High-scoring finds that just arrived Friday

CALIFORNIA
Blankiet Estate Paradise Hills Vineyard Proprietary Red, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 2 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points “Savory herbs, menthol, licorice, plums and new leather lead to dark red and black fruit in the 2011 Blankiet Estate Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard. Another impeccable, gracious wine, Blankiet’s 2011 Proprietary Red Paradise Hills Vineyard impresses for its creaminess and volume. Hints of orange peel, rose petals and savory herbs add further dimensions of expression. This dark, brooding wine needs time to settle down, but it starts coming together nicely with time in the glass, so a few more years in bottle will help tremendously. The 2011 is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and drops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.”

Blankiet Estate Paradise Hills Vineyard Rive Droite, Napa Valley 2011 750ML ($119.95) $99 special, 1 bottle available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The Merlot-based 2011 Rive Droite Paradise Hills Vineyard is one of the silkiest, most polished wines readers will find in this vintage. A sweet, intensely floral, Pinot-inflected bouquet melds into small red berries, flowers, mint, licorice and spices. The style is medium-bodied and supremely graceful, with layers of fruit that flesh out beautifully in the glass. Violets, lavender and rose petals linger on the sublime, layered finish. The 2011 has really come together nicely since I last tasted it this past Spring. The blend is 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.”

Blankiet Estate Paradise Hills Vineyard Rive Droite, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($349.95) $289 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 99 points “Another compelling wine was the 2012 Rive Droite, which is Blankiet’s homage to Right Bank Pomerols from Bordeaux. A blend of 95.8% Merlot and 4.2% Cabernet Franc, there are 380 cases of this sexpot of a wine. This could easily be mistaken for a Napa Valley version of Petrus. Loads of mulberry fruit, licorice, crème de cassis, mocha and toffee are present in this huge, full-bodied, super-opulent and luscious wine. This is about as seductive and rich as dry wine can be, and the wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15-20 years. This is a killer effort! Their cuvée of all the culled out lots is called the Prince of Hearts.”

Colgin Cellars IX Estate Syrah, Napa Valley 2012 750ML ($279.95) $249 special, 3 bottles available
Robert Parker 98 points “The wine that probably gets ignored, but shouldn’t be, is their small production of 350-400 cases of Syrah from their estate vineyard. The 2012 IX Syrah Estate blew me away, and I’ve said many times that it always tastes as if it’s co-fermented with Viognier, but it is always 100% Syrah. It has a honeysuckle, flowery, almost white/peachy component in the blackberry and meaty aromatics that always throw me off. The wine is aged in small oak, but the oak is concealed by the lavish amount of fruit, glycerin and extract. This is a super-intense, massive, yet elegant and complex Syrah that should drink well for 10-15 years.”

Sine Qua Non Raven Series Syrah No. 5, Santa Barbara County 2006 750ML ($319.95) $269 special, 2 bottles available
Robert Parker 96 points “The 2006 Raven Series Syrah, a blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 2% Viognier that spends just under two years in French oak. Offering a dense purple color, gorgeous fruit, and a sweet perfume of graphite, blackberries, blueberries, charcoal, licorice, tar, and new oak, it is a dense, full-bodied, well-endowed, beautifully layered, pure Syrah that should drink well for 10-15 years.”

Sine Qua Non Raven Series Syrah No. 3, Santa Barbara County 2006 750ML ($319.95) $269 special, 2 bottles available

Sine Qua Non Resiste White Blend, California 2013 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “A rich, voluptuous white, the 2013 White Wine Résisté is built on pure texture. Honey, apricot pit, succulent peaches and mint all race from the glass. The high acidity of the Petite Manseng adds a kick of brightness on the finish. The blend is 45% Roussanne, 26% Chardonnay, 14% Petite Manseng, 10% Viognier and 5% Marsanne; 40% from Eleven Confessions, 29% Cumulus and 31% Bien Nacido.”

