The Iconic Hubert Lignier’s 2017’s
A Treasure Trove of Library Ayoub
Ayoub has established itself as a go-to for customers looking for big, rich, silky Pinot Noir. These are full throttle wines, as Oregon Pinot goes, and their small quantities mean that they have become coveted bottles to have in the cellar. As you might expect, they have one of the most devoted followings in the state, with a rabid wine club and high demand for the (limited) wines we get.
Well, we’ve found something for all you (many) Ayoub fans out there—a trove of back vintage Pinot Noir (plus a few random bottles of Chard/Blanc de Noir) that’s sure to cause a lot of smiling and excitement. From more of the previously-sold-out 2017’s (an awesome year for Ayoub) to a pile of the legendary ’14’/’15’/’16 trifecta and with a few wines going back to 2010 for good measure, this is a collection that’s tough to top outside Mo’s own cellar.
If there’s a catch, it’s that most of these wines exist in very small quantities—we’re talking two to eight bottles, tops. You can view the entire list on our webstore (there are 37 total bottlings available!) but we’ve taken the liberty of putting a few below, to give you an idea of what’s available.

Gerard Boulay: Master of Sancerre
“Given the crystalline purity of his Sauvignon Blancs, he has become one of my favorite producers of the central Loire. If you want to know what true Sancerre tastes like, try one of his single-vineyard bottlings. It does not come any better!” – Joel Payne, Vinous
Gerard Boulay makes some of the best white wines in France from his vineyards in Chavignol. Chavignol is the true beating heart of Sancerre and the host of all the best names in the region (Vatan, the Cotats, Boulay, etc.) and Boulay owns some of best located sites in some of the best vineyards in the town. From his parcel in La Grande Cote to Monts Damnes to the famed Clos Beaujeu, all of his wines ring with terroir and the unique minerality that’s inherent to Chavignol.
For the prices that Boulay charges, these are some of the most electric and profound whites in all of France. While low-tier Sancerre always seems overpriced, the top producers in the region make extraordinary wines that seem to be completely undervalued (with the obvious exception of Vatan). 2018 was a fantastic year in the Loire and Boulay made some of his best bottles in his career. We have a few cases of each of the cru wines arriving Friday and these should disappear quickly, so they’re worth jumping on now.
Arriving ETA June 12th:
Gerard Boulay Sancerre Chavignol, Loire 2019 750ML ($39.95) $33 pre-arrival special
Importer note “Blend of young vine parcels on kimmeridgian slopes in the village of Chavignol.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Comtesse, Loire 2018 750ML ($79.95) $66 pre-arrival special
Importer Note “From 50-75 year old vines located in the sweet spot of the Mont Damnés vineyard (bottom of the slope, near Clos La Neore of Vatan), this is often the most powerful wine from Boulay’s lineup. Vintage 2005 was the inaugural release.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre La Cote, Loire 2018 750ML ($74.95) $56.50 pre-arrival special
Importer Note “Boulay’s parcel in “La Grande Côte,” which is partially owned and partically rented, is one of three designated Crus of Chavignol and is reputed for producing wines of incredible precision. Vintage 2010 was the inaugural release. Overall, Gerard Boulay’s “terre blanche” vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and soil-inflected Sauvignon Blancs in the Loire, with a delineation and minerality often reminiscent of a top Chablis. Boulay is certainly among the top examples of the appellation, including Boulay’s neighbors (Cotat Bros., Vatan). These are gorgeous, highly complex wines that are a clear step above “regular” Sancerre, and can age easily for 10-20 years or more. In fact, we have had them all the way back to the 1959 which was magnificent! They confirm Boulay’s place in the top ranks of Loire Valley vignerons. (referred to by the Cotat brothers as La Grande Cote)”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Clos de Beaujeu, Loire 2018 750ML ($69.95) $51.90 pre-arrival special
Importer Note “One of Chavignol’s most historic vineyards, Boulay’s parcel lies within the original Clos of the vineyard, established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages. The walls of the Clos are no longer standing as they were originally built from clay and hay, and did not withstand the test of time. Boulay farms a 0.75 hectares plot of 30- to 60-year old vins where the soils are pebbly, lime-rich and strewn with fossils. Along with the 60% gradient for much of the vineyard, the rocky soils make this parcel very difficult to farm. Clos de Beaujeu is the source of some of Boulay’s deepest, most structured wines and savory, spicy examples of Chavignol that are built to last.”

