Domaine Collotte: Marsannay’s Finest 2-14-24

The Country’s Best Prices Got Even Better

“Collotte remains one of the most under the radar growers in Marsannay. At their best, these wines are striking for their purity of fruit and overall sense of harmony.” –Antonio Galloni

“…Philippe Collotte [is a] tall, quiet man, but with a lot of passion to make superb wines just waiting to be unleashed. Producing lower yields, more selection before and at harvest, de-stemmed fruit, and, for us, he bottles everything unfiltered. His Bourgogne parcel was planted in 1947 and there are 5 parcels of 50+ year old vines in his super-value Marsannay VV. Indeed all of the Marsannay single vineyard cuvées are old vines. Tillage is all done by plowing, no chemical weed-killers ever used, and the philosophy is that a lot of work in the vines promotes healthy grapes for excellent wine. Collotte’s yields are well below the appellation’s allowances. All fermentations are only done with indigenous yeasts. Philippe’s daughter, Isabelle, has completed viticulture school and has joined her father in the domaine. Her specialty is making the family’s superb Marsannay blancs. The wines produced by the Collottes are some of the best kept secrets in our portfolio.” -Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler Importing

While pricing keeps ticking up among top names in Burgundy, value is still to be found, especially in overlooked villages like Marsannay in warmer vintages such as 2018 and 2020. What makes these wines excel in difficult years? This is the northern-most village in Burgundy and as such, warmer vintages are tempered by the naturally cool climate. Historically, the vineyard and village classifications have been based on consistent ripeness and power, as well as complexity, so in a warm year the “lesser” sites often show much more dramatic improvement over their baseline quality than a “great” vineyard will.

Domaine Collotte stands out amongst its peers in the village due to the profound age of its vines. Even the Bourgogne Rouge produced chez Collotte is notable for being sourced from vines planted in 1947 just outside the border of Marsannay.

We’ve made it easy for you to stock up on these wines across the board by placing them on our three-day sale despite already offering them at the lowest prices in the country. They’re incredibly well-priced, from old vines on great soil and made by a real craftsman. Don’t miss.

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91 points “Vivid orange-pink. Fresh red berries, candied rose and a dusty mineral nuance on the fragrant nose. Gently chewy and tightly wound on entry, then more fleshy in the mid-palate, displaying juicy cherry and tangerine flavors that turn sweeter on the back half. The floral note repeats on a long, focused finish that leaves a refreshingly bitter suggestion of cherry pit behind.”
Importer note “Pinot Noir from clay & limestone soils. Sustainable. Ripe pomegranate, strawberries and raspberries. Medium body.”
VinopolNote: Marsannay is the only village in Burgundy that permits rosé bottled under its AOC.  As you might expect, the rosé from the village is outstanding stuff and Domaine Collotte’s offers excellent value (just like their reds, for what that’s worth).  Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the Marsannay rosé shows the dry and serious side of the genre, while managing to be delicious and fresh at the same time.  If you love Pinot rosé from the Willamette Valley, you owe it to yourself to try the original.

Surprisingly for an entry-level red, this bottling is from a parcel planted with the oldest vines of the estate: 71-year-old vines grown on pebbly Cailloux soil.
Importer note “Bourgogne ‘Noble Souché’ translates to the ‘noble vine’ from almost 70 year old vines planted in 1947 on Marsannay Cailloux soil from Champforeys. Entirely, de-estemmed, slow fermentation with 5 days of pre-maceration. Aged for 11 months 90% in stainless steel tank, this is a lovely, subtlety rich Côte de Nuits wine.”
