This “mineral-drenched” number hails from the W. S. Keyes vineyard founded in 1888, which sits high above the fog line at 1,825 feet in elevation with nearly-inhospitable soils of white volcanic rock and red clay.
La Jota Vineyard W. S. Keyes Chardonnay, Howell Mountain 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $109, that’s $103.55 at 5% off and $98.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
No review available for the 2020 vintage. 2019 review provided for reference.
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The excellent 2019 Chardonnay W.S. Keyes is a different style of Napa Chard, with only 10% new French oak puncheons and no malolactic fermentation, there’s a delicate wood influence akin to pencil shavings, with more emphasis placed on pear, apple and citrus notes. Medium-bodied, this is a crisp, lean and focused effort that retains a pleasantly silky feel and plenty of length.”

Étienne de Montille’s (of Domaine de Montille) project in California that’s turning heads and captivating hearts with its soulful and precise wines
Racines ‘Sta. Rita Hills Cuvee’ Chardonnay 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $55, that’s $52.25 at 5% off and $49.50 at 10% off, 22 bottles in stock now
Decanter 93 points
“A wonderfully complex wine with ample texture. The Sta Rita Hills Cuvée is sourced from some of Santa Barbara’s top Chardonnay sites. The wine sees very little new oak and, as a result, shines forth with delicate brilliance—classically cool climate Chardonnay aromatics of soft white florals, crushed chalk and a touch of mint. The palate has verve and energy with savoury petrichor-driven minerality coming to the fore, followed on by bruised apples, a touch of cardamom and honey to finish adding depth and complexity along the way.”

A customer favorite estate for over a decade, this is a classic
Stonestreet Estate Vineyards Chardonnay, Alexander Valley 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $41.90, that’s $39.81 at 5% off and $37.71 at 10% off, 34 bottles in stock now
Erin Brooks-Wine Advocate 95 points
“The 2019 Chardonnay Estate, matured for 10 months in 33% new oak, is beautiful straight from the bottle. It’s scented of baked apples, allspice, chamomile and meringue plus top notes of flint and lemon. The medium-bodied palate has an alluring balance of textural grip and freshness that drives its concentrated, savory flavors, and it has a very long, gently honeyed finish. 1,738 cases were made.”

Pinot Noir:

Balance is the name of the game here, with this affordable and charming PN
Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir 2021 750ml Displayed Price: $19, that’s $18.05 at 5% off and $17.10 at 10% off, 7 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“In 1975, legendary vintner and American wine pioneer Josh Jensen founded Calera (Spanish for “lime kiln”) high in the remote Gavilan Mountains of California’s windswept Central Coast. There, in Mt. Harlan’s low-yielding, limestone-rich soils and cool, arid climate, he began planting what would ultimately become six small estate vineyards. Today, these vineyards are recognized as some of the New World’s most revered Pinot Noir sites.
“Calera is a vision, and Calera’s wines truly express the sense of place. Rather than follow the recommended path, Josh Jensen became a pioneer in American Pinot Noir. Taking his cue from the great domaines of Burgundy, which have grown grapes in limestone soil for centuries, he set out in search of the perfect spot in California to create wines unique to the world but in the style of the greatest wines of France. Site selection was vital as he ventured off the grid to plant on the site of an old limekiln in the Gavilan Mountains of California’s Central Coast.”

Sanford Winery Pinot Noir, Sta Rita Hills 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $33, that’s $31.35 at 5% off and $29.70 at 10% off, 18 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“The entry level 2020 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills comes from a mix of the Rinconada and Sanford & Benedict vineyards and spent 11 months in 27% new French oak. This ruby-hued effort gives up a gorgeous perfume of ripe raspberry and strawberry fruits as well as white flowers, spice, and a touch of chalky, mineral-like nuances. Medium-bodied, seamless, and balanced on the palate, it’s just a flat-out beautiful expression of Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.”

Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot & Bordeaux-Style Blends:

A seriously delicious red from the fore-runners of the “New California” movement

Antonio Galloni-Vinous 92 points
“The 2022 Red Wine California is a very pleasant, fruity wine, especially in this vintage. About 50% of the wine was aged in cement. That, along with early bottling, preserves forward fruit and a good bit of freshness. Sweet floral and spice notes lift the mid-palate and finish.”

Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“The flagship 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon checks in as 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot brought up in 40% new French oak. With an essence of Cabernet-like character in its darker currants, green tobacco, cedar, graphite, and floral aromas and flavors, this gorgeous wine is full-bodied and has bright yet integrated acidity, polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s just gorgeously put together and a magical, flawless wine. It’s going to take a decade to hit maturity but will evolve for 40-50 years in cold cellars. It is as good as it gets in classic, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon!”

