“Only a handful of Pinot Noirs in my experience have delivered greater beauty or more striking singularity [than Arterberry-Maresh].”
-David Schildknecht, Wine Advocate

Has anyone else in the Valley been this good for this long? Arterberry-Maresh, now in its second generation under winemaker Jim Maresh, has long been one of the most consistent producers of high end Oregon Pinot noir, but as recent vintages show, they have not been resting on their good name, instead making some of best wines (and receiving some of the best professional accolades) in the Willamette Valley’s history.

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2022 750ml $33 special, 36+ bottles available
Not reviewed yet, 2021 review provided for context
Wine Advocate 97 Points “The 2021 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills offers quality that sits well above its modest price tag with its pairing of concentrated flavors and a weightless frame. Medium ruby, it features cranberry sauce, pomegranate and rhubarb fruit with accents of tea leaves, lavender, bitter orange and amaro. The light-bodied palate is silky and seamless with an incredible core of flavor and a very long, bitters-laced finish. I would be excited to drink this wine any night of the week!”

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard 2021 750ml $72 special, 24 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98+ Points “The 2021 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard is an arresting wine that grows in bottle over several days, offering singular expression, purity and a touch of magic. Medium ruby, the nose is very complex and offers something new with each return to the glass. A deep core of pomegranate and cranberry sauce blossoms to orange peel, tea leaves, mossy bark and lilac with an array of amaro-like undertones. The palate is medium-bodied and has tremendously concentrated flavors for its harmonious, velvety frame (this sits at only 12.8% alcohol). Layered, dynamic and very long, it stands out as one of the best expressions of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir I’ve ever had the pleasure of tasting.”

Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Old Vines 2021 750ml $56.50 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 98 Points “The 2021 Pinot Noir Old Vines comes from the Maresh Vineyard, from vines that were planted in 1970, and has a singular expression with detailed, spicy accents reminiscent of bitters or amaro. “You only get those high-toned essences if you pick al dente,” winemaker Jim Maresh explains. “It’s easy to volatilize all that away.” The Old Vines has a medium ruby color and arresting aromas of orange bitters, mossy bark and tobacco leaves complementing a deep core of pomegranate, rhubarb and cranberry. The light-bodied palate offers remarkably pure, detailed flavors. It has velvety tannins, seamless freshness and a very long finish with a flourish of spicy accents.”

Arterberry Maresh Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard 2021 750ml $72 special, 30 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 Points “The 2021 Chardonnay Maresh Vineyard comes from Wente vines planted in 1983 and was matured in 20% Damy barrels for nine months before finishing in stainless steel. The nose is alluringly spicy, opening from flint and roasted almonds to an intense core of savory yellow peach and beeswax. The palate is satiny and unctuous with ripe fruit, floral perfume and flinty streaks. Despite its luxurious texture and flavor, it maintains its shimmery acidity and boasts a long, dynamic finish. It’s a special expression that offers pleasurable generosity and precision.”

“Château Lynch Bages, Bordeaux”

Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac 2018 750ml $189 special, 13 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 98 points  “One of the finest vintages I’ve ever tasted from this address, the 2018 Château Lynch-Bages has everything you look for in a great wine: incredible aromatics, richness without weight, perfect balance, and a purity of fruit that’s just about off the charts. Dense purple, it reveals a glorious perfume of blackcurrants and blackberry fruits, a deep, unctuous mouthfeel, building tannins, and a complex array of cedar pencil, tobacco, wood smoke, and chocolate. A true blockbuster in every sense, with masses of fruit and tannins as well as moderate acidity, it will probably merit a triple-digit score in a decade and is a 50+-year wine from this team.”
Wine Spectator 97 points “Vibrant, with a violet and cassis lead-in that then expands to include steeped black cherry and plum fruit as well as extra savory, iron and licorice root notes. Nice latent grip too, with a mouthwatering tug of earth at the very end. The fruit is so vibrant, it’s a tease now, but there’s structure here for the long haul, so be patient. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.”

