Featured Pre-Arrival

Roagna’s Much Anticipated 2015s

Roagna has joined the very upper echelon of Piedmont producers over the past decade and a half. These resolutely traditional wines hail from some of the best parcels in Paje and Pira (a Roagna monopole), plus recently acquired vineyards including Albasani. Perennial staff favorites, the entire lineup is absolutely brilliant. The problem for us staffers is that each year less and less of our allocation remains available after our pre-arrival offer.

We’re set to receive our allocation from the celebrated 2015 vintage (Roagna holds their wine back before release—another old-school commitment) in February. But quantities are once again modest, and we expect our knowledgeable Piedmont buyers to move quickly, so don’t sleep on these benchmark wines.

Pre-Arrivals ETA February:

Roagna Albesani, Barbaresco DOCG 2015 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points
“A combination of spicy cherry, iron, tobacco and tar aromas and flavors are woven into the dense tannins in this sinewy red. There’s an essence of ripe fruit, yet this requires time to reconcile its gripping structure. Best from 2024 through 2043. 218 cases made. — BS”
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The 2015 Barbaresco Albesani is gracious, floral and lifted, which is not common in Albesani, where the wines tend to be more powerful. Bright acids and lively tannins give the 2015 its shape and energy. This translucent, inviting Barbaresco has so much to offer. “

Roagna Faset, Barbaresco DOCG 2015 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 95 points
“This red shows some breadth and muscle, with lively cherry, strawberry, iron, tobacco and earth flavors. Taut yet balanced, with plenty of sweet fruit offsetting the tannins on the finish. Combines grace with power. Best from 2022 through 2040. 172 cases made. — BS”

Roagna Gallina, Barbaresco DOCG 2015 750ML ($149.95) $125 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 97 points
“Very aromatic, boasting rose, strawberry, cherry and wild herb, with a mineral element emerging midpalate as this becomes even more supple and complex, changing from beginning to end. Beguiling and harmonious. Drink now through 2030. 239 cases made. — BS”

Roagna Paje, Barbaresco DOCG 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 96 points
“Mulled cherry, plum and spice flavors are shaded by rose, mineral and tar in this nimble yet powerful red, which gains intensity as it builds to a lingering aftertaste of dried fruit, mineral and spice. Offers superb energy and length. Best from 2023 through 2042. 634 cases made. — BS”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Roagna La Pira, Barolo DOCG2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Supple and polished, featuring the essence of cherry and strawberry fruit, accented by menthol, mineral and sage flavors. This shows intensity, with a tightly wound structure that is so well-integrated you don’t notice it at first. Plays out on the linear profile with echoes of fruit, mineral and Langhe scrub. Best from 2022 through 2045. 148 cases made. — BS”

Goyo Garcia Viadero’s Coveted Ribera del Duero

The wines of Goyo Garcia Viadero are some very special wines from Spain. Based in Ribera del Duero, which is known for blockbuster/oaky wines, these instead temper the region’s natural generosity with elegance and panache. That’s not to say that these beauties aren’t powerful, but rather that they go to nine-and-a-half instead of eleven.

The only catch is that these wines are beloved in their native country and most of the production is sold to top restaurants in Madrid and Barcelona. The single-vineyard bottlings, in particular, are highly coveted and our “generous” allocation was a case or two of each. Taste for yourself what all the fuss is about.

In Stock Now:

Goyo Garcia Viadero Finca El Peruco, Ribera del Duero 2014 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 9 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 95 points
“Readers may recall that Goyo Garci´a’s Finca el Peruco bottling hails from an eighty-five year-old vineyard that includes fifteen percent of the white grape of Albillo co-planted with the Tempranillo. The 2014 vintage of this fine single vineyard bottling tips the scales at 13.5 percent alcohol and delivers a fine young aromatic constellation of red plums, cherries, gentle spice tones of nutmeg and cinnamon, chalky soil tones, a bit of cocoa powder and a very discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and nicely tangy (from the inclusion of the Albillo?), with excellent transparency, a fine core of fruit, suave, ripe tannins and lovely focus and grip on the long, nascently complex and vibrant finish. This is tightly-knit out of the blocks and will need five to seven years to blossom, but this is going to be brilliant Ribera del Duero once it has blossomed! 2024-2065”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast today!

