 “There’s a problem with the 2009 vintage in Burgundy.  It’s too attractive. So attractive that some UK merchants have already sold their allocations of the most sought-after wines. The good news, however, is that there are many delicious wines among the less famous producers and more humbly ranked vineyards. ” – Jancis Robinson

Historically, vintages on the “nines” have produced some memorable harvests—years like 1999, 1989, 1969, 1959 and 1949 were all heralded for their extraordinary taste. 2009 keeps this streak going, a beautifully ripe vintage that delivered stellar quality for both red and white wines.

The summer of 2009 began with a very different feel to it compared to its immediate predecessors. The weather was much warmer in 2009 in Burgundy, with considerably more sun than any other year in the previous six. April had been showery, with May warm and dry. It was a splendid summer; from the middle of May onwards the sun shone. Flowering at the beginning of June was rapid, setting the stage for generous yields.

No typhoons or roaring temperatures, no disease or rampant weather, everything ticked along very nicely. As it never can be, not all was totally perfect. Hail strikes the vineyards of Côte d’Or most years and 2009 was no exception.  There were May hailstorms scattered through the south, affecting Morey-Saint-Denis, the southern end of Gevrey-Chambertin, as well as the Mâconnais. Fine weather in June with occasional heat spikes turned much more variable in July with some heavy storms, giving rise to fears of mildew, but fortunately caused no real damage. By and large, winemakers could not have asked for better weather conditions throughout the whole season.

Obliging weather continued from mid-July onward, with vines looking good and the grapes healthy. August was glorious and the sun shone for the rest of the month and straight through to an early harvest. Starting towards the first week of September, by the 14^th harvest was fully under way in most vineyards. September was warm with a drying north wind, preserving acidity and contributing to healthy fruit and very little need for sorting. Grapes were harvested under clear skies, as vintners picked swiftly to maintain the balance and acidity in their wines.

This is not a vintage of village highs and lows across the Côte d’Or, as only the few vineyards hit hard by hail saw a reduction in yields. The health of the grapes was exceptional, without a trace of the rot that so often threatens the vineyards of Burgundy. 2009 was a vintage that delivered both quality and quantity. With such healthy fruit, the rigor of selection was not an issue, as is so often the case. This shines through in wines with excellent fruit quality from both the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.

Ripe, elegant and classic; 2009 is a lovely vintage. Most of the reds are rich, satiny and vibrant, with delicious red fruit; the whites juicy, aromatic, and approachable. These wines are made on their balance, as the best find a beautiful harmony of acidity, tannin, and concentration. Drinking lovely now, these wines have great ageing potential as well, living up to the high expectations set by the preceding “9” vintages with sumptuous, supple reds and luscious whites.

A clean, vibrant finish rounds things out nicely. The 2009 is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. Anticipated maturity: 2011- 2019.”

Opulent on entry, then penetrating and tight in the middle, with remarkably complex flavors of lemon, licorice, chlorophyll, tarragon and dill. A large-scaled but wonderfully fine-grained premier cru with superb length. Leaves behind a scent of licorice in the retronasal passage. This will offer early accessibility, but I’d hold rather hold my bottles available for seven or eight years.”

Stephen Tanzer 95 points “Straw-yellow. Soil-driven aromas of flinty, petrolly minerality, oyster shell and menthol. Broad, silky and suave yet with terrific energy and sappiness to the flavors of lemon, lime and wet stone. Less detailed today than the Preuses, but the slowly building, palate-saturating finish has to be one of the longest of the vintage. This wine, too, shows its great site more than it does the very warm 2009 vintage. For Chablis connoisseurs.”

Stephen Tanzer 95 points “Knockout nose combines lavender, white pepper, violet, menthol and crushed stone, along with a whiff of baked bread. Superripe and seamless yet with terrific cut to its sweet stone fruit and stony mineral flavors. The explosive saline, stony finish is almost painful today.  This will become even more minerally with a few years of bottle aging. A beauty, and even more impressive than a sample I tasted last year. A great example of Preuses that transcends the vintage, this wine spent a bit of time in barrique, then was kept in vat until it was bottled in January of this year.”

Boasts terrific density and sucrosite but with excellent acid backbone and firm minerality providing lift and shape. Best today on the long finish, which features palate-staining red grapefruit and crushed stone flavors. These 50-year-old vines are planted in deep soil, but there’s a lot of minerality in the subsoil, notes Hervet. Offers superb potential, but the 2008 may be even better.”

John Gilman 95+ points”The 2009 Jadot Montrachet (which hails from the Chassagne side of the vineyard, by the way) is also exceptional. The nose offers up a great and compelling mélange of apple, white peach, lemon, great minerality, floral tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and superbly structured, with a rock solid core of fruit, beautiful focus and balance, impeccable grip and a very long, racy and refined finish. Mint and minerals add complexity on the focused, textured finish. The 1er Cru was bottled in January 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.”

An ultra-fresh and distinctly earthy nose offers up a cool nose of red pinot fruit that introduces rich, intense and mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess buckets of dry extract that buffer well the otherwise very firm tannic spine on the impressively long, chewy and mouth coating finish. This is definitely worth considering.”

The textured, concentrated, broad-scaled and overtly muscular flavors possess excellent detail and a fine-grained minerality on the firm but not aggressively tannic and mouth coating finish. This powerful effort is finer than I usually find it though to be sure, there is plenty of muscle present.”

Pure, intense and mineral-inflected middle weight flavors possess good mid-palate concentration and a truly lovely mouth feel as the class of Vosne is immediately evident as the altitude of Beaux Monts as this is not nearly as ripe as any number of these ’09s. The finish is focused and still relatively tight with a lovely sense of verve. Overall, this is more a hypothetical blend of 2008 and 2009 as there is more obvious acid support and while it’s not as rich or opulent as many ’09s, I quite like this for its purity of expression and overall harmony.”

Prieur’s Clos de Vougeot is rarely top flight given the position of the vines yet in years like 2009 where position with the Clos is less important, an excellent wine can be fashioned and such is the case with this one.”