Chateau Lynch Bages Pauillac 2019 750ml $219 special, only 1 bottle available
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points -#2 Top Wine of 2022- “The 2019 Château Lynch-Bages is stunningly good, and it’s going to be interesting to compare this to the 2018 over the coming decades. Based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 75% new French oak, its dense purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of pure crème de cassis, freshly sharpened cedar pencil, spring flowers, smoke, and graphite, with an almost liqueur of rocks-like minerality. A massive, incredibly concentrated Lynch-Bages, Jean-Charles has hit a home run in the vintage, and this sensational wine has building, perfect tannins, insane purity, and a finish that won’t quit. It has the purity, finesse, balance, and depth to offer pleasure not only today but to evolve for 40 to 50 years. Smart money will hide these for a good 7-8 years, but wow, what a wine. Bravo.”

“Domaine Camus Bruchon, Burgundy”
An impressive, under the radar producer from the Côte de Beaune, Guillaume Camus is crafting fresh and elegant Pinot Noirs from old vines dating before World War One. Of current weather and wine-making trends in Burgundy he says, “For years we have been striving to reduce yields, but now, at least in 2020 and 2021, we want higher yields to reduce concentration and gain more freshness.”

Domaine Camus Bruchon Savigny Les Lavieres 2020 750ml $44.50 special, 11 bottles available
Vinous 93 Points “The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru is matured in 25% new oak. It has a very perfumed bouquet with pressed rose petals infusing the red berry fruit, hints of cranberry and bergamot emerging with time, fine minerality too. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherries, crushed strawberry and light orange zest notes, the acidity lending real bite and energy towards the finish. Bon vin!”

Domaine Camus Bruchon Savigny Aux Gravains 2020 750ml $44.50 special, 11 bottles available
Vinous “The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Gravains 1er Cru, which comes from a parcel that can call Nathalie Tollot its neighbor, was showing just a touch of reduction on the nose, though the palette is medium-bodied with a sappy opening […] certainly fresh and with a welcome touch of pepperiness on the finish.”

Domaine Camus Bruchon Bourgogne Rouge 2020 750ml $28 special, 34 bottles available

Domaine Camus Bruchon Le Grand Saussy 2020 750ml $36.50 special, 12 bottles available
Vinous “Matured in used 500-litre barrels, the 2020 Chorey-les-Beaune Le Grand Saussy offers slightly earthy red berry fruit on the nose with a touch of bergamot.”

Domaine Camus Bruchon Cuvee Reine Joly 2020 750ml $36.50 special, 24 bottles available
Vinous “The 2020 Savigny-les-Beaune Cuvee Reine Joly, a blend of six parcels, offers pure raspberry and wild strawberry scented on the nose, a hint of pressed rose petal.”

“Domaine Berthet-Capeau, Rhone”

Domaine Berthet-Capeau Exil Des Papes 2018 750ml $33 special, 11 bottles available
Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider Critic “Ripe cherries, flowers, cocoa and herbal aromatics dominate the nose. On the palate the wine is round, lush and soft, finishing with sweet, dark red cherries and dusty tannins in the finish. The wine was produced using 100% old vine Grenache.”

Italy

Ar.Pe.Pe Grumello Sant’antonio Riserva 2013 750ml $99 special, 7 bottles available
Vinous 95 Points “The 2013 Valtellina Superiore Grumello Riserva Sant’Antonio is a bold, pungent wine. Dark red and purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice race across the palate. A deep, vertical Riserva, the 2013 is very young today, but it is so impressive. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s striking inner perfume, sweetness and sheer pedigree.”

Spain

Lustau Fino En Rama El De Jerez NV (2021 edition) 500ml $24 special, 14 bottles available
Importer’s Note The inland climate in the town of Jerez de la Frontera has an important influence in the development of the Finos from this area. Its long, hot summers and mild but wet winters provide a more rounded and fuller style of wine. This Fino, aged under “flor” in American oak casks for five years, was selected for its finesse and bottled without any treatment.