Goyo Garcia Viadero Finca Valdeolmos, Ribera del Duero 2014 750ML ($89.95) $66 special, 13 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 93+ points
“The 2014 vintage of Finca Valdeolmos from Goyo Garci´a is the new release of this single vineyard bottling. Readers may recall that these vines are well over eighty years of age, with the soils here a red sand topsoil over a hard base of limestone. The 2014 version of Finca Valdeolmos is a beautiful young wine, coming in at 13.5 percent octane and offering up stunning purity on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is still fairly primary, offering up a lovely blend of black cherries, plums, raw cocoa, a bit of lead pencil, a touch of clove, lovely, chalky soil tones and a hint of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and beautifully balanced, with an excellent core of fruit, fine soil signature, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, nascently complex and very, very promising finish. As always, this is a supremely elegant example of Ribera del Duero that will age very long and gracefully, but really deserves some time in the cellar to stretch its wings and start to blossom. 2023-2065”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

Goyo Garcia Viadero Viñas de Anguix – Fincas Viñas de Arcilla, Ribera del Duero 2014 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 19 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 93+ points
“The 2014 Finca Viñas de Arcilla from Goyo Garci´a is a tad riper than his other two single vineyard wines in 2014, coming in at an even fourteen percent, but offering the same classic balance and sense of classical restraint that defines all of Sen~or Garci´a’s wines. The bouquet wafts from the glass in more black fruity blend of cassis, black cherries, cigar smoke, lovely soil tones (there is more clay here than in el Peruco or Valdeolmos), chocolate and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and beautifully balanced, with a rock solid core, still very good acidity, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a very long, still fairly primary finish. There is terrific backend energy here, but the wine is properly structured and will need some cellaring before it is ready for primetime drinking. 2025-2065.”

This is the only listing in the USA today!

Goyo Garcia Viadero Joven Viñas Viejas, Ribera del Duero 2018 750ML ($34.95) $28 special, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine Advocate 92 points
“There is an unoaked red, the 2018 Joven de Viñas Viejas (young from old vines), produced with Tempranillo from vines planted in 1982; such grapes are usually destined for oak-aged wines, as they provide more complexity and concentration. There is some creaminess in the nose, which showed a combination of red and black fruit, clean and aromatic. The palate is medium-bodied, and there is good ripeness without excess, fine tannins and good freshness, with a lifted and dry finish. 20,000 bottles produced.-LG”
Importer Note “Joven de Viñas Viejas is from a single vineyard planted entirely to Tempranillo on sandy clay & limestone soils at high elevation. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, fermented with wild yeasts in steel tank with light extraction, then raised over the winter entirely in tank. Bottling is without fining or filtration, and only a tiny addition of SO2 if needed. This is a classic, young Ribera del Duero with an extra shade of vibrancy and fabulous tension between dark fruit, florals, mineral, and acidity. In short, the way Ribera should taste. Pair with blood sausage, charcuterie, and grilled lamb chops.”

Nicely balanced, built to age
Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez ‘Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León 2013 750ML ($44.95) $36 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-6 Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez ‘Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra’ Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León 2013 750ML ($259.95) $199 special (that’s only $33.17/bottle!)
James Sucking 96 points
“Exuberant red berries and cherries with a fine, rose-like edge and some coal smoke. Very juicy, fleshy, rich and ripe mid-palate with a dense, long and showy, glossy black-cherry finish. Drink or hold.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Cropped from a cooler and late ripening vintage, the 2013 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra resulted in fresh wines and certainly worked well with the slate soils of these old Garnacha vines in Cebreros. This has a very good balance between ripeness and freshness, power and elegance, with the character of the soils slowly coming through in the shape of fresh meat and beef blood, with the iron-like notes still pretty shy. This should develop nicely in bottle. 8,931 bottles produced.”

