Wine Advocate 100 points “Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon charges from the gate with exuberant red and black cherries notes, black currants and mulberries with a beautiful roses and lavender perfume, plus hints of sandalwood and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied, concentrated and downright explosive in the mouth, it is still wearing loads of gorgeous puppy-fat fruit flavors, offering suggestions of the complex, multilayered blockbuster that it will emerge into. The structure deserves its own mention: wonderful, seamless freshness and oh-so-fine, pixelated tannins, with an extraordinary persistence of fruit and mineral nuances. Wow.”

We’re offering 10% off the following German Rieslings until Tuesday, September 25th at 10 am:
Heymann-Loewenstein Schieferterrassen Riesling, Mosel 2016 750ML ($37.95) Displayed price: $29, Subscriber-Only 10% Off Special: $26.10, 32 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 89 points “The 2016 Riesling “Schieferterrassen” is ripe and flinty on the nose, spicy and piquant, with lingering salinity and intense fruit on the palate. Tensioned and stimulating, with good ripeness, but a lush and elegant wine.”
Wwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch Bernkasteller Badstube Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2016 750ML ($34.95) Displayed price: $28, Subscriber-Only 10% Off Special: $25.20, 36 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht – Vinous 91 points “Ripe pear and apple dominate on the nose as well as on a silken, buoyant palate, supported by subtle sweetness. Mouthwatering salinity and transparency to crystalline stony nuances give the long, refreshingly juicy finish a fascinating and delightful sense of shimmer.”
Mosel Fine Wines 90 points “The 2016er Badstube Kabinett was harvested at 88° Oechsle. It offers a delicately ripe nose of pear, earthy spices, slate and smoke. The wine comes to life on the palate as acidity peps up some succulent pear right into the long finish and gives it a gorgeously lively and well-balanced side. The after-taste is elegantly playful. 2026-2041”A favorite producer among the staff, J Christoffel makes restrainted & old-school wines
Weingut Jos. Christoffel Jr. Christoffel-Prum Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett, Mosel 2016 750ML ($34.95) Displayed price: $27, Subscriber-Only 10% Off Special: $24.30, 36 bottles in stock now
Mosel Fine Wines 91 points “This offers a beautiful nose of pear, citrusy fruits, brown sugar and herbs. The wine proves quite racy on the palate as lively acidity provides the frame to fresh and zesty fruits. The finish is refreshingly tart, with a nice salty side. Still a bit wild, the wine will gain in presence and elegance at maturity. 2023-2036.”
David Schildknecht-Vinous 90 points “Alluring, site-typical scents of lemongrass, sassafras and tangerine set the stage for a lusciously juicy, invigoratingly tangy, zesty palate impression. The finish is unabashedly sweet but so brightly juicy that it refreshes and calls forth the next sip. The vintage’s A.P. #1, this represents its first-picked fruit. But even then, we’re talking mid-October, so early picking goes only a little way toward explaining the modest degrees Oechsle on which this alcoholically featherweight bottling is founded. The vines themselves and how they are handled – certainly including the yields Christoffel permits – are important factors.”
Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese**, Mosel 2013 750ML ($59.95) Displayed price: $49, Subscriber-Only 10% Off Special: $44.10, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 94 points “Bright in color the two-starred 7.5% alcohol 2013 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** is an intensely (noble) sweet and creamy-textured selection, which was picked on November 1 and is made for future generations. Very sweet and dense on the palate it still has to become more wine-y but the wine has definitely talent.” WA

