Domaine Rollin’s Secret-Star White Burgundy
Domaine Rollin Pere et Fils Sous Fretille, Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($79.95) $66 special
Rosenthal Note “This vineyard is a relatively recent acquisition by the Rollin family (the 2000 vintage was the first to issue from the domaine) but it is a parcel of old vines in one of the elite lieu-dits of the village. The vineyard is situated on slopes overlooking the village and is just around the corner from Corton Charlemagne. A powerful wine that benefits from several years of bottle age … only 35 cases per annum are allocated to us for the USA.”
Domaine Rollin Pere et Fils Les Cloux, Pernand-Vergelesses 2017 750ML ($59.95) $49 special
Rosenthal Note “‘Les Cloux’ is a well-situated lieu-dit on the north side of the hill of Corton, adjacent to the premier cru ‘Sous Fretille’. It faces southeast on a high, steep part of the hillside, and a general lack of any direct breeze there encourages notable ripeness. The wine possesses a lower-pitched, deeper nose than the basic Pernand-Vergelesses above, but with an equivalent limestone intensity more solid in its character than powdered. The palate is richer and thicker as well, but suffused with the alert acidity typical of the Rollin style. Only 20% of the oak employed during the elevage is new.”
Domaine Rollin Pere et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc, Cote de Beaune 2017 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Rosenthal Note “A consistently formidable wine that is sourced from four separate vineyard sites within the boundaries of Pernand. The average age of the vines (as of 2011) is approximately 35 years. A classic representation of the “taste” of Pernand with its intense minerality, hints of fennel and honey and broad-shouldered appearance. Aged on its lees for twelve months and bottled without filtration, it is particularly ageworthy. We buy five barrels per year (1500 bottles) for the US market.”

