Oregon Chardonnay

Just as Burgundy inspired Oregon winemakers to plant and craft Pinot Noir, so, too, did it encourage the planting and crafting of its noble white grape: Chardonnay. Burgundy may offer the pinnacle of Chardonnay, but Oregon’s wineries offer it an illustrious yet more affordable home. Here, we find a wide diversity of styles, from unoaked and neutral-barrel expressions, to mineral-laden and reductive, to opulent, oak- or fruit-forward cuvees, and every combination in between. Though their prices have yet to reach Burgundian, the quality is enough to make several top domaines buy up their own corner of our state.

We offer a wide variety of in-stock picks, including from some of our favorite producers, such as Tan Fruit, Cameron, Goodfellow, and Sequitur.

Featured Oregon Chardonnay Producer: Tan Fruit

Jim Maresh, third generation owner and winemaker of Arterberry Maresh, knows a thing or two about crafting Grand Cru-level Oregon Chardonnay. From the winery’s prized position in the Dundee Hills, he releases what critics praise as “are some of the most impressive wines I’ve tried anywhere—not just in the US”, per Erin Brooks of the Wine Advocate.

Tan Fruit is Jim’s experimental Chardonnay side project first launched with the 2019 vintage. Leave it to Jim to make his side project a points-sweeping EVENT, consistently raking in top prizes for each release. These are stunning releases offer even more exploration of Oregon, sourcing from a mixture of vineyards, including new sites with each release. They are some of the finest Oregon Chardonnays available and some of our favorites.

“The 2022 Chardonnay Petite Tan Fruit is perfumed with notes of young peach, crushed stones and savory herbs. Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2022 Chardonnay Anela is singular and savory. Candied peaches and manuka honey mingle with dried sage, roasted hazelnuts and struck flint on the nose, and it teases you with slowly blossoming, spicy undertones. The palate is luxurious and satiny with kaleidoscopic, mouth-coating flavors, and its modest 30% new French oak is already well integrated. It has a foil of laser-like acidity, and its juiciness and hauntingly long finish draw you back to the glass again and again.”

It opens with youthful flinty character that gives way to alluring scents of white peach, brioche and meringue. The light-bodied palate features dynamic flavors of ripe citrus and saline, honey and nuts. Its satiny texture is structured by tense, linear acidity, and it has a long, mineral-driven finish. It will be long lived in the cellar.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2022 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from a block of Dijon clone vines planted in 1991 in the Dundee Hills on a steep, south-facing slope at 675 feet of elevation. Barrel fermented and matured for 10 months in 15% new French oak, plus four months in stainless steel, it’s reminiscent of Chablis and boasts exceptionally pure aromas. It opens with flint and petrichor before blossoming to apricot, elderflower liqueur, lime peel and hazelnuts. The palate is vibrant and silky with understated layers of creamy, peachy fruit, and its linear acidity and flinty tones come together for a shimmery finish. For several days after it’s opened, the Maresh Vineyard becomes more and more expressive, pointing to a long life in the cellar.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Sophie’s Vineyard comes from an isolated vineyard near the town of Yoncalla in the Umpqua Valley, planted in the late 1970s with Draper and Wente selections. Matured in oak and finished with four months in stainless steel, it has fresh scents of green pear, quince and citrus blossom with undertones of almonds, flint and honey. The light-bodied palate is creamy and plush with gently nutty fruits and a long, refreshing finish.”

James Suckling 97 points
“Perfumed nose expressing notes of baked pears, almond powder, cream, baked lemons, chamomile and some white flowers. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and character. Vertical with so much tension. Vibrant and intense but remains in control. Plenty of verve and brightness. There is a purity to it. Textural and well-composed. A brilliant white with a long, mineral finish. Drink or hold.”

Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from Wente vines planted in 1983 and was matured in 20% Damy barrels for nine months before finishing in stainless steel. The nose is alluringly spicy, opening from flint and roasted almonds to an intense core of savory yellow peach and beeswax. The palate is satiny and unctuous with ripe fruit, floral perfume and flinty streaks. Despite its luxurious texture and flavor, it maintains its shimmery acidity and boasts a long, dynamic finish. It’s a special expression that offers pleasurable generosity and precision.”

Winery Note
“Aromas of Asian pear, lemon chiffon, honeysuckle, mint and a trace of eucalyptus. The palate has the typical Four Winds high tension and firm acidity combined with mineral to complete its austerity. Richness from barrel enters mid palate and merges with silky texture and creamy fruit to a complete high energy finish. Beeswax lingers as does lime-pie. Wente & Draper clones. Native fermentation.”

Cameron Winery Clos Electrique Blanc, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote:
The Clos Electrique is Cameron’s estate vineyard, named after the electric deer fence that surrounds it. This is planted to a mix of clones and is vinified traditionally—no racking and all in older barrels. This is crisp and coiled, with distinct minerality and a lot of power in a lithe frame. Like most vintages of the Electrique Blanc, this is quite good now but will be stellar in a few years.

The Eyrie Vineyards Estate Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $44.50, that’s $42.28 at 5% off and $40.05 at 10% off, 24 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2022 Chardonnay Estate has inviting aromas of dried apples, mixed nuts, beeswax and spicy undertones. The medium-bodied palate offers surprisingly concentrated, savory flavors. Its luxurious, mouth-coating texture is balanced by mouthwatering acidity, and it has a long, flavorful finish.”

Failla Seven Springs Vineyard Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 12 bottles in stock now
No reviews for the 2021 vintage. 2019 review provided for reference.
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “This biodynamic fruit has been fermented and aged in a mix of concrete egg and oak barrels, 10% new. The flavors have the wild feral character that suggests native yeasts were used, and that mix of fruit and flower and notes of pollen and spice and certain unidentifiable herbs makes this a wine to contemplate rather than pound down.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars ‘Vin Soif’ Chardonnay, McMinnville 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $21.90, that’s $20.81 at 5% off and $19.71 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“Yellow apple, pear, lime flower and peel, almonds, hints of tarragon and pastry dough. In the mouth, it’s more yellow apples and pear, underripe nectarine, lime peel, and a distinct stoniness. Bottled a year early from our normal Chardonnay program, the impetus for this wine was to push for a pretty, nervy, and slightly less lees inflected wine for everyday enjoyment. 12.0% abv and 198 cases produced.”

Goodfellow Family Cellars Temperance Hill Chardonnay, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Audrey Frick-Jeb Dunnuck 96 points
“The 2021 Chardonnay Temperance Hill is incredible in its aromatics for lovers of well-managed reduction. Bright golden-yellow, it’s flush with flint wet stones, vibrant citrus, and golden pineapple. Full-bodied, with a core of driving citrus and energetic acidity, it has a long and saline finish, with a weightless feel and elegant balance. It has a lovely, rounded edge to its acidity and does not come across as harsh. This is an outstanding and age-worthy wine to drink 2025-2035.”

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $31.90, that’s $30.31 at 5% off and $28.71 at 10% off, 16 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“This 2023 bottling is comprised of three dry-farmed vineyards planted in volcanic soils and hand-harvested on Sept. 9th, 10th & 17th. The clusters were gently pressed and the juice sent tank to begin their wild yeast fermentation. Once initiated, the wines were moved to French and Austrian oak to finish primary and malolactic fermentation. Bottled without filtration after 11 months.”

Kelley Fox Wines Willamette Valley Chardonnay 2023 750ml Displayed Price: $26, that’s $24.70 at 5% off and $23.40 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93+ points
“The 2023 Chardonnay Willamette Valley is more savory than sweet, with crushed almonds and yellow florals accentuating green apples. This is sweetly spiced with silken textures and ripe orchard fruits, all offset by a tinge of saline minerals and sour citrus. Depths of lemony concentration linger as this finishes with tremendous length. The 2023 is just a baby today and seems to evolve further with each tilt of the glass. This is fabulous.”