Galicia

A delicate expression of Albariño
Bodegas Gerardo Méndez Albariño Do Ferreiro Lourido, Rías Baixas 2018 750 ML ($59.95) $49 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez – Wine Advocate 94 points
“The sharper 2018 Lourido is the most delicate of their three single-vineyard bottlings, from a place very close to the sea on decomposed granite (sand) where the influence of the sea comes with the fog, not with the proximity to the sea, but here they get a very mineral wine, with lots of dry extract (power) and very fresh acidity. It was kept 11 months with lees, and they are thinking even longer with lees could be good for it. This is a mini cepas vellas, from 60- to 65-year-old vines. This is a profile I like very much; it pretty much showcases the style of Salnés. This is only the third vintage of this wine. 1,300 bottles were filled in September 2019. This is approachable, and I think it’s also going to age magnificently.”

Tons of complexity for the price
La Caña Albariño, Rías Baixas 2019 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
James Suckling 93 points
“A very precise and well made white with cooked apple, spicy pear and some crushed-cement character. Medium to full body with tangy acidity that gives tension to the pretty fruit. Drink or hold.”
Decanter 90 points “Dry-farmed, hand-harvested and with 25% of the blend fermented with wild yeast, this is a showcase of citrus fruit, where grapefruit, lime and lemon zest mingle on a creamy-textured palate thanks to eight months of lees ageing. The bright intensity carries through the finish with balance and elegance.”

“Made in the style of the ancients”
Nanclares y Prieto ‘Crisopa’ Branco Tradicional, Rías Baixas 2018 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez – Wine Advocate 94 points
“The completely unusual “orange” wine is a bright amber Albariño macerated with skins during the fermentation. The 2018 Crisopa, produced with grapes from the same vineyard as Soberrivas, has a completely different nose and a brighter and deeper color than any previous vintage. Perhaps the grapes were smaller and there might be more skins for the juice, and the wine underwent malolactic (at least partially). There are notes of apple liqueur, pollen and beeswax, and the palate is finely tannic. Here, the process overpowers the variety and place. It has lower acidity than most of the wines from the winery, but this is one of the finest examples of the type. It should develop nicely in bottle. 636 bottles were filled in August 2019.”
Importer note “Crisopa Branco Tradicional comes from the same parcel as “Soverribas” (Paraje Manzaniña) but is picked one day earlier to select the best bunches. After a wet and cool spring and summer, it turned dry and hot in August, with hand-harvesting on Sept. 10th through Oct. 6th. The grapes were foot-trodden in open plastic vats with 100% whole-clusters, and then skin-fermented for 20 days in a steel vat. After a vertical press the wine is racked into a used 500L French oak cask, where it rests for 11 months on the lees with battonage for first 3 months, before being bottled on Aug. 21st (fruit day) without clarification, filtration and only modest amounts of SO2. A fascinating and extremely textured Vinho Branco made in the style of the ancients!”

Priorat

Big, ripe, sexy
Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles, Priorat DOCa 2015 750ML ($74.95) $36 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Case-12 Ferrer Bobet Vinyes Velles, Priorat DOCa 2015 750ML ($699.95) $389 special (that’s only $32.42/bottle!)
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“The old vine 2015 Vinyes Velles checks in as a Carignan-dominated blend from vines just outside the village of Porrera that includes one-third Grenache, all of which spent over a year in French oak. It’s a bigger, riper, sexier wine than the Ferrer Bobet cuvée and boasts a deep purple color as well as rocking notes of black plums, black licorice, ground pepper, violets, and new leather. Ripe and full-bodied, with moderate acidity and terrific balance, it’s a seamless Priorat to enjoy over the coming 7-8 years or so.”
James Suckling 94 points “This really captures the freshness of the carignan grape with its bright cherry character. Medium-to full-bodied with spice from the grenache and excellent vitality on the long, crisp finish. Drink or hold.”

A fruit-driven crowd pleaser
Bodegas Mas Alta Artigas, Priorat DOCa 2016 750ML ($34.95) $29 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The red 2016 Artigas, a blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, feels a lot fresher and has better integrated oak than previous years. They used some (one-third) full clusters of Garnacha and Cariñena to ferment it with selected and indigenous yeasts, and it matured for 16 months in French oak barrels. It’s very fruit-driven, juicy and fluid, with a mixture of berries, spices and Mediterranean herbs, aromatic, open and attractive. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and integrated acidity. Drinkable and pleasant. 37,936 bottles produced. It was bottled in June and July 2018.”