Oregon Value Plays
Looking for value? We’ve got two Evening Land wines whose exact (vineyard) origins are unknown, but which represent a fantastic value play. Bottled to be the house Pinot Noir and house Chardonnay for an upscale restaurant group by Evening Land, the famed Willamette producer, the wines are only available to you because the COVID crisis caused the restaurant to default on its commitment to the winery.
What does that mean? It means two wines that were produced and priced to be exceptional glass pours are now available to you at prices that are hard to believe, given their origins. While the winery (and restaurant) are keeping mum about where exactly the fruit for these was sourced, they live up to the expectations we have for an Evening Land wine, especially for the price. They’re made in a more forward, drink-now style than ELV’s other more cellar-oriented releases, so perfect for a quarantine stockpile.
In Stock Now:
Evening Land “Brasserie 19” Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2016 750ML ($39.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Evening Land “Brasserie 19” Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2016 750ML ($419.95) $219 special (that’s only $18.25/bottle!)
Evening Land “Brasserie 19” Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Case-12 Evening Land “Brasserie 19” Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2014 750ML ($419.95) $249 special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)
We initially offered the 2016 Goodfellow Willamette Valley (Restaurant Edition) just over a month
ago and it’s gone on to smash Vinopolis sales records—for good reason. It’s a delicious, drink-now version of one of the best values out there. We have just a few cases of it left, so we cajoled Marcus Goodfellow into letting us sell you some of the 2017 edition—a more than worthy follow up that’s sure to delight.
Like the previous edition, this is a bottling that Marcus put together to be a glass-pour wine for local restaurants. It doesn’t see out of state distribution and you can’t buy it at the winery—it’s a bit softer than the “standard” WV, but drinks like a champ. What sets the ’17 version apart is the bright, aromatic profile that’s made 2017 a favorite among local winemakers. The vintage favors finesse and elegance, but with real drive and substance backing it up. It’s definitely a more red-fruited, linear version than the 2016, but is qualitatively its equal.
Like the 2016, this is one of the most delicious, complete bottles of WV Pinot we’ve tasted for the price. As you’d expect of a wine blended for glass pouring, this is fantastic out of the gate, no need to age this one. We’re sure it’ll improve over the next 5ish years, but if you’re looking for a Willamette wine to keep you company during a self-quarantine, you should pop (many) of them now.
We’re able to offer it to you for a truly stunning price—under $20 a bottle, hard to believe for a wine of this quantity. If you’re willing to commit to a half or a full case (and why wouldn’t you?) the price gets truly nuts: $16.50/btl or just $15.75 respectively.
In Stock Now:
Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2017 750ML ($21.95) $18 special
Case-6 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2017 750ML ($129.95) $99 special (that’s only $16.50/bottle!)
Case-12 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2017 750ML ($219.95) $189 special (that’s only $15.75/bottle!)
VinopolNote: We can’t get enough of Marcus Goodfellow’s Willamette Valley Pinots. With restaurants only offering takeout for the foreseeable future, Marcus is letting us share his by-the-glass Pinot with you. It’s an insane value!
“For $25, it’s probably the bargain of the vintage” – Neal Martin
Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2014 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Winery-cellared release!
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91 points “Brilliant red. High-pitched raspberry and rose scents are complemented by hints of anise and allspice. Shows very good energy and depth to the red berry and floral pastille flavors, which are given lift by a spine of juicy acidity. Closes smooth, spicy and very long; fine-grained tannins frame the juicy, appealingly sweet red fruit. This wine delivers outstanding value and shows impressive nerve for a warm vintage.”
Neal Martin-Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2014 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills is a blend of Maresh, Juliard, Weber, Gehrts and Folie Hill vineyards. It has a fresh and vibrant bouquet with red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, touches of blood orange with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin – a mixture here of red and black fruit, meaty in style with a Pommard-like finish that lingers in the mouth. For $25, it’s probably the bargain of the vintage.”
A fantastic bottle of white, with bright minerality and a citrus zestiness.
Vincent Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($21.95) $19 special
Winery note “This year’s Blanc shows a bit more richness than ’17, more like the ’16 which was a favorite. Grapes here are now coming from a small plot I lease at Zenith Vineyard in the Eola Hills, vines from the 1990s. As usual, this wine is made just like Chardonnay, naturally fermented in older French oak, on the lees for nearly a year and bottled unfiltered. Bright color, mineral and apple aromas, all variety of apples and citrus flavors, creamy from the lees aging, then fantastic acidity to keep your mouth watering. So good.”
Gamay is one of the rising star grapes of the W.V. and Love & Squalor makes a favorite.
Love & Squalor Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2018 750ML ($27.95) $24 special
Winery note “In 2014 we added Gamay noir to our line up and it has proven to be a wonderful addition to our Love & Squalor line up! While it is not widely planted in the Willamette Valley, Gamay noir seems the perfect candidate. It is a cousin of Pinot noir and is found planted alongside it in Burgundy, our touchstone region. There are older plantings of Gamay in Oregon dating to 1987, and there have been additional plantings in every decade since. It is currently finding wider popularity among growers and winemakers, and we expect there will be a healthy supply of Gamay noir grapes in the near future.”

Domaine Rollin’s Secret-Star White Burgundy
Domaine Rollin remains a bit of an open secret in Burgundy—great producer, imported by one of the best palates out there (Rosenthal), but resolutely not-talked about as much as they should be. From a quick survey of some great Burgundy palates, it seems like the sharpest buyers know and buy these wines, but no one is willing to tell their friends—the prices are still too reasonable to let the secret out.
Well, sorry, but we’re going to be the ones to blab about one of the best under-the-radar Burgundy domains out there. Rollin is based in Pernand-Vergelesses, a village whose challenging spelling and pronunciation has kept it from the stardom it deserves. They make both red and white Pernand, which shares something in common with neighboring Aloxe-Corton as well as some of the fruit and structure of Beaune.
Their best values might be their whites, though, which have lots in common with Corton-Charlemagne in profile and structure, at prices that are incredibly reasonable for their quality. There’s been a lot of chatter online recently about the value that their white Pernand offers, and justly so—these are some of the last great secrets in white Burgs. The 2017’s just arrived and you’d be a smart buyer to lock these down now.
Just Arrived, In Stock Now
Domaine Rollin Pere et Fils Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2017 750ML ($179.95) $149 special
Rosenthal Note “The Rollin family for many years has exploited two separate parcels totaling about one-half hectare within the appellation of Corton Charlemagne. One parcel is on the Aloxe-Corton side within “Le Charlemagne” and the other piece is on the Pernand side of the hill known as “En Charlemagne”. The grapes from each parcel are harvested and vinified separately and are then assembled prior to bottling (after more or less fifteen months of elevage). From our personal perspective, the Corton Charlemagne from Rollin is one of the finest white wines in our portfolio, a true Grand Cru. We purchase two barrels a year … and a small amount of magnums are drawn for us annually.”

