Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Vivid ruby-red. Deeply pitched dark berry preserve, cola and incense aromas show very good energy, with a smoky quality emerging as the wine opens in the glass. On the palate, juicy blackberry and cherry compote flavors are lifted and sharpened by a zesty mineral nuance and a hint of fresh flowers. Sweet vanilla and berry liqueur notes build on the finish, which is firmed by youthful, deftly integrated tannins. ”

WASHINGTON
Figgins Estate Red Walla Walla Valley 2011 ($119.95) $89 special
Stephen Tanzer 94+ points “(from vines planted at 1,500 to 1,750 feet; the first vintage made at Chris Figgins’ new facility; roughly 45% each cabernet sauvignon and merlot and the rest petit verdot): Good bright ruby. Cassis, black cherry and licorice aromas are lifted by a floral topnote. A juicy, intense wine of outstanding clarity and penetration, with superb harmonious acidity giving it an element of inner-mouth tension rare in Washington red wine. Really builds and echoes on the slowly mounting finish, where the noble tannins are hidden by fruit. This beauty should enjoy a slow and spectacular evolution in the bottle.”

CALIFORNIA
Frog’s Leap Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 ($59.95) $49 special
Vinopolnotes- The Rutherford AVA stretches from the benchland under Mt. St. John on the west of Hwy 29, two miles across the valley floor to its eastern reaches on the Vaca Mountains bordering the Silverado trail. Soils range from gravelly to sandy to loamy, and are well drained. While the area is a mishmash of soils, they are generally gravelly on the western bench, sandy nearest the Napa River, and contain some volcanic features on the eastern side. Wines made from grapes grown in this “benchland” area are said to exhibit “Rutherford dust,” shorthand for a dusty-berry-spicy element, along with a somewhat herbal flavor.
Opus One Proprietary Red Napa Valley 2011 ($259.95) $219 special
Antonio Galloni 92+ points (Vinous): “The 2011 Opus One may turn out to be one of the surprises of the year. A brilliant, precise wine, the 2011 impresses for its energy. Sweet floral and spiced notes lead to expressive dark red berries, mocha, anise and new leather in a brilliant Opus One. Readers will note the lower than normal presence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the 2011, which is typical for a year in which blenders play an important role. The blend is 71% Cabernet, 11% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot/8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Drink: 2016-2031. (Nov 2013)”
James Suckling 92 points “This is very aromatic and pretty with plum, cherry and currant aromas, plus hints of chocolate. It’s full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a clean, fresh finish. This is a subtly fruity, juicy red with a pretty texture. Drink or hold. For early drinking. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot, 9% petit verdot, 8% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. (5/15/14)”
Schrader Cellars LPV Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 ($399.95) $299 special
Robert Parker 96-98 points “There are 600 cases of the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard LPV. The best example I have seen of Cabernet Sauvignon from this vineyard to date, it offers lots of flowery, blueberry and blackberry fruit interwoven with notions of lead pencil shavings, loamy soil, unsmoked cigar tobacco, incense and forest floor. This tremendously complex, intense, full-bodied 2012 flirts with perfection as many of Schrader’s amazing wines do. Bravo!”
Schrader Cellars RBS Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012 ($499.95) $419 special
Robert Parker 96-100 points “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard RBS is one of the potential candidates for perfection. Half the crop was thinned out and the result is a wine with incredible aromas of lead pencil shavings, licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, roasted coffee beans and vanilla. The good news is there are 625 cases of this sensational wine.”