Hungary

Disznoko Tokaji Dry Inspiration 2018 750ml $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery Notes “Pale yellow with the greenish tint typical of the Furmint grape. Fresh and aromatic with hints of white flowers and grapefruit. A palate of exotic fruits with pear and quince followed by a lingering mineral, salty finish. Refreshingly elegant.”

“Evesham Wood, Salem OR”
2021 is another vintage that began with a warmer than average summer (it hit 118 in June!) but ended cooler than an average harvest. It resulted in a vintage with the richness of ‘18 but with ‘19’s pretty side — it’s built on poise rather than broad shoulders.

Evesham Wood Illahe Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $39 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Notes “The Ford’s continue to farm our blocks at Illahe Vineyard organically.  This year’s bottling again leans towards the savory side.  Bright cherry with raspberry, sweet tamarind, and earthy mushroom, medium weight and fine tannins.”

Evesham Wood Sojeau Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Notes “Bigger and broader than the Illahe with plum, raspberry pastille, blood orange and cranberry-spice bread. This is an especially energetic Sojeau. Only 70 Cases Produced.”

Evesham Wood Temperance Hill Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Notes “A true labor of love.  We always feel incredibly fortunate to get a handful of barrels from our 2 acre block at the very top of Temperance.  This is a well-fruited Temperance bottling with its classic top-notes of juniper and bay leaf before moving into cigar humidor moving to a energetic, mouth-filling mid-palate of red fruits and dried flowers.”

Evesham Wood Mahonia Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $44.50 special, 12 bottles available
Winery Notes “While we’ve worked with Mahonia for decades, this was the third year that it is our monopoly and we’re enjoying helping with farming and getting to use all its fruit! This is an especially good vintage. Savory with nori, black sesame, juniper, and medicinal roots, and nicely fruited with plum cordial, cassis, and blood orange zest.”

Evesham Wood Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $49 special, 36 bottles available
Winery Notes “What a gorgeous wine. The nose jumps out of the glass with concentrated aromas of plum, violet and berries. That lift and concentration carries through as the mixed berries become even more concentrated, while beautifully balanced bright acidity leads to moderate tannins on the finish. This is why Erin came to Le Puits Sec in 2007 and never left.”

Evesham Wood Cuvee J Pinot Noir 2021 750ml $59 special, 24 bottles available
Winery Notes “One of the greatest characteristics Russ finds in our proprietary yeast that he “isolated” from a bottle of 1986 Jayer Echezeaux is the velvety texture it imparts on the wines. While we use that yeast in every Pinot Noir we make, the texture it imparts is particularly notable in this wine. The 6 barrels selected from Le Puits Sec display a beautiful balance of elegance while also concentration and power.  Bright red berries, rhubarb, pomegranate molasses, and plum-frangipane tart that finishes with great length and haunting flowers.”

Pian Dell’orino Brunello Bassolino Sopra 2010 750ml WAS $599 NOW $499 special, 1 bottle still available
Wine Advocate 100 Points “The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is the equivalent of the estate’s Riserva. Only 3,000 bottles were made and the wine was not produced in 2009 or 2008. Nor will it be made in 2011 or 2013. Future editions are 2012 and 2015. Bassolino di Sopra is silky and smooth, but it also has a fine textural fabric that gives the wine an enormous sense of tactile intensity in terms of mouthfeel. This is a magnificent achievement with an extreme sense of purity and freshness that is elegant and streamlined. The bouquet reveals slight and miniature shifts in its evolution that keep your curiosity as you contemplate the wine in the glass. Wild berry is followed by a steady stream of balsam herb, cola, crushed oyster shell and delicate floral tones. The vineyards are located between 330 and 370 meters above sea level with limestone deposits and red soils. Farming is biodynamic.”
Antonio Galloni 97 Points “Pian dell’Orino 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra is shaping up to be another of the wines of the vintage. Lavender, spices, menthol, tobacco and dark stone fruits meld together in a vivid Brunello of extraordinary beauty. Tasted alongside the Versante Amiata, the Bassolino di Sopra presents darker tonalities of fruit, a more vertical sense of structure support by spine of firm tannin, and a powerful personality. The 2010 is a fascinating wine to follow, as it becomes weightless and refined with the passage of time. Sadly, I could not spend all afternoon with the Bassolino di Sopra, but this is a deep, contemplative Brunello that will thrill readers for many, many years.”