Rioja

Serious polish thanks to 28 months in new French oak
Viñedos de Páganos El Puntido Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2007 ($69.95) $49 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points
[Reviewed June 2019] Putting my nose in the glass of the 2007 El Puntido Gran Reserva transported me to the classical Riojas from yesteryear. The wine has a fully developed nose with all the textbook descriptors of a good aged Rioja—forest floor, cigar ash, cold bonfire, truffle, cherries in liqueur, blonde tobacco, spices and iodine. But this is a classical Gran Reserva that has something that was not that traditional, and it comes from a single vineyard and matured in brand new French oak barrels for 28 months. But time in bottle has polished it (it was bottled in June 2010, almost nine years ago); the tannins are mostly resolved and it’s nicely textured. It has what I love about the best red wine—it’s salty rather than sweet, there is no room for sweetness here, and it’s sapid and tasty and has great balance and freshness. This is developing at a very slow pace and should continue doing so for a very long time. A great Gran Reserva in the making. Only 5,000 bottles were produced from 2007, a very cold vintage, when the grapes were harvested the last three days of October, and it snowed the first of November!”
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points[Reviewed Sept 2019] A much smaller production that was aged longer (28 months) in new French oak, the 2007 El Puntido Gran Reserva comes from the same vineyard as the El Puntido but is a parcel selection. Blackcurrants, plums, smoked earth, incense, and violet notes all emerge from this elegant, silky, beautifully polished wine that’s full-bodied, has fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It has power, but this is more about finesse and elegance.”

“You couldn’t go wrong with a case of this”
Bodegas Muga Reserva – Crianza, Rioja DOCa 2015 750ML ($34.95) $23.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“One of the flagship cuvées from this estate that’s produced in every vintage, the 2015 Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo and the rest Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano that spent 24 months in used French and American oak. Blackberries, currants, cigar wrapper, cedar box, and hints of vanilla all flow to a medium-bodied, concentrated, beautiful Rioja that has ripe tannins, beautiful balance, and a great finish. You couldn’t go wrong with a case of this.”
James Suckling 94 points “Complex nose with ripe black cherries, deeply integrated cedary oak, baking spices, dried flowers, leather, fresh tobacco and earthy notes. This is silky and mellow with long, laid-back tannins that deliver ripe dark plum flavors into a spicy and earthy finish. Drink or hold.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 92 points “…This was a very long harvest (similar to 2016). They started at the end of August with the Cava, and they finished at the end of October with very healthy grapes, good yields and very good quality. The wine shows very good ripeness but without any excess. It has incipient complexity, still young and undeveloped but with very good balance between power and elegance, with fine-grained tannins and integrated acidity. This has to be one of the best recent vintages of this popular bottling. There are around one million bottles of it.”
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “Earthy black fruit aromas are warm and ripe. Befitting a reserva from a hot year like 2015, this is big-bodied and flush, with flavors of toasty oak, chocolate and mixed berry fruits. Ripeness is not lost on a finish with mild heat. Drink through 2023.”

Made with sustainability and tradition in mind
Bodegas Ostatu Escobal, Rioja DOCa 2018 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Importer note
“In their continual push for sustainability and regenerative farming, the Saenz de Samaniego siblings have been working towards their organic farming certification. As a start, they have organically certified one of their larger contiguous vineyards, called Escobal, which lies at 550m in Rioja Alavesa with clay-calcareous soils under a layer of sand and gravel, and made a single-vineyard wine from there aged in a large foudre. Made from 100% destemmed tempranillo grapes, fermented with indigenous yeast in temperature-controlled stainless steel. Aged in a large foudre until bottling after one year with minimal sulfur dioxide.”

Expressive, powerful and assertive
Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri ‘Remelluri’ Gran Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2012 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 24 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“The DNA of Remelluri is here. Wild mountain herb character, structured and firm, these tannins are succulent and deeply expressive. Powerful and assertive red plums, wild cherries and roasting herbs with the oak sitting well. Power and balance. Try from 2021.”
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94+ points “A blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano, the 2012 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva represents what they are aiming for with this wine, a classical expression of the place, the quintessence of the vineyards. The select their oldest vineyards and age the wine for a long time, coming back to those early years of a modern Rioja that has now turned into a classic. It has some dusty tannins, with good grip and length. It was bottled in 24,238 bottles after an élevage of 26 months. It has been in bottle since May 2015.”