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Les Monts Damnes, Loire 2018 750ML ($69.95) $51.90 pre-arrival special
Importer Note “Boulay began farming the steeply sloped Mont Damnés vineyard in 1982. His plot has an average vine age of 45 years. Mont Damnés’ reflective soils and south-facing exposition make it one of Chavignol’s warmest sites. Overall, Gerard Boulay’s “terre blanche” vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and soil-inflected Sauvignon Blancs in the Loire, with a delineation and minerality often reminiscent of a top Chablis. A Stellar Super Tuscan Value
We love having a go-to Super Tuscan under $15 in house and the impending arrival of Tenuta Lunelli’s Aliotto is going to fill a void that the Il Poggione Rosso left when it sold out in April. This is a fantastic value, with its 60% Sangiovese complemented by a Cab/Merlot blend that provides fruit and structure. It’s already selling briskly, so don’t hesitate.
Arriving Friday:
Tenute Lunelli Podernovo Aliotto Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($21.95) $14 pre-arrival special
Case-6 Tenute Lunelli Podernovo Aliotto Toscana IGT, Tuscany 2014 750ML ($119.95) $79 pre-arrival special (that’s only $13.17/bottle!)
James Suckling 92 points “This has plenty of classic red cherries and herb character on the nose before following through to a medium- to full-bodied palate that is extremely fresh and elegant. Drink-me style. Drink now.”

Two Deals from Owen Roe
Whenever we have the chance to buy properly aged, single-vineyard Washington Syrah from top producers, we jump on it. When we can offer it to you at a huge discount? Well, these sorts of opportunities are rare and we act accordingly. Today’s offer of the 2013 Owen Roe Chapel Block is a stunner in that regard; it’s seven-years old Syrah at up to $20 off what we originally offered it at four years ago.
We first sold the 2013 Owen Roe Chapel Block Syrah four years ago for $49 per bottle—and Suzanne wrote this note:
“This new vintage of the Chapel Block Syrah from the Red Willow vineyard shows poise and balance. There are overtones of dark chocolate and dark roast coffee layered with sweet spices and a hint of new leather on the finish. Unabashedly New World, the palate offers ripe berry and floral notes with a lingering chocolate taste. It has an excellent grippy texture to keep the rich body in check. I would cellar for at least 2-3 years before opening, though ideally this baby could go for 7-10.”
Well, here we are—nicely four years after that tasting note and with a price that would have been unthinkable then. The 2013 Owen Roe Chapel Block is just $33 per bottle—or $29.92 on a case purchase. This is a fantastic wine in a great point in its development and you’d do well to stick a case in your drinking queue.

Owen Roe Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah, Yakima Valley 2013 750ML ($59.95) $33 special
Case-12 Owen Roe Red Willow Vineyard Chapel Block Syrah, Yakima Valley 2013 750ML ($719.95) $359 special (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 92 points “Bright medium ruby. Musky, earthy aromas of raspberry, roasted strawberry, smoked meat and charred oak. Fat, sweet and deep, with good spicy lift to the very ripe flavors of plum, blueberry, dark chocolate and spices. A very rich, tactile Syrah with sexy sweetness but plenty of ripe, dusty tannins to support a graceful evolution in bottle. Ultimately richer than the Union Gap Syrah but also more tannic.”

A Kelley Fox Maresh Vineyard Vertical
Kelley Fox makes some of the prettiest and most captivating wines in all of the Willamette Valley—fresh and delicate with a palate-pleasing intricacy. Her hands-on approach to farming and use of whole-cluster fermentations mean that the wines have a dialectic of fresh and savoriness coupled with an energy that has vaulted her into the stratosphere of Willamette Valley producers.
The vineyard that she’s best known for is Maresh—a top site in the Dundee Hills. We’ve secured a few top back vintages of her “Maresh Vineyard” Pinot Noir (2014 and 2015, to be exact) in limited quantities and are excited to offer them alongside some of her more contemporary releases.
These are true Willamette treasures: hard to find and worth the hunt.
“Anyone who avers that New World Pinot cannot match Burgundy for finesse and complexity has clearly never tried anything from this small, impressively consistent producer. Kelley Fox cut her winemaking teeth at Eyrie (and that influence shows very clearly in the wines she produces under her own name), followed by a 10-year stint (2005 to 2015) as winemaker at Scott Paul. She launched her own winery in 2007 and now produces around 2,000 cases a year of lithe, mineral-driven and strikingly pure Pinots from two of the Willamette Valley’s most highly regarded and meticulously farmed vineyards, Maresh and Momtazi. Native yeasts are used for all of the wines, and anywhere from a third to three-quarters whole clusters have been used since the beginning, but as of the 2015 vintage Fox will be using all whole bunches. She started out by using about one-third new oak for her first three vintages, used a bit for 2010 and 2011 and now uses none at all because she wants her wines “to be as pure and unadorned as possible, and oak can get in the way.” As approachable as Fox’s wines are soon after release, they have the balance to age and, as a bonus, they deliver exceptional value for their quality.” – Josh Raynolds, Vinous (12/2016)