Sine Qua Non Male Syrah 2013 750ML ($399.95) $299 special, 4 bottles available
A.K.A Stock Syrah
Notes from Jeb Dunnuck “There are few greater success stories in wine than that of Sine Qua Non’s Manfred Krankl. Austrian-born and showing up penniless in Los Angeles in 1980, he went on to create one of the greatest wine estates in the world today by sheer talent and work ethic.”

Sine Qua Non Poker Face Syrah, Santa Barbara County 2004 750ML ($699.95) $599 special, 2 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck-Wine Advocate 97 points “Starting off the Syrah-based wines, the 2004 Poker Face (Syrah) is aging beautifully. A blend of 96% Syrah, 2.5% Mourvedre and 1.5% Viognier (from the Eleven Confessions, White Hawk, Alban, Bien Nacido, and Alta Mesa vineyards) that was aged in 80% new French oak, it offers up a perfumed, fresh bouquet of sweet blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, spring flowers and licorice that gives way to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured feel on the palate. Rich and decadent, it has notable, yet beautifully integrated acidity and stays remarkably fresh, detailed and even elegant. It still needs a lengthy decant to shine, and will continue to thrill over the coming decade or so.”

WASHINGTON
Cayuse Vineyards Bionic Frog Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 97-99 points “I think the best of the Syrahs is the 2013 Syrah Bionic Frog, and while I’ve liked other single vineyards more than this cuvee in the past, it seems a solid step up in both 2012 and 2013. The 2013 offers incredible notes of roasted herbs, beef blood, mushrooms, scorched earth and sweet black fruits in a full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated, structured, serious style. Short-term cellaring should be the name of the game here, and while it should offer plenty of pleasure around age 5-6, I’d put money on it still singing at age 20.” JD

Cayuse Vineyards Cailloux Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94-97 points “Starting off the 2013 Syrahs from barrel, the 755-case 2013 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard was cofermented with 5% Viognier and is aged in twice-used French oak. It offers a ripe, voluptuous style in its ground pepper, smoked meats, peat and sweet dark fruits. These give way to a full-bodied Syrah that has solid concentration and good tannin. The Viognier here normally gives this cuvee some early charm, but it should evolve gracefully as well.” JD

Cayuse Vineyards En Cerise Vineyard Syrah, Walla Walla Valley 2013 750ML ($149.95) $119 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95-97 points “The 2013 Syrah en Cerise, of which there’s only 361 cases to go around, sees almost all neutral oak and is always 100% Syrah. Peppery, classic rocks, peat moss, violets and plenty of sweet black cherry and cassis aromas all show here. It is full-bodied, layered, sexy and gorgeously textured on the palate. The texture here is classic Cayuse, and it has fine, sweet tannin that come through on the finish.”

Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie, Rhone 2013 750ML ($149.95) $119 special
Domaine Jamet Cote Rotie, Rhone 2013 1.5L ($319.95) $279 special
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 94 points “Inky ruby. A vibrant spice- and mineral-accented bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry and blueberry, candied flowers, incense and peppery spices. Sweet, palate-staining red and blue fruit compote and violet pastille flavors are complicated by notes of cracked pepper and bitter chocolate, with a spicecake nuance gaining strength in the glass. Velvety, pliant tannins add gentle grip to a strikingly long and incisive finish that strongly repeats the floral and mineral notes.” JRd

Vignobles Brunier Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses du Diable 2011 750ML ($49.95) $33 special
Case-12 Vignobles Brunier Domaine Les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses du Diable 2011 750ML ($479.95) $359 special (that’s only $29.92/bottle!)
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 93 points “Vivid ruby. Heady scents of candied cherry, raspberry preserves, anise and potpourri. Shows a darker profile in the mouth, offering palate-staining blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and a strong floral quality. Picks up smokiness with air and finishes with superb focus and length and youthful tannic grip. No question that this is one of the best wines I tasted from Gigondas this year.” JR

