With Two Ultra-Classic Producers
Westrey & Domaine Bourée
Stock Up & Save
Founded in 1993 by Amy Wesselman and David Autrey, Westrey is a core producer in the Dundee Hills. They are farmers, first and foremost. They’re not bombastic enough to chase points or the ephemeral fame of trendy styles. Instead, they live their time-tested values. They prize sustainability, sourcing exclusively organic or LIVE-certified vineyards. Their fruit is all dry-farmed, too, because they believe it produces “better wines and respects the scarcity of water.” Their estate vineyard, Oracle, was originally planted in 1977 and revived, quite literally, by Amy and David after they purchased the property in 2000.
Their style is classic Oregon, partly because so much of their wine is held back before release. Maybe it’s because the wines speak quietly of place and time, evocative in their hushed tones.
Like Westrey, Pierre Bourée et Fils is a household name among winemakers but less so among the general population. In the venerable village of Gevrey-Chambertin, they are a historic and noteworthy producer. The estate dates back to the mid-19th century. More recently, Pierre Bourée has grown its profile through shrewd purchases, including the acquisition of Clos de la Justice (a monopole), as well as a small plot within the Premier Cru vineyard Les Champeaux.
Currently run by Brothers Bernard and Jean-Christophe Vallet, intervention in the vineyard is limited to pruning in the spring and organic compost for fertilizer. Just like their cult neighbor Domaine Dujac, the reds are vinified entirely with whole clusters in foudre and raised in oak for two years. New oak is only used to retire barrels too old for production, allowing for the full character of their winemaking practices to be seen.
Fiercely traditional in approach, Bourée’s wines are a throwback to a time when cellaring was an expectation, not a luxury. These are not wines intended for early drinking. Instead, they reward patience, something of a lost art in today’s purchase and pop wine culture. With adequate time Bourée’s wines evolve from rustic and esoteric, to silky and timeless. Think something akin to Rousseau, but vinified by Dujac, if perhaps a little less concentrated. These are wines for an unabashed Burgundian palate.
Fortunately, we’ve taken care of that aging for you and are offering a curated selection of professionally-cellared releases in stock now in our temperature-controlled shop. Opportunities to purchase perfectly cellared Burgundy don’t come around often. We’ve placed both of these classic producers on three-day discount. So, stock up and enjoy these tributes to their respective homelands.

Dark berries and forest floor notes mark the aromatics, and the palate is dusty blackberries with hints of wild herbs with a zippy acidity to lighten the finish. Drinking Window 2024- 2030.”
Westrey “Nadja” Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Decanter 92 points “[Tasted July 2024] There are pretty savoury aromatics from the Justice Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills. Wild dried herbs, lavender, and strawberries are effusive as aromas leap from the glass. On the palate, candied strawberries combined with notes of white pepper and green tea leaves, pomegranate pulp, and anise provide complexity and depth to this wine a decade on. Drinking Window 2024 – 2033.”

The palate shows ample spice and red fruit, such as currants, tart Montmorency cherries, and spiced blood orange. An undercurrent of pine bough and white pepper lifts the wine to its finish. Red currants and cranberries alight from the glass with notes of fresh spearmint and lively red florals. Winery Note “Favorable bloom conditions in the Dundee Hills yielded good set, and plenty of sunshine ripened it beautifully without any disease pressure. The crop was bountiful, with thick skins, good structure, and voluminous fruit. Vine age ranged from 13 – 37 years. One of the most highly-acclaimed vintages by winemakers and wine-writers alike. The Reserve barrels were carefully chosen for their expression of their vineyard of origin and their aging potential. The wine displays spicy red-raspberry, red currants, earth, and spice. Hints of vanilla sweetness and rich coffee round out the palate.”

The wine has a weighty flavor spectrum of wild raspberry, red currant and sweet spice. Fruit aromas are complemented by notes of sweet clove spice and the slightest hint of vanilla oak. On the palate the wine is open and opulent, with loads of pure Pinot fruit, leading into a rich mid-palate and a balanced finish with a hint of well-integrated tannin.”

It’s showing beautifully with forest floor aromatics, of mushrooms, pine tar and violets. The palate retains freshness at the nine year drinking interval, spiced chicory root, wild anise and clove envelope dark berries and spiced black plums. Drinking Window 2024 – 2030.”

Pierre Bourée Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml Displayed Price: $199, that’s $189.05 at 5% off and $179.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
Robert Parker: “…the red wines are of extremely high quality, particularly in the top vintages. They are very traditional burgundies that are vatted for over three weeks, kept in old oak barrels, and bottled unfiltered. In fact, the Bouree Pere et Fils may be the last firm in the Cote d’Or to bottle their burgundies in a top vintage. This firm maintains a surprisingly low profile and its prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality of their wines.”

Vinopolis Close-Out Sale Featurette:
Giovanni Rosso
Founded by a family that farmed some of Serralunga’s most famous sites for over 120 years, Giovanni Rosso has owned the Cerretta Vineyard since 1920. The winery describes the resulting wines as “full-bodied, enveloping, and silky”, with floral notes wrapped in assertive tannins. 2016 was a fabulous year in Barolo. Our remaining bottles will offer decades of enjoyment.
In Stock & On Sale Now:
Giovanni Rosso Cerretta, Barolo DOCG 2016 750ml Was $89, Now $79, 5 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’Keefe-Wine Enthusiast 97 points “Rose, red-berry, camphor and dark-spice aromas slowly emerge in the glass. Showing Serralunga’s hallmark of firm structure and finesse, the full-bodied, youthfully tense palate delivers juicy red cherry, raspberry compote, dried mint and licorice set against a backbone of noble tannins. Bright acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. Drink 2026–2056. -Kerin O’Keefe”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “The Giovanni Rosso 2016 Barolo Cerretta is a tight, focused and high-energy expression of Nebbiolo. Red and purple fruit aromas of cassis, dried cranberry and cherry provide pretty highlights, but ample space is given to those equally pretty aromas of licorice, campfire ash and candied orange peel that so deftly play supporting roles. To the palate, this is a glossy, polished wine with enough tannic kick to carry it forward for another 10 or 20 years of cellar aging.”

Champagne of the Day:
Tarlant Zero Champagne
If you haven’t heard of Champagne Tarlant, maybe your ancestors had. Founded in 1687 and passed down from generation to generation ever since, Tarlant is a household name in Epernay. The family grows 35 acres (with four crus in their portfolio) of the usual-suspect Champagne varieties, plus such grapes as Arbanne and Petit Meslier. After the crush in a traditional-style, round wooden press, each vineyard plot is vinified separately, in oak or stainless steel, and then raised in barrel. The Tarlant family does the blending, and likes its Champagne dry, so the wines are mostly undosed. This is classically pure Champagne, of deep-rooted descent that stood out in a recent tasting as one of the finest examples of Brut Nature Champagne.
In Stock Now:
Tarlant Zero Brut Nature, Champagne NV (2015) 750ml $69 special, 20 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 94 points “Already in the nose this Brut Nature makes a bold statement with full aromas of quince and spice. Powerful and seriously structured with stacks of candied citrus and dried pear character on the ample palate. Complex autumnal finish. From vineyards in the villages of Oeuilly, Boursault, Celles-les-Conde and Saint-Agnan, a blend of 2015 and reserve wines matured in oak. Bottled in April 2016 and disgorged on June 27th 2022. Drink or hold.”
