Biondi-Santi is quite literally the crème de la crème when it comes to high end Brunello. “Beautifully balanced, this opens with alluring scents of wild berry, rose, baking spice and whiffs of chopped herb. Seamlessly combining ripe fruit and the firm’s trademark finesse, the bright elegantly structured palate delivers juicy wild cherry, crushed raspberry, white pepper and a hint of black tea framed in polished tannins and fresh acidity. It’s already tempting but the best is yet to come. Drink 202-2031.”

“Sangiovese harvested from vineyards in Montalcino’s northern, eastern and southern sectors combines to make a lively and balanced Brunello, its bold dark cherry flavors woven with notes of thyme and mint. A hint of orange peel brightens the long and spicy finish.”

Casanova di Neri is one of Italy’s truly elite modern producers—an icon of Brunello. Their Cerretalto is highly sought after by collectors.

“Flavors of medicinal herbs, juniper, macerated cherry, plum, tobacco and spice are the hallmarks of this intense red, which is ripe and concentrated, yet sleek and focused. Spice notes chime in on the long, minerally and firmly tannic finish. Best from 2023 through 2040.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 98 points “The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto offers a prolonged, flowing and carefully massaged drinking experience that drapes over the senses with some studied intensity and lots of intriguing complexity. This wine nails that perfect balance between power and elegance (that elusive exchange that so many winemakers hope to achieve) with effortless precision. Bold cherry fruit and spice are tightly woven together. In the mouth, the wine shows texture, depth and succulence. Generally speaking, this is not my favorite vintage in Montalcino, but this wine suddenly made me forget that thought.”

Campi di Fonterenza Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $108, that’s $102.60 at 5% off and $97.20 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’Keefe 96 points
“Forest floor, new leather and oak-driven spice aromas mingle with ripe berry. Elegantly structured, the smooth, bright palate delivers ripe Morello cherry, blood orange, crushed mint and almond liqueur framed in tightly knit, close-grained tannins. It’s structured and balanced, with bright acidity.”

Il Poggione is a classic Brunello producer working with very traditional methods in the subzone of Sant’Angelo in Colle, a region that tends to produce wines with big, bold personalities. The results are both crowd pleasing (rich fruit, up front aromatics) and intellectually stimulating (age-worthy, not obstructed by new oak) in way that’s unique in Brunello –outside of names that trade for significantly more money per bottle.

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $74.50, that’s $70.78 at 5% off and $67.05 at 10% off, 11 bottles in stock now

“Underbrush, camphor and new leather aromas get together with grilled herbs. Full-bodied and structured, it also shows restraint, featuring dried black cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside firm, fine-grained tannins.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino opens to a saturated and shiny dark ruby color. This edition is loaded with black and purple fruits, such as blackberry preserves and plum. Those more robust tones are followed by spice, tar and campfire ash. The tannins are young (but not stemmy or bitter), and you’d be best served by letting this wine age and relax with more cellar aging. Il Poggione always makes some of the smoothest and most texturally enriched wines in the appellation, and this vintage is no exception.”

La Fortuna is a top producer of Brunello, having turned their small (11 hectare) estate into one of the most consistently excellent in all of Tuscany. Stylistically the wines lean modern, with rich, ripe fruit and plush textures. But they also maintain an earthiness that keeps them grounded, allowing them to age beautifully. It is no wonder that these wines have developed such a following over the years.

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2016 750ml Displayed Price: $99, that’s $94.05 at 5% off and $89.10 at 10% off, 19 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The La Fortuna 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a wine of pretty Sangiovese purity. This Riserva (with 9,000 bottles produced) shows a darkly saturated color with plump and intense aromas of wild cherry, crushed flowers, fresh plums, spice and ferrous earth. Balsam herb and rosemary-like aromas round off the finish. There is great freshness, some oak tannins, a drying finish and lots of rich fruit fiber. This is a terrific wine from La Fortuna (although I need to point out the high 15.5% alcohol).”

La Gerla makes fantastic and approachable Brunello in a traditional style. The wines always have a striking purity of fruit and elegant structures, without the new oak flavors common to many modernist Brunellos.