Arnaldo Caprai’s Powerhouse Sagrantino
Arnaldo Caprai is one of the stars of Italian wine. One of the two faces of Montefalco (along with Paolo Bea), their wines are rich, lush bottlings that manage to tame Sagrantino’s tannins more than most. Decidedly modern in approach, this is an estate devoted to turning Umbria’s wealth of powerful, if rustic, red grapes into bottles of wine that are silky, bold and delicious straight out of the gate. We’ve received our allocation of their coveted Collepiano—a 100% Sagrantino bottling that symbolizes the growing area that Caprai is based out of. It’s become something of a flagship for the winery and we just received the stellar 2015 version—one of the best yet.
In Stock Now:
Arnaldo-Caprai Collepiano, Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG 2015 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino Collepiano benefits from more stringent fruit selection. “We are limited to only the best fruit for this wine, and we changed the way we pick with multiple harvests,” says Marco Caprai. This warm and sunny vintage has shaped a generous and inviting wine that is opulent, bold and rich all at once. This wine offers ample power, yet it’s not as bruising as past vintages I remember. The 2015 vintage flaunts its curvy physique.”

Chateau de Rouanne, Vinsobres 2018 750ML ($31.95) Was $28, Now $24 Subscriber Special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Decanter 90 points “There’s some interest here – it’s just a touch rustic perhaps from the ample use of stems, the tannins are a little fibrous and grainy. A good intensity of fruit however, bright, juicy and fresh. Tannins are pretty fierce, so give it a year or two to settle. There’s a whiff of Provençale herbs and oregano with a saline finish. Alcohol is high, but overall the effect is balanced. A solid start. In organic conversion, old vines on limestone marls. The first vintage since this estate was bought by Louis Barruol of Château de Saint-Cosme.”
Jeb Dunnuck 90 points “The 2018 Vinsobres comes from an estate owned by Louis Barruol (of Château Saint Cosme in Gigondas) and checks in as a blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, all from a single parcel just outside the village of Vinsobres. Revealing a deep purple, translucent hue as well as lots of mulberry and black raspberry fruit interwoven with notes of ground pepper, violets, and game, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, a rounded, supple, elegant texture, notable purity, and outstanding length. Seeming to have one foot in the Northern Rhône with its gamey, violet characteristics and one foot in the south with its richness and opulence on the palate, it’s a terrific, noteworthy Vinsobres to enjoy over the coming 4-6 years.”

Fat, sweet and deep, with good spicy lift to the very ripe flavors of plum, blueberry, dark chocolate and spices. A very rich, tactile Syrah with sexy sweetness but plenty of ripe, dusty tannins to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Ultimately richer than the Union Gap Syrah but also more tannic.”

Rose of the Day
A Lighter Take from Tavel
La Belle Etoile is (legendary Tavel producer) Chateau de Manissy’s lighter, more delicate bottling and a longtime shop favorite as well. Based around Cinsault’s light freshness, this is a delicately fruity wine with a really clean, refreshing profile. We also have their fantastic Tavel in stock, but for a more classically delicate Provence style rose at this price, its tough to beat.

Chateau de Manissy ‘La Belle Etoile’ Rose, Rhone 2019 750ML ($17.95) $14 special
Importer note “Cinsault, Syrah and Grenache from clay & limestone soil. Crushed stone, pressed flowers and white cherries. Medium body with a long finish… Covering an area of 1.5ha, this site is bathed by the sun and swept by the mistral on a flat plain that rich in limestone with a clay subsoil. Entirely hand-harvested organic grapes that have a cold maceration before being pressed. Low temperature fermentation with indigenous yeasts, which allow the yeast to develop its fruit flavors. Aged in stainless steel tank. Given the name “beautiful star” by the Manissy Brotherhood’s missionary preist, the grapes originate from organically certified vineyards owned by wine-maker Florian André’s mother.”