Jacquesson Extra Brut Cuvee 737 NV ($79.95) $69 special
Vinopolnotes – With Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs, and Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers in the Vallée de la Marne, the 737 is made entirely of Grands and Premiers Crus. It is a blend of 43% Chardonnay, 27% Pinot Noir and 30% Pinot Meunier. A majority of this wine is made from the 2009 vintage, with a balance of 2008 and reserve vintages.
Jean Vesselle Brut Blanc de Noirs Oeil De Perdrix NV ($69.95) $59 special
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(100% pinot noir from Bouzy): Light orange-pink. Complex, highly perfumed scents of dried strawberry, potpourri and smoky minerals. Broad and chewy in texture, offering bitter cherry and blood orange flavors and a touch of licorice. Acts like a red wine, flavor-wise, but shows excellent clarity and lift, as one would expect from a Champagne. Closes sappy and long, with strong thrust and lingering smokiness.”
Vilmart Grand Cellier d’Or Rubis Brut 2009 ($179.95) $149 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Vilmart’s 2009 Brut Premier Cru Grand Cellier Rubis is fabulous. A rich, deep rosé, the 2009 is all about texture. Layers of fruit open up in the glass in a silky, aromatically expressive Champagne loaded with class. The radiant, resonant style, so typical of the year, is on full display. The Grand Cellier Rubis remains one of the most polished, compelling wines in Champagne. The 2009 is another drop-dead gorgeous showing from Vilmart and proprietor Laurent Champs. The Grand Cellier Rubis is 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay.”
Vilmart Coeur De Cuvee Brut 2004 1.5LITER ($419.95) $379 special
Stephen Tanzer 95 points “Light, bright gold. Exotic aromas of poached pear, smoky minerals and iodine are complemented by a sexy floral nuance. On the palate, incisive, tangy flavors of candied citrus and orchard fruits, ginger and minerals gain flesh and weight with air. Finishes on a seductively sweet note, with outstanding juicy persistence and strong mineral cut and grip.”
Pierre Peters Brut Rose For Albane NV ($99.95) $89 special
Antonio Galloni 93 points “The NV Brut Rosé per Albane is drop-dead gorgeous. Perfumed, ethereal and beguiling, the Albane is both incredibly delicate and full of flavor. Sweet floral notes, red berries, mint and crushed rocks linger on the bright, crystalline finish. The long, brilliant finish leaves a lasting impression. The Albane is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Meunier, an unusual combination. This bottle was disgorged in March 2013.”
Pierre Peters Cuvee Speciale Chetillons 2007 1.5LITER ($319.95) $269 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “What a pleasure it is to taste the 2007 Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons. An absolutely impeccable Champagne, the 2007 is gorgeous today. Crushed flowers, sage, almonds, lemon peel and ripe, juicy pears inform the supple, resonant finish. In 2007, the Chétillons is a model of grace and finesse. This is the first vintage Rodolphe Péters made from start to finish, and he nailed it.”

Domaine de Ferrand Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012 ($69.95) $56 special
Wine Advocate 91-94 points “Moving to the Chateauneufs, and a blend of 95% Grenache, 2% Mourvedre, 2% Mourvedre and 1% Bourboulenc, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape is a fresh, elegant and medium to full-bodied effort that offers up notions of crushed flowers, sappy underbrush and licorice. Very fresh, yet with solid mid-palate depth and perfect balance, it should be approachable on release and have over a decade of longevity. Drink 2014-2024.”
Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012 ($79.95) $66 special
Wine Advocate 93-96 points “More backwards and tannic, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape (same blend as the 2012) was tight and structured at the time of this tasting (as was the 2011, which was much more approachable and open when I tasted it from a bottle in the U.S.), with serious pepper, herbs de Provence and assorted darker berry-styled fruit. Cutting a broad path across the palate, with full-bodied richness, bright acidity and edgy tannin, it should soften up over the next year and be reasonably accessible with short-term cellaring. A solid 12-15 year drink window sounds about right. Drink 2016-2027. Consistently producing lively, fresh and elegant efforts that never lack for structure or richness, Domain Charvin is run by the soft spoken and generous Laurent Charvin. The winemaking here is very traditional, with some stem inclusion and aging completely in tank.”
Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Girard 2012 ($49.95) $39 special
Wine Advocate 89-92 points “Almost identical, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Girard is a slightly tweaked blend of 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, 5% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Counoise, that’s aged in a combination of concrete, oak tanks and barrels. Voluptuous, textured and layered, with sweet black raspberry, licorice, spice and leafy herbs, it’s a medium to full-bodied, fruit-loaded effort to drink over the coming decade. Drink 2014-2024.”
Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Imperiale 2012 ($79.95) $66 special
Wine Advocate 93-95 points “A field blend of close to 95% Grenache (from 100+-year-old vines) that’s aged all in concrete, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale is one of the stars in the vintage. Offering up gorgeous Grenache character, with ripe blackberry, kirsch, licorice, old pepper and earth, it is a full-bodied, rich and voluptuously textured effort that possesses fantastic purity, loads of fruit and grippy tannin. It should be reasonably approachable on release, yet benefit from a handful of years in the cellar. Drink 2016-2027.”