This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!

“Superb, serious and elegant”
Olivier Rivière Ganko, Rioja DOCa 2016 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 10 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2016 Ganko is a 50/50 blend of Mazuelo and Garnacha matured in a 3,000-liter oak foudre. It has a very low pH and high acidity and is quite tannic and with great complexity, which might make it the most complete, perfumed elegant and at the same time serious and sharp Ganko. It has notes of violets, wild flowers, berries and a spicy twist. The palate shows fine-grained tannins and great freshness with a long, tasty and dry finish. Superb, serious and elegant Rioja fermented with full clusters. 4,000 bottles produced.”

“Powerful, concentrated and juicy”
Javi Revert ‘Sensal’, Valencia 2017 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez – Wine Advocate 91 points
“The red 2017 Sensal is a blend of Garnacha Tintorera and 30% Monastrell, with each variety from one vineyard, but in the future, it will contain Monastrell from one more vineyard and Garnacha that was planted in a new plot. The name is provided by the Garnacha Tintorera plot, a vineyard planted in 1965 on limestone soils. The two varieties fermented separately with some full clusters, then the wines were blended and matured in used French oak barrels for ten months. It feels quite ripe and a bit heady, and it’s powerful, concentrated and juicy, with notes of black olive and black berries. It’s rounder and gentler than the 2016, but it’s a powerful and rustic red, thinking that it has a majority of Garnacha Tintorera. 1,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018.”

Oregon Rising Star

Day Wines’ Flagship Pinot

Brianne Day is one of the Oregon wine industry’s rising stars, building a reputation that lead to a recent James Beard nomination. Sourcing fruit from throughout the Pacific Northwest, she crafts some of the region’s most distinctive and exciting wines. Today we’re thrilled to again feature an incredible deal on Day’s 2016 Momtazi Vineyard Pinot Noir. At $21 off the winery’s price per bottle price (and over $25 off by the case!), this is an opportunity we’re thrilled to still be able to offer.

Day describes their Momtazi bottling as their “flagship Pinot Noir from one of Willamette Valley’s most prized biodynamic vineyards and our most age-worthy wine.” It‘s normally the most expensive Pinot in the Day Wines lineup at $54, but we’re able to offer it for just $33 per bottle and $28.75 per bottle on case purchases.

For those unfamiliar with Momtazi Vineyard, it is one of the Willamette Valley’s most prized biodynamic vineyards. This reputation owes to the fact that no chemicals have been used on the property since it was planted to vine in 1997. And today, the Momtazi family uses strict biodynamic practices. This is a vineyard that many of the state’s most celebrated wineries source from and display the vineyard name proudly on their label.

So take advantage of this killer deal and see what one of Oregon’s up and coming winemakers can do with some of Oregon’s most cherished fruit.

Case-12 Day Wines ‘Momtazi Vineyard ‘ Pinot Noir, McMinnville 2016 750ML ($599.95) $345 special (that’s only $28.75/bottle!)
John Gilman 93 points
“The 2016 Momtazi Vineyard bottling of Pinot Noir from Day Wines is the ripest of these 2016s, as it comes in at fourteen percent octane. It is beautifully black fruity on the nose (as all the examples from Momtazi have been that I have been fortunate enough to taste), offering up scents of black plum, sweet dark berry, black tea, balsam bough, a beautiful base of soil tones, chicory, gentle spice tones and a bit of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a fine core of fruit, great mineral drive and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, tangy and promising finish. While this is the ripest of the 2016 pinots from Brianne Day, it is no less pure or precise and is a great bottle in the making. 2024-2055.”
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 92 points “Limpid red. A highly aromatic bouquet evokes fresh dark berries and baking spices, along with smoky mineral and musky earth overtones. Juicy and broad on the palate, offering alluringly sweet black raspberry, cherry, rose pastille and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily with air. Delivers a suave blend of power and energy and finishes with finely woven tannins and strong, floral-driven persistence.”
Winery Note “Momtazi Vineyard is a certified biodynamic site nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Range, composed primarily of uplifted marine sedimentary loams and silts with alluvial overlays and an underlying base of basalt. One of the revered vineyards in Willamette, this is our cornerstone source for Pinot noir. We are always thrilled to work with this fruit, as it’s some of the most coveted in in the Valley. Many people wish they could get their hands on it, and we’re fortunate that we do. Easily our most intense and deeply fruited Pinot noir, the wine displays hallmark Momtazi notes of black cherry and black raspberry, both on the nose and on the palate. Additional notes of sandalwood spice and forest floor emerge with air, giving a glimpse at the complexity to come. It’s a moody, broody teenager at present, which is no surprise given the vineyard’s reputation for structure. The tannins are suave but sturdy, and the well-integrated acidity holds everything together seamlessly in an enchanting marriage of power and finesse. As flagship wines go, the 2016 Momtazi is a worthy standard-bearer.”