Kelley Fox Wines Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2015 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s Note “The Maresh 2015 is a selection of 6 barrels of my Long Rows (planted in 1970) and 2 barrels of my Old Block (planted in 1970). I do much of the farming of the canopy in these blocks personally each year (along with Block 8, which is entirely in the Mirabai). All of my wines in 2015 were 100% whole cluster. The colour is more blue-hued and a slightly deeper light red than the Mirabai. It is multifaceted and transparent like a well-cut gem. The nose has a different kind of minerality than the Mirabai, and has that lovely Maresh fruit with a faint hint of healing herbs and a certain wide-ranging purity. It is very different from the Mirabai. If the Mirabai has high energy and hummingbird wings, this wine has a sweeping, soaring energy and the feeling of silent, vast movement like in a dream of flight. While the Maresh is utterly clear in its transmission, it also has impenetrable depth. The texture is the classic silk of the Red Hills of Dundee and more specifically, of Maresh, and one can feel the airy, silky drape almost in folds.”
Kelley Fox Wines Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2018 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 11 bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s note “The Maresh bottling is one I feel very deeply bonded with each year, and more so with each vintage. These vines planted on their own roots in 1970 in both the Long Rows and my half of the Old Block I have worked in since 2008. This time spent each year working in these blocks has changed me. I have the utmost love and respect for these vines, and the 2018 from them is something to behold. The Maresh 2018 is a medium, youthful and noble blue-red that is full of light and gorgeous transparency. It is certainly deeper in colour than my 2017. It’s my Maresh. Of course the nose is full of Hood strawberries warmed in the sun with the freshness of rain and the Pacific Ocean in the spring air, along with spices and other delicious notes that are difficult to articulate. The texture and length are also classic Maresh: silky and drapey without heaviness and more of the wind for its heft. As I write these notes, I find that this bottling is more coiled than the Red Barn Blocks 2018. It is both haunting and elusive.”

Kelley Fox Wines Maresh Vineyard Red Barn Block Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills 2018 750ML ($119.95) $95 special, 9 bottles in stock now
Winemaker’s note “2018 is my last bottling of the Red Barn Blocks. I am deeply thankful for the gift of being able to produce wines from these blocks over the years. To be released later, most likely in early 2020, is the Maresh Vineyard Royal Ann Block, and I’ll write about that when the time comes. I’ll say now that I couldn’t be more happy about that block and the 2018. I worked with that block for ten years as the winemaker for Scott Paul Wines. The 2018 Red Barn Blocks is almost identical in appearance to the Maresh 2018, except it is slightly deeper. It, too, has the classic Maresh nose of Hood strawberries and some spice (perhaps from the 50% whole cluster). But the nose is a bit more open and has the freshness that evokes the ozone-filled air after a spring thunderstorm. The mouth is juicy and mouth-watering, This wine has splendour, and is a real beauty.”
Also Available from Kelley Fox:
Kelley Fox Wines Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Blanc, Willamette Valley 2019 750ML ($39.95) $33 special, 19 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “The Freedom Hill 2019 is brilliantly clear and is pale, youthful gold with the slightest hints of peach. This wine was whole cluster pressed on the day of picking and then racked to a stainless steel tank for primary fermentation, after which it was racked to neutral French tight-grain oak barrels for élevage and malolactic fermentation. 2019 was very, very good to this block of vines, though the yields were down. The nose reminds me of some Puligny’s I’ve had. Not literally, but of the feeling I have often have. It’s hard to articulate, but it’s this delicate wild vanilla and creamy fruit type of aroma, without it being from barrels. The mineral nose has a roundness or curves to it that is not all soft. The mouth has plenty of acidity to carry this delicious, bone-dry Pinot blanc through to a long finish, and the more I try to write about this wine, the more elusive it becomes. It feels alpine and pristine but also has warmth and feels warming to the heart.”