Clos Fourtet, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2012 750ML ($149.95) $119 special
Wine Spectator 94 points –#9 Top 100 in 2015– “Gorgeous, with a pure, unadorned violet aroma giving way to very ripe and stylish plum, boysenberry and blackberry fruit. Offers a suave mouthfeel, with anise and tobacco hints filling the background. A finely stitched chalk note extends the finish. Not shy on depth, and sneakily long. Best from 2017 through 2030. 3,500 cases made.”JM
Robert Parker 95 points “Having just had the 2003 and 2005 from my cellar, I can attest to the magnificent turnaround in quality this famous estate on the eastern side of St.-Emilion has achieved. All of it is attributable to its dynamic proprietor, Philippe Cuvelier. The 2012 Clos Fourtet (usually 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc) has beautiful blackberry and blueberry fruit and an inky purple color. With flawless integration of acidity, tannin, wood and alcohol, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning richness, this is impressive and certainly one of the vintage’s top wines. It should evolve beautifully for 15-20 years, and be drinkable in 3-4. Yields were a modest 32 hectoliters per hectare with the alcohol at 14%.”

Italy
Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 1.5L ($199.95) $179 special
Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a striking wine that shows uncompromising varietal pureness, albeit in a most concentrated and elaborate form. This is what great Sangiovese is all about. There’s so much happening on the nose and the wine brings you to cherry, spice, licorice, cured meat, pressed rose and grilled meat in equal measure. No one element overpowers the next. The mouthfeel is also tight and bright with the kind of fruit intensity that promises long cellar aging. This Brunello is only at the beginning of a long road ahead. The longer the wine stays in the glass, the more it offers in terms of complexity and intensity. This is a true standout that can be enjoyed for up to 20 years ahead.” ML
Wine Spectator 95 points –#4 Top 100 in 2015– “Rich, with excellent density, ripe cherry and plum fruit, and a well-integrated structure. Licorice, earth and tobacco notes add depth while this cruises to a long, tobacco- and mineral-tinged finish. Shows balance and grip. Best from 2018 through 2033.”

Wine Spectator 94 points –#43 Top 100 in 2015–“Coffee and chocolate aromas signal this exotic and fragrant red. The cherry and plum notes are almost afterthoughts, while spice, leather and tobacco flavors come to the fore, with vivid acidity through the lingering finish. Best from 2019 through 2035.” WS

Chateau Guiraud, Premier Cru Classé, Sauternes 2009 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 26 bottles available
Chateau Guiraud, Premier Cru Classé, Sauternes 2009 375ML ($59.95) $39 special, 36+ half-bottles available
Wine Spectator 96 points ‘Highly Recommended’ –#5 Top 100 in 2012–“This blend of 65 percent Sémillon and 35 percent Sauvignon Blanc comes from 35- to 40-year-old vines on a 316-acre property co-owned since 2006 by Robert Peugeot (of Peugeot automobiles), Olivier Bernard (Domaine de Chevalier), Stephan von Neipperg (Canon-La Gaffelière and others) and Xavier Planty, the estate’s longtime general manager. Planty, who oversees winemaking, strives for low yields; the vines usually average nine-tenths of a ton per acre, about half the legal limit in Sauternes. While 2009 was a banner year for red Bordeaux, the region’s sweet wines are impressive, too—the best vintage since 2001.  This is a bird of a different feather, with an exotic, vibrant aroma of toasted coconut, followed by an almond cream note that gives way to the core of green fig, papaya, Cavaillon melon and honey. There’s stunning richness and mouthfeel, with the power to be one of the longer-lived wines of the vintage. Very impressive. Best from 2015 through 2040.”WS

Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier Shiraz – Viognier, Central Victoria, Australia 2012 750ML ($19.95) $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Spectator 90 points –#98 Wine of the Year in 2014– “Vibrant, expressive and distinctive, with citrus and mineral overtones around a core of blueberry and spice, lingering on the taut finish.”

