Knoll

In the wine region of Wachau in Austria, Weingut Knoll occupies some of the country’s most celebrated vineyards. As a leading member of the Wachau Nobilis Districtus (an illustrious organization of the top Wachau winemakers), the winery is heralded by critics, somms, and collectors as one of the finest. Quality is the focus to best capture the individual expressions of their famed parcels along the Danube River.

Across fifteen hectares, Riesling and Grüner Veltiner vines are cultivated by third-generation members of the Knoll family: Emmerich III oversees the cellar and August is head of vineyard work. The family’s history growing grapes in the region dates as far back as 1379.

The estate produces over twenty-five cuvees each year to highlight the unique microclimates. Rieslings are planted mostly on granite bedrock, while Grüner plantings tend to be found higher up the banks of the Danube on granite and loess soils.

On the technical side, if you’re less familiar with Austrian wine classification systems, know that “Ried” indicates a single vineyard and comes before the name of the vineyard on the label (ie: Ried Loibenberg). “Federspiel” indicates a wine with between 11.5% and 12.5% alcohol. This style tends to be lighter in body and can be less concentrated. “Smaragd” wines have at least 12.5% alcohol. Though all of these wines are dry, Smaragd wines tend to have a fuller body, richer texture, and more impact. Smaragd is the highest quality level under the Wachau classification.

The wines of Knoll are marked with beautiful textural qualities and layered aromatics. They represent some of Austria’s finest and one of the best values in the world for distinguished whites. We’re excited to have them in the shop, and thrilled to share them to you on our three-day sale, starting now.

“Very racy and vibrant with aromas of summer meadows, green and yellow apples plus a touch of pepper. This is at the lower limit of medium-bodied but has a healthy structure, the fine tannins neatly underlining the discreet fruit. Excellent balance and good length. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll Grüner Veltliner Ried Kreutles Federspiel 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 90 points
“The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Kreutles is harvested at the foot of the Loibenberg, looking southeast, on eroded deposits of weathered gneiss mixed with loam and sand. Gentle notes of sage crushed with white miso and salt are imbued with yeastiness. More air brings notes that hint at wild carrot greens. The slender body rounds out on the mid-palate, presenting a yeasty, savory, herbal richness laced with lemon and backed with lemon pith. This is slender, structured, savory and svelte. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2023-2035).”

Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 93 points
“Plenty of mirabelle and bergamot fruit fill out the ripe and structured palate that’s at the upper end of medium-bodied. Long, quite firm finish for this category with a ton of dried herb and tobacco leaf character. Drink or hold.”
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 92 points “The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Trum is also at the foot of the Loibenberg, with weathered gneiss soils deposited from the Mentalgraben—a deep gully. Yeast on the nose is imbued with pepper and some citrus. The taut, bright palate sprays with zesty lemon freshness and brings the full load of white pepper, dispersed against a yeasty backdrop. Lovely stoniness peeks through. Pepper and lemon define the subtle finish. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2023-2035).”

“This is rich, yet elegant, with loads of white raspberry, sweet pea, citrus oil and dried sage. It shows a bit of viscosity, with powerful spice notes that carry through to the long finish, along with plenty of macadamia nut and herbs. It is brilliantly harmonious already, but this will reveal much more with the years to come. Best after 2025.”

“Fabulous aromas and flavors of oolong tea and vanilla bean open up this complex white, before flavors turn to pineapple, grapefruit and savory mineral details on the palate. It is more intense than powerful, with a vivid structure and long aftertaste. This is an exquisite Grüner that will make you rethink the category. Best after 2025.”

“Full stone fruit aromas and a touch of ripe melon for a dry riesling that’s so sleek and racy. Wonderful balance in spite of the high acidity, giving this barely medium-bodied wine so much energy. Very long, samurai sword-like finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.”

Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“Very well-knit, this stylish and complex white wine features a seductive character and a multilayered profile. Waves of flavors come at you, unravelling lemon curd, baked peach, roasted pineapple and savory mineral. Intense spice and geranium notes emerge as this becomes electric towards the finish. It keeps gliding on the aftertaste, begging for sashimi to pair with. Best after 2025.”

“This is a showstopper, with effusively floral aromas that are followed by rich and concentrated flavors of apricot, peach and Jonagold apple. It is gloriously velvety in texture, with powerful acidity the keeps all elements intact. Layers keep unwrapping, as you are hit with more nuances of fruit and mineral, that haunt you to the long, lingering finish. Best after 2025.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:

Guy Charlemagne

Situated in the most famous village in the Côte des Blancs (Mesnil-sur-Oger) is the grower Champagne house of Guy Charlemagne. This producer is special, turning out artisanal, traditionally structured and refined Champagnes using ancient vines grown in some of the most sought-after terroir in the world.

The Charlemagne family has been making wine in Mesnil-sur-Oger since 1892, five generations bringing new breath to their land, while continuing the tradition of producing world class Champagne. Per Peter Liem, this is a grower to hunt for, especially their top bottling, Mesnillésime, which is “a vintage-dated blanc de blancs from Charlemagne’s oldest vines in Le Mesnil: like all of his wines, it’s brisk and racy, although it has a layered depth of fruit and a prominent chalkiness to counter its high acidity.” This cuvee is made from 100% Chardonnay hand-harvested from sixty-year-old vines grown in the chalky, limestone soil of Mesnil-sur-Oger. Champagne expert and author Richard Juhlin writes that the “Mesnillésime is a wine for every serious collector,” and goes on to note that Guy Charlemagne “is a grower to watch with the greatest respect in the future.”

We’re lucky to have a strong connection with a local importer that simply adores the Champagne estate as much as we do. We have just a smidge left of the 2014 vintage, a charming year just entering its prime drinking window, per Anne Krebiehl MW, of Vinous, whose recent review underscores its food-friendly and delicious nature.

Guy Charlemagne Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Brut, Champagne 2014 750ml Was $119, Now $99 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 93 points
“The 2014 Extra Brut Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from on average 60-year-old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, vinified in oak with blocked malolactic fermentation. Notes of dried corn husk and salty maize meal on the nose take turns with yellow apple on the nose. The oak is apparent in savoriness rather than vanilla and a certain roundness on the body, beautifully handled. The mousse is still bright and sprightly, highlighting saltiness and fresh apple equally. This has an assertive personality, and comes across as a muscular, toned blanc de blancs, bracing at first, then relaxing into a warm smile. The umami finish can absolutely take on food.”