The Iconic Wines of Raúl Pérez
Andy:
There are some producers that are more fun to write about than others, and Raúl Pérez is one of the best. While astonishingly humble, he has had heaps of praise dumped on him for more than 20 years and the descriptions of his talent are always on point. He has been called “the archetype of the intuitive winemaking genius” and mentioned as possibly the best winemaker in the world in the same breath by Decanter Magazine’s Pedro Ballesteros MW. What is it that makes his wine so special, and why should we all be laying these down and enjoying them over the next decade.

Bierzo is where Raúl Pérez runs wild, finding his favorite pocket vineyards in the mountainous region while terrorizing any unfortunate souls that might be on the road while he’s on the move. The old vine plantings Mencia and Trousseau (among a handful of other old-school varietals) draw so much character from each site; elevation, exposure, soil, that Raul is committed to whole clusters going into fermenters so as not to lose any of the untamed aromatics and microbiotic variables that shape the wines. This is why he turns away the praise that is pushed upon him as the “world’s best winemaker” giving the fruit all of the credit.

In their youth the wines are not shy, and as a result it can be difficult to separate the individual qualities of each wine. Each site will in time reveal its true colors; schist vs. sand, warm and lush vs. windy and restrained. While there are a good number of affordable Mencia wines available that can be treated as pop and pour, the Raúl Pérez wines should be treated as cellar selections that will reward a little patience. Consider the wines as you would a love child between Volnay and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and trust that sitting these down for five to ten years will only make the wines shine.

We have a large selection of the wines Pérez makes under his own name, as well as those off of the La Vizcaina property (which are all single vineyards from a single estate). All are excellent, and we’re thrilled to feature them again today at national best prices.

Raúl Pérez ‘Las Gundiñas’ Lomas de Valtuille, Bierzo 2016 750ML ($39.95) $28 Special, 8 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 92 points
“The 2016 La Vizcaína Las Gundiñas comes from a plot with deeper soils, and the wine feels quite immediate and fruit driven. There is a bitter touch in the palate. I’ve seen some ups and downs with this wine, and Raúl Pérez confirmed that the wines are variable, but they tend to deliver in the medium term. It’s not particularly complex, but it drinks well. 4,500 bottles produced.”

Raúl Pérez ‘La Vitoriana’ Lomas de Valtuille, Bierzo 2017 750ML ($39.95) $33 Special, 20 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2017 La Vizcaína La Vitoriana has depth and power, inherent to the vineyard, a cool site that behaves well in a warm year like 2017, but in 2017 I still prefer El Rapolao. The fruit is a little darker and riper without excess (it’s all relative when you compare, and sometimes comparisons are tedious…), as the cooler exposition takes the warmer weather better. It’s textured and serious. 6,300 bottles were filled, as the north-facing exposures like this escaped the frost of the 2017 spring. It as bottled in May 2019.”

Raúl Pérez Ultreia de Paluezas, Bierzo 2016 750ML ($79.95) $59 Special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96 points
“One of the few vineyards in Bierzo where the soils have a significant content of limestone is San Juan de Paluezas, in a different valley looking into Las Médulas goldmines. They produce three barrels of the 2016 Ultreia de Paluezas from this vineyard. This year it had a shorter élevage, only around 12 months, as they saw it was ready and was racked out of the wood. Limestone soils always deliver dry, chalk-like tannins and a special tastiness that often translates in an almost salty feeling. It has more bones than flesh; it’s austere and should develop slowly in bottle. In fact, they are now releasing the 2015, as they feel it benefits from some more time in bottle. I like the austerity here. 850 bottles produced from a small plot with very low yields.”