Case-12 Brunier Domaine les Pallieres Gigondas Terrasses Du Diable 2010 ($479.95) $399 special (that’s only $33.25 / bottle)**
Wine Avocate 93 points “Slightly superior, revealing more minerality and a subtle, incremental building of flavor intensity, the 2010 Gigondas Terrasse du Diable offers lots of black raspberry, kirsch and floral characteristics along with an undeniable crushed rock minerality. Medium to full-bodied and elegant as well as impressively built, rich, pure and beautifully balanced, it can be enjoyed now and over the next 15 years.”
Henri Bonneau Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Des Celestins 2009 ($379.95) $319 special
Wine Advocate 95-98 points “The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Celestins might be the wine of the vintage and got a big “Wow” in the notebook. Thrillingly perfumed, with kirsch, currants, herbs de Provence, dried meats and spice-like aromas and flavors, it is an absolute knockout on the nose. This is all backed up by full-bodied richness in the mouth, and it possesses terrific mid-palate depth, layers of sweet tannin and a finish that pumps out plenty of sweet fruit. I don’t know when it will be bottled, but certainly, I was blown away by the wine.”

Luneau Papin Muscadet Terre De Pierre 2012 ($29.95) $24 special
John Gilman 94 points “This is a great site, with a unique geological composition of red igneous rock and the 2012 is a truly brilliant bottle of Muscadet, offering up a vibrant and magically complex bouquet of tart orange, lemon, ocean breeze, kaleidoscopic minerality, gentle leesiness, citrus zest and a nice touch of lemongrass in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, pure, full-bodied and very complex, with great cut and focus, a rock solid core and outstanding length and grip on the laser-like finish. The 2010 la Butte de la Roche was probably the finest young Muscadet I have ever tasted, and the 2012 is an awfully strong follow-up. 2014-2030+.”

Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco DOCG Ovello 2010 ($69.95) $59 special
Wine Advocate 96 points “Showing great persistency and length, the 2010 Barbaresco Ovello is an extremely elegant and refined expression with crushed flowers, forest fruit and strong mineral definition. The Ovello cru (at 300 meters above sea level) overlooks the Tanaro River valley where early morning fog banks appear and temperature shifts are very pronounced thus helping aromatic development of the wine. The results are ethereal and finessed. Drink: 2017-2035.”
Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco DOCG Albesani 2010 ($59.95) $51.90 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Cantina del Pino’s 2010 Barbaresco Albesani is another huge, powerful wine. Black cherries, smoke, licorice and asphalt hit the palate in a powerful, structured Barbaresco that is going to require some time. As always, the richness and depth of Albesani comes through, but in this vintage, there is also plenty of underlying structure to allow the 2010 to age gracefully for years.”
Massolino Barolo DOCG Margheria 2010 ($99.95) $79 special
Antonio Galloni 95 points “Iron, smoke, tar, plum and black cherry are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2010 Barolo Margheria. A deep, resonant wine, the Margheria captures an attractive middle ground in this vintage. It can be enjoyed with minimum cellaring because of its pliancy, but also has enough depth to age gracefully for years. Aromatic nuance, expressive fruit and fabulous balance are among the hallmarks in a Barolo that captures the essence of Serralunga. Violets, lavender and new leather flesh out on the inviting finish. This is also the deepest and darkest of the Massolino 2010s.” AG
Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Underbrush, rose, violet, black cherry, balsamic notes, cinnamon, mint, leather and Mediterranean herbs are just some of the sensations that emerge. The juicy fruit is balanced with energy and velvety tannins. It’s loaded with energy and finesse, and give it time to develop even more complexity. Drink 2020-2040.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA! The average listed price is $87 / bottle.
Massolino Barolo DOCG Parussi 2010 ($99.95) $79 special
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2010 Barolo Parussi hits its stride with an amazing bouquet that is as generous as it is complex and compelling. The wine boasts a dark ruby color with delicate amber highlights and shows a deep level of color saturation and richness. Its perfumes are redolent of sweet cherry, black fruit, dark licorice, cigar ash and wet earth. There’s a bright floral note of pressed red rose that lifts delicately as the wine warms in the glass. The meeting of the wine’s acidic component and its tannic firmness is absolutely seamless. Drink: 2017-2030.” WA
Wine Enthusiast 98 points “This bold wine is yet another impressive 2010 Barolo from Massolino. Powerfully structured, it delivers succulent black cherry flavors layered with black pepper, sage, tobacco, licorice, balsamic notes and grilled herbs. It’s superbly balanced but has youthful tension and an abundance of energy so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2020-2050.”

