Cascina delle Rose & Ca’ del Baio

We’re featuring two fan-favorite Barbaresco estates on our three-day sale starting now. Cascina delle Rose and Ca’ del Baio are both family-owned estates releasing traditionally-styled, environmentally-minded wines of depth, character, and nuance.

Cascina delle Rose flies under the radar for most, but crafts charming and soulful wines that are easy to love, drink, and enjoy. The wines strive for beauty, achieving soaring aromatics and beguiling textures—and are surprisingly age-worthy for such ethereal bottlings.

The Rizzolio family purchased the estate in the 1940s, but didn’t produce commercial releases until the 1980s when the vines were mature enough to offer consistent and complex crops. Today, the estate is helmed by Giovanna Rizzolio alongside her partner, Italo Sobrino, and their sons, Riccardo and Davide. The winemaking here is extremely traditional, and the vineyard management is fully organic.

The Tre Stelle single-vineyard bottling is the signature of the estate with its calcareous soils. They are the only winery to bottle this as a cru. The wine offers more immediacy than its sibling with a limestone-imparted elegance. The Rio Sordo single-vineyard bottling tends towards shyness at first, but give this a bit longer in the cellar and it will reward with class and precision.

Ca’ del Baio is a family-owned Barbaresco estate in Treiso that’s been crafting wine for over 150 years. Their vineyards are farmed sustainably with biodiversity in mind and no synthetic fertilizers or herbicides. The wines undergo a long and slow maceration before aging in neutral Slavonian oak boti, resulting in fresh and aromatic wines with a rich complexity and glorious tannic structure.

The Autinbej is a blend of the sunniest parcels in the crus of Treiso, Marcarini, and Ferrerre. It’s typically bold and intense with a ripe tannic profile. The Asili cru bottling includes the estate’s oldest vines. This is a long-lived wine with an ultra-classic profile. Finally, we have the Vallegrande. This is their most elegant bottling sourced from vines that surround the winery.

The results are traditionally-styled with more structure and density than Cascina delle Rose. If you don’t have the patience for cellaring, give them a healthy decant or pop a day before service to give them the proper time to blossom. At these prices, grab a few extra to enjoy for years to come.

Winery Note
“Arneis; 100% stainless steel. Mun Crü – in Piedmontese dialect, literally “raw bricks” – is the name that has always been used to indicate this particular area of Neive. As the production is very limited, it is always offered first to our historical customers. Sensory notes: Bright and intense yellow, with golden reflections. Elegant floral notes, jasmine, hints of sweet citrus peel, white peach and acacia honey. Intriguing structure, full of flavors. Round and balanced, savory and with a long finish.”

Cascina delle Rose Langhe Nebbiolo 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 89 points
“The 2023 Langhe Nebbiolo is an attractive, deeply aromatic wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, sweet red-tone fruit, spice and hard candy lend an exotic flair. This mid-weight Langhe Nebbiolo is a charmer. (Drink between 2024-2028).”
Winery Note “The vineyard is located in the municipality of Barbaresco, in lean soils, rich in mineral salts and densely stratified. Bright garnet red, elegant fruity and floral notes, deep, clean, the clear expression of the grape variety. Dense texture of tannins, fine, silky. Very persistent finish.”

Cascina delle Rose Marcorino, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’Keefe 97 points
“A new entry for Cascina delle Rose, the fragrant 2021 Marcorino opens with enticing aromas of violet, rose, menthol and pine forest. Made with grapes hailing from the Marcorino cru in Neive, it showcases the estate’s hallmark elegance and winemaker Davide Sobrino’s delicate hand, delivering juicy raspberry, succulent red cherry, star anise and a hint of almond before a savory mineral close. It’s linear and loaded with energy and finesse thanks to firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity.”