Castello dei Rampolla’s Tuscan Knockouts
Castello dei Rampolla is one of our go-to estates for big, bold wines from Chianti. Whether their flagship Chianti Classico or their top-tier “Sammarco” (today’s feature), the wines deliver impressive complexity, depth and power at prices that make them must-have for lovers of Bordeaux, Brunello and everything in between.
Castello dei Rampolla is blessed with some of the best holdings in Panzano’s Conca d’Oro—a warm sub-region of Chianti that allows for naturally powerful wines. They combine that privileged site with some of the more meticulous biodynamic farming in the region, all in the service of wines with depth, texture and complexity.
The Sammarco is perhaps their crown jewel—a Bordeaux inspired blend that uses a tiny dollop of Sangiovese to bring Cabernet and Merlot to a new plane. The 2015 version is the powerhouse you’d expect, with creamy dark fruit and more than a hint of cocoa. It arrives this Fall and we’re making our limited allocation available now.
Arriving ETA Fall 2020:
Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($99.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2015 750ML ($549.95) $389 pre-arrival special (that’s only $64.83/bottle!)
Wine Enthusiast 98 points “Sunbaked earth, mature black-plum, fragrant blue-flower and leather aromas mingle with balsamic whiffs of camphor on this full-bodied, delicious red. Made with 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Sangiovese, the creamy palate is earthy and full of flavor, boasting juicy blackberry, raspberry, dried mint, cocoa and licorice. Taut velvety tannins provide plenty of support and finesse. Drink through 2035.”
James Suckling 98 points “I love the meatiness to this wine, but also the purity of fruit; think charcuterie, prosciutto, bay leaf, capsicum, blueberries, blackcurrants and crushed stones. You just can’t get over the way this manages to deliver a powerful, muscular package with stunning finesse and poise. The tapestry of intricate texture and detail is wrought in a flashy but sincere and heartwarming style. The balance takes your breath away. Best ever from here. Impossible to resist now, but better from 2025.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2015 Sammarco (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese) shines the brightest spotlight onto the Cabernet Sauvignon element, and you can immediately make out the distinctive sharpness and structure of that variety. The bouquet offers notes of black fruit, toasted spice and grilled herb, along with wild flower, terracotta and tilled earth. There is some spice on the close, and the tannins do leave their mark with youthful astringency. Give the wine some time in the cellar, and one day it will be fantastic with a tagliatelle and porcini.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2015 Sammarco is a wine of exquisite and total finesse. Understated and nuanced, as few wines are in 2015, Sammarco is sublime. Wild flowers, cedar, spice, leather and mint give the 2015 striking aromatic dimension. On the palate, the 2015 is subtle and classy. In 2015, the Merlot crop was a bit higher than normal as newer plantings entered production, and that is reflected in the blend here as well. Because of that, the 2015 is an unusually open, forthcoming Sammarco. In fact, I can’t remember tasting a young Sammarco with this much early appeal. I can’t wait to see how it ages. The 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Sangiovese, with the Cabernet and Merlot aged in concrete and tonneaux, and the Sangiovese exclusively in cask.”

Case-12 Castello dei Rampolla Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany 2017 750ML ($449.95) $315 special (that’s only $26.25/bottle!)
Wine Enthusiast 94 points “Plum, fragrant blue flower, leather and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you’ll find on this fragrant, delicious wine. It’s chewy and enveloping but also boasts a weightless elegance, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, cranberry compote, licorice and tobacco while velvety fine-grained tannins offer polished support. Drink through 2023.”
James Suckling 93 points “The nose of this Chianti Classico is unique, with abundant fresh rose petals, orange zest and lemon peel. Medium-bodied and very lithe yet firm on the palate. Elegant and very taut and tangy on the finish. So well done in a challenging vintage. Drink now.”
Antonio Galloni 91 points “Rampolla’s 2017 Chianti Classico is a powerful, dense wine that shows all of the natural richness of the year. Super-ripe dark cherry, spice, licorice, new leather and lavender give the 2017 its decidedly flamboyant personality. I would prefer to give the 2017 a few years in bottle, but there is plenty to look forward to. Today, the Chianti Classico is youthfully exuberant and full of promise. Sadly, production is down by 50% because of frost in May, hail in August and then dehydration on the vine later that month.”

