Likely established for viticulture by the Knights Templar, the Commanderie de Peyrassol estate has been producing wine since their first recorded harvest in 1256. The current iteration however was founded much more recently, with Francois Rigord undergoing extensive renovations to the estate in 1970.

Now certified organic and focused on old vines, Peyrassol is at the top of their game. The vines planted reflect Provencal wine as a whole, including Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Tibouren (an ancient variety native to the area). Their rosé portfolio encapsulates the essence of the region, featuring both highly age-worthy and collectable examples that are supremely easy-drinking. In our three-day sale, we’re offering two single-vineyard cuvées in multiple vintages: the Chateau and Le Clos.

The Château is named for the Château Peyrassol vineyard at the heart of the estate. Surrounded by oak, scrubland, the Mediterranean Sea, and the river canyon Verdon Gorge with its placid blue-green waters, this is a dreamy landscape with stunning vistas. The rosé matches the striking beauty of its home, with its tangy freshness, gentle red berry flavors, and stony minerality. The wine is assembled from parcels of old vines within the vineyard.

The elite Le Clos bottling centers the native Tibouren grape. Its near colorless appearance hides a deep minerality, a bright saline quality, and an intense red fruit and citrus character. This cult bottling is the winery’s prestige cuvée sourced from a walled-in vineyard composed of ancient vines grown on clay and limestone soils.

The Peyrassol rosés are especially elegant and nuanced, with excellent minerality and poise. These customer favorites offer some of the finest quality for the money up and down the lineup. So stock up and enjoy these elegant reminders of warmer days.

“The 2022 Rosé opens with a savory bouquet, blending dusty dried flowers with ginger, cardamom and a touch of dried peaches. This washes across the palate with opulent textures while remaining remarkably fresh and light on its feet. Sweet spices and ripe orchard fruit swirl throughout. The Château Peyrassol cleans up beautiful, pure, fresh and perfumed. It ends on a salty flourish.”

“Predominantly Tibouren, with the balance of the blend being Grenache and Rolle, Peyrassol’s super pale 2019 Cotes de Provence Rose Le Clos Peyrassol offers up scents of crushed stone, garrigue, white peach and lime, all tinged with tart red berries. It’s medium-bodied on the palate, with a silky-wet stone feel and a lingering finish that seems to build in red fruit intensity while remaining citrusy and refreshing at the same time. One of the best wines in this year’s tasting, this is a limited-production cuvée from a walled vineyard located on the estate.”

“Vivid onion skin color. A highly perfumed and complex bouquet evokes fresh citrus and pit fruits, strawberry and pungent flowers, along with building mineral and succulent herb elements. Shows excellent clarity and depth to its juicy red fruit, nectarine and mango flavors, which are sweetened by a background of vanilla note. Finishes impressively long and silky, with the mineral and floral note resonating.”
Wine & Spirits 93 points “In 2021, Petrassol credits the micro climate at their estate for the late budbreak that evaded late-April frosts, also escaping a fire (merci, le mistral), a hailstorm in nearby Pignan *blocked by hills) and flooding. More than a vintage survivor, this wine is chewy and immediately pleasurable; it captured our panel’s attention in the sweetness of its fruit. Its substantial weight would work well with a range of dishes, or stand as a meal on its own, letting it saturate your mouth, cherry-blossom accents peeking out around the edges of the finish. Its complexity is subtle but present, like a carefully-measured craft cocktail.”

Peyrassol ‘Le Clos’ Rosé, Côtes de Provence 2022 750ml Displayed Price: $77, that’s $73.15 at 5% off and $69.30 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points
“The 2022 Rosé Le Clos Peyrassol keeps the glass in constant motion. Swirling unlocks depths of dried apricot and peaches, complicated by sweet smoke and mint. This is deeply textural, creamy yet lively all the same, with tantalizing acidity and vividly ripe orchard fruits perfectly contrasted by ginger. Cooling and poised, yet still juicy on the palate, the 2022 finishes with admirable length, leaving green melon and inner florals to fade slowly.”

Peyrassol ‘Chateau Peyrassol’ Rouge, Côtes de Provence 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $51.90, that’s $49.31 at 5% off and $46.71 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now
Importer Note
“60% Syrah, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Grenache. With its purple tints, this wine gives off notes of ripe Syrah from the first nose: licorice, pepper, and peony then give way to a beautiful procession of small red and black fruits. The palate is beautifully mature, supported by velvety tannins and smooth acidity. Intense flavors of red fruit, blackberry, and spices caress the palate until the round, fleshy finish. A vintage of fine balance and noble elegance.”

Emrich-Schonleber

Despite the fame and renown of the estate inside Germany, Emrich-Schonleber flies under the radar in the USA. These are spectacular wines—every bit the equal of Dönnhoff, their main competition in the Nahe.

Father and son team Werner and Frank Schönleber work with awe-inspiring sites, including Halenberg. Unusually steep for the Nahe, this vineyard has slopes of up to 70% composed of blue slate (like the Mosel) and quartz.

The Schönlebers are best known for their top-end GG’s, but don’t sleep on the Pradikat wines, as well (or the rare TBA). Though only available in painfully tiny quantities in some vintages, we stock up whenever we can.

“Frank Schönleber, who took over his parental estate in 2005, is the third generation of his family to farm vineyards in Monzingen after his grandfather started to focus on wine only and his father Werner recultivated historic sites… The wines are bone dry, yet a light touch marks them. There is much elegance and subtle savouriness here.” -Anne Krebiehl MW, writing for Vinous in 2023

Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Spätlese 2018 750ml Was $41.90, Now $33, 1 bottle in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points
“Lightly poached pear and white peach gain a welcome bit of brightness from fresh lime, so that an effusively ripe and soothingly creamy Riesling still delivers animation and refreshment. At the same time, there is a sense of lift and delicacy here that goes beyond what was exhibited by this year’s Kabinett, and which perfectly fits the floral perfume that wafts through this wine’s entire performance. A bittersweet hint of cassis and subtle piquancy of fruit pit add counterpoint to the complexly layered, bell-clear finish. The grapes for this came in during the first days of October. Picking under the right conditions for Spätlese was just as challenging this year as picking for Kabinett, opined Schönleber, who admitted to having simply “missed the window” for doing so in the Frühlingsplätzchen. “More and more,” he said, noting the irony, “Spätlese is going to signify anything but ‘late-harvest.’””

Weingut Emrich-Schonleber Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2018 375ml Was $299, Now $249, 14 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2018 Halenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is incredibly pure and aromatic on the nose where super ripe but clear peach aromas are displayed. Extremely rich and refined on the palate, this is a ripe, terribly sweet but refined, fresh and salty-piquant TBA with a stimulating finish. A fabulous wine. Tasted in July 2019.”
David Schildknecht-Vinous 97 points “Peach jam and orange marmalade are prominent in the bittersweet, cooked-fruit but zesty personality of this super-concentrate from a mere hundred liters’ worth of tightly shriveled berries gathered over an extended period and pressed with great difficulty. A white-bread-like aura of yeastiness serves as a noble aromatic expression of botrytis, while an influx of caramel further highlights the impression of botrytis ennoblement, complemented by a feel that is strikingly creamy as well as viscous. An aromatic evocation of sea breeze anticipates the mouthwatering salinity that, along with bright, juicy lemon and orange – testimony to the 13 grams of acidity that have, as it were, been held in reserve – informs this elixir’s superbly sustained finish. One’s mouth is left at once creamily coated and tingling as if from a lightning strike.”