Rosé? Orange wine? It’s Ramato and it’s delicious.
Cameron Winery Pinot Gris Ramato, Dundee Hills 2019 750ML ($31.95) $27 special
Winery Note “This lovely copper-colored libation takes its name from the Italian word for copper: Rame. This year’s rendition has a complex palate of white peach juice, mint, cedar, white pepper, tangerine, jasmine and lime zest. Notes of peach follow through on the palate along with marzipan, green almonds and a refreshing acidity. There is plenty of structure to stand up to meat, but not a major earthquake.”
Bonus Ramato! Check out these half-priced magnums of an Italian classic, arriving Friday:

Cote de Blancs goodness at a price that’s an easy buy.
Michel Mailliard Cuvee Gregory Premier Cru Brut, Champagne NV 750ML ($59.95) $39 special
VinopolNote: Mailliard is a Cote des Blancs grower based in Vertus. This bottling is 95% Chardonnay with 5% Pinot Noir made without malolactic fermentation with approximately 5.5g/L residual sugar. L12/4/17
Importer note “Michel Mailliard is a complex man. Besides being a vigneron and champagne maker, he is an innovator, entrepreneur, and leader with a touch of politician. While his name is unknown in America, among the champagne producers of Vertus, he is a very prominent figure. Decades ago Michel saw many of his neighbors with small vineyard plots of very good quality grapes in need of a better place to produce their champagnes. So, he created one of the first in champagne of what we call today custom crush facilities. These types of facilities are now common place in many wine regions around the world, helping artisan producers and garagists. Over time, the small start-up grew to house the current state-of-the-art champagne producing equipment and perfect storage facilities. Each vigneron controls the production of his/her champagne separately from the other producers. It has allowed even the smallest of champagne producers to make their own style of champagne. A number of years ago Michel turned his focus to further expanding and developing his family vineyards and brand Champagne Michel Mailliard. The objective of the House is to grow and create champagnes that reflect the vision and sensory cues that have been passed on from father to son. Until recently, Champagne Michel Mailliard was only available in France, sold mostly to private customers and poured in restaurants in Paris. Michel and his son, Gregory, are dedicated to presenting to the world their highly precise expressions of Champagne.”

Tiberio Pecorino Colline Pescaresi IGT, Abruzzo 2017 750ML ($24.95) $19.50 special
Ian D’Agata – Vinous 90 points “Abruzzo’s Tiberio winery has quickly risen to the top of the hierarchy not just in Abruzzo’s but in all of Italy. What the talented Cristiana Tiberio has achieved in the very hot 2017 vintage with Pecorino (a variety that does not like heat) is a testament to her talent. The 2017 Tiberio Pecorino is by no means the best Pecorino she has ever made (and frankly, it would have been very strange if it was otherwise, given the year’s weather), but it offers lovely balance with pure sage and kiwi notes that mingle with ripe orchard fruit nuances complicated by a saline edge. Both these wines made for a wonderful start to my meal, but they would have paired very well with all the other dishes I chose to eat this evening.”

A great N. Rhone bottling, especially for the price.
Domaine Eric et Joel Durand Cornas Premices, Rhone 2015 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “The 2015 Cornas Premices comes from a mix of granite terroirs and was mostly destemmed (75%) and aged in 20% new barrels. It offers an incredibly rich, opulent style in its plum, blackberry liqueur, lavender and peppery herb aromas and flavors. Thick, unctuous, and incredibly broad and expansive on the palate, with sweet tannin, it’s the largest production cuvée from this estate and is going to be an incredible value! Don’t miss it.”

It’s baaaaaack!
Felsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2016 750ML ($34.95) $28 special
Wine Advocate 94 points “Streamlined and elegant, this mid-weight red trots out notes of grilled herb and dark fruit nuances that segue to spice, tilled earth and savory tobacco, with great complexity. This 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga is still a bit closed and tight, but this beautiful wine boasts all the best qualities of this vintage. It shows elegance and power, two contrasting characteristics that only work well together in the world’s most achieved expressions. The most satisfying aspect of this Riserva is the crisp acidity on the close that keeps the palate refreshed and ready for the next sip.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “This red offers density and focus, creating an ideal frame for the cherry, strawberry, almond, leather and earth flavors. A firm backbone of tannins lends structure and the finish persists, leaving an accent of bitter almond. Best from 2022 through 2040. —B.S.”
Antonio Galloni 92+ points “The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva shows all the quality and pedigree of the year in its layered personality and overall nuance. Cedar, dried cherry, game licorice and tobacco convey the darker, gamier side of Sangiovese that is such a signature at Fèlsina. The 2016 finishes with terrific energy and bright acids that suggest it will enjoy a long life in the cellar, but readers should plan on giving it at least a few years in bottle.”