Snowden
Great names in California have earned their status for a reason—years, often decades, of producing excellent wine result in well-earned reputations. Case in point? Snowden’s Cabernet Sauvignons—one of the benchmarks for quality to price ratios in Napa.
Snowden is one of the great names in Napa Cabernet, making wines that combine classical power with freshness and intricate fruit. Their two Cabs are both excellent and excellent values—it’s rare to find a bottle under $100 that can compete with the “Brothers” bottling and under $50 wines that are close to the Ranch’s quality are nonexistent. These are classic bottlings and showcase what’s been beloved about Napa for generations.

Antonio Galloni 96+ points “The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Brothers is the best wine I have tasted from Diana Snowden-Seysses. Rich, explosive and savory, the 2016 dazzles with intensity in all of its dimensions. Graphite, smoke, savory herbs and spice notes wrap around a core of dark fruit in a vertical, towering Cabernet Sauvignon that captures all the vintage has to offer.”
Wine Spectator 94 points “Offers a tasty core of plum and blackberry fruit, backed by lively anise and apple wood notes. Restrained overall, with an alluring freshness and a subtle charcoal hint lingering deftly at the end. Drink now through 2032. 639 cases made.”

Antonio Galloni 93 points “Snowden’s 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon The Ranch is gorgeous. Dark, powerful and beautifully structured, the 2016 Ranch is a huge overachiever. In 2016, the Ranch is a wine of real power, gravitas and character. Black cherry, plum, lavender and savory herbs all develop in the glass, but it is the wine’s persistence and overall balance that stands out in this deeply flavorful, classically built Cabernet from Snowden. Best of all, the 2016 is a superb wine for the money.”

Hundred Suns
On Sale Now / Wines Arrive Friday, June 26th
Grant Coulter is one of the hottest names in the Willamette Valley. The former assistant winemaker at Beaux Freres (under tutelage of the legendary Mike Etzel), Grant’s made a name for himself as the winemaker of rising star Flaneur, as well as with his own label: Hundred Suns.
Named for the number of days between flowering and harvest, the Hundred Suns Pinots drink like a love letter to the Willamette Valley. We recently tasted through the set of 2018 single-vineyard wines and were blown away. You can taste the Beaux Freres-inspired style, but these are wines that are uniquely Grant, from an assortment of some of the most interesting vineyards in the Willamette Valley.
Shea needs no introduction among Willamette aficionados—a grand cru of a vineyard in Yamhill Carlton. The Hundred Suns edition is spectacular, full of dark, plummy fruit and the spices that the site is known for. Bednarik is a vineyard that flies under the radar a bit more, but Ken Wright fans from the 90’s know the site well. This version is more compact than the Shea, with beautiful, crunchy structure allied to a beguiling mixture of black cherry fruit and savory overtones. It’s a cool vineyard and that shows in the brightness on the finish, though this wine still shows great power. Finally, there’s Breaker, their home vineyard, planted in 1972 (and own rooted!) located in the Eola-Amity Hills. Of the three wines, this combines elements of the previous two, with dark, rich fruits but plenty of structure and Eola-Hills power.
Anyone who’s loved the Beaux Freres or Flaneur wines in the past needs to be paying attention to what Grant is doing at Hundred Suns. His project represents one of the most exciting new labels in the Willamette Valley and Pinot lovers ought to buy in now, before they become hard to find. We’ve got all three vineyards arriving on the 26th and you can stock up now.

James Suckling 94 points “Rich aromas of crushed violets and blueberries with a deeply spicy edge, as well as cocoa powder, dark chocolate and darker cherries, berries and plums. There’s striking purity here with more red fruit on the palate. Very plush, concentrated and balanced. Drink or hold.”

James Suckling 95 points “This has a very fresh, attractive nose with roses and violets, as well as boysenberries, red cherries and a savory, stony edge. Some sappy nuances, too. The palate is very succulent and has strikingly fresh red berries and cherries, underscored with vibrant acidity and a very uplifting, dynamic finish. A richer vintage, made in a fresher style, works very well here. Drink or hold.”