Barbera

The history of the Italian grape varietal Barbera dates back to the 13th century originating in Piedmont and has for the most part had to take a back seat to Nebbiolo plantings. But don’t overlook its value. Over the past couple of decades, winemakers have been using methods to perfect the quality. French oak has been introduced to balance the high acidity and astringency this grape is known for, resulting in an ideal wine for food.  With more producers taking this grape seriously, Barbera has become a wine of great variety. You can find them in a wide range from easy-drinking table wines to more powerful and complex with longer aging potential. Pair it with any rich meal for its high acid character, or a simple pizza or pasta dish.

We offer thirteen Barbera wines and seven blends that include Barbera.  Below are eight of our selections, all available here now.  Browse the rest through our web store

Giacomo Conterno Cerretta Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($69.95) $59 special, 8 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2013 Barbera d’Alba Cerretta is a touch more precise and linear than it often is, the signature of the cool year. Graphite and smoke notes appear first, followed by deeply expressive, pliant fruit notes that fill out the sides of the palate. The freshness and vibrancy of the year are the signatures, though, in an energetic, saline-infused Barbera that will drink well for a number of years.” AG

Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia Barbera d’Alba 2012 1.5L ($119.95) $89 special, 7 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Barbera d’Alba Cascina Francia stands out for its exceptional finesse and delicacy. Sweet rose petals, mint, cinnamon and red berries are all laced together in a soft, polished Barbera long on class and finesse. Perfumed notes continues to open up in the glass, while brighter, more saline-inflected notes give the wine its sense of energy and tension. This is a magnificent showing. Ideally, readers will be able to give the 2012 at least another year or two in bottle.” AG

Antonio Galloni 95 points “Utterly magnificent in the glass, 2013 Barbera d’Alba Francia presents a rich, almost demi-glace like texture that envelops the palate. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, hard candy, rose petal and wild flowers all flesh out effortlessly. The 2013 has the energy of a cool, late-ripening vintage, but with striking inner sweetness and depth. Elegant, restrained and sophisticated, the 2013 is another real gem from Roberto Conterno. This is just about as majestic as Barbera gets.” AG

Pommard

In the center of the Cote de Beaune, between the Volnay and Beaune, is the commune of Pommard, named for the Roman goddess of fruit trees, Pomona.  This commune is home to the Pommard AOC.  Pommard AOC wines are generally noted for a masculine style, particularly in contrast to the lighter, more feminine style from the neighboring Volnay AOC.  The wines produced in Pommard are typically fuller in body, richer in tannins, have concentrated flavors, and are noted for their dark fruit and ironish minerality.  When young, these wines are generous with blackcurrant, blackberry and cherry notes.  With age, these wines develop secondary notes, inclusive of leather, musk, animal or chocolate.

Pommard vines are grown between the two steep hills of Mont Buisson and Montagne-Saint-Desiree.  The best vineyard land is above the flat, fertile plain between these hills, but below the tops of the hills.  These slopes provide several different soil types depending upon altitude.  The lower portion of the hills has rich alluvial soil, the mid-slope is composed of clay and limestone, and the upper portion is marl.  In general, these soils tend to be rich in iron, thought to give Pommard wines their characteristic masculine style of richness and tannin.

Within the Pommard AOC are 27 Premier Crus sites.  Two groupings of these, Les Epenots (or Epeneaux) and Les Rugiens are the most broadly respected. But do not be deterred by the lack of Grand Crus in Pommard!  Both Les Epenots and the subsection Les Rugiens-Bas were offered Grand Cru status, but the vignerons declined to accept the greater restrictions on production.  Les Epenots is a historic vineyard site, named after the thorny undergrowth that covers the landscape.  It has developed multiple spellings over the centuries.  It is composed now of the three Premier Cru vineyards: Clos des Epeneaux, Grands Epenots and Petits Epenots.  Wines with the full Les Epenots or Epeneaux name are made from grapes sourced from any combination of these three superb vineyards.  Its soil is predominately clay and limestone, resulting in rich wines that reward ample cellaring.

The Premier Cru climat Les Rugiens is composed of Les Rugiens Bas and Les Rugiens Haut.  The word Rugiens is a derivative of the French word for red, rouge, and makes reference to the iron-rich soils.  The soil is rich in minerals and has excellent drainage.  These wines are quite rich and masculine in style.  Of the two, Les Rugiens Bas is considered the greater.