Bow & Arrow
“This wine is way too easy to drink” –Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media
“…did I mention the cool factor? Sky high.” –Katherine Cole, The Oregonian
Scott Frank cracked the code to do two things that are nearly impossible for other Oregon wineries. First, he makes always wines that are vibrant, fresh and delicious in a truly old-world fashion. Second, the wines are affordable. And it’s for a great reason, he notes that “For someone entering the wine industry when I did, in the early 2000s… having a deep and meaningful relationship to Burgundy wasn’t possible. At least not for me. I mean, I worked in a grocery store.”
We should mention, too, that the wines are awesome. Don’t forget that part.
Bow & Arrow Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2017 750ML ($21.95) $17 special
Winery note “The Gamay Willamette Valley is our touchstone wine. This is the wine we’ve been making the longest and the one that embodies what we are about. It’s sourced from three Willamette Valley vineyards and then made in the old Beaujolais method of semi carbonic maceration. What does that mean? It means that it’s fucking electric and juicy and cranberry crunchy. As Gamay should be, in our opinion. Just a gorgeous version of this wine.”
John Gilman 90 points “The Time Machine Blanc 1.0 from Bow & Arrow is a roughly fifty-fifty blend of chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc, both barrel-fermented and blended together. The wine is 11.5 percent octane and bright and snappy on the palate, with a lovely nose of lime, apple, a touch of honeycomb, citrus peel and salty soil. On the palate the wine is crisp, fullish, bright and bouncy, with a fine core, lovely soil signature and just a bit of the wildness on the backend of a natural wine. This is loaded with personality and very tasty- not to mention a great, great value! 2018-2023.”
Bow & Arrow Hughes Hollow Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2015 750ML ($41.95) Was $33, Now $29 special
Grapelive 94 points “The rather exotic Hughes Hollow Vineyard Pinot Noir from Bow & Arrow is amazing stuff. It at first is tight and iron-laced in a way that reminds me of young Nebbiolo. A few swirls brings an exciting array of classic Pinot aromas and flavors out and, with further coaxing in the glass, a powerful sensation that you are tasting something otherworldly. Scott Frank, winemaker at Bow & Arrow, has done some thrilling wines from this unique north facing 30 year old site, and this 2015 is impressive. Hughes Hollow Vineyard (located in the South Salem hills on Jory and Nekia soils at about 675 feet [and] now farmed all organic) was a place Frank wanted Gamay from, but had to take Pinot grapes as part of the deal. Mercy be, what deal it has turned out to be…! This vineyard, fast becoming a favorite of mine in Bow & Arrow’s lineup, has its own personality. The vines here are own-rooted and have been dry farmed from the beginning which adds to the intensity of form and with a vintage like 2015, [where] ripe flavors, a savory bite and crisp acidity dominate. It bursts from the glass marked with the volcanic mineral and spice along with dried roses, tangy strawberries and minty herbs (stems?) before gathering its forces for a medium bodied, but powerful palate of black cherry, plum and briar laced raspberry along with cinnamon, black tea, earthy leather/porcini and lavender incense. This is a gripping Pinot, with a firm structure with young Vougeot-like tannins. The length is heavenly and long adding the vintage’s sweetness that offsets the rustic nature of this unpolished wine, this really sexy stuff. Drink over the next 3 to 7 years.”

Chateau Duhart-Milon ‘Moulin de Duhart’, Pauillac 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Enthusiast 91 points “A ripe rich style of wine, with swathes of black-currant fruits and cushioned tannins, this second wine of Duhart-Milon is full bodied and deliciously rich. The fruit carries the wine with its smooth tannins. Drink from 2022.”
James Suckling 90 points “Aromas of ripe fruit and berries with hints of chocolate and cedar. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a savory finish. Try in 2019.”
The average price is $45
Chateau Lagrange, Saint-Julien 2008 750ML ($79.95) $59 special
Neal Martin-Vinous 92 points “The 2008 Lagrange has an intense bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, spice box and damp earth/mossy aromas that are well defined. This makes an immediate impression. The palate is medium-bodied, a solid and stocky Lagrange with plenty of freshness. Maybe it lacks the grace of other vintages but the finish is pure and there is a fine long tobacco finish. Too many wine-lovers crack open Lagrange without allowing it the optimal bottle age, so please do give this another two or three years before grabbing the corkscrew. (Tasted at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual 10-Year On tasting.)”

