marisancho) grapes from old vines in Almansa but, like the majority of their wines, is sold without appellation of origin. The whole clusters were pressed, and the juice fermented in concrete where the majority of the wine matured, but a small portion was put into 350-liter oak barrels for eight months. It’s pale, clean and floral, with white fruit and aromatic herbs, subtle and elegant, expressive and with a sense of purity. It has contained ripeness and alcohol (12.5%) and a balanced mouthfeel; it’s tasty and clean, with a faint bitter twist in the finish and a chalky sensation. This is a fresh and pure Mediterranean white. 4,300 bottles were filled in June 2024.”
James Suckling 92 points “This linit shows citrus notes with sesame and a stony element. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with a seductive textural element and flavors of white fruit. Drink now.”

Envínate Benje Blanco, Tenerife 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The white 2023 Benje Blanco, fermented without temperature control since 2021, matured in a 2,500-liter oak foudre and neutral 350-liter barrel, while 65% of the wine was kept in concrete. They also selected finer lees for the élevage, and the wine seems to have gained in finesse. The white grapes didn’t suffer the heat as much as the red ones, but it was not an easy harvest in Santiago del Teide. There’s less oxidation, and the percentage of wine with flor yeasts (25% to 30%) made for finer wines too. There’s a sensation of higher freshness, sharper; it didn’t go through malolactic. It’s also less reductive, and despite being a riper year, the alcohol was kept to 12% and the pH 3.06. It’s a great Benje Blanco. 19,000 bottles and 220 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

Envínate Táganan Blanco, Tenerife 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2022 Táganan Blanco has a mellow nose with notes of ripe yellow fruit, dried flowers, aromatic herbs and crushed rocks. 2022 was extremely dry and delivered healthy grapes that were harvested early, and the wine kept a moderate 12% alcohol and very high acidity (7.1 grams) that give it a lively palate with citrus freshness and a very tasty, salty finish. This didn’t go through malolactic fermentation and matured in neutral barrels with lees for nine months. 3,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.”

Envínate Albahra Tinto, Levante 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“After the Chingao bottling, there is a creamy and spicy whiff in the 2023 Albahra, which makes it feel more mainstream. It’s juicy and aromatic and has a medium-bodied palate, contained ripeness, 13% alcohol and good balance, with some fine-grained tannins. Last year, they introduced some white Pardilla grapes in the blend that seem to have given it freshness and a kick in the palate, which is Mediterranean, with good freshness and a balanced mouthfeel. 67,000 bottles and 600 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2024.”
James Suckling 94 points “This shows really lovely aromas of violets, stones and dried herbs. The palate is juicy, with succulent blue fruit flavors. Precise and savory. Amazing value. Drink now.”

Envínate Albahra Chingao, Levante 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“I also tasted the 2022 Albahra Chingao, pure Garnacha Tintorera vinified and bottled without any added sulfur after eight months in concrete. They did a softer vinification; it is always quite soft, but they tried to do even less, and the wine is a little lighter. I did notice the tannins a bit more. The wine is one year younger than the 2021 and needs some more time in bottle. It’s clean and precise and nothing points to a lack of added sulfur; there’s no oxidation or deviation whatsoever. It’s more and more evident that this can be done, as there are more and more examples of wines like this. So, there are no more excuses for wines with faults or deviations… I think this has to be the finest vintage for this cuvée so far… Bravo! 2,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.”

Envínate Albahra Chingao, Levante 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2023 Albahra Chingao, the custom cuvée for their US importer, was produced with Garnacha Tintorera and bottled without any added sulfur after eight months in concrete. It has a characterful and intriguing nose with notes of ripe berries and herbs and an earthy touch and hints of meat and iron. It has a touch of rusticity, something inherent to the grape. The wine feels very young, and the tannins are still present and suggest leaving it in bottle for a while. It’s a red for the table. 682 bottles and 21 magnums were filled in June 2024.”

Envínate Táganan Tinto, Tenerife 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 29 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The just-bottled 2022 Táganan Tinto is juicy and primary but with very good balance and no excess. It has less reductive character and is sapid and balanced. They did slightly shorter macerations and used a little more full clusters for this wine. It’s a very good vintage for this bottling. It was bottled in July 2023. 94+, drink 2025-2030”

Envínate Benje Tinto, Tenerife 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The bottled 2023 Benje, which has 9% Listán Blanco and 1% Tintilla grapes to complement the Listán Prieto, comes from a very warm and dry year in Santiago del Teide when the vines got blocked and suffered a lot, as they also did in 2019. With the experience from that year, they did a softer vinification, with shorter macerations and extraction. Here, it was an even warmer and earlier year than 2022, with more immediate wines, approachable and open from the very beginning. It’s floral, aromatic and expressive, fine-boned and harmonious, with good freshness. 18,000 bottles and 250 magnums produced. It was bottled in May 2024.”

Envínate Migan Chingao, Tenerife 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $94.50, that’s $89.78 at 5% off and $85.05 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2022 Migan Chingao was produced with Listán Negro grapes from cordón trenzado braided ancient vines from a 1.4-hectare vineyard called La Habanera in the Valle de la Orotava at 550 to 600 meters in altitude on bland basalt soils and a north-facing exposition. It fermented with 100% full clusters in concrete for 17 days and matured in a 4,200-liter concrete vat without racking or any added sulfur at any point of the process. It was bottled directly from the vat unfined and unfiltered to keep as much carbonic gas as possible, as it would act as preservative. It has a clean and precise nose, with some reductive character and no sign of evolution or deviation. It’s a textbook red from La Orotava with dried roses, black pepper and lapilli notes and a tasty palate and a dry and chalky finish. This is only sold in the US. 2,000 bottles and 24 magnums were filled in July 2023.”