The Iconic Hubert Lignier’s 2017’s
Hubert Lignier is one of the finest names in Burgundy. The wines have been a core of the Neal Rosenthal portfolio since the 1978 vintage and have always been one of the jewels of the portfolio. These are some of the defining wines of Morey-St. Denis, different from Dujac stylistically but no less important or profound.
We have the 2017 vintage arriving next month—a fantastic and charming year across Burgundy and the wines chez Lignier are no exception. These promise to be amongst the best wines of the vintage, per usual, and the standard for 2017 is very high. If you’re already familiar with these wines, just click here to head straight through to a list on our website. If you aren’t you should browse below and make sure to try a bottle or two.
“Hubert and Laurent Lignier make a fantastic father-and-son team. Hubert Lignier, now in his 80s, seems to be working just as hard as ever, the male equivalent of Lalou Bize-Leroy, but without the weekend mountain climbing and yapping dogs. They are both indefatigable winemakers. Laurent Lignier guided the ship through choppy waters a decade ago following the untimely passing of Hubert’s son Romain, and with an expanded portfolio that includes various fermages and métayages, this has become one of my lengthiest tastings….
“Hubert Lignier has rapidly become one of the most dependable producers in Morey-Saint-Denis. I sometimes feared that such expansion across so many different vineyards and appellations might stretch Laurent and Hubert too much, and yet year after year they maintain quality control. There are several wines to mention. At the heart of their range is their Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Crus, and although the single-vineyards are tempting, I consistently find their Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru on the money, thanks to old vines that suffer millerandage and concentrate the berries. If you do insist on your Morey-Saint-Denis affixed to a specific vineyard, then look no further than their excellent Les Chaffots, courtesy of vines up to 90 years old. Throughout their range, one can see assiduous use of whole bunch addition: adding judiciously where necessary, de-stemming in total if that is what they feel is best. Nothing here is done by rote.
“The jewel in the crown is their single hectare of 50- to 60-year-old vines in Clos de la Roche, split between 0.62 hectares in Monts Luisants and 0.28 hectares in Les Fremieres. Occasionally it can be a contender for the best wine in the Côte de Nuits, and though the 2017 growing season probably means that it does not rank alongside the 2015 or 2016, it is still a very impressive wine, amongst the finest from this Grand Cru.” – Neal Martin, Vinous
“Laurent Lignier has once again produced a fine vintage for both his domaine holdings and négociant sources—the latter, amounting to some 3.5 hectares of vines, now clearly distinguished in our reviews. As readers will know, winemaking is pretty classical at this address, with a short cold maceration, two to three weeks’ maceration with one pigéage and one rémontage per day, and maturation in barrels, some third of which are new—if possible, without racking—for fully 22 months. Lignier began picking on September 4 and finished eight days later, reporting finished alcohols which, with only a couple of exceptions, are below 14%. The two pieces of news are the Lignier is now certified organic since May 2019, and that he is producing a new cuvée of Clos de la Roche, the story of which is told in the accompanying tasting notes.” –William Kelley, Wine Advocate

William Kelley – Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The king of the cellar, Lignier’s 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is superb, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of red and black cherries, cassis, warm spices, incense and grilled game bird. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and complete with striking depth and dimension, rich but satiny structuring tannins and excellent structural tension at the core, concluding with a long and penetrating finish. It’s a magical wine that will merit ardent pursuit when it’s released next year.”
Neal Martin – Vinous 93-95 points “The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a complex, engaging bouquet of ample black and red fruit, candied orange peel and light rose petal aromas that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite Clos Saint-Denis in style. The masculine, uncharacteristically stoic finish suggests it has longevity in mind. For those with the intention to cellar only. Impressive, but I am expecting more charm to manifest with the requisite bottle age.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2017 750ML ($419.95) $379 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Vinous 92-94 points “The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 20% whole bunches, matured in one-third new oak. It has a gorgeous bouquet of cranberry and raspberry fruit with veins of cassis; later, brown spices emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, good depth and fine grip, perhaps just missing a little precision toward the finish but still very fine.”
Burghound 91-93 points “An agreeably discreet application of wood sets off the attractively fresh and markedly floral aromas of black cherry, plum and abundant earth scents. There is a subtle minerality and vibrancy to the sleek and intense middle weight flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with a mildly austere finale that exhibits fine depth and persistence. This is both stylish and pretty and like the Griotte, could be approached with pleasure on the younger side if that’s your preference.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru, Cote de Nuits 2017 750ML ($699.95) $599 pre-arrival special
Burghound 91-93 points “There is much more moderate oak influence framing the cool and perfumed nose that offers up essence of various red berries and floral nuances along with a hint of the sauvage. The well-detailed and solidly concentrated flavors possess fine size and weight as well as plenty of sleek muscle and minerality on the stylish and classy finish. This is built to age yet it’s not so structured that it couldn’t be approached after a few years of bottle age.”
Neal Martin – Vinous 91-93 points “The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from purchased fruit. It has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis and light cassis aromas, and the one-third new oak is neatly integrated. The fleshy, generous palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and fine acidity, leading to a smooth, sensual finish. This might be earlier-drinking than Lignier’s other two Grand Crus.”