Raúl Pérez Ultreia El Rapolao Bierzo 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 Special, 12 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 95+ points
“There is a new Ultreia bottling, the 2014 Ultreia El Rapolao, from a vineyard that now sees five or six different bottlings, sourced from their old vineyards that used to go to the Vizcaína bottling. This is really pretty, with intense floral aromas, spices, a touch of earth and something herbal. The palate is medium-bodied with refined tannins, great balance and a tasty, long, sapid, almost salty finish. There were some 600 bottles produced. it was bottled in January 2017. Outstanding.”

Raúl Pérez Ultreia de Valtuille Bierzo 2014 750ML ($69.95) $59 Special, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2014 Ultreia de Valtuille was very open and expressive, impressive too, with notes of freshness, blood orange, red cherries and also flowers (violets, lilies) and an earthy touch. It’s elegant and complex, with very fine tannins and a velvety sensation. As with all the reds, the oak is unnoticeable, perfectly integrated and folded into the wine.”

Raúl Pérez Ultreia de Valtuille Bierzo 2015 750ML ($69.95) $45 Special, 36 bottles in stock now
Josh Raynolds 95 points
“Vivid ruby. An expansive, seductively perfumed bouquet of ripe red/blue fruits, pot-pourri, exotic spices and cola, along with an intense mineral overtone. Concentrated yet vibrant in character, showing superb definition and mineral lift to the sweet raspberry, boysenberry, cola, spicecake and violet pastille flavors. Shows alluring sweetness and powerful thrust on the youthfully tannic finish, which hangs on with outstanding clarity and mineral-driven persistence. (All whole clusters and neutral French oak.) “

Raúl Pérez Ultreia de Valtuille Bierzo 2016 750ML ($79.95) $59 Special, 7 bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“There are only 1,000 bottles of the 2016 Ultreia Valtuille (the new name, as all labels have been simplified and cleaned up, and some of the names have even been shortened). The crop was greatly reduced because of mildew, and the grapes are a lot more concentrated, with more tannin and structure, and they had to do a much longer élevage, up to 24 months in barrique. Despite its concentration and power, it has great freshness and perfume. You don’t find excess tannin, and it seems like the time in barrel has really polished the edges. It’s really outstanding.”

It was not destemmed and spent 27 months in 60% new French oak. Offering a sensational bouquet of blackcurrants, baking chocolate, beef blood, toasted spice, and loamy earth, it builds slowly, with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, beautiful power and elegance, and a great, great finish, it’s another magical wine from this team. 572 cases.”

Glantenay: The Smart Play in Top Volnay

Burgundy from top producers is something we’re always excited to buy—as long as the pricing is right, which is generally the problem. For Bernard & Thierry Glantenay, though, we couldn’t be happier to be in the game. His wines, from old vines in Pommard and Volnay, have a purity and class that immediately mark them as absolutely top tier—and yet his prices are significantly lower than producers like Lafarge or d’Aangerville.

These are stunning wines for which the clock is ticking—there’s no way they’ll be priced this affordably for long. Once a producer starts to get widespread notice these wines are going to skyrocket in pricing and so let’s take a moment to appreciate that you can currently buy Glantenay’s Bourgogne for nearly half the price of d’Angerville, or his Santenots for a third of Arnaud Ente’s!

His premier cru Volnays are standout values as well—still under $100, but from some of the top terroirs in the village (and from extremely old vines as well). This is d’Angerville/Lafarge/Lafon level stuff for a third to half as much. As William Kelley put it in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, “I was compelled to return a week later to verify that I hadn’t been imagining things, and that so serious a producer could really be so little known.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy 2015 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 10 bottles in stock now

“Thierry Glantenay’s 2015 Bourgogne Rouge is lovely, wafting from the glass with notes of smoky red cherry, cocoa and raspberries. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and delicious, with a succulent core of fruit, light structuring tannins and juicy acids. This will deliver great pleasure for the best part of a decade.” –Wine Advocate
Importer note: 30 year old vines grown in deep clay soil. Thierry Glantenay has taken over at his family domaine and is now producing exquisite, ethereal Volnay and full, powerful Pommard from many of the best terroirs. They farm their own vines and make their own wines ensuring the best available quality. Across the board these wines are precise, focused and reflective of their underlying terroir, with great sappiness and depth in the mid-palates, coupled with brilliant structural integrity that makes them, to me, amongst the finest wines made in the southern half of Burgundy.