Wines from the Pommard AOC are powerfully lush and intense wines that are superb with rich, hearty fare.  Their higher amount of tannin makes them excellent wines to pair with stews and roasts.  Try pairing them with beef, lamb or poultry stews.  Pungent or aged soft cheeses and roasted vegetables make excellent pairings, too.  Wild game and roast meats match well with the more mature wines.

We offer 18 wines from Pommard.
Here’s a list of 10 of our top picks, available here now:

Domaine Dugat-Py Pommard La Levriere Vieilles Vignes 2009 750ML ($249.95) $199 special, 9 bottles available
Burghound 89-92 points “A very ripe nose features nose of plum, cassis and warm earth aromas that lead to rich, full-bodied and very serious big-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and a sappy, long and mouth coating finish. This is an exceptionally good villages.”

Domaine Faiveley Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru 2011 750ML ($119.95) $79 special, 8 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 91-94 points “Good bright, full red.  Medicinal red cherry, rose petal and licorice on the pure but reticent nose.  Deep, sappy and spicy in the mouth, displaying excellent lift for the vintage.  Finishes with terrific saline breadth and suave tannins.  This very rich and sophisticated Rugiens will need time in bottle.” ST

Domaine Henri Boillot Pommard 2010 750ML ($89.95) $69 special, 16 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 90-92 points “The 2010 Pommard is pure sensuality. Sweet roses, dark red fruit and spices wrap around the palate in this supple, refined wine. The Pommard impresses for its elegance and richness. It is a beautiful and highly representative 2010. Sweet floral notes linger on the finish. The Pommard is made from vines in Clos Blanc, a 1er Cru vineyard. – Henri Boillot turned out a superb set of 2010 reds. Best of all, readers won’t have to shell out a fortune to enjoy them, as a number of the more modestly priced wines far exceed the quality of their respective appellations” AG

Domaine Henri Boillot Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru 2011 750ML ( $119.95) $99 special, 13 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92+ points “Good bright, deep red.  Redcurrant, pepper, iron and earth tones on the nose, lifted by a suggestion of dried flowers.  Reticent today but showing outstanding vinosity to its soil-driven flavors of redcurrant, spices, licorice, pepper and underbrush.  Best today on the very long, floral back end, where the firm tannins currently clamp down on the wine’s fruit.  This youthfully medicinal wine is tighter than the Volnay premier crus here and in need of a good seven or eight years of cellaring.  Incidentally, Sebastien Boillot describes the family’s 2011s as less charming than the ’10s and ’12s and believes that they will need long aging.” ST

Louis Jadot Clos de La Commaraine, Pommard Premier Cru 2010 750ML ($59.95) $49 special, 23 bottles available
Wine Advocate 89-91 points “The 2010 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine is a little fleshier and deeper than the villages, but it remains relatively airy and delicate. Sweet red berries, flowers, licorice and tobacco are some of the notes that are woven together in this gorgeous Burgundy. The firm tannins will need a few years in bottle to soften. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2030.” WA

Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Vignots 2011 750ML ($599.95) $399 special, 6 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90 points “The 2011 Pommard Les Vignots was bottled December 2012. It has a complex, slightly earthy bouquet with subtle marine influences, defined and focused with hints of black olive emerging with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine focus, imbued with an Oriental edge (hoisin) which is folded into a fine silky finish. Drink now-2020.” NM
Burghound 89 points “There is a soft touch of wood to the notably ripe yet cool and airy aromas of plum, cassis and wet stone. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the detailed finish that exudes a fine minerality. This balanced effort delivers fine depth and length for its level.” BH

Louis Jadot Pommard 2011 750ML ($49.95) $41.90 special, 21 bottles available
“A hint of wood can be seen on the ripe but agreeably fresh aromas of red berry fruit liqueur and warm earth scents. There is reasonably good volume to the round and supple flavors that offer good detail and verve on the lightly mineral-inflected, austere and rustic finish where the wood resurfaces.”—Burghound