We have a special little gem we are featuring this holiday season, involving a different type of fruit, and one that will go great with all the traditional flavors we embrace this time of year. Snowdrift Cider Company released their first small production of ciders back in 2009, and although still considering themselves a ‘nano-cidery’, are slowly increasing production and have just recently been available in Oregon. The Snowdrift Orchard Select hard cider is a semi-dry cider that is incredibly balanced with stone fruits, a delicate richness, great acidity and a dry finish. Grab a few of these before we sell out for the holiday season. Cheers!
Snowdrift Orchard Select Cider NV ($17.95) $14 special
Producer Notes “This semi-dry cider is distinctly bright, rich and full of body. Bright rhubarb and summer peach flavors highlight a honeydew smoothness, while sweeter rainier cherry and golden raisin flavors lead into an aromatic almond floral finish. Pairs well with good company and sunny days–as well as food such as poultry, fish (salmon, trout, etc.), garden salads, cheese (brie, aged cheddar, etc.) and artisan breads with olive oil infusions.”

Champagne Tarlant
Just west of Epernay, in the heart of the Marne Valley lies the very special property of Tarlant Estate. Tarlant has a very strong focus in their relatively small and detailed production of Champagne. We often hear talk of ‘soil’ and ‘terroir’ having a large role in particular components and flavors of wine, especially when speaking of the wines from France. Tarlants approach is truly dependent on the tiny little parcels on which their estate lies, and the incredible variety of soils that are within each bit of land, providing natural elements for wines full of character and individuality. Organic vineyards that include 55 parcels located in the villages of Oeuilly, Boursault, St-Agnan and Celles-lès-Condé on 5 different types of soil; chalk, sparnacien (clay-limestone), sand, limestone, and small pebbles. The property’s vicinity to the Marne is a vital influence on creating a particular microclimate, being that it is at an aspect that faces to the North, unlike most vineyards in Champagne that are facing South.
The Tarlant Zero Brut has absolutely no dosage, which is quite the rarity in Champagne. Without any added sugar, it truly shows the grapes (equal parts Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir) and the soils in which they are coming from. The Tarlant Rose Zero Brut is the same idea with absolutely no dosage, but with a blend of 85% Chardonnay 15% Pinot Noir, showing both red and stone fruit components, vibrant acidity, great minerality and elegance. Tarlants Louis is an exceptional Champagne, a perfect celebratory bottle for rare moments and special occasions. Described as a, “Champagne of connoisseurs for connoisseurs”, this little gem is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are cask fermented, offering a wine full of complexity, richness, structure and balance.
Tarlant Zero Brut Nature NV ($59.95) $49 special
Antonio Galloni 91 points “The NV Brut Nature Ero is a fascinating wine. It shows plenty of richness, despite the non-dosage style. Pears, apple tart, pastry, hazelnuts and dried flowers are some of the many nuances that flow from this deep, textured Champagne. This is a fabulous showing. Now, with a full year of disgorgement, the wine is drinking absolutely beautifully. The Ero is equal parts Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from vineyards in the Vallee della Marne.”
The average listed price is $56/ bottle
Tarlant Rose Zero Brut Nature NV ($69.95) $59 special
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Tarlant’s NV Brut Nature Rosé is even better. All of the elements come together beautifully in the glass as this powerful, precise wine takes shape over time. The wine shimmers across the palate with layers of beautifully articulated, perfumed fruit, showing marvelous precision and balance. The Brut Nature Rosé is 90% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir based on 2006 with the addition of reserve wines.”
Tarlant Cuvee Louis Extra Brut NV ($99.95) $88 special
Antonio Galloni 94 points “Apricots, dried pears, spices, flowers, honey and hazelnuts meld together in the NV Cuvée Louis. Warm, toasty and resonant to the core, the 1999 is built on gorgeous breadth and pure volume. Readers who like rich, oxidative Champagnes will love the Cuvée Louis. This release is based on the 1999 vintage, with 15% reserve wine from the previous release (1998, 1997, 1996), equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.”

