Alzinger: Austria’s Ace at 10% Off! 2-2-25

If Vinopolis is famous for one thing, it’d be our obsession with the wines of the Germany and Austria. Moments within your visit to our shop you will discover several aisles dedicated solely to the beautiful expressions of wine that come from these nations; shelf-space that is normally reserved exclusively for well-understood regions of France & Italy. The reason? These wines are INCREDIBLE. The cool climate of these Northern growing areas creates whites that shimmer on the palate, twisting and turning with electric acidity and dazzling fruit flavors. We collect new and old releases from many producers to showcase the wide range in style and terroir that these wines can express. One such producer you simply must know about is Alzinger.

Alzinger
Based in the village of Unterloiben, the Alzinger house farms some of the steepest Wachau vineyards in Austria. If you traded the granite for slate, you’d think you were in a Mosel village like the Saar or Terrassenmosel. Leo Alzinger took over his family’s estate after apprenticing in Marlborough, New Zealand and the Pfalz, Germany where he crafted his house style. This technical knowledge is evident in his wines, which he vinifies whole cluster with a touch of skin contact and extended lees aging.

Alzinger’s vineyards include some of the Wachau’s most prestigious sites, such as Loibenberg, Steinertal, and Höhereck, where dramatic shifts in temperature and ancient primary rock soils contribute to wines of remarkable tension and depth. Their Grüner Veltliners balance bright citrus and herbal spice with remarkable elegance, while their Rieslings showcase pure stone fruit flavors, racy acidity, and a long, mineral-laden finish. Each wine is classified within the Vinea Wachau system, ranging from the vibrant and early-drinking Federspiel bottlings to the powerful, age-worthy Smaragd selections that embody the pinnacle of Wachau winemaking.

James Suckling 92 Points “Clear and linear riesling showing aromas of lime peel, gooseberries, kumquats and wet stones. It,s medium-bodied, lively and energetic, with zippy acidity and a crisp, dry finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
Vinous 92 Points “The 2022 Riesling Dürnsteiner Federspiel was picked from various smaller parcels on the foot of the Loibenberg, including terraces of Loibenberg and Burgstall. Exquisitely pure bergamot notes are fragrant and enticing on the nose. The palate is chiseled, fine and taut, with a slightly riper note of citrus that reminds of Meyer lemon, yet still with the fragrant green citrus frisson. This is a bright, pure wine of exquisite slenderness and citrus fragrance. (Bone-dry)”

Vinous 90 Points “The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Mühlpoint Federspiel, a site just underneath Steinertal, in the lower reaches where there’s more loess in the gneiss deposits. It’s gently savory on the nose and delivers yeast and pepper. The palate has a lovely stoniness and a slender aspect, with the pepperiness shimmering on the yeasty mid-palate. Lemon, stone and pepper make for a juicy, light-footed Federspiel. (Bone-dry)”

Alzinger Gruner Veltliner Muhlpoint 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off,  6 bottles available
Anne Kriebiehl MW-Vinous 93 Points “The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Mühlpoint Smaragd is harvested in this site’s upper, stonier part, directly bordering Steinertal. Beautiful fern, gentle yeast and fresh moss send green signals of freshness. The palate is a picture of smooth yeast, calm concentration and elongated freshness. This Grüner exemplifies the house style, peppery, smooth and long with serene subtlety and more pepper on the finish. (Bone-dry)”

Alzinger Ried Loibenberg Gruner Veltliner Smaragd 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $61.90, that’s $58.80 at 5% off and $55.71 at 10% off,  6 bottles available

Alzinger Gruner Steinertal Smaragd 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles available
Anne Kriebiehl MW-Vinous 95-97 Points “The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Steinertal Smaragd is picked on this terraced gneiss site, cooled by cold Waldviertel air that is channeled through gullies. Spicy ferns are open and enticing on the nose. A lovely frisson of white pepper is carried on lemony juiciness. The palate has the customary cut, the usual precision and exquisite tension. This is masterful, yet it has the mellower creaminess of 2023 without sacrificing its essential, cool character. The mid-palate concentrates pepper and yeast. Great work. (Bone-dry)”

Alzinger Loibner Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.27 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 4 bottles available
Anne Kriebiehl MW-Vinous 95-97 Points “The 2023 Riesling Loibenberg Smaragd is picked in one parcel of poor soil that is steep and a complete suntrap that becomes shaded in the afternoon, mixing the warm site with a cooler element. Yeast and a touch of passion fruit foliage set the tone on the nose. The palate is a picture of slenderness, tautness, citric tension and freshness. A stony backdrop heightens that sleekness and has the name Alzinger printed all over it. Taut, fresh and zesty. (Bone-dry)”

Alzinger Hollerin Riesling Smaragd 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $61.90, that’s $58.80 at 5% off and $55.71 at 10% off, 6 bottles available
Anne Kriebiehl MW-Vinous 94 Points “The 2022 Riesling Hollerin Smaragd is a Riesling site with deeper loam soils mixed with weathered gneiss, facing southwest. The subtle nose hints at tangerine and Navel orange peel. That riper citrus vibe comes to the fore with full juiciness on the smooth, defined, slender palate, where Navel orange expands with both fragrance and zestiness. Taut, full-fruited, and aromatic, this shows notable length. (Bone-dry)”
James Suckling 93 points “A peachy and creamy riesling showing open aromas of apricots, peach pits, orange curd and meadow herbs. It’s medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and juicy, with a fresh and zesty finish. Drink now or hold.”