Philippe Pacalet Pommard 2010 750ML ($79.95) $69 special, 9 bottles available
Grapelive 95 points “I may have mentioned Pacalet a few times, may even have reviewed his wines a few times, maybe this wine too, but WOW this beautiful 2010 Pommand is now stunning and has really blossomed into a fantastic Pinot Noir and merits extra attention now. Philippe Pacalet is one of the new darlings of the natural wine movement and certainly a rising star in Burgundy, his careful artisan technique and minimalist winemaking is turning more than a few heads, these wines are clear, bright, fresh and transparent, not in the least bit old school barnyard funky, and while people argue the whole gambit of ideas about so called natural wine, Pacalet is quietly crafting elegant and glorious Burgundy. I tasted some of his first imported efforts and was very impressed, especially with his Chambolle-Musigny, and when recently sampled his whites I was blown away, his Meursault and Puligny wines are off the charts, but a few days ago I got a chance to taste this Pommard and I can tell you it was a magic moment, this is a delicate and gorgeous red Burgundy that seduces and charms in a way that only a Cote d’ Or can, in majestic fashion and spiritually emotional in experience. The nose is perfumed with fresh rose petals, red tea, hints of pepper, violets and raspberry leading to a dreamy palate of silky cherry, plum and currant fruits with a lift of acidity, a gentle spine of refined tannin, a touch of oak, mineral and earth adding mystery and a long finish that lingers with hints of red peach, cinnamon stick, kirsch, lavender essence and truffle. This soulful effort is a medium bodied Pinot Noir that reveals everything with a light touch, but has sultry powers that will drive you crazy for more, sometimes a wonderful Burgundy can touch your soul, this is that kind of wine, drink from 2014 to 2020.”

Burghound 92 points “This is also ultra-elegant, high-toned and admirably pure with essence of red pinot fruit trimmed in hints of underbrush merging seamlessly into detailed and lightly mineral-infused flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and absolutely impeccable balance. An ageworthy Pommard of finesse and refinement.”BH

Domaine de la Vougeraie Pommard Les Petits Noizons 2010 750ML ($79.95) $66 special, 10 bottles available
Burghound 89-91 points –Outstanding–“This is the first wine to display any significant reduction but here it’s enough to block an evaluation of the nose. The rich, intense and energetic middle weight flavors possess fine precision and plenty of mineral nuances, all wrapped in a firm, mouth coating, dusty and well-balanced finish. Petits Noizons is arguably the best villages level vineyard in Pommard and the quality of this excellent effort merits consideration.” BH

Ameztoi Rubentis Rosado, Getariako Txakolina , Spain 2013 1.5L ($69.95) $59 special, 3 magnums available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Pale orange. Lively, sharply-focused tangerine and strawberry aromas, with a zesty mineral overtone gaining strength with air. Pure and racy in style, the brisk red berry and floral flavors delivering a refreshingly bitter edge. Closes taut and stony, with very good persistence and resonating floral character.” JR

Case-3 Bodegas Muga Rosado, Rioja DOCa , Spain 2014 1.5L ($81.95) $75 special, 4 three-packs available (that’s only $25/magnum!)
Wine Advocate 88 points “The rosé from Muga called simply 2014 Rosado is a classical “clarete” from the Rioja Alta, produced with Garnacha and Viura and in 2014, exceptionally, a pinch of Mazuelo (Cariñena) all harvested at the same time. The full clusters are pressed directly and the different musts are blended and then put to ferment in well-seasoned oak vats where it matures in contact with the lees for some four months. It’s a pale, salmon-colored wine with a clean, focused nose and a light palate, that is pleasant, fresh and easy to drink. Bring out those lamb chops!” WA

Fleshy and dry, with an herbal flourish and a touch of bitterness emerging on the back half. Shows good power and cut on the finish, which leaves notes of anise and dried citrus fruits behind.” JR

A Bit of Bichot

Savigny les Beaune is an excellent region in Burgundy to find great value Pinot.  The Bichot family has roots in Burgundy dating back to the 1350s.  Since 1996, Albéric Bichot has managed the family’s four estates and negociant arrangements.  Our staff notes that his 2012 Savigny-les-Beaune is medium-bodied, juicy and inviting.

