Schloss Gobelsburg is a winery that represents tradition as well as modernity. This historic winery is nestled in the picturesque Kamptal region of Austria, and boasts a heritage that dates back to the late 12th century. Originally established as a Cistercian monastery, the estate gained new leadership In 1996 when Michael Moosbrugger became winemaker in a fascinating turn of events that matched a monk in need with a passionate young wine enthusiast.
Moosbrugger was an acquaintance of Willi Brundlmayer (an estate you must seek out within out inventory) and has asked him to keep an eye out for any suitable estate or wine projects which might be willing to take him on. Well, Willi had gotten in contact with Father Bertrand, the lead proprietor at the Gobelsburg estate and a late December 1995 phone call got the ball rolling. Willi promised “he wouldn’t interfere as long as the wines were as good as or better than his own”. This stoked a fire in Moosbrugger to pursue excellence at this historic estate.
Practically in the next few days, Moosbrugger visited the estate for the first time and two weeks later he moved in. A lease was taken out for for two generations on the whole property, including the 18th-century schloss, neatly making the sale include both tending the vines and the substantially impressive manor house. The quality of the wines since have never been better as Moosbrugger has delivered intimately on his passions and represented this historic estate in world class fashion.
Organic farming practices and a minimal intervention philosophy preside throughout the winemaking process at Gobelsburg. The hallmark grape varieties are Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, both of which flourish in the region’s distinct terroir. The vineyards are situated on steep, terraced slopes that benefit from a warm microclimate and diverse soil types, infusing the wines with incredible complexity and character.
There is a dedication here to traditional winemaking techniques, including the use of large oak barrels for fermentation and aging. This method allows the wines to develop remarkable depth while maintaining vibrant fruit flavors. Whether it’s the rich, sunbaked Riesling of the Heiligenstein plateau, the elegant Gruner from the Lamm, Grub, and Renner vineyards, or the uniquely traditional blends, these are wines that can stand toe to toe with any white wine in the world. Ultimately, Schloss Gobelsburg stands as a testament to Austria’s rich winemaking traditions, crafting wines that resonate with both historical significance and modern innovation. The best part is these wines can be yours for up to 10% off on our 3-day sale beginning now.

Wine & Spirits 93 points “Here’s a decadent bubbly, as rich and layered as a croissant, with a similar balance of toasty, nutty notes and buttery luzury. Michael Moosbrugger based it on gruner veltliner, augments it with pinot noir and riesling, then ages it for six months in barrel; he ferments the wine a second time in bottle, where he leaves it for at least three years before disgorgement. The veltliner’s earthy fruit gives away the fact that this isn’t Champagne, but it acts like one.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Kamptal Gruner Veltliner 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 26 bottles in stock now
Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 89 points “The 2022 Grüner Veltliner was picked across the Kamptal from both valley and slope sites and made in stainless steel. It opens with a mossy, yeasty, peppery savoriness, alongside a bright note of green Conference pear. White pepper, yeast, lemon and that same savory moss note define the slender, bright, light-footed palate. (Bone-dry).”
Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Zweigelt 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $19.50, that’s $18.53 at 5% off and $17.55 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock nowNo reviews for the 2022 vintage. 2021 review provided for reference.Anne Krebiehl MW-Vinous 89 points “The 2021 Zweigelt was grown on the southern edge of Kamptal on alluvial gravels. Subtle reduction is still smoky and flinty, and a sense of iron oxide swings amidst the cherry notes on the nose. The palate is juicy, medium-bodied, and full of fruit. A fine web of tannins holds some light white pepperiness and adds lovely energy to that rounded, juicy fruit. (Bone-dry) (Drink between 2023-2030).”
Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Lamm Gruner Veltliner Erste OTW Lage 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The intensely yellow-colored 2020 Ried Lamm 1ÖTW opens with an intense and elegant, refined bouquet of ripe and concentrated fruits intermingled with spicy iodine notes of crystalline rocks. On the palate, this is a dense and very elegant Grüner Veltliner with fine and crystalline acidity and a long elegant finish. The Lamm has more flesh and texture than the Grub as well as more suppleness and power, but it’s also more saturating in 2020. Definitely a wine to age, though. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Ried Lamm Gruner Veltliner Erste OTW Lage 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $94.50, that’s $89.78 at 5% off and $85.05 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “Showing clear, elegant fruit of ripe, spicy pear with a fine terroir tone, the 2021 Ried Lamm 1ÖTW is a finely juicy, very elegant and full-bodied but not alcoholic Grüner Veltliner with delicate acidity and stimulating salinity. It is a stylistically confident, typical Kamptal cru from the foot of the Heiligenstein. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg, September 2023.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Gaisberg Riesling Reserve Erste OTW Lage 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “The 2020 Ried Gaisberg offers a clear, precise and spicy apricot nose with spicy notes of black rock splinters. Lush and savory as well as saline on the palate, with crystalline acidity and almost tropical fruit (passion fruit), this is a very elegant and aromatic, tightly structured yet perfectly balanced and sustainable Gaisberg Riesling with stimulating purity and crystallinity.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Heiligenstein Riesling Reserve Erste OTW Lage 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “Gobelsburg’s 2018 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW opens with a very clear, bright, fresh and flinty, very elegant and almost coolish bouquet, like almost no other Heiligenstein of this vintage except for Bründlmayer’s selections. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a bright and refined, highly elegant and crystalline Heiligenstein with an intense, piquant and mineral finish. Tasted at Schloss Grafenegg and Schloss Gobelsburg in September 2019.”
Decanter 93 points “Michael Moosbrugger, Gobelsburg’s director, has made this large monastic property the intellectual centre of the region, where he explores different styles of winemaking. His Heiligenstein has a vibrant and exuberant nose, with spicy stone-fruit aromas. On the palate it’s very ripe, yet taut and precise. A concentrated wine, it shows clarity and a mineral undertone, yet it’s surprisingly accessible, perhaps because the acidity seems a touch low.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Heiligenstein Riesling Reserve Erste OTW Lage 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points “Gobelsburg’s 2020 Ried Heiligenstein opens with a clear, bright and savory bouquet of sandstone, salt, ripe stone fruits and tea. Lush and round on the palate, this is a textured, very elegant and balanced Heiligenstein Riesling with a lingering, fine salinity on the highly elegant and aromatic finish. This is again an excellent, quiet and perfectly balanced Riesling from one of the greatest Riesling sites along the Danube River. The 2020 already drinks beautifully but can be aged for two or three decades.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Tradition Heritage Cuvee 3 Year 851 NV 750ml Displayed Price: $61.90, that’s $58.80 at 5% off and $55.71 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93 points “Based on Gaisberg Riesling and Renner Grüner Veltliner, the NV Tradition Heritage Cuvée 3 Years Edition 851 combines the vintages 2019 and 2017. Deep, intense and very elegant on the nose, with ripe but fine fruit aromas, this is a full-bodied, textured, very elegant and balanced white wine with lots of Veltliner features. The wine has ripe and elegant acidity but reveals fine and grippy tannins on the intensely aromatic finish. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.”
Schloss Gobelsburg Tradition Heritage Cuvee 10 Year NV 750ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points “Based on 2010 Renner Grüner Veltliner, with a 5% part of Gaisberg Riesling, the intensely yellow-colored NV Tradition Heritage Cuvée 10 Years Edition 850 offers a deep, pure, intense, concentrated, beautifully aromatic, spicy-floral and Traminer-like bouquet of white and yellow stone fruits, yellow rose petals as well as cloves, wax and refreshing flinty aromas. Rich, intense and highly elegant on the beautifully balanced and aromatic palate, this is a pure, vital, finessed and salty-mineral as well as tensioned and sustainable cuvée with a young, still tannic texture and remarkable oak and nougat flavors. This finely tannic 10 Years cuvée seems to be much younger and bottled from smaller barrels than the “3 years edition” sibling. There is no wine on this planet that is similar in style. The fruit is Austrian, very charming and irresistible, but the structure and texture builds the bridge to France—or more precisely Alsace and Burgundy, regions that Michael Moosbrugger adores but never would try to copy. Tasted at the domain in June and again at home in July and August 2021.”