La Gerla La Pieve, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $69, that’s $65.55 at 5% off and $62.10 at 10% off, 21 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 94 points
“With intensity to the cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit, this red is shaded with elements of tobacco, earth and wild herbs. Dusty tannins and lively acidity provide support, while a mineral component gathers steam on the salty, lingering finish. Best from 2026 through 2043. 1,167 cases made, 740 cases imported.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 94 points “The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino La Pieve opens with a mentholated freshness, blending dust rose with crushed stones and dried cherries. This displays silky textures contrasted by cooling acidity and minerals as tart red fruits slowly saturate. The 2019 leaves the palate caked in edgy tannins as it takes on a balsamic tinge and traces of clove slowly fade. La Pieve displays a classic fell yet also a hulking structural core. Bury your bottles deep.”

“Smoldering with remarkable depth, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Gli Angeli makes itself known with a blend of spicy citrus peels and minty herbs giving way to masses of black cherry, strawberries, hints of iodine and smoke. This is a textural thrill ride, velvety and almost weighty in feel, while finding wonderful balance in its vibrant acidity and the tart wild berry fruits and savory spices that are unleashed upon the palate. Hints of mocha combine with sour cherry and almond paste through the impressively long and classically structured finale. In the end, the 2016 Gli Angeli is the total package. This Riserva is a single-vineyard bottling from La Gerla’s northern Montalcino vineyard, which was planted by Biondi-Santi in 1968.”

Lisini is a classic producer, both in style and in that they were one of the original 25 wineries in the Brunello Consortium. They’re known for powerful wines that see extensive aging in large casks and bottle before release, which softens their textures and gives them wonderful secondary flavors. These are reference-point Brunellos that belong in the cellar of any collector.

Lisini Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $64.50, that’s $61.28 at 5% off and $58.05 at 10% off, 15 bottles in stock now

“Leafy underbrush, earth and dusty mineral notes frame the core of cherry and raspberry flavors in this succulent red, which is supple, with a layer of chewy, chalky tannins coating the finish. Balanced overall, with a long, cherry-infused aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2043. 3,290 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.”

Mastrojanni Vigna Loreto, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 750ml Was $125, Displayed Price: $115, that’s $109.25 at 5% off and $103.50 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points
“The Mastrojanni 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto shows a creamy and robust constitution with loads of black fruit and spice. If you are looking for a soft and more contemporary expression of Sangiovese, this will fit the bill. It offers profound richness and texture that is laced with black fruit, spice and tobacco. This wine moves one step beyond the comforting boundaries of Brunello in terms of both richness and extraction. If you are going to go big, you might as well do so in style. Only 8,000 bottles were released in January 2020.”
Eric Guido-Vinous 96 points “Mastrojanni’s 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto shows depths of dusty red berry fruit and subtle spice, with minty herbs, crushed stone, sweet tobacco and the slightest hint of animal musk, all in a remarkably pretty expression. On the palate, I find silky textures with cool-toned red fruits, savory spice, saline-minerals, and energizing acidity, in an expression that is both polished yet also firmly rooted in the earth, as it glides effortlessly across the senses. The finish is long, showing ripe red fruits, salty-savory-minerals, leather, and wonderfully balanced tannins. It is so pleasurable already, yet full of potential.”

“Giancarlo Pacenti is by far the leading exponent of the modern school of Brunello di Montalcino.  No other producer has succeeded in crafting wines of this much textural beauty and refinement.” – Antonio Galloni

Siro Pacenti PS Vecchie Vigne, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $113.50, that’s $107.83 at 5% off and $102.15 at 10% off, 13 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 99 points
“Black cherries, lavender, black mushrooms, lead pencil and violets on the nose. Full-bodied with a powerful and polished tannin structure that follows through to the very end. Pure, silky texture. Fascinating aftertaste of ripe fruit, yet it’s fresh and tense. Some orange peel, too. Glorious at the end. So well crafted and pointed. This needs another three to five years to integrate but already extremely impressive.”

“The Talenti winery is one of the handful of producers that managed to cull some magic from the 2017 vintage.” –Eric Guido, Vinous

Talenti Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017 750ml Displayed Price: $49, that’s $46.55 at 5% off and $44.10 at 10% off, 36+ bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous 93 points
“The bouquet on the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is to die for, offering cloves and balsamic spices that give way to crushed cherries, sage and fresh mint. It’s elegant yet lifted in feel, with silky textures carrying the ripe wild berry fruits effortlessly across the palate. Saline-minerals combine with grippy tannins toward the close, slowing the 2017’s momentum ever so slightly, yet still permitting the most beautiful display of hard red candies and violet florals to linger incredibly long. What a gorgeous 2017, and with short-term cellaring potential as well. Of note is that Talenti’s production was down by 25% due to the conditions of the vintage, and there will not be a Riserva, as all of the juice went to the Brunello.”