Marc Deschamps – Final Call

Distributor note: “As is generally the case with this wine, the 2012 is all about minerals and stones, not zingy Sauvignon fruit.  Think of the kind of Sauvignon that could make you guess Chablis blind… I see why Deschamps releases this late, as it’s a powerful, serious expression and simply deserves to be held back a little longer.

“This wine absolutely brings to mind some of the greatest expressions of Loire Sauvignon Blanc I’ve ever had – wines from Edmond Vatan and Francois Cotat in nearby Sancerre.  Again, this wine is built around a mineral core and has plenty of natural density, not just acidity.”

Marc Deschamps Pouilly-Fume Les Champs de Cri 2012 750ML ($29.95) $24 special
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2.3-hectares parcel Champs de Cri in Les Loges produces the most complex, elegant and long-lived Fumé of the estate. From vines about 55 years old, the pale golden 2012 Pouilly-Fumé Champs de Cri was kept on the lees for several months more than the other cuvées of the domaine and it is released later. It is a very complex and tightly woven wine, which was totally closed but extremely promising when I tasted it in early August 2014. The nose disclosed most of all the extreme deep mineral foundation of this Fumé with subtle hints of citrons, bitter orange, straw, jasmine and elder flowers. On the palate this is a full-bodied, rich, concentrated and multilayered Pouilly-Fumé of great elegance and expression. It’s an aristocratic, extremely well-balanced, fresh and lingering monolith of natural beauty.” WA

Marc Deschamps Pouilly-Fume Vinealis 2012 750ML ($39.95) $33 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “In the best of vintages Marc Deschamps isolates the grapes from the oldest vines in the Champs de Cri vineyard (60+ years of age) for the Vienalis. These plants root deep in classic kimmeridgian marne soils and Deschamps vinifies the small crop of his selection in barrels. Both fermentation and élevage (with extensive lees contact) occur in small oak barrels of 1 to 5 years of age. The nose of the 2012 Pouilly-Fumé Vinealis certainly picks up the oak, but if you dedicate this bouquet just some minutes of your time – and believe me it’s worth to do so, all the more so if you managed to snatch one of the rare bottles – you discover the real character of this beautiful elegant Fumé. Lovely Physalis, peaches and nectarine aromas in the beginning are enriched with freshly stewed wild mushrooms served with flat-leaf parsley on a washed stone with a dash of citrus. Suddenly, the oak fades away and you discover a pure, highly elegant, and noble-structured and philosophic wine that might eliminate you from your environment and drag you in total into its matter. “Don’t just drink me, detect me,” the wines seems to say when you are already fully absorbed. Although this powerful wine is highly rich and complex it is a hymn to the freshness, elegance and balance of Pouilly-Fumé, whereas the intensity and length of fruit and minerality of the broad, rich and persistent 2012 is absolutely unique. I don’t think I had any better wine from this appellation and the wine was even more fascinating a week after I opened the bottle and put it back into the cool store.” SR

Brisk and racy, offering fresh red fruit and rose pastille flavors and a hint of blood orange. I might have guessed this to be pinot. Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2013 750ML ($19.95) $14 special, 36+ bottles available
Josh Raynolds – Vinous 91 points “(half fermented in stainless steel and the other half in French oak, followed by ten months of aging in French oak): Vivid purple. Fresh cherry, blackberry and incense on the highly perfumed nose. Lush, sweet and broad on the palate, offering fleshy blueberry and floral pastille flavors that turn spicier with air. Case-12 Bodegas Breca ‘Breca’ Garnacha Old Vines, Calatayud 2012 750ML ($179.95) $149 special, 2 cases available (that’s only $12.42/bottle!)
Bodegas Breca ‘Breca’ Garnacha Old Vines, Calatayud 2012 750ML ($17.95) $14 special, 5 bottles available
Robert Parker 91 points “The 2012 Breca from Calatayud is 100% old-vine Garnacha (from vines planted between 1925 and 1945) made from yields of less than one ton of fruit per acre. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then transferred to new to 3-year-old French oak casks for 21 months, this outstanding red is the poor man’s Priorat. Mineral notes of wet slate and gun flint are intermixed with blackcurrant, black cherry and cassis fruit in this dense, full-bodied, pure, lavishly rich, intense Spanish red. It is hard to believe what one can get at this price point if the importer and wine producer are committed to high quality.” RP

Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Lurid ruby color. Fragrant ripe cherry and red plum. Sappy and incisive, the palate offers bitter cherry and berry skin flavors, showing very good lift and energy. Fat-free, focused and brisk, with strong closing cut, fine-grained tannins and lingering berry skin and cherry pit notes.”

CVNE Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana ‘Imperial’ Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2008 750ML ($47.95) $29 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2008 Imperial Reserva is my favorite of the three Imperial Reservas that I tasted together as it has the perfect balance between ripeness, acidity and tannins, in a wine that is eminently elegant, but will require some time in bottle to gain complexity. The fruit leans more towards the red varieties (raspberries and strawberries), it is very spicy but the wood is almost fully integrated. Very balanced palate, with high-toned flavors that make it vibrant. Drink 2015-2021.” WA

Case-12 Bodegas Muga Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2011 750ML ($299.95) $236 special, 8 cases available (that’s only $19.67/bottle!)
Bodegas Muga Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2011 750ML ($24.95) $21.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 91+ points “The 2011 Reserva is mostly Tempranillo complemented with some 20% Garnacha, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. There are no stainless-steel vats at Muga, so everything is fermented in oak vats and this wine is then aged for one year in new French oak barrels and a further year in used ones (three to six years old), fined with egg white and bottled. It is a Rioja that mixes the traditional and modern character with ripe fruit and contains oak aromas that are quite spicy and have some toast and smoke that should integrate with a bit of time in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied, has clean flavors that are balanced with sweet tannins. This is easy to drink, pleasant but not banal, and delivers a lot for its price. An impressive half-million bottles are produced of this wine, which is sold as Crianza in Spain and as Reserva in the rest of the world. Year after year, one of the most reliable and affordable Reservas.”LG

Bodegas Olivares Altos de la Hoya Monastrell, Jumilla 2013 750ML ($14.95) $10.90 special, 19 bottles available
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 91 points “Glass-staining ruby. Deep pitched, seductive aromas of black and blue fruits, cola and candied violet are complicated by smoky mineral and licorice nuances. Smooth, sweet and focused in the mouth, offering sappy blackberry and cherry compote flavors and a hint of spicecake. The penetrating finish shows excellent focus, a floral-inflected persistence and an echoing mineral note.”

Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Reserva, Rioja DOCa 2006 750ML ($29.95) $21.90 special, 36 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “(100% tempranillo; aged for 30 months in American oak):  Ruby-red.  Sexy smoke- and spice-accented red fruit and floral pastille scents show impressive clarity and energy.  Smooth, sweet and expansive on the palate, offering intense cherry-cola and blackberry flavors and an exotic rose pastille quality.  Closes very long and sweet, with sneaky tannins and lingering spiciness.  These are far and away the freshest bottles from this historic bodega that I’ve ever tasted stateside.” ST

Teofilo Reyes, Ribera del Duero 2011 750ML ($29.95) $24 special, 24 bottles available
“Bodegas Reyes was founded by Juan Jose and Luis in 1994, under the supervision of his father, Teofilo Reyes, who hoped to bring some continuity from his 50 years of experience.% 100 Tempranillo. The wine is hand harvested and aged in French and American oak for 16 months. On the palate, wonderfully dense, layered dark fruit gives way to supple tannins and a nice, long finish. Notes of spice, oak, and anise compliment this well produced wine.  Great value at $24 per bottle, or our case-12 special for $21.58 each!” -Troy
