Cascina delle Rose

Your Three-Day Discount Starts Now

“Cascina delle Rose is without question one of the emerging estates in Barbaresco. Readers who have not tasted these wines should make a point of doing so, as they encapsulate everything that makes Barbaresco so alluring.” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Although Cascina delle Rose flies under the radar for most, those that know or have visited the estate buy the wines in bulk. These are charming and soulful wines that are easy to love, drink, and enjoy. The winemaking here is extremely traditional, and the vineyard management is fully organic.

To be sure, the Cascina delle Rose wines aren’t made for power. These are wines that strive for beauty and achieve it without sacrificing their drinkability and the ability to satisfy. They offer soaring aromatics and beautiful textures—and are surprisingly age-worthy for such ethereal bottlings.

The Rizzolio family purchased the estate in the 1940s, but didn’t produce commercial releases until the 1980s when the vines were mature enough to offer consistent and complex crops. Today, the estate is helmed by Giovanna Rizzolio alongside her partner, Italo Sobrino, and their sons, Riccardo and Davide.

The winery crafts two single-vineyard Barbaresco expressions: the Tre Stelle and the Rio Sordo. The Tre Stelle is the signature of the estate with its calcareous soils. They are the only winery to bottle this as a cru. The wine offers more immediacy than its sibling with a limestone-imparted elegance. The Rio Sordo tends towards shyness at first, but give this a bit longer in the cellar and it will reward with class and precision.

As with most of the Piemonte, Cascina delle Rose has excelled in recent vintages, producing some of the best wines in the history of the winery. Lovers of boutique Piedmontese producers take note—this is an admirable family estate doing all the right things.

Cascina delle Rose Barbaresco Rio Sordo, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $74.50, that’s $70.78 at 5% off and $67.05 at 10% off, 28 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“This is Cascina delle Rose’s other single-vineyard wine from a second nearby site in the village of Barbaresco. The 2020 Barbaresco Rio Sordo is slightly more linear and streamlined compared to the Tre Stelle in this vintage. That wine felt more immediate to me, but the Rio Sordo feels more long-term thanks to elegant fruit, crushed stone and sweet licorice aromas it offers.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2020 Barbaresco Rio Sordo is quite a bit more reticent than the Tre Stelle. Bright acids and insistent tannins cut through a core of dark-fleshed fruit. There’s a feeling of youthful austerity that renders this super classic in feel. The 2020 is going to need some time to come together, but it is super impressive. I especially admire the translucent energy here.”

Cascina delle Rose Tre Stelle, Barbaresco DOCG 2019 750ml Displayed Price: $75, that’s $71.25 at 5% off and $67.50 at 10% off, 9 bottles in stock now
Kerin O’Keefe 97 points
“All about finesse and showing Nebbiolo’s gentler side, Cascina delle Rose’s 2019 Barbaresco Tre Stelle offers mesmerizing aromas of woodland berry, blue flower, camphor and pine forest. Linear and vibrant, the focused palate features juicy red cherry, raspberry and star anise framed in lithe, refined tannins. It’s energized and beautifully balanced, with bright acidity Drink 2025-2039.”
Winery note “The soils are of marine origin from the Tertiary era, characterized by outcropping bluish marls, lean, calcareous, compact lands. The stratification is dense and complex, rich in mineral salts and natural springs. The Barbaresco Tre Stelle is the result of the best exposure of this geographical mention. 100% Nebbiolo grapes. Great character, undoubted finesse and femininity together for a long-lived wine of surprising pleasantness even when young thanks to the dense, snappy and silky tannic texture. Garnet red in color, elegant notes of rose and violet, red berries, a vein of fresh minerality, snappy and silky tannins. Long, persistent finish. Nebbiolo in all its beauty.”

Cascina delle Rose Tre Stelle, Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml Displayed Price: $74.50, that’s $70.78 at 5% off and $67.05 at 10% off, 23 bottles in stock now
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2020 Barbaresco Tre Stelle is a delight to drink. The character of this vintage is more accessible for sure, and the fruit is very bright and supple. But there’s no harm in drinking this warm-vintage release of 7,500 bottles on the early side while all its primary aromas are so intact and enticing. The tannins are soft, and the wine shows medium richness to close.”
Antonio Galloni-Vinous 93 points “The 2020 Barbaresco Tre Stelle is a racy, sensual wine. Soft contours wrap around a core of sweet dried cherry, mint, cinnamon, cedar, new leather and rose petal. Already quite open, the 2020 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Sweet floral top notes lift the finish. This is nicely done.”