Peter William Egan Vineyard Chardonnay, Rogue Valley 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $26.50, that’s $25.18 at 5% off and $23.85 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“The Egan Vineyard was formerly known as the Gold vineyard, re-named for the new owners. Originally the vineyard of Rogue Valley wine legend Randy Gold. This wine was produced for us by Eric Weisinger. This one has approximately 20% new French Oak (with the remainder done in neutral oak). A subtle toasty quality from the oak is just enough to accent the wine, without overpowering the fruit. Rich, balanced, creamy, with just a hint of spice & oak.”

James Suckling 93 points
“A deliciously vibrant chardonnay with lemons, jasmine, brown rice, hazelnuts, white grapefruit and apricots. It’s medium-bodied, sleek and elegant, with gentle butter and pastry undertones to the fresh fruit. Long and creamy at the end. Drink now or hold.”

Westrey Reserve Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 10 bottles in stock now
Decanter 92 points
“[Tasted July 2024] The 2017 Reserve Chardonnay from Westrey balances richness wonderfully with saline minerality and savoury dried florals. Chamomile, white pepper and seaspray aromatics play nicely with smoky grilled lemon notes. The palate shows savoury lemongrass, oyster shells and piquant notes of citrus rind alongside spiced pear, with white pepper carrying the finish. Drinking Window 2024-2029.”

White Walnut Estate ‘North Blocks’ Chardonnay, Dundee Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 20 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 93 points
“I could inhale this wine’s lemon gelato and pine needle perfume all the day and all of the night. Then the wine’s Golden Delicious apple and filbert flavors kick in, along with a savory note akin to cold soba noodles with Thai basil. As always with this producer—killer acidity. Enjoy now until 2033.”

Gaja Darmagi Langhe, Piedmont 2017 750ml Was $249, Now $219, 2 bottles in stock now
Stephen Tanzer-Vinous 94+ points
“The 2017 Darmagi (Cabernet Sauvignon) is gorgeous. Ample, silky and voluptuous to its core, Darmagi offers tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit richness and texture. Readers who prefer to see a full range of Cabernet aromatics should plan on cellaring the 2017 for at least a few years. Hints of blackberry jam, mocha, licorice and spice linger, but more than anything else, the 2017 is all about flamboyance. This is an especially strong vintage.”

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml Was $115, Now $89, 1 bottle in stock now
Wine & Spirits Magazine 92 points
“This is the most high-toned of Gaja’s three 2018 Brunellos, a portion of the fruit coming from the Torrenieri vineyard in Montalcino’s cooler northeastern corner. Hints of oregano and citrus peel accent the tangy red cherry flavors, with lingering hints of smoke and spice on the finish.”

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta “Rennina”, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml Was $236, Now $199, 5 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“Harmonious and bordering on creamy in texture, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, loam, almond and black pepper aromas and flavors. Reveals pleasant bitterness as this winds down on the lingering aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2045.”

Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta ‘Sugarille’, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018 750ml Was $259, Now $219, 5 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“A dark, brooding 2018, with accents of smoke, vanilla, iron and tar surrounding a core of cherry and plum flavors. Reveals balsamic elements of eucalyptus and wild herbs on the lingering finish. On the austere side now, with a core of fruit and mineral. Best from 2025 through 2043.”

Gaja Sito Moresco Rosso Langhe, Piedmont 2021 750ml Was $75, Now $64.50, 4 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“A beautiful violet color atypical of Nebbiolo but reflective of the 2021 vintage where fullness and richness are even present to the eye. The wine has bold notes of blackberry, cherry, blood orange, and bergamot with a touch of flintiness. Medium-structured with lots of juiciness and harmony on the palate all lead to well-balanced acidity and tannin structure with a long finish.”