Clos L’Eglise, Pomerol 2012 750ML ($89.95) $79 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Clos L’Eglise is wonderfully lifted in the glass, with plenty of Cabernet Franc aromatics woven throughout a core juicy, layered fruit. Rose petal, mint, cinnamon and sweet red berries grace the palate. Exquisite and beautifully nuanced throughout, the 2012 offers exceptional balance, with polished, silky tannins that round out the creamy finish. The 2012 is quite open today, but it could use another few years to soften further. The 2012 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Proprietor Hélène Garcin and her husband Patrice Leveque continue to raise the bar here and at their other properties in the region.”Jean-Claude Berrouet made 40 vintages of Petrus and now brings us this.
Chateau Samion, Lalande-de-Pomerol 2015 750ML ($49.95) $39 special
Importer note “Château Samion is the family domaine of Jean‐Claude Berrouet, the man who oversaw more than 40 vintages at the famed Château Petrus in Pomerol from 1964 until his retirement in 2007. Together with his son Jean‐Françis, they produce a small amount of wine from their holdings in Lalande‐de‐Pomerol which total a scant 1.2 hectares. The first vintage for Château Samion was in 1979 when they rented the vineyards, but since 1985 they have been owned by the Berrouet family and the vines are now an average of 45 years in age. Lalande‐de‐Pomerol is just north of the famous appellation of Pomerol which is home to the great estates of Petrus, Le Pin, and Trotanoy among others. Separated from Pomerol by the small Barbanne river, the appellation of Lalande‐de‐Pomerol consists of 2 communes, Néc and Lalande‐de‐Pomerol proper. In Lalande, the subsoils are principally gravel while in Néc, the vineyards are planted on a slightly elevated plateau on soils composed of gravel and sand. The vineyards of Château Samion are located in Lalande where the Merlot offers supple, deep red‐fruited wines that have fine tannins. ‘I try to work as naturally as possible’, Jean‐Claude says when asked about his practices in the vineyard. ‘It’s healthy for wine and for life’, he says. At Château Samion, there are no chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides used. Treatments to avoid rot or mildew are all that is ever employed and only when necessary. There is but one wine made at Château Samion. The wine is made from 100% Merlot, and one will find it is made in the same manner and with the same exacting care as Château Petrus. The grapes are harvested by hand, and then vinified in concrete vats. Following the vinification, the wine is racked and aged for 20 months in 15% new French oak casks (225 liters).”

“a compelling Syrah that brooks no argument”-WA
Charles Smith K Vintners The Beautiful Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($79.95) $59 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 98 points “Co-fermented with 3% Viognier, the 2015 Syrah The Beautiful is fabulous, bursting from the glass with exotic aromas of violets, blackberries, panforte, black olives and lychee nuts (fanciful though that mélange sounds). On the palate, it’s full-bodied, velvety and lavishly textural, cutting a broad swath across the palate, with a deep core of dark fruit and pungent savory nuance, concluding with a fine-grained, mouthwateringly sapid finish. It’s a compelling Syrah that brooks no argument.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “Co-fermented with 4% Viognier, the 2015 Syrah The Beautiful Powerline Vineyard was fermented with plenty of stems and brought up mostly in neutral oak. Candied violets, game, blackcurrants, and incense notes all emerge from this beautiful, seamless beauty. It has a rich, full-bodied profile on the palate as well as a great mid-palate, fine tannin, and nicely integrated acidity. This is another singular, layered, silky beauty from this team. Keep in mind, this comes from very young vines, so I suspect the best is yet to come here, which is saying something at this quality level.”
The return of the high scoring favorite.
Charles Smith K Vintners Powerline Estate Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 4 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “Made from 100% Syrah, the 2015 Syrah Powerline Vineyard is much more backward, brooding, and mineral-laced, with sensational notes of blackcurrants, cassis, crushed rock, and tapenade. A true powerhouse on the palate, with terrific concentration, building tannin, and a great, great finish, it’s a singular, incredible wine that does everything right. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following decade.”
With incredible purity, notable structure, and a lifted, perfumed style, it’s flat-out gorgeous
Charles Smith K Vintners Klein Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($89.95) $79 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points “Almost always one of my favorite releases at this address, the 2015 Syrah Klein Vineyard is up with the crème de la crème in the vintage. Plums, candied cherries, violets, lavender, chocolate, and tons of dusty, earthy minerality all emerge from this exotic, singular, full-bodied, effort that has building tannin and a vibrant, rich, textured style. With incredible purity, notable structure, and a lifted, perfumed style, it’s flat-out gorgeous.”
The Chateauneuf styled blend from K Vintners
Charles Smith K Vintners Charlotte Red Blend, Walla Walla Valley 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 95 points “The 2015 Charlotte Rhône Blend Rock Garden Vineyard checks in as a co-fermented blend of 43% Grenache, 24% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, and 13% Roussanne vinified in concrete aged in neutral puncheons and demi-muids. Its saturated ruby/plum color is followed by a rocking bouquet of smoked meats, dried herbs, spice-box and blackcurrant fruit. It’s medium to full-bodied, seamless, and silky on the palate, yet has savory tannin that’s going to keep it drinking beautifully for a decade.”
Seven new releases are arriving in October.

