Some of the world’s oldest wineries are still quietly making some of the most profound wines for their region. These estates have been loved and sought-after for generations. Think of Saint Cosme in Gigondas, Schloss Gobelsburg in the Kamptal region of Austria, Karthäuserhof in the Mosel, Ricasoli and Antinori in Tuscany, and Kopke in the Douro.
Kopke, founded in 1638, makes what might be the most vibrant and long-lived port wines available. They have been through adverse times in their nearly 400-year history, seeing dramatic shifts in the climate, swings in the popularity of their product, and the rise and fall of populist dictators. Through all of this, they’ve been consistent in their commitment to making the greatest Tawny and Colheita (vintage Tawny) Port available.
We’re fortunate to have a tremendous lineup available with additional stock landing just in time for the holidays. The unbelievably youthful vintage Colheitas are perfect examples of how age adds concentration and depth, with the traditional Kopke freshness that keeps these so vibrant. All of our selections will continue to show their highlights and develop rich spice and dried fruit characteristics for years to come.
Although the main focus of Kopke has always been its Colheita and Tawnies, they also craft exceptional Vintage Port. In 1922, the Port House acquired the Quinta de São Luiz, recognized as one of the most important estates in the Douro due to the quality of its vineyards and its history. You can experience two Vintage Ports from this estate, the 2015 and 2019.

Kopke 30 Year Old White Port 375ml Displayed Price: $79, that’s $75.05 at 5% off and $71.10 at 10% off, 5 half-bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 94 points “The NV 30 Year Old White Port was bottled in 2017 with a bar-top cork and 120 grams per liter of residual sugar. Simply gorgeous, this has a sweet conclusion, but it also adds some Tawny-like flavor to go with its fresh feel. There is fine grip on the finish, the acidity lacing the fruit into the palate. Depending on how cold you drink it, you might be forgiven for guessing “Tawny” if you taste it blind (and it looks a little tawny in color, too). Beautifully put together, this should do well over the next couple of decades, in all likelihood, or more. They are not really meant to be held, though. This is only available in half bottles, to which the price applies.

Kopke 50 Year Old White Port 375ml Displayed Price: $179, that’s $170.05 at 5% off and $161.10 at 10% off, 4 half-bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 96 points “The NV 50 Year White Port was bottled in April 2022 with 123 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Shockingly fresh for its age, this is also delicious, concentrated and impressively long on the finish. It has a lot of characteristics of an old Tawny, but a very fresh old Tawny. The acidity enlivens this, though, making it both lighter and brighter than a typical Tawny. It has a refreshing quality that is appealing to go with its complexity. There’s also power and grip, but it always tastes great. The finish goes on forever. This is a great white.”

Kopke 50 Year Old Tawny Port 750ml Displayed Price: $219, that’s $208.05 at 5% off and $197.10 at 10% off, 5 bottles in stock now
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 98 points “The NV 50 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in May 2022 with 134 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. This is an entrant in the new age-indicated category of 50; it no longer stops at 40. I thought the 50 Year white was fabulous. Its Tawny brother is as good or better. It doesn’t have the brightness of the white in terms of acidity (the fruit doesn’t taste old in terms of decay, so don’t misunderstand), but it is richer, lusher and more flavorful. There’s a touch of nuts, caramel and spice. It also has a long, long finish, which is what I would expect from an old Tawny in top form. Kopke did a great job with the blend here. This is completely delicious, smooth and balanced, juicy on the finish. Which is better? Depends on what you like, and it is worth getting some of each. For wines this old, the prices are reasonable. They are both great experiences.”

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 2001 750ml Displayed Price: $59, that’s $56.05 at 5% off and $53.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Wine Enthusiast 92 points “As one of a series of great, aged tawnies released by Kopke, this Colheita is still quite young. It has just hints of the freshness of red fruits that are now endowed with intense acidity, old-wood flavors and great concentration. Dried fruits show through the bite of spirit and the mellow aftertaste. Drink now.”

Nick Room-IWSC 97 points “Excellent in all aspects. Caramel and molasses on the nose, palate abundant with deeper toffee, vanilla and ripe prune. Cedar spices combine with fine citrus fruit around a red fruit core. Balanced and with further evolution still to come. Seriously good.”

Kopke Colheita Tawny Port 1934 750ml Displayed Price: $899, that’s $854.05 at 5% off and $809.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles ETA November 1st
Mark Squires-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 1934 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled March 2022 with 149 grams per liter of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Of the many Sogevinus Tawnies that the producer showed over its various houses, this was the oldest and tasted like it. Yet, like all of the producer’s oldies, they do a great job in producing complexity without the fruit seeming too old. I’m told it is never topped off too. There are only about 450 liters left for the future. It is a bit darker, leaning a little more to molasses, but it’s surprisingly fresh for its age. It has fine concentration and an endless finish. It is certainly special, not automatically a lot better than, say, a 50 Year, but a very different experience.”

Wine Spectator 91 points “Warm toffee, cinnamon and ginger notes glide through, enhanced by a light streak of juniper. Ends with accents of dark tea and a flash of bitter almond. Drink now.”

Tua Rita
Tua Rita has been growing in reputation since the mid-1980s, with most attention being paid to their flagship Merlot: Redigaffi. It’s always an amazing and collectable wine, but 2010 was a standout. This is Pomerol with Italian verve. Expect black fruit, light leather and animal notes, as well as baking spice and a floral note that is almost herb-like. It is just entering a beautiful drinking window, but will continue to age gracefully for those with space and patience.
And the Giusto di Notri? Best ever.
In Stock Now:
Tua Rita Giusto di Notri Toscana IGT 2015 750ml Was $79, Now $69, 2 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96-97 points “Best Giusto di Notri ever? Full body, ripe and powerful tannins, as well as beautiful fruit. Chewy yet polished tannins and a lingering finish. This is dense and structured with beautifully polished tannins and plenty of currant and blackberry character. Full body and chewy tannins yet refined and juicy. Lots of Mediterranean herbs with the dark fruit. Blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon with merlot and cabernet franc. Pretty barrel sample. This is coming along very nicely. Can’t wait to taste in bottle. Made from organic grapes.”
Tua Rita Redigaffi Toscana IGT 2010 750ml Was $299, Now $269, 2 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97 points “The 2010 Redigaffi is even more impressive with seamless integration of ripe fruit and oak spice that meet each other perfectly in the middle. It soars to new heights of elegance and power, imparting beautiful tones of black fruit, polished river stone, bacon fat and black pepper as it makes its steady ascent. The mouthfeel is fleshy and generous and there is plenty of backbone here to carry the wine forward throughout the years. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2038. Stefano Frascolla and Tua Rita have almost single-handedly put Suvereto on Italys winemaking map. His latest releases are nothing short of spectacular.”