Pingus Dominio De Pingus 2019 750ml WAS $1,199 NOW $1,049 special, 3 bottles available
Wine Advocate 99 Points “I tasted the bottled 2019 Pingus two weeks after bottling. Even at this early stage and after the operation, the wine is super harmonious and elegant. They really outdid themselves here and produced an amazingly fresh, aromatic and harmonious wine in a warm vintage. It’s incredibly textured, with refined, very fine-grained and chalky tannins. It’s very balanced, and there’s no excess of anything; it has 14% alcohol, perfect ripeness and a velvety mouthfeel. It gets more floral with time in the glass, getting nuanced and really interesting. It delivers what the barrel sample promised one year ago, when the wine already surprised me. I think the word that best describes this wine is precision—it’s clean, focused, balanced and delineated. Bravo!”

Postmark By Duckhorn Paso Robles Cabernet 2019 750ml WAS $18 NOW $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Enthusiast 91 Points “Fresh and fruity aromas of cherry and strawberry meet with notes of French toast and light herbs on the nose of this bottling. Those juicy fruits come through on the palate as well, with a baked red-cherry flavor that is framed by cigar-box and nutmeg accents.”

Domaine Ray-Jane Vin De Pays Dur Var Rose 2021 750ml WAS $21.90 NOW $18 special, 10 bottles available

Okonomierat Rebholz PB GG Im Sonnenschein 2020 750ml WAS $119 NOW $99 special, 8 bottles available
Winemaker Notes “Typical for a wine from this location is the smoky, spicy note in the fragrance, which was shaped by the shell limestone soil. At the same time, the old Pinot Blanc vines bring out the smoothness and a fruit reminiscent of pears, tangerines and fennel. The basis of this world-class Burgundy is the full ripeness of the absolutely healthy grapes, some of which come from vines that are almost 40 years old. The interplay of minerality and grape ripeness is reflected in the pronounced salty, mineral character that makes the wine very “long” in the mouth. Our restrained expansion in stainless steel tanks brings an absolutely unadulterated wine to the fore, which shows a perfect interplay between tension, maturity, power, fruit, fullness and mineral acidity. Like all Rebholz wines, the wine has great storage potential.”

Remoissenet Chapelle Chambertin 2011 750ml WAS $249  NOW $219 special, 6 bottles available
93+ Points Antonio Galloni “The 2011 Chapelle-Chambertin is not lacking in personality, that much is obvious. A savory, almost wild Burgundy, the 2011 Chapelle is laced with dried herbs, tobacco, black cherries and cured meats are some of the notes that blossom in the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2011 goes; will it always remain a bit gamy, or will it find a bit more finesse in bottle?”

GD Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2017 750ml WAS $78 NOW $69 special, 26 bottles available
Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points “The 2017 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is the darker fruited of the G.D. Vajra sites and has rounded floral aromatics of crushed roses, resin, and cranberry cocktail. The palate is ripe and inviting, with building structure and notes of fresh red cherry, blood orange, and clove. The warmth of the vintage is felt without sacrificing lift. Drink 2025-2050”

GD Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2018 750ml WAS $79 NOW $69 special, 15 bottles available
#9 Top 100 Cellar Selections 2022 – Wine Enthusiast
Wine Enthusiast 95 Points “Cellar Selection. Heady aromas of violet, camphor, leather and tobacco lead the way on this fragrant red. On the palate, tightly knit, fine-grained tannins accompany ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry and licorice. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2025–2035.”

Christophe Baron “Les Alouettes” Brut Nature 2016 1.5L $259 special, 3 bottles in stock
Antonio Galloni 94 points “…ample and broad, with a real sense of volume that grows over time. Layered and beautifully resonant, the Alouttes is also the most sensual and immediate of these wines. Even with all of its intensity, the Alouttes is translucent and so expressive, even in the early going. Spice, dried pear, flowers and nutty accents linger.”

