Small producers such as Arnot-Roberts are the pioneers of the “New California” movement. Started by childhood friends Duncan Arnot Meyers and Nathan Lee Roberts in 2001, they’ve quickly established themselves as some of the best producers of restrained and elegant small-parcel wines. In 2013 the San Francisco Chronicle named them “Winemakers of the Year” in recognition of the quality and consistency of the wines they’re producing, and they’ve racked up professional accolades ever since.
So, what is the “New California” movement? Started more or less around the beginning of the century, it rejects industrialized, oaky, plush, and sweetened wines with no sense of place. Instead, these wines show verve and backbone, nothing soft and fruity. The acidity and tannin evoke the great wines of France over their saccharine peers. These are serious wines that are built to age—which is how they’ve developed such a following.
In the cellar, these blossom into wines that rival the best in the world. We get small allocations every year, only a couple of barrels are made of each wine, but wanted to share the love. So hop on over to our webstore while these on to our three-day sale.
“Duncan Arnot and Nathan Roberts presented an absolutely stellar collection of wines this year. The 2021s are simply magnificent from top to bottom… Readers will also want to check out the new Red Wine California, a special bottling that hopefully will become part of the permanent lineup. I can’t think of too many winemakers who are equally skilled at making gorgeous wines from so many different varieties. This was an unforgettable tasting.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “The 2022 Chardonnay Watson Ranch shows lovely textural depth and resonance. Dried pear, spice, menthol, dried flowers and herbs fill out the layers nicely. The balance here is sublime. This is an especially savory, earthy Chardonnay, with fruit pushed into the background. The 2022 is all class.”
Winemaker’s Note “Arnot-Roberts Watson Ranch Chardonnay is from one of the southernmost vineyards in Napa Valley AVA. The vines were planted in 1993 and dry farmed in clay over limestone with a view of San Pablo Bay. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, fermented in stainless steel by native yeasts, and the wine was aged in neutral French oak barrels.”
Arnot-Roberts Randle Hill Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Yorkville Highlands 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “The gnarled old Sauvignon Blanc vines at the Randle Hill Vineyard were planted in 1982 in the Yorkville Highlands of Mendocino County. This rugged and remote site is farmed organically on a steep hillside of eroding shale, situated at 1,100’ elevation, where it enjoys warm days and cool nights. We love the mineral driven Sauvignon Blancs of France’s Loire Valley and have long hoped we would find a site here in California that could grow Sauvignon Blanc that leaned in that direction. We knew that vine age, clone, elevation, soil, and farming all had to be right for us to achieve that expression and this vineyard met all the criteria. The resulting wine exhibits mineral and saline flavors balanced with a hint of herbaceous and floral aromatics.”
Arnot-Roberts Rose, California 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 91 points “The 2023 Rosé is an unusual blend of Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Grenache and Tina Coa. Effusive, broad aromatics and lovely mid-palate depth make for an intriguing yet quirky Rosé that offers too much versatility. Wildflowers, blood orange, mint, rose petals and kirsch are some of the many nuances that build in this striking, wonderfully inviting Rosé from Arnot Roberts.”
Winery Note “We began making Rosé from Touriga Nacional in 2010. We were compelled by the grape’s deep color, brilliant acidity and aromatic complexity even at low sugar content. Touriga is a late-ripening Portuguese variety that needs some heat to mature, and we have sought out vineyards suited to this hearty variety. The fruit from all of these vineyard sites [Luchsinger Vineyard (Trousseau, Touriga Nacional), St. Amant Vineyard (Touriga Nacional), St. Jorge Vineyard (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cão, Trincadeira)] is hand-harvested, then lightly crushed by foot to release some color prior to pressing. The juice is fermented with native yeasts and full native malolactic in all stainless steel tanks, then blended together to harmonize prior to bottling in early January.”
Arnot-Roberts Gamay Noir, El Dorado 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $28, that’s $26.60 at 5% off and $25.20 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “We first began working with Gamay in 2011 as a collaborative effort with our friend Rajat Parr under the RPM label, until the final vintage for the RPM project in 2015. The original sources were Barsotti and Witters vineyards grown in the granitic soils of the Sierra Foothills, situated at around 3000’ elevation. In 2022 we were fortunate to begin working with Gamay from the Ascona Vineyard high up in the Santa Cruz Mountains at 2,500′ elevation. We employ the carbonic maceration technique where the uncrushed grapes are sealed up for several days, allowing the berries to begin fermentation from the inside out. This method is used by many of our favorite Beaujolais producers and adds a spicy fruitiness that infuses freshness and energy in the resulting wines.”
Arnot-Roberts Kirschenmann Vineyard Zinfandel, Mokelumne River 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Winery Note “In the spring of 2012, our friends Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua purchased an incredible old vineyard east of Lodi in the tiny town of Victor, California named Kirschenmann. The site is located on an oxbow of the Mokelumne River, which over centuries has deposited loads of fine, sandy, granitic loam from erosion of the Sierra Nevada mountains to the East. The vineyard was planted in 1915 on its own roots and is primarily Zinfandel, with a little Carignane, Cinsault and Mondeuse Noir spread throughout the block. The old, twisted, dry-farmed vines are thriving under the watchful eye of Tegan, one of the foremost experts on old vines in California. Tegan also produces his own wine under the Sandlands label and is the current winemaker for Turley Vineyards in Napa. We are lucky to be offered one ton of this fruit per year allowing us to vinify just 2-3 barrels annually.”
Arnot-Roberts Red, California 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “The 2022 Red Wine California is a very pleasant, fruity wine, especially in this vintage. About 50% of the wine was aged in cement. That, along with early bottling, preserves forward fruit and a good bit of freshness. Sweet floral and spice notes lift the mid-palate and finish.”
Arnot-Roberts Syrah, Sonoma Coast 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $39, that’s $37.05 at 5% off and $35.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2023 vintage. 2022 review provided for reference.
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points “The 2022 Syrah (California) is bold, rich and explosive. As is so often the case, the Syrah is flat-out gorgeous. In this vintage, the Arnot-Roberts Syrah used the broader California appellation. All the elements are so well balanced. Juicy dark cherry, plum, sage, menthol, new leather and lavender build into the dense, textured finish.”
Arnot-Roberts Trousseau, North Coast 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $36, that’s $34.20 at 5% off and $32.40 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer’s Note “A perennial favorite, this wine seems to form a seamless connection between Arnot-Roberts’ new world approach and the old world terroirs and styles that inform their work year in and year out. The deft touch used to vinify this temperamental varietal results in an expression of candied new world style fruit wrapped up in a package that expresses subtle nuances and complexity rarely encountered in young California wine. Light-bodied, but gracefully perfumed, it seems to match whatever food you’d like to throw at it with surprising dexterity.”
Considered a benchmark in its home town of Gigondas, Saint Cosme is a historical gem. The estate was founded in the 1500s and is helmed by the talented Louis Barroul. He is the 14th generation of his family to oversee this storied estate. The wines Barroul makes are rich and powerful, with undeniable terroir signatures. It’s no wonder that Saint Cosme has been our most popular Rhône producer for some time, and we’re always thrilled to feature their wines.
