Elio Grasso

“…As has been the case for a number of years, Grasso’s Barolos sit at a very high level within the hierarchy of Piedmont’s top estates… There seems to be no limit where this small family-run estate can go from here.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The wines that Elio Grasso’s son, Gianluca, has been making over the last decade and a half have catapulted the estate into the very top tier of Piemontese producers.  These are Barolos that are compelling, thrilling wines; made in a style which combines modern and traditional techniques into something very much the estate’s own.

The Ginestra Casa Maté is a bit more structured, built for a longer time in the cellar, and the Gavarini Chiniera is the earlier drinker, slightly more delicate of the pair.

Elvio Cogno

Elvio Cogno put the Ravera cru on the map. Born and raised in Novello, the village associated with the famous vineyard, Elvio comes from a long line of grape growers in the region but was the first to turn the dream of winemaking into a reality. For years, he collaborated with Marcarini (including crafting the legendary 1964 vintage from the Brunate vineyard, one of the first Barolos released as a single vineyard).

In 1990, he purchased Cascina Nuova, an under-performing but historic estate, and started making classically-styled wines under his own name from the Ravera cru.

His masterpieces elevated the region as a whole, no easy task for an already famous region. No wineries in Novello have surpassed the well-deserved fame of Elvio Cogno. Though the original master passed away in 2016, the estate is in the able hands of his daughter and son-in-law, Nadia Cogno and Valter Fissore (winemaker since 1996). From their entry level “Cascina Nuova” Barolo up to the Riservas from the choicest holdings, these are wines that will appeal to every lover of Barolo.

Luigi Einaudi

Founded in 1897 by Luigi Einaudi, this is a deeply historic estate. Einaudi rose to fame as a politician, eventually becoming the first democratically elected President of the Republic of Italy in 1948. He purchased the estate while working as a university professor and never missed a harvest. He sold his grapes at first, waiting nearly twenty years before building a winery.

Today, the estate is still highly respected. It owns over 60 hectares of vines spread across twelve properties. Although the bulk of production are Dogliani Dolcettos, the Barolos are where the craft winemaking shines. The original property is at the Terlo cru, where the single-vineyard Costa Grimaldi Barolo is sourced from. This site is almost 1,000 feet above sea level with soils rich in carlcareous marl. Their holdings in the cru of Cannubi also produce shining examples of Barolo admired for their longevity in the cellar.

Elio Grasso Ginestra Casa Maté, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 8 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“From a vineyard located across from Gavarini Chiniera, this is a slightly more robust and concentrated wine. The 2018 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté sources its fruit from a position at a slightly lower elevation with a bigger component of clay in the soils. The south and southeast-facing hillside is also more open to the horizon. These conditions give the Ginestra Casa Maté a broad texture and rich flavors of black and purple fruits. The wine is compact with dense texture that will relax over the next 10 years of age.”

Elio Grasso Gavarini Chiniera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The Gavarini Chiniera vineyard is shaped like an amphitheater with thick forests at the back (which protects from cold air currents) and sandy chalk soil at 380 meters in elevation. This is a special site, and the Elio Grasso 2018 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is always one of Grasso’s most easily recognized wines. This vintage is exceptionally bright and vibrant with lifted tones of cherry, plum, blue flower and sweet blood orange. Those primary notes are framed by sensations of dusty white mineral. This mid-weight wine exhibits the deep elegance that was achieved in this vintage.”

“Floral aromas of rose and iris mingle with red berry and tilled earth on this perfumed red. Elegantly structured, the vibrant palate offers juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry and star anise before a savory, almost salty finish. Taut, refined tannins and bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink through 2030.”

Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“This is a medium-bodied Nebbiolo from a hot vintage with a ruby-tinged appearance. The 2017 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice shows generous inner fiber and richness with dried cherry, blackberry, plum and dark spice. Fruit for this wine comes from a beautiful amphitheater of vines with the perched town of Novello high up on the skyline. I love the especially smooth and soft quality to what is a powerful and lasting wine. Only 3,500 bottles were made.”

“The 2017 Barolo Ravera makes a statement with its intense aromas of licorice, kirsch, pipe tobacco, and spice. Revealing a balanced and chiseled structure, the palate conveys dried raspberry, blood orange, and dried herbs. A great wine from the 2017 vintage, it feels like it will hold up to the test of time. Drink 2024-2042.”

Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 97 points
“Cellar Selection. Enticing scents of rose, iris, perfumed berry and an earthy whiff of truffle shape the fragrant nose on this dazzling wine. The delicious, full-bodied palate boasts structure and a weightless elegance, delivering juicy Marasca cherry, cherry compote, cinnamon and star anise. Taut polished tannins and fresh acidity provide balance and an elegant structure. It’s already irresistible but will also age well for years. Drink 2022–2035.”

Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“Intensely fragrant, this offers enticing scents of iris, violet and rose that mix with perfumed berry and botanical herbs. It’s loaded with finesse and flavor, doling out raspberry compote, crushed Morello cherry, licorice and a hint of mocha while taut, fine-grained tannins provide support. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2023–2035.”

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Nei Cannubi, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is another terrific wine in this range from Einaudi. There is an effortless, gracious quality to the Cannubi that is impossible to miss. Expressive aromatics meld into a core of creamy, exquisitely layered Cannubi red-toned fruit. Sweet red cherry, red plum, rose petal, mint and blood orange emerge, but only with great reluctance. The 2018 is pretty closed right now, but that won’t be an issue in another few years’ time.”

Poderi Luigi Einaudi Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi, Barolo DOCG 2015 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“Compared to the Cannubi cru, the 2015 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is much more structured and rich. At 45 years old, these are the estate’s oldest vines at work (the youngest ones are used for the Barolo Ludo), producing a tannic but nicely balanced and approachable Barolo. There are strongly present earth tones in this vintage, such as freshly tilled soil, and as it opens you’ll discover more sweet spice and chocolate as well.”

Barr-Eden Estate ‘Dreams of Gold’ Mengler’s Hill Shiraz, Eden Valley 2020 750ml Was $39, Now $33, 15 bottles in stock now
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 90 points
“A new addition to the lineup, the 2020 Dreams of Gold Shiraz comes from relatively young vines, planted in 1997 and 2013. Aged in older French oak, it boasts scents of “Eden Valley garrigue”—notes that suggest eucalyptus, bay leaf and wild thyme—set against a backdrop of blueberries. Less intense and concentrated than the other bottlings, it’s still medium to full-bodied, suave and silky in feel, with a clean, mouthwatering finish and a soft dusting of tannins. Barr-Eden Estate is the new name for the Love Over Gold partnership between Tim Howser, Joel Mattschoss, Pierre-Henri Morel and Michael Twelftree. Morel is the general manager of Two Hands and Howser and Twelftree are owners of Two Hands, while Mattschoss is a grape grower, with vines on Mengler’s Hill.”