Sandhi Pinot Noir Rinconada, Santa Rita Hills 2012 ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94 points “From a vineyard just beside Sanford & Benedict, but further up the slope and with less top soil, the 2012 Pinot Noir Rinconada is thrilling stuff. Loaded with minerality, spice, earth and darker berry fruits, there’s a slight rusticity here, but I love the underlying structure and depth. Showing more floral notes with air, give it another year and it will dish out loads of pleasure through 2020.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2012 Pinot Noir Rinconada is deep, layered and vibrant to the core. Dark red cherry, smoke, game, blood orange and sage meld together in a structured, intense Pinot that needs at least another year or two in barrel for the tannins to soften. This is an impressive showing.”

Sandhi Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir, Santa Rita Hills 2012 ($69.95) $59 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 93+ points “Showing a streamlined, focused and straight feel, the 2012 Pinot Noir Sanford and & Benedict knocks it out of the park with its nose of underbrush, rose petal, red berry and cranberry-slanted aromatics. Still tight on the palate, it has a serious core of fruit and will benefit from another year in bottle and drink nicely through 2020.”
Dom Perignon Plenitude P2 Brut 1998 ($419.95) $379 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 98 points “Offers precision and finely detailed form, powered by an expansive palate of flavor. The layers of ripe crushed blackberry and glazed apricot fruit complement the saline-tinged minerality and oyster shell notes, graced by hints of pastry, honeycomb and exotic spice. Mouthwatering and persistent on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2030.”
James Suckling 97 points “A P2 release indicating it has been matured to the 2nd Plenitude, the middle stage of Dom Perignon’s three-phase life as defined by Richard Geoffroy. This is a wine with some real tension between complexity and freshness that makes for incredibly engaging drinking. The nose offers up a little white peppery edge from the pinot; oyster shell saline freshness, red florals, sweet smelling woody spices and brioche, spiced biscuits and subtle roasted coffee notes – impressively complex. The phenolics register on the palate as a discreetly mineral, saline character, there’s sorbet-like texture through the middle before finishing with comet-like line and length.”

Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Asili 2003 ($219.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “Medium red. Very ripe aromas and flavors of strawberry liqueur and smoke. Surprisingly sappy and fresh, with a sexy sweetness leavened by lively acidity. There’s a liqueur-like quality to this 2003 along with a creamy richness of texture. Features a rising, fresh finish rare for the vintage and fine, granular, building tannins.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA! The average listed price is over 25% higher at $126 / bottle.
Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Rabaja 2005 ($219.95) $149 pre-arrival special
Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2005 Barbaresco Rabaja is the densest and richest of these 2005 Barbarescos. Because it is aged in a slightly smaller cask, the wine shows an explosive personality along with some oak nuances that require bottle age to settle down. This muscular Barbaresco resonates on the palate with layers of spiced, mentholated dark cherries, minerals and licorice. It remains a dense, structured and primary wine in need of serious bottle age for the firm tannins to melt away. This, too, is a sublime wine from Bruno Giacosa. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025.”
Vinopolnotes– This is the lowest listed price in the USA! The average listed price is over 30% higher at $197 / bottle.
Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto 2003 ($179.95) $99 pre-arrival special
Stephen Tanzer & Wine Advocate 91 points “Moderately saturated medium red. Reticent nose hints at red fruit liqueur and marzipan. Sweet on entry, then quite firm in the middle, with fresh acids giving definition and penetration to this rather inexpressive wine. Today this is less rich and sweet than the Barbaresco Asili, but there’s enticing ripeness here and excellent lift on the firmly tannic finish. This really went into a shell in the glass and would appear to need at least five or six years of bottle aging.”ST

Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(90% tempranillo and 10% graciano): Deep ruby. Highly fragrant scents of redcurrant, cherry, dried rose and spicecake, with hints of smoke and pipe tobacco. Packs a punch, displaying very good vivacity to the cherry preserve and floral pastille flavors. Finishes sappy, focused and long, with silky tannins and lingering sweetness. This elegant wine is drinking well now but has the balance to age.”

Domaine Ostertag
Arriving Thursday Nov 13
A pioneer, a revolutionary winemaker, an environmentalist… so many terms can be used to describe André Ostertag, the owner and operator of his family’s 14 hectare Alsacian domaine. After training in Burgundy, he drastically improved estate practices by introducing such grape-growing and winemaking techniques as reducing yields and converting to biodynamic.
André Ostertag does not confine himself to the traditional Alsatian way of treating the varieties he has in his vineyards, producing 3 levels of wines; fruit-driven (Vins de Fruit), terroir-driven (Vins de Pierre) and time-driven. The Vins de Pierre is his most highly revered lineup, known for their extremely age-worthy qualities, and includes single-vineyard bottlings from the Fronholz vineyard, Heissenberg vineyard and the Muenchberg Grand Cru vineyard. Fronholz has white sand and quartz soils, and all varietals except the Pinot Gris are sourced from vines over 40 years old. These wines show the most minerality and acidity, and are more reserved in youth. Heissenberg is composed of pink sandstone and granite with an average vine age of over 25 years, producing wines that are more forward and exotic from this warmer site. The Grand Cru vineyard, Muenchberg, has volcanic soils. Named for the Cistercian monks that were the first to plant vines in the area, the vineyard produces wines of great elegance, purity and depth of flavors. Robert Parker calls Ostertag’s wines “some of the most distinctively delicious and thought-provoking wines in Alsace,” and he is not alone in considering Ostertag’s wines true works of art.

Wine Advocate 94 points “Ostertag’s 2011 Riesling Muenchberg mingles fresh, very ripe apple and pear with candied grapefruit and kumquat rinds, caramelized parsnip, caraway, and fresh ginger, all wreathed in peat-like and charred smokiness, and putting me in mind of a Riesling dosed with Gewurztraminer. There is an uncanny combination of body and high glycerol with brightness here, leading to a finish of exuberant juiciness, zesty cut, interactive complexity and formidable sheer grip. I would anticipate this meriting return visits though at least 2025.” WA

Weingut Karthauserhof Eitelsbacher Karthauserhofberg Schieferkristall Riesling Kabinett Feinherb, Mosel 2012 ($27.95) $19 staff pick special
“It’s a mouthful of a name, I’ll grant you that. This Kabinett is very light in style with fresh mint, and lemon zest aromas. Don’t let the 20g/L residual sugar fool you: the acidity and delicacy of the wine tricks you into thinking it is truly dry. It makes a great aperitif or pairing with oysters or light tapas.”

“A blend of Maccabeu , Roussane , Clairette and Grenache Blanc from soils of clay and chalky limestone. Biodynamically farmed, this blend produces a medium bodied white with rich expressions of fruit and vanilla at the start, finishing crisp and clean with notes of tart apple and lemon.”
Bodegas Muga 2010 Rioja Reserva Seleccion
Arriving December 2014
The history of Muga is one of tradition, family, and, last but certainly not least, oak. Isaac Muga Martinez and his wife Auro moved to the Rioja Alta region in 1932, hoping to open their own bodega large enough to rival the established wineries already in the area. Though Isaac did not live to fulfill this dream, his three children have made it a reality. In 1971, they built the large Muga bodega, complete with a tower and coopery. Oak is essential to the Muga tradition, whether it be tubs, casks, beams or pillars and is used throughout the winemaking process. Muga is one of only six estates in the world that owns its own cooperage and they import the oak directly from the United States and France. From their longstanding customs, Muga produces refined Riojas in both classic and modern styles. The Seleccion, offered on pre-arrival below, is from Muga’s lineup of “traditional” Riojas that also includes the Reserva and Gran Reserva, as opposed to the more modern style Torre Muga and Prado Enea. 70% Tempranillo, 20 % Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo (the Spanish cousin to Carignan) and 3% Graciano, this red is aged in specially made Muga oak casks for 28 months before it is fined, filtered, and bottle aged for an additional year before release.