New Rare-Red Review
As flexible & fun as Beaujolais (and affordable, too!)
Ameztoi Stimatum, Getariako Txakolina 2017 750ML ($21.95) $19 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Grapelive 91 points “The Basque Beaujolais! The Ameztoi Stimatum (Esteemed) is 100% Hondarribi Beltza from vines grown on limestone in the Getaria region of northwestern Spain. Vine ages [range] from 10 to 100 years old. [The wine] is fermented and aged in stainless steel. Grown on an exposed peninsula north of Bilbao, this red was done with native yeasts and bottled with that touch of spritz like the whites usually have, making for a dry, but fruity fresh, easy to quaff wine with low natural alcohol and soft in tannin. This maybe one of the most pleasing, intriguing and fun picnic wines in the world. It’s deep purple/garnet color contrasts with its bright lightness of body. Ameztoi is one of the top producers of Getariako Txakolina with Ignacio Ameztoi being the seventh generation of his family carrying on their tradition of winemaking Txakolina in Getaria. The winery owns 20 hectares of vineyards in the best sites which are from vines that can almost be seen from St. Sebastian, crafting wines that have terroir and the influence of the cool Atlantic Ocean. This 2017 Ameztoi Stimatum, with its skin contact for 20 days, is beautifully dark in the glass and has a spicy and floral bouquet opening to its light/medium palate with crushed violets, white pepper, fresh picked wild berries, black cherry and racy currant fruits along with a zippy acidity, a touch of cinnamon, basil/herb and a hint of almost carbonic creaminess. Those that like Gamay, Dolcetto or Trousseau wines will love this red. It is so drinkable and friendly with a wide range of cuisines, it just makes for huge smiles. Drink this stuff up fresh.”

