This historic Umbrian estate works with ancient marine soils dating back over three million years. As the first-in-the-US to carry a wide range of these sustainably produced wines in stock and by-the-bottle, we are offering five wines: two Super Tuscan-style red blends and three mineral-driven whites.
Tasting them, you know that these might just be the best value in Italian wine you’ll find in our shop. Were these Tuscan or even French, we’d expect them to go for double easily. It doesn’t hurt, either, that we’re the lowest in the country across the board, and not by insignificant amounts. (Pro tip: the wines are all bottled under Diam corks, which means there’s no risk of cork taint.)
Start with their refreshing “Casa Pica” bottling sourced from younger Vermentino vines (made famous in Sardinia yet tragically overlooked elsewhere in Italy), named for the century-old family farmhouse. Then look to their Orvieto Classico “Frammento,” which blends of fragrant indigenous and internationally famous grapes with more heft and complexity (recognized as a “Top Wine” by Slow Wine multiple years in a row). Finally for whites, we reach the apex: “Mare Antico” (ancient sea, a nod to the terroir). This Orvieto Classico Superiore includes Chardonnay in the blend for a truly thrilling taste-driven tour of the essence of the place.
Moving to the reds, we have two blends. The first, the “Battito,” is a Sangiovese-Cabernet-Merlot number with character to spare. The bottle features an ancient Latin palindrome “In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni,” which they translate as “we wander in the night and are consumed by fire.” With such evocative inspiration, it’s no wonder this wine exudes hedonism and class. It’s a wine to spark passion and pleasure, or, as the winery puts it, the wine calls you to “indulge in an exciting journey through your deepest desires and allow yourself to be consumed by its fiery passion.”
The top red bottling, “A.D. 1212,” is named for the year in which clergy first made wine at what is now the estate. The hand on the label is in homage to their imprint on the estate. This is the only red vinified in French oak. It’s Syrah-based, with a splash of Montepulciano to add verve. It’s a sensuous wine that will satisfy now and for years to come.

James Suckling “A simple and bright nose with wet stones, pomelo, lemon zest and sliced apples. Dry and a bit tart on the palate with medium intensity of lemon citrus. Drink now.”

Decugnano dei Barbi Frammento Orvieto Classico, Umbria 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $16, that’s $15.20 at 5% off and $14.40 at 10% off, 33 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 91 points “Subtle minerality to the salted lemons and tarragon herbs. Linear and bright on the medium-bodied palate with a streamlined structure and creamy texture. Dry and tangy finish. 55% grechetto, 20% sauvignon blanc, 20% vermentino and 5% procanico. Drink now.”
Winery Note “Immerse yourself in the experience of tasting our Orvieto Classico, Frammento – an elegant and pleasantly versatile wine, perfect for accompanying your everyday moments. Its name evokes the fragments of seashells that fill our soils, witnesses of the sea that once covered them millions of years ago. But it also evokes the philosophical concept of terroir, and the fact that even in a sip of wine (a “fragment”), the totality of the soul of the place is still preserved.”

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Mare Antico’ Orvieto Classico Superiore, Umbria 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $21.90, that’s $20.81 at 5% off and $19.71 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points “Wickedly fresh and wafting up like a cool breeze off an alpine peak, the 2021 Orvieto Classico Superiore Mare Antico mixes crushed rock with raw almonds, hints of sage and ginger. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness contrasted by candied lime and salty minerals. It flows across the palate with ease, long and citrus-tinged. It tapers off structured and crisp, with a green apple crunch and residual acids keeping the mouth watering for more. The complexity here is off the charts, coupled with fantastic balance. The Mare Antico is beautiful today but with a bright future as well. Drink: 2024-2034. (Oct 2023)”
Winery Note “Mare Antico is the wine that best represents Decugnano dei Barbi. The name itself refers to that ancient sea on which our vineyards grow today. The grapes come from our oldest vineyards, whose roots lie in sandy and shell-rich soils to capture the soul of the place and transform it into a delicious drop of wine.”

Decugnano dei Barbi Il Rosso di Decugnano A.D. 1212 Umbria IGT 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 92+ points “Purple-tinged and dark as night, the 2019 Il Rosso A.D.1212 holds my attention firm, grumbling up with an earthy mix of citrus-kissed blackberries, dried flowers and crushed ashen stone. This is pure elegance on the palate, silky and streamlined with mounting minerality that adds traction as floral-laced black fruits and exotic spices resonate throughout. The 2019 holds its power in reserve, youthfully shutting down in the glass while leaving a delicate web of chiseled tannins that penetrate deeply as a cascade of inner violet and lavender tones linger on. The A.D.1212 is a testament to red varieties from the southern reaches of Umbria. It’s a blend of 65% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Montepulciano that may even warrant a higher score as it matures. Very Nice.”
VinopolNote: This wine evokes the phrase “Super Umbrian” – a powerful and rich exploration of reds from the Orvieto, at a don’t-miss price, especially when compared to Super Tuscans. Blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Montepulciano.

