Dominus

Christian Moueix, proprietor of the legendary Château Petrus in Pomerol founded Dominus in Napa Valley. His vision has shaped Dominus into the force it is today. Despite its French heritage, the wine is defiantly California in tone and style, combining waves of rich fruit and beautiful aromatics with enough tannin to ground the wine. Practicing both dry and organic farming, Christian Moueix’s Dominus produces one of the most terroir expressive wines in the United States.

The resulting wines are iconic: avidly collected by enthusiasts who give the bottles pride of place in their cellars. Don’t miss a great opportunity to pick up your new statement bottle, or to back-fill your collection! These illustrious gems won’t disappoint, whether on display in your cellar or open on your table.

“Dry farming, gentle extractions and minimal use of new French oak are some of the cornerstones of the approach employed by proprietor Christian Moueix and winemaker Tod Mostero in crafting these exquisitely beautiful Cabernets.” -Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Failla

Ehren Jordan (a longtime winemaker at Turley) founded Failla in the late 1990s after working with Helen Turley at Marcassin and seeing the quality of the cool climate wines from the Sonoma Coast. Though today the winery is located along the Silverado Trail in Napa, the grapes hail from cooler sites. Alongside the gorgeous wines produced from his estate holdings in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA, he sources fruit from some of the West Coast’s finest high elevation and cool sites, including in our backyard at Evening Land’s esteemed Seven Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills.

The wines are naturally fermented and the Chardonnay is allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation. The resulting wines are Old World in style, and best described by Robert Parker as “all elegant, cool climate, finesse-styled wines.”

“Today, with over 30 acres under cultivation, Failla stands as a benchmark for cool-climate winemaking in California. Through Ehren’s hands-on farming and minimalist winemaking style, Failla continues to inspire wine enthusiasts worldwide with exceptional wines that convey the essence of California’s most captivating regions.” -Skurnik Wines

Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“The flagship 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot brought up in 40% new French oak. With an essence of Cabernet-like character in its darker currants, green tobacco, cedar, graphite, and floral aromas and flavors, this gorgeous wine is full-bodied and has bright yet integrated acidity, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s just gorgeously put together and a magical, flawless wine. It’s going to take a decade to hit maturity but will evolve for 40-50 years in cold cellars. It is as good as it gets in classic, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon!”
Wine Spectator 97 points “This is tightly packed, with sleek, pure, driven notes of cassis, plum reduction and blackberry puree allied to an iron spine, while subtle alder, juniper, sweet bay leaf and tobacco notes peek in throughout. Very fine-grained, but impressively sturdy in feel, with a long, lingering note of iron piercing the finish. For the cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2040.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $319, that’s $303.05 at 5% off and $287.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Independent 100 points
“Composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Dominus was harvested from September 29 to October 10. It was aged in 40% new oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, the nose slowly unfurls to unveil beguiling floral notes of candied violets and rose oil over a core of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and plum preserves, giving way to notions of licorice, Indian spices, iron ore, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with taut, muscular black fruit layers, intertwined with gorgeous floral and exotic spice accents, and framed by firm, finely grained tannins with seamless freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Tightly coiled with so much latent energy waiting to explode, this is a spectacular expression of the vintage and Napanook vineyard. Still tightly coiled, give it a good 6-7 years in the cellar before broaching, and allow it a few hours in a decanter if consumed before 2032.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $349, that’s $331.55 at 5% off and $314.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“Aromas of blackcurrants, black cherries, hints of graphite, wet earth, and lavender. Sandalwood. Full-bodied with an impressive and refined structure that runs deep and vertical in the wine. Chewy. Hints of chocolate and hazelnut at the end. Needs five or six years to soften.”
The Wine Independent 96 points “A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Dominus has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of baked blackberries, preserved plums, and kirsch, with suggestions of Indian spices, sandalwood, potpourri, and black truffles, plus a ferrous hint. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture with just enough freshness to support the generous fruit, finishing long and oh-so-spicy. Yum!”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95 points “An excellent wine, even if not a great Dominus, the 2020 Dominus delivers waves of dark fruit—think predominantly cassis. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, it’s full-bodied and richly textured, perhaps a bit warm and open-knit because of the summer’s heat, but with a long, velvety finish attractively tinged with mocha and dark chocolate.”

Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $359, that’s $341.05 at 5% off and $323.10 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
Dominus Estate Christian Moueix, Napa Valley 2021 1.5L Displayed Price: $789, that’s $749.55 at 5% off and $710.10 at 10% off, 2 magnums in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“One of the legendary Dominus, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is unquestionably in the same league as the 2018, 2016, 2015, 2013, 2010, and 1991, and to my mind, wine simply doesn’t get any better. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as an incredible perfume of blackcurrants, crushed stone, cedar pencil, smoke tobacco, and baking spices, it’s rich, full-bodied, and voluptuously textured, with ripe yet building tannins. It reminds me slightly of the 2010 (maybe the 2013), and I suspect it will have a similar evolution. Hide bottles for 7-8 years, and it will evolve gracefully for 30+ years. Hats off to the team of Christian Moueix and director Tod Mostero.”

Failla Seven Springs Vineyard Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now

Wine Enthusiast 92 points “This biodynamic fruit has been fermented and aged in a mix of concrete egg and oak barrels, 10% new. The flavors have the wild feral character that suggests native yeasts were used, and that mix of fruit and flower and notes of pollen and spice and certain unidentifiable herbs makes this a wine to contemplate rather than pound down.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 95 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Platt Vineyard shows all the translucent finesse and nuance that is so typical of wines from this site. Lemon peel, chalk, mint white pepper and crushed rocks all run through this finely sculpted, delineated Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. This is such a gorgeous wine.”

Winery Note
“Aromatically the wine has notes of bramble, tart blackberry, cigar box, Asian spice, and black tea compliment a balanced tannin structure. This wine will age in a cellar for years to come. On the palate, there is a hint of riper fruit flavors, as well as restrained tannins that showcase just how cellar-worthy this bottle is.”

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 96 points
“The 2019 Syrah Estate Vineyard is an elegant supremely classy wine. Sage tobacco mint black pepper and lavender lead into a core of beautifully layered dark blue/purplish fruit. Silky and polished the Estate Syrah is an absolute delight to taste. I loved it.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:

Bruno Giacosa

Giacosa is one of the Piedmont’s most famous producers, celebrated for the quality and longevity of the fruit. Only bottled in the best years—the estate is so picky they skipped the 2006 and 2010 vintages—these are some of the finest Barbarescos bottled. This red, crafted from the famed Asili vineyard, needs a few more years in the cellar to flesh out. Though recent CellarTracker reviews show it’s already tantalizing.

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa Asili, Barbaresco DOCG 2019 750ml Was $289, Now $219, 2 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 98 points
“Sweet and succulent aromas of tangerines, freshly cut ripe strawberries, cherries and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate with sleek and dense tannins that run the length of the wine and then fan out into a dense, vivid finish of fruit. It’s chewy and seriously structured with finesse and energy. Silky texture. This needs at least four or five years to come together and open. Try after 2027.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “With the white label, the 2019 Barbaresco Asili is a wine of exceptional clarity and focus. That brightness is applied to the bouquet and the mouthfeel alike, where the wine feels streamlined, elegant and tight. Asili is redolent of wild fruit, violets and candied orange peel. This wine was bottled in 2021 and needs a few more years in glass before it really starts to unwind and soften.”
