Domaine de Montille
Etienne de Montille

Today we have some classic Burgundy for you from one of the Cote’s most iconic estates. With history tracining all the way back to the early 18th century, the Montille family has been producing fine red and white Burgundy at a premier level few have matched. Most notably associated with the village of Volnay, the family has made wine from numerous appellations, even at one time owning a portion of Musigny and Bonnes Mares.

In more modern history, the family’s winemaking tradition gained prominence under the leadership of Hubert de Montille, who took over the estate in 1947. At that time, the family holdings were relatively modest, but Hubert’s vision and dedication to traditional Burgundy winemaking techniques laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected wine estates in the region. He was known for his insistence on low yields, organic farming, and the production of wines that were meant to age, often requiring years in the bottle to fully express their potential.

Hubert de Montille’s approach was characterized by a focus on terroir, with the belief that the unique characteristics of each vineyard should be allowed to shine through in the wines. This philosophy led to a range of wines that are distinctively expressive of their origin, with each bottling reflecting the nuances of the specific vineyard site. Their reds, particularly from Volnay and Pommard, are known for their elegance, structure, and complexity, while their whites from Puligny-Montrachet are celebrated for their precision, minerality, and vibrant acidity.

In the early 2000s, the torch was passed to Hubert’s children, Étienne and Alix de Montille, who have continued to build on their father’s legacy while also bringing their own innovations to the estate. Étienne, who manages the estate today, has expanded the family’s vineyard holdings and modernized certain aspects of the winemaking process, while still adhering to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming.

“Showing pronounced cassis and plum fruit, with a floral edge and a hint of pepper. The full body and supple tannins are enlivened by a bright acidity to produce a very energetic impression on the palate. Good extract and length. The 1.26ha de Montille parcel of Beaune Grèves is just south of Bouchard’s Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus. The vines here are almost 50 years old. The fruit ripened extremely well in 2020 and the grapes were fermented with nearly 50% whole-cluster before ageing in 25% new casks.”

“Bright pomegranate and black cherry aromas, with floral notes and a hint of spice. There is plenty of freshness and a slightly rustic, tannic edge on the palate, yet the wine is showing nicely and should age well over the mid-term. De Montille has 1.62ha in Beaune Sizies at the foot of the slope in fairly deep clay soils. Picking started early here, yet there is nothing tart or astringent about the wine. The grapes were vinified with one-third whole-cluster and aged in 15% new casks.”

“Super-ripe blackberry and plum fruit touched with leather, spice and smoke. The texture is impressively dense and concentrated, yet the wine never loses its silky elegance which lingers invitingly on the long finish. This is a really impressive Corton Clos du Roi. The domaine owns a parcel of 0.83ha in the centre of the vineyard at mid-slope. The organic-certified vines are fermented with a substantial proportion of whole clusters and aged in 30% new casks. Drinking Window: 2025-2060.”

“From the north side of Pommard above Les Grands Epenots on active limestone soil; vinified with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new oak): Good dark red. Tight aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and rust (there’s a bit of iron in the soil here as well), lifted by a floral quality. Savory and fine-grained, with red berry flavors enlivened by saline minerality. Not a big wine but offers an attractive blend of sweet, savory and acidic elements. This minerally, salty wine finishes with big, mouth-dusting tannins.”

Domaine de Montille Aux Thorey, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $119, that’s $113.05 at 5% off and $107.10 at 10% off, 4 bottles in stock now

“Grapes were fermented with 50% whole clusters to give this slightly rustic wine a deep blackberry fruit, firm tannins and moderate length. The domaine acquired this parcel of 0.73ha from Dujac who had purchased it in the Moillard acquisition. The vines are situated fairly high on the slope with a southeast exposition, just to the south of Chaignots in sandy soils with a chalky profile.”

Domaine de Montille Les Rugiens-Bas, Pommard Premier Cru 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $149, that’s $141.55 at 5% off and $134.10 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now

“(completely destemmed): Healthy deep, bright red. Very expressive, slightly metallic perfume of red berries and iron. Delivers a stimulating combination of sweet, almost candied fruits and penetrating acidity, with an herbal element contributing to the impression of inner-mouth lift. This very savory, intense Rugiens finishes a bit tough; in fact, it went into a shell in the glass.”
Burghound 90-92 points “A subtle hint of wood serves as a backdrop to the very fresh, spicy and ripe nose of exotic tea and black fruit liqueur aromas. There is a lovely sense of tension to the stony, intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that possess notably better balance and length on the complex finish.”