Christophe Baron “Les Alouettes” Brut Nature 2017 1.5L $259 special, 7 bottles in stock
Wine Advocate 95 points “…excellent, bursting with aromas of golden orchard fruit, warm spices, honeycomb, plums and toasted bread. Full-bodied, fleshy and vinous, it’s rich and sapid, with a layered core of fruit, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. Seamless and complete, this bottling is particularly strong this year.”

Christophe Baron Champagne Dessus Marie 2016 1.5L $279 special, 1 bottle in stock

Christophe Baron Champagne Dessus Marie 2017 1.5L $259 special, 2 bottles in stock
Vinous 96 points “…bright, focused and incredibly energetic. Soaring mineral and saline notes cut through a core of orchard fruit, citrus, white flowers, mint, crushed rocks and spice…  all the elements are there for it to be tremendous in a few years’ time. Actually, it already is. Floral and mineral notes reappear on the finish, adding notable lift.”

Christophe Baron Champagne Hautes Blanches 2017 1.5L $269 special, 5 bottles
Vinous 95 points “… a rich, burnished wine. Deep in color and intensity from tiny yields, the Hautes Blanches is a rich Champagne endowed with notable textural breadth and energy. Orange peel, hazelnut, dried flowers, chamomile, tangerine oil and light oxidative notes build in this powerhouse Meunier. The red fruit character of Meunier is so expressive. This is an especially vinous style, even for Christophe Baron.”

Keller Rieslaner Monsheimer Silberberg Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel 2018 375ml $219 special, 6 half bottles available
Vinopolnote “Rieslaner is a cross of Riesling and Sylanver. Rieslaner was bred for its potential for excellent botrytis concentration, which makes it an ideal Beerenauslese, but is also a specialty of Keller, who produces this wine in several styles.”

Keller Silvaner Feuervogel Trocken 2021 750ml $119 special, 2 bottles available
Vom Boden “Named after Igor Stravinsky’s Ballet “The Firebird.” 70 year old vines on limestone matured in the traditional large wooden barrels. A strikingly savory and mineral Silvaner.”

Molitor Erden Treppchen Auslese *** White Capsule 2019 750ml $119 special, 15 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98+ Points
“Partly from the Felsentreppe, the 2019 Erdener Treppchen Auslese *** (White Capsule) opens with a pure, fresh and flinty, iron-rich and  refined bouquet of tropical fruit aromas with notes of broken (red) slate, lemon oil and lemon juice. Fat but refined, this wine combines the incompatible. Round and wide as well as precise and piquant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and concentrated yet powerful, vibrantly fresh and persistently salty Riesling with cognac or whisky features due its oaky and iodine character. Highly vital and salty, very elegant and complex, vibrantly fresh, with seriously firm tannin grip and a generous tropical stone fruit aroma, this is a giant in the making, but it needs some years to celebrate its class. Any Meursault would honor this Mosel Riesling that has been aged in a 770-liter Stockinger vat and a Burgundy pièce.”

Molitor Urzige Wurzgarten Beerenauslese 2017 375ml $149 special, 8 bottles available
100 Points Wine Advocate
“The 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Beerenauslese opens with a very clear, elegant, highly aromatic and finessed bouquet of ripe tropical and domestic fruits intermixed with stony notes. On the palate, this is a lush and salty-piquant BA with great mineral vitality and lingering energy on the finish. What a filigreed, lean, finessed and light-footed sweet wine with refreshing grapefruit notes on the nose and palate. This is incredibly elegant and refined, and I can’t imagine this BA could have been done any better. It’s incredibly charming and will tickle your palate now and forever. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese*** GK 2013 375ml $149 special, 1 bottle available
Wine Advocate 100 Points
“The smoky slate aroma of the Sonnenuhr is still obvious in the beautifully clear, lush and delicate 2013 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** that offers pineapples, ripe apples and limes powdered with rock flour on the nose. The wine seems weightless on the palate, although it is nothing less than a sweet, sumptuously delicious and breathtakingly fine Auslese with perfectly ripe and painstakingly selected Riesling berries. The finish is intense in a very subtle way, lingeringly salty and piquant, and the purity and elegance in combination with the sensual fruit juice is absolutely delicious. This is an amazing wine.”

Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese*** GK 2017 750ml $299 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 100 Points “As always, Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) is one of the ripest and most concentrated Auslesen of the vintage. Incredibly clear and intense notes of ripe peaches and mangoes on the nonetheless delicate and fresh nose intertwine with noble slate, fine oak and nougat aromas. The wine is round and elegant on the palate, with stunning vivacious, filigreed acidity that gives it lightness, great finesse, lots of salt and tension and stimulating grip. This is still a baby, but in terms of complexity and finesse, it’s one of the finest wines Markus Molitor has produced in 2017. I cannot remember having tasted a three-starred Auslese from the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr that was so fresh, lean and filigreed. This 2017 Sonnenuhr is precise as a Swiss watch. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenhuhr Beerenauslese * 2017 750ml $399 special, 12 bottles available
Wine Advocate 100 Points “The 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * (Golden Capsule) is intense, fine and flinty on the highly precise nose with crunchy slate and grapefruit notes. Dense and concentrated on the palate, it has sweet but elegant and highly refined fruit intertwined with salty-finessed slate salinity and delicate acidity. This is a beautifully balanced BA from Molitor’s most important grand cru vineyard. Many readers might prefer its sweet and charming richness to the delicate finesse and crystallinity of the Würzgarten BA, which will be ready to drink sooner. But this Zeltinger Sonnenuhr in turn will gain even more finesse and drinkability over the years. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Molitor Zelt Sonnenuhr TBA GK 2019 750ml $499 special, 12 bottles available
Molitor Zelt Sonnenuhr TBA GK 2019 375ml $249 special, 18 bottles available
Wine Advocate 97 Points “The 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Trockenbeerenauslese is deep, intense and flinty on the nose that exhibits clear, ripe and concentrated fruit with very fine botrytis notes intertwined with aromas of crushed slate and candied lemon rind. Round and elegant on the seamless palate, this is a rich yet finessed and elegant, super tensioned and mineral TBA with electrifying acidity and a highly stimulating finish. There are not many TBAs around that are as digestible as this one, which is really extraordinary. 6.5% alcohol. Tasted in May 2021 (AP 29 20).”

Muller-Catoir Herzog Rieslander TBA 2018 375ml $99 special, 36+ bottles available
Winery Note “The Rieslaner Trockenbeerenauslese delights the nose with a virtual cornucopia of various herbal aromas, which treat the palate to a magnificent interaction between fruitiness and acidity and a finish that just doesn’t seem to want to end – a wine concentrate for eternity.”

Von Winning Jesuitengarten Riesling Grosses Gewach 2021 750ml $119 special, 6 bottles available
Importer’s Note “Jesuitengarten is located on the outskirt of Forst directly in the neighborhood of four other prime vineyards: Kirchsenstuck, Ungeheuer, & Pechstein.  Due to its high mineral content, optimal available water capacity, and diverse soils of calcareous and clay, sandy loam with limestone rubble, and in some places a high concentration of weathered basalt or humus, this is considered one of the very best vineyards in the Pfalz.”

Von Winning Pechstein Riesling Grosses Gewach 2021 750ml $119 special, 6 bottles available
Importer’s Note: “The name of “Pechstein” stems from the black basalt rubble that is found there together with weathered red sandstone, sandy loam and friable clay. The extinct volcano, Pechsteinkopf, which is seen above the forest, distributed large quantities of volcanic rock over the area in ancient times. For this reason, the subsoil of the Pechstein also contains several basalt veins. The basalt rubble that contributes to easy warming of this site actually does not stem from the site’s subsoil, but rather from an old stone quarry just a couple hundred meters away. As was common in the 19th century, the basalt from the quarry was distributed in the vineyard and ploughed into the soil to improve it. The 17.1 hectare Pechstein is located at 120 to 150 meters a.s.l. and has a gentle 6 to 10 % slope gradient. The clay and loam in the Pechstein contribute to the excellent water storage capacity of the soil.”
