The Conterno name is beloved in Barolo. There are six producers that share it, with varying degrees of relation. Today, we’re featuring three that best represent a spectrum of traditional to modern-leaning while sharing a dedication to quality. Explore what makes each so special and combine to maximize your savings!

Giacomo Conterno

Giacomo Conterno wines are highly limited but well worth the hunt. These are among the top tier of wines being produced in all of Italy. The wines are always powerful and traditional, but with an elegance and grace that seems to transcend the immediate impact of flavor and leave you searching for descriptors to capture what you’ve tasted.  We love the wines and if you are thinking about trying them—during our three-day sale is your perfect opportunity.

The way these wines have become collectable, it’s going to be ever more difficult to source them.

Aldo Conterno

Son of the famous Giacomo Conterno, Aldo purchased his own estate, Favot, in 1969 to explore alternatives to the strictly traditional methods of the family estate. He took inspiration from Angelo Gaja and from his experiences while traveling in the United States.

Although he introduced some modern winemaking techniques that improved the quality of the wines, including temperature-controlled fermentation, he never fully embraced the “modern” heavily oak-influenced style. He eschewed new oak on the Barolos and continued to hand-harvest the grapes, using gentle pressing and shorter macerations in the cellar.

The results were polished and elegant wines with pure and bold fruit profiles. Since his passing in 2012, his three sons have run the estate. These are standard bearer wines for the region, and worthy of a dedicated spot in your cellar.

Conterno Fantino

Claudio Conterno and Guido Fantino founded this winery in 1982, which is now located in Monforte d’Alba. The winery works exclusively with estate-grown fruit from 26 hectares of vines, which is personally cultivated by family members. Fruit is carefully hand-selected into small crates to preserve the fragile aromatics before undergoing spontaneous fermentation. The estate employs French barriques, new wood, and limited additions of sulfur to craft opulent and polished wines. They’ve been certified organic since 2014. You won’t find an entry-level Barolo here. Instead, the winery crafts its Langhe Nebbiolo as a calling-card (without the eye-watering price of others that take their Langhe wines seriously).

“I was so impressed with these 2017 Barolos from Conterno-Fantino. Quite simply, these are some of the most convincing wines of the year. Moreover, the overall level is pretty much on par with 2016, which is remarkable and points to the level of seriousness found at this reference point estate perched in the hills outside the Monforte town center.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Conterno bottles in stock @ VinopolisPoderi Aldo Conterno Colonnello, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Was $179, Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ points
“The Poderi Aldo Conterno 2017 Barolo Bussia Colonnello shows good focus, structure and a sharper character that is often the distinguishing factor in this wine. The bouquet is redolent of dark fruit and plum, but it also shows a solid framing of iron ore and dark stony mineral. These give the wine greater lift and contoured edges. This is not the first time that Colonnello is my favorite wine in this lineup, and I suspect it won’t be the last.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Offering plum, cherry, iron, eucalyptus and black pepper aromas and flavors, this broad red has absorbed the oak treatment pretty well already, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and long, ending with elements of mineral and spice. Best from 2025 through 2043. —B.S.”

Poderi Aldo Conterno Granbussia, Barolo Riserva DOCG 2012 750ml Was $889, Displayed Price: $789, that’s $749.55 at 5% off and $710.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“The earthy, woodsy aromas show some evolution in this red, with just a hint of white truffle, yet there’s still a hefty dose of spicy oak to be resolved. Rich and sumptuous midpalate, showing plum, cherry, tar and tobacco flavors shaded by vanilla and toasty spices, with firm, dusty tannins laying a grip on the long finish. Give this another year or two in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2042. From Italy. —B.S.”

Conterno Fantino ‘Ginestrino’ Langhe Nebbiolo 2018 750ml Was $41.90, Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The Conterno Fantino 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo Ginestrino opens to fragrant and delicate aromas straight from the Nebbiolo playlist. The wine opens to pretty aromas of wild cherry, rose, blood orange and iron ore. Winemaking starts with stainless steel and concludes with 10 months in French oak. The vines are planted in clay soils, and when you study the bouquet in depth, you do perceive a tad more structure and concentration as a result. Production is an ample 35,500 bottles.”

Conterno Fantino Mosconi, Barolo DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Decanter 96 points
“Among the 27 hectares of Conterno Fantino is Vigna Ped, an east-facing cru within the Mosconi MGA. Similar to Ginestra, in 2017 it seems to be a bit rounder and less austere. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation naturally in the spring. It displays intense leafy lightness with wild strawberry puree and liquorice root, but also whiffs of truffle and cocoa powder. The attack is firm and assertive, with both acidity and tannins – which are large, grainy and ripe. The structure is well balanced by fruit concentration, vibrancy and complexity. Despite its meatiness, it’s not ready to drink yet. For the long haul. Drinking Window 2022 – 2040.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “The 2017 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is deep, resonant and expansive, as wines from this site tend to be. In this tasting, the Mosconi is wonderfully deep. Its stature alone is compelling. And yet there is so much to the Mosconi. Readers will find a Barolo that melds together a rich, racy expression of fruit with plenty of structure that wraps everything together. Rich red fruit, blood orange, tar, spice and cedar build as the 2017 gains volume through to the finish.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2021 Barbera d’Alba Vigna Cerretta is bright, focused and nervy. Blood orange, red cherry fruit, spice and mint all race across the palate. There’s tremendous energy and tension running through the 2021. Vibrant saline notes round out the finish.”

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Giacomo Conterno Cerretta, Barolo DOC 2018 1.5L Displayed Price: $599, that’s $569.05 at 5% off and $539.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95-97 points
“Tasted from barrel, the Giacomo Conterno 2018 Barolo Cerretta is shaping up to be a beauty. What stands out most at this very young stage is the quality and the elegant tightness of the tannins. Cerretta fruit from Serralunga d’Alba makes for powerful, structured and concentrated Nebbiolo that is delivered with naked clarity and outstanding purity. These qualities are clearly linked to the vineyard site and less to the conservative efforts executed at the winery. You taste the crunch or the nervous quality of the grape skins and pulp with dark and purple berry nuances and rusty or mineral overtones that hint at the more significant presence of clay in these soils.”

Giacomo Conterno Arione, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $235, that’s $223.25 at 5% off and $211.50 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94-96 points
“Tasted from barrel, the 2018 Barolo Arione still has another year in botte and time in bottle before its commercial release. However, the wine shows a distinct personality that is immediately gentle and open-knit despite its very young age. With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, there is ethereal softness here, but this characterization is relative considering the ample power and depth always associated with this site. It feels like this 2018 vintage is still warming up and is slowly putting on volume and weight. Its metamorphosis is far from complete. However, what you can read into the wine now is the quality of its fruit and its classic Nebbiolo aromas of wild berry, pressed violet, rust and blood orange.”

Giacomo Conterno Francia, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $249, that’s $236.55 at 5% off and $224.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Giacomo Conterno Francia, Barolo DOCG 2018 3L Displayed Price: $1,349, that’s $1,281.55 at 5% off and $1,214.10 at 10% off, 1 double-magnum in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95+ points
“The 2018 Barolo Francia is powerful, deep and also a touch austere. It shows the edginess of all the 2018s, but also has a feeling of textural creaminess that adds tons of character. Spice, menthol, leather and a whole range of balsamic overtones build into the deep, imposing finish. Roberto Conterno decided to forego his Barolo Monfortino in 2018, opting instead to blend all the casks into his Francia bottling. When that happens, Francia often surprises down the road. That could very well turn out to be the case here.”