Hot Items / Limited Supply
Arriving Late October
Bartolo Mascarello Barolo DOCG, Piedmont 2014 750ML ($219.95) $179 pre-arrival special, only 10 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94+ points “Maria Teresa Mascarello’s 2014 Barolo has put on a good bit of weight since I first tasted it, yet it remains nervous, tightly wound and compact – which is to say, very much in the style of the year. Time in the glass brings out a host of bright red cherry, pomegranate, mint, leather and orange peel nuances, but only with reluctance. The 2014 is a positively electric Barolo, but it likely won’t be ready to charm anytime soon. Readers should plan on cellaring it for at least a handful of years. Sadly, production is down by 40%.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Here is another very successful expression from one of the appellation’s legendary estates at the heart of Barolo. The 2014 Barolo is light and delicate in appearance with a delightful bouquet of wild rose, forest berry and blue fruit. Violets and lavender give the bouquet a pretty sense of lift and intensity that reminds you of the cool climate and long growing season that characterizes this vintage. This wine also offers evident freshness with bright berry flavors and a subtle feeling of crisp crunchiness. The tannins are superbly integrated within the silky and streamlined body of this elegant Barolo. This wine will surely offer exciting bottle evolution.”
The average price is $203
Bartolo Mascarello Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont 2016 750ML ($41.95) $33 pre-arrival special, only 9 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90 points “2016 Dolcetto d’Alba is a very pretty, restrained wine, with good structure and tons of varietal character. Tightly wound and structure, the 2016 will benefit from a good 6-12 months in bottle. There is less radiance and opulence than in the 2015, but more than enough complexity to hold interest for at least a few years. Violet, plum and blackberry overtones, along with grippy tannins, give the wine its brooding, inward personality.”
The average price nationally is $37
Bartolo Mascarello Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont 2015 750ML ($59.95) $49 pre-arrival special, only 7 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The 2015 Barbera d’Alba brings together the sumptuous personality of the year with a very classic sense of structure. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice and floral notes abound in this fleshy, voluptuous Barbera. Drink it over the next decade.”
The average price is $54
Domaine Fontavin
Run by the seventh generation of the family to grow vines, Helene Chouvet has helmed the estate since 1996. She creates a magnificent old-vine Grenache from the rocky single-vineyard Les Saumades. We’re excited to feature two vintages below. The 2015 arrives later this month and the 2016 arrives early next year.
Wine Advocate 95 points “A hugely impressive effort, the 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape David et Goliath favors the giant. Christmas spices and dark fruit both lead the way and linger on the finish. The real story is the wine’s richness on the palate, where it packs a velvety wallop of soft, plush tannins. It’s 95% Grenache from Les Saumades, matured in demi-muids.”
This is the lowest listed price in the USA today!
Arriving in February 2019
Wine Advocate 96 points “An impressive follow-up to the 2015 version, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape David et Goliath is full-bodied, creamy and plush, showing remarkable richness, length and purity, without excessive ripeness or weight. Cherry and peach fruit picks up hints of dried spices, thyme and bay leaf on the long finish. It’s almost all old-vine Grenache, sourced from the rolled stones of the Les Saummades lieu-dit and aged in demi-muids.”
German Top Growth Dry Rieslings
(And Pinot Blanc!)
Emrich-Schonleber
Importer notes “Werner and his son Frank remain one of lowest profile great producers in Germany. Those who know the greatest of the greats of dry Riesling wouldn’t dare to miss the mention of the Emrich-Schönlebers when speaking of Germany’s elite dry Riesling producers… Their styles are deeply core-powered, with waves of electrically charged mineral impressions from one sip to the next. Without a single hair out of place, they demonstrate nearly perfect craftsmanship in both the vineyards and the cellar, which yields terroir-driven wines of tremendous polish and intention. There are only a few who can match the dry Rieslings of the Emrich-Schönleber and not a one who can be placed above.”

Okonomierat Rebholz ‘Ganz Horn-im Sonnenschein’ Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Pfalz 2017 750ML ($99.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Stuart Pigott-JamesSuckling.com 97 points “At once ripe and generous at the front, yet austere and radical at the finish, this is a super-straight and mineral wine that needs some time to give its best. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink in 2019.”
Stuart Pigott-JamesSuckling.com 97 points “In order to describe the herbal notes in the nose of this wine to you properly, I would need to spend the whole evening studying them! Rose hips and wild berries, plus a hint of passion fruit. Crystalline finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Drink or hold.”
Stuart Pigott-JamesSuckling.com 97 points “This proves that pinot blanc really can give a great dry white wine. Crazy, exotic fruit in the nose, but not a jot too much. Then comes the enormously concentrated palate and a finish that literally takes your breath away. From biodynamically grown grapes. Respekt certified. Great aging potential. Drink or hold.”

Silky and precise on the palate, offering alluringly sweet, spice-tinged cherry and raspberry liqueur flavors and a hint of five-spice powder. Becomes richer with air, with no loss of vibrancy, and finishes with powerful, spicy thrust, fine-grained tannins and an exotic floral pastille note that lingers with serious tenacity.”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Pale to medium ruby-purple, the 2015 Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard is scented of kirsch, mulberries and raspberry tart with underlying Chinese five spice, hoisin and mossy bark hints. Medium-bodied, there’s a very seductive mid-palate of red berry and exotic spice flavors, supported by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with spicy layers.”

Eisele Vineyard ‘Altagracia’ Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2015 750ML ($149.95) Was $133, Now $121.90 September Clearance Price
James Suckling 95 points “This is a dense and juicy red with characters of blackberries, chocolate and pine needles. Sweet tobacco, too. Full body and round, polished tannins. A more dialed-in, terroir character than in past vintages. 88% cabernet sauvignon, 7% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. (5/2018)”
Wine Advocate 94 points “Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Altagracia has slightly muted black cherries, crushed black plums and cassis with hints of licorice, black soil and cracked pepper plus a waft of tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, rich and expressive in the mouth, it delivers a lot of layers and wonderfully fine tannins, finishing long and earthy.”