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Bourgogne Rouge, Burgundy 2017 750ML ($41.95) $33 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 87-89 points
“The 2017 Bourgogne Pinot Noir has a clean raspberry and blackberry scented bouquet (there is a tincture of the children’s drink Ribena here!) The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannin, fine acidity, fresh and lively with good energy towards the finish. Recommended.”
William Kelley, Wine Advocate “Glantenay’s 2017 Bourgogne Rouge is very persuasive, bursting with aromas of cassis, ripe red berries and spices. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, satiny and succulent, with a light framing of structuring tannins and a generous core of fruit. It will deliver great pleasure on release.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Volnay, Côte de Beaune 2017 750ML ($67.95) $54.50 special, 36 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 90-92 points
“The 2017 Volnay Village comes from five parcels (including two small parcels of Premier Cru). It has a vibrant black cherry, bilberry scented bouquet with impressive vigour and neatly integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with light, supple tannin. Vibrant black cherries and raspberry, just a touch of salinity lending edginess towards the finish. Very fine.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 89-91 points “As usual, the 2017 Volnay Village includes two small premier cru parcels that Glantenay doesn’t wish to vinify separately, and it’s shaping up very nicely, offering up a fragrant nose of sweet cherries and berries, violets and orange rind. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, satiny and supple, with an ample core of sweet fruit and a fine-grained, elegantly chalky finish.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Les Brouillards, Volnay Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($99.95) $79 special, 22 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 90-92 points
“The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards exhibits beautiful nose notes of orange rind, wild berries, cassis and rose petals. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a lavishly textural attack, melting tannins and a succulent core of fruit, concluding with a long finish. In 2016, this cuvée was so small that Glantenay included it in his Volnay AOC, but happily, 2017 marks its return to the range.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Clos des Chênes, Volnay Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($114.95) $89 special, 29 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 92-94 points
“The 2017 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru, which contains around 30% whole bunch fruit from the older vines in Glantenay’s parcel, has a very perfumed bouquet with wilted iris and violet petals permeating the dark cherry and boysenberry fruit. The Clos des Chênes has a hint of fig with further aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth but very good substance and a silky smooth finish that is real class on the finish. There is actually less Clos des Chênes in 2017 than in 2016 due to the sheer concentration – try to grab a bottle if you can because this is very impressive.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes wafts from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries, citrus peel, rich soil and warm spices, subtly framed by creamy new oak. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, with the most depth, dimension and amplitude of any wine in the cellar, its juicy core of fruit entirely cloaking is fine structuring tannins. One of the best renditions of this vineyard I tasted in 2017, it’s a very impressive wine.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Les Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2014 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Winery note
[Translated] From 55-65 year old vines on clay-limestone and loamy soils. Appreciated for its finesse, the Volnay Santenots is considered the most feminine wine of the Côte de Beaune. Bright ruby, its aromas are delicate and complex: violet, currant, cherry, spices, game, and prune. The freshness, the texture and the tannins are harmoniously balanced to give a charming, suave and fleshy wine, endowed with a beautiful energy.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Les Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2015 750ML ($99.95) $89 special, 2 bottles in stock now
Neal Martin-Vinous 93 points
“The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru shows a lot of reduction on the nose that makes the fruit and terroir difficult to read at the moment. The palate probably indicates the potential more than the aromatics, offering brambly red and black fruit, a sprinkle of white pepper and hints of dried orange peel toward the refined, persistent finish. This certainly requires time in bottle but the potential is here. Patience, please. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.”

Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay Les Santenots, Volnay Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($109.95) $85 special, 22 bottles in stock now
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The 2017 Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots is showing very well from bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, wild berries, dark chocolate and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, it’s supple and lively, framed by powdery tannins. This has developed nicely and will offer a broad drinking window.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 90-92 points “The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru has more mineral expression and just a tad less VA than the Brouillards by comparison. The palate is well balanced with succulent tannin, juicy black fruit with hints of blueberry and cassis that dovetail into a finely structured, almost flinty finish. This has very good potential.”