Envínate La Santa de Ursula, Tenerife 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 1 bottle in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Beautiful nose full of white pepper funk, grapefruit, wild raspberries, chalk and mineral. On the palate, this is ethereal and lively but super tense with a bit more verticality than the equally attractive, funky but linear Táganan. Textured, mineral and wild finish that develops in the finish. Goes on and on. Delicious and so drinkable now, but this can age, for a decade, too, if not more.”

Envínate La Santa de Ursula, Tenerife 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 32 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This is timid aromatically, with subtle pepper, cherries, pomegranates and a stony asphalt note. The palate is incisive and medium-bodied, showing concentration. A solid and complete wine with everything in place. This is a blend of 48% negramoll, 50% listan negro and 2% listan blanco from three parcels in the area of Corujera. It’s fermented with 50% whole clusters. Drinkable now, but should evolve nicely with age.”

Envínate Vidueño de Santiago del Teide, Tenerife 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The pale 2023 Vidueño from Santiago del Teide comes from two plots planted with mixed varieties, probably with more white this year—up to 60%, hence the color—because of the lower crop in red. This is bottled without any added sulfur, but the wine is neat, clean and precise. They did a shorter maceration in this warm and concentrated year. The higher percentage of white seems to lift up the wine. It has 12% alcohol and a pH of 3.2 with 6.2 grams of acidity. It feels more like a white this year… There are only 530 bottles and six magnums of this. It was bottled June 2024.”

Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea, Ribeira Sacra 2020 1.5L Displayed Price: $88, that’s $83.60 at 5% off and $79.20 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The 2020 Lousas Viñas de Aldea is slightly higher in alcohol and has less freshness than the 2019. It was a very early harvest (September 2nd to 14th), and they kept 20% of the wine in concrete and the rest in oak barrels and 2,000-liter oak foudres for 11 months. The grapes were very small, so the ratio of juice to skin was different from 2019. The wines from 2020 had less maceration and more stems; they have more bones but are still fluid, with some dusty tannins. 22,500 bottles and 400 magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2021.”

Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea, Ribeira Sacra 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea, Ribeira Sacra 2021 1.5L Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Excellent depth with a vibrant lift of pepperiness to the wild and airy bramble fruit and minerality. Chalky and broad on the palate but really weightless with chalky tannins and a fresh, refined finish. Delicious now.”

Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea, Ribeira Sacra 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Envínate Lousas Viñas de Aldea, Ribeira Sacra 2022 1.5L Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 3 magnums in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“This has a fascinating nose that shows pepper, dried herbs, wild red fruit and a pleasant, enveloping herbal note. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins, focused and delineated, with lots of precision and a savory sensation. An outstanding entry-level wine in the region. This comes from multiple plots in the Amandi, Quiroga and Mino areas. Each plot is vinified separately with varying proportions of whole bunches. Aging takes place mostly in barriques with a smaller proportion in cement. Drink now.”

Envínate Lousas Doad, Ribeira Sacra 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 94-95 points
“The 2022 Doad Lousas is the second vintage of the village red. It comes from gneiss and schist soils from the traditional zone of the Sil and is warmer and riper, a textbook example of ripe Mencía fruit, an earlier zone with juicy wines. As with the rest of the 2022s, I tasted the wine after it had been blended and the sulfur adjusted, waiting in stainless steel to be bottled in a couple of months. It has the textbook floral and perfumed nose, quite fruit-driven, juicy and tasty, with some fine tannins that need a bit of time in bottle to get polished. They expect to fill some 3,300 bottles from a number of barrels of different sizes.”

Envínate Lousas Rosende Lousas, Ribeira Sacra 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 95-96 points
“The 2022 Rosende Lousas is the second vintage of the new village wine from Rosende, the only zone in Ribeira Sacra where they have granite soils. The wine is superb, more reductive and austere than the majority of 2022s, closer to the style of the 2021s. This is a rocky 2022, very soil driven, long and textured, sharper, very interesting. They expect to fill some 3,300 bottles in November 2023.”

Envínate Lousas Parcela Seoane, Ribeira Sacra 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutiérrez-Wine Advocate 96-97 points
“I also had the chance to taste the still-unbottled 2022 Lousas Parcela Seoane that had already been taken out of barrel, put in stainless steel and the sulfur was adjusted, so it’s pretty close to what the bottled wine should be. This is a specific plot in the village of Doade with gneiss and quartz. It has the expressive nose of the zone, serious and mineral, but with a perfumed nose too, with a note of blood orange and the faint volatility that lifts up the nose. There’s a lot of energy here; it excels in 2022. It comes from very old vines planted in the 1930s. There will be around 2,000 bottles that they expect to fill around November 2023.”

Envínate Misturado de Abeleda, Ribeira Sacra 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $54.50, that’s $51.78 at 5% off and $49.05 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Jose Pastor Selections Importer Note
“This wine is a field blend, with about 65% red grapes (Mencia, Brancellao, Alicante Bouschet, Mouraton, Gran Negro) and 35% white grapes (Godello, Torrontes, Treixadura, Albariño, Doña Branca). Vineyard: From a plot of 80-year-old vines at roughly 650m above sea level by the Sil river with gneiss and schist soils. It is planted in the old style of co-planting white and red grape varieties.”