Decugnano dei Barbi ‘Battito’ Umbria IGT 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $17, that’s $16.15 at 5% off and $15.30 at 10% off, 36 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 91 points “Cherry stones, tomatoes, peppercorns and raspberries on the nose. Its fresh, savory and peppery, with fine and well-integrated tannins and a medium body. Supple finish. Drink or hold.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 90 points “The 2020 Umbria Rosso Battito is a lovely and easy-to-like blend of 34% Sangiovese, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot. It opens with cooling mint and stone dust, giving way to dried strawberries on the delicate yet highly attractive bouquet. It impresses further with its soft yet juicy textures and vividly ripe red and blue fruits, all complemented by violet inner florals. This finishes spicy and with medium length. Significantly fresher and lifted than expected, yet potent all the same. Of note, in past vintages, this was labeled as Villa Barbi.”
Winery Note “Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and Merlot. Battito evokes the human nature and our passions. Its label, adorned with a moth, bears the ancient Latin palindrome ‘In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni'” which means ‘we wander in the night and are consumed by fire.’ It is a powerful and symbolic image of our insatiable craving for pleasures that will ultimately consume us. Battito is a wine with an intense and broad aroma that explodes in the mouth with a full and generous taste, structured and full-bodied. It is the perfect companion for red meats and aged cheeses, enhancing its complexity and depth.”

Schatzel
Though the Rheinhessen fell out of favor post-WWII, Schätzel was one of the few families to hold to tradition. They kept the candle of quality burning, so to speak, until attitudes, climate, and renewed interest in Riesling returned. (Having been Rheinhessen Riesling wine makers for 650 years, the family understand patience.)
Kai Schätzel is the current family member to head the estate. Talented, ambitious, and a member of the VDP, Schätzel makes compelling wines from some of the finest vineyards in the Rheinhessen. As owner and winemaker, Kai Schätzel works in a reductive, mineral-driven style, taking cues from Burgundy.
These top-class wines are age-worthy and profound—well capable of holding their own with other top echelon producers in Germany. He’s a humble artist, though. Whenever he speaks about his wines, he emphasizes the microclimates, terroir, and sustainable growing techniques (all vineyards are certified organic). So, pop a bottle of ancient, steadfast history. We know you’ll want to listen in.
“Schätzel is one of the most exciting Riesling producers along the Rhine River and even if you don’t like his firmly structured and straightforward Rieslings and gorgeous Sylvaners when young, you will be impressed by their mouth-filling and structured character after a couple of years… Riesling lovers have to check out this domaine.” –Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Weingut Schatzel Nierstein Riesling Kabinett, Rheinhessen 2017 750ml Was $29, Now $24, 7 bottles in stock now
Steve Spurrier-Decanter 92 points “This Riesling, from red slate soil on ultra-steep, south-facing slopes, ferments and matures in a 670-year-old cellar to produce a floral, fresh and pure vineyard wine, with just 7.5% abv, the 42g/l sugar and 11.5g/l acidity in perfect balance. Quite lovely.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 92 points “So much freshness and energy with tons of elderflowers and white fruit. Super-crisp and very clean palate and a breathtaking finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Weingut Schatzel Pettenthal Riesling Kabinett “S”, Rheinhessen 2017 750ml Was $79, Now $69, 9 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “Forget the rules, pack your bag, grab this bottle and leave your old life behind! Savage mineral beauty, combined with light body and enormous brightness. Drink or hold.”
David Schildknecht-Vinous 92 points “The ‘S’ here references south-facing slopes in the Pettenthal (whereas previous Schätzel Pettenthal Kabinetts have come from a portion of Pettenthal – arguably predestined for Kabinett – that turns north up against the Brudersberg). Pungent kumquat and tangerine on the nose translate into downright sizzling zest and grip on this wine’s alcoholically ultra-light yet concentrated and almost lushly fruity palate. A vibrantly sustained finish carries Pettenthal-typical smokiness as well as saliva-inducing salinity. High residual sugar – as reflected in a mere 7.5% alcohol – manages to engender only an engaging and supportive sense of sweetness.”