Case-12 Bodegas Muga Rioja Seleccion Especiale 2010 ($499.95) $439 pre-arrival special (that’s only $36.58 / bottle!)**
Stephen Tanzer 93 points “(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; fermented in large oak vats and aged for 28 months in small French and American oak barrels of varying age): Inky purple. Flamboyant aromas of ripe berries, incense, potpourri, smoky oak and pungent minerals. Lush, fleshy and alluringly sweet, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that coat the palate. Smooth, seamless and impressively concentrated but also lively, with sneaky tannins giving shape to the long, spice-accented finish. ”
Bodegas Muga Rioja Rosado 2013 1.5LITER ($29.95) $26 special 1 rose magnum available
Bodegas Muga Rioja Blanco 2012 ($17.95) $14 special 9 bottles available
Stephen Tanzer 91 points “(90% viura and 10% malvasia, fermented in new French oak, where it then spends three months on its lees): Green-tinged gold. Powerful aromas of honeydew melon, orange zest and toasty lees. Sappy, round and concentrated, offering intense melon, citrus fruit and spicecake flavors and a slow-building vanilla quality. Finishes smooth and long, with mounting spiciness and a touch of fennel.”
Bodegas Muga Rioja Reserva 2009 ($26.95) $21.90 special 3+ cases available
Stephen Tanzer 92 points “(70% tempranillo, 20% garnacha, 7% mazuelo and 3% graciano; aged for 24 months in French and American oak): Brilliant ruby. Black raspberry and smoky oak scents are lifted by enticing mineral and spicecake notes. Dense, supple and deep, with intense flavors of black raspberry, mocha and vanilla. Very full, velvety wine, finishing with smooth, ripe tannins and a vibrant red berry quality.”
Wine Advocate 91 points “So we moved on to the reds with the 2009 Reserva, a vintage where they harvested quite late and they compare to 2005, a powerful year. The blend is 70% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho (they use the masculine form of the name here), 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from old terraced vineyards in the lowest part of the Oja valley where the river meets the Ebro. The grapes are fermented with their natural yeast in old oak wooden vats for 20 days with daily pumping-over and aged for two years in barrels, the first year in new ones, and the second year in used ones. The young nose is dominated by dark fruit aromas intermixed with notes of orange rind, licorice, Chinese ink and smoked peat. The palate shows some grainy tannins denoting a young but tender wine, with good intensity and acidity, ideal to have with food. ..Very Rioja. Drink 2014-2020.”
Bodegas Muga Rioja Prado Enea 2005 ($69.95) $49 special 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2005 Prado Enea Gran Reserva spends 36-months in oak, nine months in new oak after which it is racked into American oak that is ‘semi-new’ (i.e. a new barrel that is ‘broken in’ with a wine beforehand). It has an unashamedly opulent bouquet of primal, ripe, boysenberry, mulberry, dark chocolate and crushed violets that blossom with aeration. The palate is full-bodied with crisp acidity cutting through the pure blackberry and cassis fruit. It has wonderful focus and intensity, though the finish demonstrates convincing composure. This is an outstanding Gran Reserva whose silky texture will instantly win you over. Drink 2013-2030+”
Il Poggione Brunello Di Montalcino 2007 ($89.95) $59 special 9 bottles available
Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino is flat-out sexy. Layers of dark red fruit caress the palate in this round, voluptuous Brunello. Sweet roses, violets, mint and spices appear later, adding further complexity. The 2007 boasts striking inner perfume, radiant fruit and silky, super-refined tannins. Readers are going to have a hard time keeping their hands off this extraordinary wine. As great as the 2007 is today, it will be even better in a few years’ time. This is a fabulous showing from Il Poggione. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2037.”