Cascina delle Rose Barbera d’Alba, Piedmont 2018 750ml Displayed Price: $24, that’s $22.80 at 5% off and $21.60 at 10% off, 2 bottles in stock now
“Here is a comparably food-friendly red wine to pair with simple roast meats or risotto with wild mushrooms. The Cascina delle Rose 2018 Barbera d’Alba is an easier wine when contrasted with the Barbera d’Alba Superiore Donna Elena from 2017 that I also tasted in this report. Yet this wine does not show that jammy ripeness that you get in the Superiore and ultimately shows more balance as a result. There is some softness with dried blackberry and Morello cherry, but the cooler 2018 vintage manages those aromas with more precision and a softer touch. Some 4,500 bottles were released.” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

“The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is an attractive entry-level offering. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, kirsch, mint and white pepper are nicely delineated. The 2022 was raise mostly in tank, with a touch of cement” –Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Winery note
“Arneis; 100% stainless steel. Mun Crü – in Piedmontese dialect, literally “raw bricks” – is the name that has always been used to indicate this particular area of Neive. As the production is very limited, it is always offered first to our historical customers. Sensory notes: Bright and intense yellow, with golden reflections. Elegant floral notes, jasmine, hints of sweet citrus peel, white peach and acacia honey. Intriguing structure, full of flavors. Round and balanced, savory and with a long finish.”

Prime Drinking Time for Schätzel ‘17s

Though the Rheinhessen fell out of favor post-WWII, Schätzel was one of the few families to hold to tradition. They kept the candle of quality burning, so to speak, until attitudes, climate, and renewed interest in Riesling returned. (Having been Rheinhessen Riesling wine makers for 650 years, the family understand patience.) Kai Schätzel is the current family member to head the estate (what generation that makes him is practically too high to estimate).

Talented, ambitious, and a member of the VDP, Schätzel makes compelling wines from some of the finest vineyards in the Rheinhessen. As owner and winemaker, Kai Schätzel works in a reductive, mineral-driven style, taking queues from Burgundy. These top-class wines are age-worthy and profound—well capable of holding their own with other top echelon producers in Germany. He’s a humble artist, though. Whenever he speaks about his wines, he emphasizes the microclimates, terroir, and sustainable growing techniques (all vineyards are certified organic). So, pop a bottle of ancient, steadfast history. We know you’ll want to listen in.

“Schätzel is one of the most exciting Riesling producers along the Rhine River and even if you don’t like his firmly structured and straightforward Rieslings and gorgeous Sylvaners when young, you will be impressed by their mouth-filling and structured character after a couple of years… Riesling lovers have to check out this domaine.” –Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Sadly, due to high demand in Germany, very little is imported to the USA, per David Schildknecht, so this may be your only opportunity to enjoy these wines!

“This Riesling, from red slate soil on ultra-steep, south-facing slopes, ferments and matures in a 670-year-old cellar to produce a floral, fresh and pure vineyard wine, with just 7.5% abv, the 42g/l sugar and 11.5g/l acidity in perfect balance. Quite lovely.”
Stuart Pigott (Suckling) 92 points “So much freshness and energy with tons of elderflowers and white fruit. Super-crisp and very clean palate and a breathtaking finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

Weingut Schätzel Nierstein Silvaner 2017 750ml Was $29, Now $24 special, 11 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 90 points
“This legally dry bottling essentially represents the Silvaner from Hipping that served as a major component of Schätzel’s “Naturweiss” cuvée. The nose is subtly inflected by the mineral and cereal notes that subsequently achieve prominence on the palate, but there are also hints of iris and lemon zest. Buoyant (at 11% alcohol) and caressingly polished, the wine brims with pear fruit and bittersweet inner-mouth floral perfume, accented by oregano, lemon peel, milled wheat and a characteristic Nierstein red slope smoky sense of stone suffusion. There is more than enough freshness and primary juiciness to the lingering finish, if marginally less sense of animation than displayed by Schätzel’s Querkopf Silvaner bottling sourced from ancient vines in the Nackenheimer Rotenberg.”