The palate is full-bodied, rich and seductive with incredibly perfumed fruit and a satiny texture, finishing very long.”

“Blended from 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot, this elegant, balanced wine offers red fruit, racy tannins, minerality and fresh and crunchy blackcurrants on a full body. Fine-grained tannins enhance the wine’s cool and compact character. Drink or hold.”

“This is very perfumed with blackberry and pine-cone aromas, as well as raspberries and black cherries. Full-bodied with firm, velvety tannins that are tight-grained. Creamy and beautiful. Currant and graphite flavors come through. Lightly chewy at the end. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot, 14% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. Drink after 2025.”

A classic Cali Cab from a “once in a generation, modern day classic” vintage in the region, per Vinous
Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, Stags Leap District 2013 750ml Displayed Price: $289, that’s $274.55 at 5% off and $260.10 at 10% off, 6 bottles in stock now
Robert M. Parker Jr.-Wine Advocate 98+ points
“The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select will probably hit the magic three-digit score, but it is a more backward style of wine, although probably even more concentrated than the 2012, and that’s saying something. Fabulous potential of 30-50 years is evident in this profound bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon that is inky blue/black to the rim and offers up notes of charcoal embers, scorched earth, blackberries, cassis, blueberries, a hint of coffee, and background barrique smells. Massively concentrated but incredibly elegant and poised, this is a wine of great energy and vibrancy. It is fabulously deep, built like a skyscraper, and set for an incredibly long life. Try not to consume a bottle for at least another 4-5 years and then watch the magic unfold.”

James Suckling 99 points
“Blackberry and black chocolate with mint, conifer and clove. Sweet tobacco, violets and flowers, too. Some graphite. Cool and complex. Full-bodied with ultra-fine, dusty tannins and a wonderful, extremely long finish. Savory and refined. A classic-styled 2018. This needs time, but is so approachable and gorgeous. One of the best Insignias ever. Alive and changing all the time. Leave this for five or six years, but so wonderful now.”
Wine Enthusiast 98 points “This is an exceptional vintage of this exceptional wine, its foundation built around 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, with dustings of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Beautiful in berry fruit, textured and refined tannin and hints of lavender, licorice and sage, it has complexity and energy in equal measure, lengthy and beautifully focused, a truly impressive achievement of site, vintage and winemaker.”
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97 points “Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes storming out of the glass with powerful notes of blackcurrant cordial, stewed black plums and boysenberries, plus hints of cedar chest, graphite, menthol and wet slate with a fragrant waft of clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate already demonstrates remarkable balance at this youthful stage, featuring a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the tightly wound, crunchy black fruits, finishing long and spicy.”

A “sumptuous” yet “racy” Merlot with “tons of depth and plenty of stylishness,” per Antonio Galloni

Soar the rapturous heights of Napa
Screaming Eagle ‘The Flight’, Napa Valley 2019 750ml Was $1,099, Displayed Price: $999, that’s $949.05 at 5% off and $899.10 at 10% off, 3 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 99 points
“Extremely floral and aromatic with violets and lavender throughout. Black olives, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, very fine-grained tannins that run the length of the wine. Goes on for minutes. A greenish undertone comes out at the end with some spearmint, green tea and green olive. About two-thirds merlot. Best after 2028, but already stunning.”

Syrah / Grenache & Rhone-Style Blends:

Sine Qua Non Into The Dark Grenache, Sta Rita Hills 2004 1.5L Displayed Price: $1,399, that’s $1,329.05 at 5% off and $1,259.10 at 10% off, 1 magnum in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck-Wine Advocate 99 points
“More up-front and open-knit, the 2004 Into the Dark (Grenache) checks in as a blend of 84% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre, 7% Syrah and 1% Viognier that comes mostly from Manfred’s 11 Confessions Vineyard, yet includes small portions from Alban (10%) and Alta Mesa (9%) Vineyard. Reminding me of Clos Saint-Jean’s Sanctus Sanctorum with its incredible bouquet of sweet kirsch, licorice, dried baking spices, graphite and ground pepper, this beauty flows onto the palate with impeccable purity, perfect integration of its fruit, tannin and acidity, and blockbuster length. As is common with this estate’s wine, it’s the purity paired with serious richness that sets it apart. While still youthful and benefiting from a healthy decadence, I think it’s drinking at point and would aim to drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years. It will evolve gracefully for longer, but I see no reason to hold off.-JD”

“The 2021 Syrah The Bench Vineyard is silky, layered and exceptionally beautiful. Inky blue/purplish fruit, licorice, lavender, black pepper and mint all race out of the glass. The 2021 is a bit lighter than some of the other wines in the range. In exchange, though, it will drink well upon release.”