William Kelley – Wine Advocate 92-94+ points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is superb, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of warm spices, raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate and candied peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with the most depth and dimension of Lignier’s premiers crus, its deep core of fruit largely concealing the wine’s fine-grained structuring tannins, concluding with a saline finish. This cuvée hails from a parcel that straddles the climats Faconnières and Chenevery that was planted in 1936, 1942 and 1943, and which the Lignier family has always vinified as a single cuvée.”
Neal Martin – Vinous 91-93 points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru includes 25% whole bunch fruit. It has a tightly wound bouquet that opens in confident style to reveal red cherries, strawberry and fine mineralité. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite airy in style, but then suddenly exerts fine grip on the persistent, chalky-textured finish. Excellent.”

The sorbet-fresh palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a citric line of acidity and a harmonious, elegant finish. Bon vin.”
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 91-93 points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots reveals aromas of sweet cassis and cherries that mingle with nuances of cinnamon, licorice, dark chocolate and nori. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, layered and tangy, with a tauter, more acid-driven profile than the other premiers crus by virtue of its higher-altitude locate, displaying excellent concentration and high-quality structuring tannin.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier La Riotte, Morey St Denis Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($249.95) $199 pre-arrival special
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 90-93 points “The supplest, most open-knit of Lignier’s premiers crus from Morey, the 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Riotte bursts with aromas of plummy fruit, red currants, subtle spices and rose hip. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and expansive, with a layered mid-palate, fine but chalky tannins and a saline finish. This will win friends in its youth.”
Neal Martin – Vinous 90-92 points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte is aged in one-third new oak and includes 20% whole bunches. It has an expressive bouquet with touches of mint that infuse the vibrant red fruit. The dense, fresh palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry and hints of sour cherry toward the edgy finish. Good potential here.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Morey-Saint-Denis Trilogie, Cote de Nuits 2017 750ML ($149.95) $119 pre-arrival special
Neal Martin – Vinous 90-92 points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis “Trilogie,” which includes 25% whole bunch fruit from vines that tend to suffer millerandage, offers vivacious dark cherry and raspberry coulis scents on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a fine bead of acidity, good focus and a mineral-infused finish that delivers a pleasant sour edginess. Excellent.”
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis “Trilogie” hails from three lieux-dits, this year working out at around 60% Chenevery, 30% Porroux and 15% Clos Solon, and it was vinified with 25% whole cluster. Offering up aromas of sweet berries, cassis, licorice, cinnamon and chocolate, it’s medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered with a rich but lively core of fruit and fine but chalky structuring tannins. As usual, it’s one of the finest renditions of the appellation.”

Domaine Hubert Lignier Les Chabiots, Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($299.95) $249 pre-arrival special
Rosenthal Note ““Les Chabiots” is a dreamily situated premier cru that lies just north of Musigny, perched just above the fabled “Les Amoureuses” on the slope in the southern sector of Chambolle. Hubert and Laurent began purchasing grapes from a parcel of 20-year-old vines here during their recent inheritance battle, and they have continued to produce wine from this great but tiny cru ever since. The wine is intoxicatingly ethereal on the nose—open, enveloping, and inviting. The palate is round but well structured, with generous, sappy fruit, and a hedonistically succulent finish.”

The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit laced with orange peel, quite firm grip in the mouth and a slightly austere finish at the moment. Give this three or four years.”
William Kelley – Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Seuvrées is showing very well, unfurling in the glass with suggestions of cassis, raspberries, sweet soil tones and spices. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and nicely concentrated, with good depth at the core and fine-grained but firm, even chalky, structuring tannins. This should evolve well in bottle.”