Cascina delle Rose Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $74.50, that’s $70.78 at 5% off and $67.05 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“This is Cascina delle Rose’s other single-vineyard wine from a second nearby site in the village of Barbaresco. The 2020 Barbaresco Rio Sordo is slightly more linear and streamlined compared to the Tre Stelle in this vintage. That wine felt more immediate to me, but the Rio Sordo feels more long-term thanks to elegant fruit, crushed stone and sweet licorice aromas it offers.”

Cascina delle Rose Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $89, that’s $84.55 at 5% off and $80.10 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’Keefe 97 points
“The 2021 Cascina delle Rose Rio Sordo is another stunner from this fantastic estate starting with its compelling aromas of forest berry, camphor, wild rose and dark exotic spice. More firmly structured than Tre Stelle and Marcorino, it has tightly wound, fine-grained tannins that support juicy Morello cherry, raspberry, licorice and ground clove while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized. This needs a little more time to fully come together and will age beautifully.”

Cascina delle Rose Tre Stelle, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $74.50, that’s $70.78 at 5% off and $67.05 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2020 Barbaresco Tre Stelle is a delight to drink. The character of this vintage is more accessible for sure, and the fruit is very bright and supple. But there’s no harm in drinking this warm-vintage release of 7,500 bottles on the early side while all its primary aromas are so intact and enticing. The tannins are soft, and the wine shows medium richness to close.”

Ca’ del Baio Asili, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 14 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2021 Barbaresco Asili shows all the pedigree of this great site. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, mint, cinnamon and rose petals soar from the glass. Medium in body yet wonderfully deep, the Asili has so much to offer. What a pretty and expressive wine it is. Give it a few years in bottle.”

Ca’ del Baio Autinbej, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91 points
“The 2021 Barbaresco Autinbej is bright, vibrant and effusive. A blend of mostly Marcarini with some fruit from Ferrere and Montersino, the Autinbej offers up scents of pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and licorice, all in a deceptively mid-weight style that is quite appealing. There’s lovely energy and focus here. The 2021 opens beautifully with a bit of air.”

Ca’ del Baio Vallegrande, Barbaresco DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $34.50, that’s $32.78 at 5% off and $31.05 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 94 points
“The 2019 Barbaresco Vallegrande is broad and ample in the glass. Deeply pitched spice notes open first. Dark and mysterious in the glass, with tons of complexity, the Vallegrande is quite virile in feel, with all the elements impeccably balanced. It’s another terrific wine from the Grasso Family. The Vallegrande exudes Treiso character. That makes it quintessential Ca’ Del Baio Barbaresco.”

Ca’ del Baio Vallegrande, Barbaresco DOCG 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $34.50, that’s $32.78 at 5% off and $31.05 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2021 Barbaresco Vallegrande is a complex, dynamic wine. Spice and floral inflections fill out the layers, giving this Barbaresco notable amplitude. Macerated dark cherry, leather, tobacco, dried flowers and incense develop later, adding layers of nuance. There’s certainly plenty to like, starting with the wine’s substance and overall palate presence.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:

Pommery

While you can be forgiven for not knowing Louise Pommery, Champagne as we know it would not exist without her contributions. In the 1870’s Champagne was one of the sweetest wines in the world. Sugar helped balance out the otherwise searing acidity that was seen in Champagnes of the period, and the sweetness catered to commercial preferences of the era.

This all changed when Madame Louise Pommery commissioned her cellar master to make a Champagne with as little added sugar as possible, creating the category we now know to be “Brut”. The debut vintage was an overnight success in England, which had developed a preference for drier styles of wine. The Brut style redefined Champagne and is now the typical style by far.

In honor of her legacy, this top cuvee  has the barest amount of sugar added. Comprised of three Grand Cru vineyard sources in Avize, Cramant, and Aÿ, it is aged for eleven years on its lees before disgorgement. The blend itself is predominantly Chardonnay with Pinot Noir. The Grand Cru sources for the fruit are clearly evident in the concentrated flavors, strong mineral character and high acidity. This is Champagne built for the long haul backed by centuries of history.
