Weingut Gunther Steinmetz
Stefan and Sammie Steinmetz’s excellent cuvees first landed on our shelves in 2022. As purveyors of one of the largest, deepest, and finest collection of German Rieslings in the United States, it’s pretty hard to impress us. But impress, they did.
Their wines are from incredibly steep terrain along the banks of the Mosel on vines grown without fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides. Their environmentally-friendly mindset is carried into the winery, where the wines are fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and without additives or animal proteins (often found in fining agents). Their commitment to organic viticulture on challenging, steep slopes and minimal intervention winemaking yields wines of extraordinary concentration and breathtaking character.
Brauneberger Juffer is easily the most famous vineyard they work with, and one of the greatest in the Middle Mosel, renowned for centuries for its incredible wines from its slate and sandy soils.
Across the estate, the vineyard parcels they work with are impressively steep and difficult to farm. (Be sure to check out the winery’s gorgeous and informative vineyard map.) The dedication shows in the glass, resulting in concentrated and breathtaking wines.
The resulting wines are shockingly delicious. And, despite hailing from some of Europe’s best and oldest terroir, our selections all clock in at under $50/bottle, which is near criminal when compared to what Burgundy and even Alsace get away with for their great whites. This makes our three-day sale almost embarrassing for how inexpensive these beauties are. The whites range from bone dry to nobly sweet, though lean towards dry in their respective categories. The Pinot Noirs are equally exciting and well-priced (try finding a single-vineyard Oregon Pinot that’s slumbered in DRC barrels for under $40/bottle). So, don’t let the low prices scare you off – these are highly respected, delicious wines that deserve center stage on your table and a generous footprint in your cellar.
“If you’ve never heard of a winery called Gunther Steinmetz, we suggest you look it up… Senior Editor Stuart Pigott first met Stefan Steinmetz, 42, of the Günther Steinmetz estate in Brauneberg/Mosel just over a decade ago and his wines were already very good then with a distinctive style. But he said that nothing prepared him for the recent tastings of the Steinmetz 2019s. He was blown away by the quality.” –James Suckling

We offer eight in-stock Steinmetz options on sale now, including:
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Dhroner Hofberg Riesling Trocken 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $29.50, that’s $28.03 at 5% off and $26.55 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 95 points “This properly dry 2022 Mosel riesling has a wealth of stone fruit aromas, but also notes of grapefruit, Amalfi lemon and fresh almonds. However, in contrast to many wines from this site, there’s a compact core and the wine has impressive drive at the bold and spicy finish. Limited production. Very good aging potential, but can be drunk from release.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett Feinherb 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 93 points “Flinty and yeasty nose, but the white tree fruit aromas quickly blast through. Racy and structured, the balance barely off-dry. So much character and depth. Very much a wine for the dining table! Drink or hold.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Kabinett 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 97 points “Some people say that Riesling Kabinett must be sleek and very acidic, but this wine shows why this is narrow-minded. Fabulous nose of white flowers, ripe pear and white peach, then on the seriously concentrated palate this is so succulent and so precise you don’t want to think about anything else! Almost perfect balance at the long super-silky finish. From 60-year-old vines. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay ‘sur lie’ Riesling 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $29.50, that’s $28.03 at 5% off and $26.55 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
“The 2022er Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Sur Lie was fermented in stainless-steel tank down to off-dry levels of residual sugar (14 g/l). The nose shows plenty of minty freshness, but also a green streak of greengage, freshly cut herbs, fennel, laurel, green apple, and lime blossom. The wine is quite light on the palate, with a hint of smoothness, which quickly gives way to tension with the arrival of a slightly sharp acidity and a fair amount of tartness. The finish is a little sharp and abrupt for the moment, which suggests that this wine should be left to age a little bit. 2025-2030+.” -Mosel Fine Wines
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Auslese 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “What an amazing nose with devastating, peachy intensity and an overtone of saffron. Staggering concentration and colossal acidity give this incredible Mosel Auslese great tension. Patience will be rewarded by this highly structured, enormously complex wine that might live a century! Only a hint of grape sweetness. Drinkable now, but better from 2024.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Wintricher Geierslay Riesling Auslese 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 33 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 98 points “Totally seductive nose with all manner of exotic fruits but primarily pineapple and papaya. Mind-blowing concentration and mineral brilliance on the palate. Just keeps pumping the exotic fruit out at the very long, super fresh finish. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Pinot Noir 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $29.50, that’s $28.03 at 5% off and $26.55 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 94 points “For an entry-level pinot noir from a cool region like the Mosel, this is absurdly good. Wonderful rooty complexity on the deep and subtle nose. Impressive concentration and a velvety texture that’s hard to resist. I love the vitality in the long, plush finish. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold.”
Weingut Gunther Steinmetz Kestener Paulinsberg Pinot Noir 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer Note “Easily the most showstopping Pinot we tasted with Stefan in April 2024. WOW! A luscious red teeming with sweet cherry fruit, exemplary of the warm year; but slate soils, steep slopes (70% in some parcels!) and 50% stem inclusion keep this wine focused, fresh, and riveting. From French clones, 30+ year old vines, aged in used Burgundy barrels, some of which came from Romanee-Conti.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:
GD Vajra & Luigi Baudana
It’s rare to find benchmark wines that remain affordable from one of a wine-growing region considered one of the finest in the world for centuries, but not impossible. G.D. Vajra and the now-sister estate of Luigi Baudana manage just that.
G.D. Vajra is responsible for some of the finest Barolos we offer and also excels with their more entry-level options. Their Coste di Rose single-vineyard bottling hails from a wide range of soil types, including sandstone. Per Monica Larner of the Wine Advocate, this results in unique aromatics and a dark fruit profile, especially in the 2018.
In 2009, G.D. Vajra was entrusted by Luigi and Fiorina Baudana to carry on the legacy of their cherished garagiste operation upon their retirement. The estate’s holdings don’t exceed seven acres, making them one of the smallest wineries in all of Piedmont. As a result, these unique, old-vine wines are made in highly limited qualities. Our two 2018 bottlings on our Close-Out Sale offer excellent bang for the buck.

G.D. Vajra Coste di Rose, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Was $62.50, Now $57.50, 14 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “The 2018 Barolo Coste di Rose is a delicate, understated Barolo that will need a bit of time to fully emerge. There’s lovely purity to the fruit here, but also some angular contours that need to resolve. The 2018 is a mid-weight wine in the style of the vintage, and yet there is fine balance.”

Luigi Baudana ‘Baudana’, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Was $89, Now $69, 20 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “With fruit from Serralunga d’Alba, the 2018 Barolo Baudana is a very different wine when compared to the other single-vineyard expressions from this estate. This has to do with site and soil, and in the case of this celebrated subzone, the wines are always more powerful, more structured and mineral-driven. Dark fruit is followed by rusty notes of iron ore and crushed clay. This wine offers good substance both in terms of finish and texture. Cascina Adelaide does a great job with the Baudana.”

Luigi Baudana Cerretta, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ml Was $79, Now $69, 14 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The 2018 Barolo Cerretta is a potent, searing wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. Scorching tannins wrap around a core of dark red/black fruit, gravel, smoke, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and game. The 2018 is going to need a number of years to come around and for those formidable tannins to soften.”
