Clos Erasmus

Arriving Friday

These are vines ranging in age from 37-60+ years old, grown biodynamically under the stewardship of Ester Nin since 2004. The parcels are scattered across the wild terrain near Gratallops in the heart of the Priorat. Here the slate soils collect in colorful fans that resemble smashed pottery. The varying aspects of each parcel’s microclimate are where the magic lies, spanning shallow valleys or climbing rough, terraced hillsides. The wines are crafted in the tiny, ancient village whose rustic charms first attracted winemaker, Daphne Glorian, and her cohorts Rene Barbier and Alvaro Palacios to the region in 1989.

Clos i Terrasses Clos Erasmus, Priorat DOCa 2019 750ML ($279.95) $228 pre-arrival special, only 18 bottles available
Daphne Glorian note, from Eric Solomon Selections
“2019 was a dramatic change from 2018, with little rain during the winter (less than 136 liters between January and September), resulting in a drought compounded by an unheard-of heatwave in June, with temperatures reaching 42 degrees (107 F.) for almost a week. But trust the vines of the Priorat. Even though the extreme temperatures of June hit them hard, they are used to harsh conditions, and they adapted, returning to their normal thrifty mode. The resulting volumes were, of course, almost 20% below those of 2018 but in line with the yields we often get, 18-19 hectolitres per hectare. Harvest began at the end of August with Syrah and finished only a day earlier than average on September 18th.  As expected, the combination of low yields and high temperatures speeded up the ripening process. The wines are a perfect example of Mediterranean varieties producing their best under challenging conditions. They are concentrated, solar, and yet velvety, with a strong will but happy demeanor.”

Also Arriving Friday from Eric Solomon Selections

From Spain:

Our favorite value in Priorat! The “Black Slate” line is craft in partnership with Eric Solomon Selections to bring you great Spanish values from some of the top names in the region.

Conreria d’Scala Dei Black Slate Escaladei, Priorat DOCa 2019 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Eric Solomon Selections note
“Black Slate Escaladei, a blend of Garnatxa with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and/or Carinyena sourced from the foothills of the Montsant mountains. It stands out among its Black Slate siblings as the most elegant of the lineup, inclined more towards red fruit than black, with a high-toned minerality and spiciness. It is selected from fruit aged in foudre and French oak demi-muids.”

This is the lowest listed price on the West Coast!

Bodegas Mas Alta Black Slate La Vilella Alta, Priorat DOCa 2019 750ML ($29.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Eric Solomon Selections note
“Eric Solomon, Bixente Oçafrain, and Philippe Cambie collaborate to create Black Slate La Vilella Alta by selecting Garnacha and Carinyena grown on both licorella and clay-limestone soils. A blend of old and young-vine fruit and small additions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, La Vilella Alta is a dense and intensively flavored wine fermented in tank and aged in French oak barrels, of which 30% are new.”

Bodegas Rafael Palacios ‘As Sortes Val do Bibei’ Godello, Valdeorras 2019 750ML ($89.95) $79 pre-arrival special
Decanter 98 points
“Sampled from a vat, this is one of the best As Sortes I have ever tasted, comparable to the iconic 2011. It’s a prodigy of subtleness and elegance. Everything is firmly delicate in this wine. Restrained aromas open up parsimoniously, with a steely structure like a great Burgundy, but with flinty acidity almost like Grosses Gewächs from Rheingau. Despite the fact that the sample was not yet bottled, the wine had no oak influence, just the indication that it had been aged, as top Godello must. Rafael Palacios is refining his work year after year, reaching the magic of the greatest wines. A top wine, and one to keep.”

From France:

La Colline aux Fossiles Chardonnay, Vin de France 2019 750ml ($19.95) $16 pre-arrival special
Jeb Dunnuck 94 points
“All Chardonnay brought up in used demi-muids, the 2019 La Colline Aux Fossiles sports a medium gold hue to go with terrific stone fruits, caramelized citrus, white flowers, and honeysuckle-like aroma and flavors as well as a beautiful sense of minerality that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured, with a layered mouthfeel and a great finish, it’s another knockout Chardonnay from the team of Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage.”

Domaine des Bosquets Gigondas Le Lieu Dit, Rhône 2019 750ML ($99.95) $88 pre-arrival special
Jeb Dunnuck 100 points
“The 2019 Gigondas Le Lieu-Dit is as good as it gets – hats off to the young Julien Brechet for one of the finest Gigondas ever made. Coming from a cooler, sandy terroir next to this estate and all Grenache, it was 70% destemmed and spent 18 months in used demi-muids before being moved to concrete tanks prior to bottling. A Grand Cru Red Burgundy-like array of wild strawberries, framboise, flowers, sappy green herbs, and spice all emerge on the nose. This is followed by a seamless, full-bodied, incredibly pure Gigondas that’s more about finesse and elegance than sheer power. I love it today, yet it has the balance, as well as structure, to benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for two decades if stored properly.”
Joe Czerwinski-Wine Advocate 95-97 points “Bold raspberry and black cherry aromas are laced with Campari-like spice on the nose of the stunning 2019 Gigondas Le Lieu Dit, which comes from a sandy, southwest-facing parcel that is consistently among the last plots on the estate to be harvested. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, this is a rich, tannic (but ripe) example of Grenache that should be capable of aging well for close to two decades.”
Wine Spectator 95 points “Delicious crushed raspberry and blackberry coulis flavors weave together, giving this version an equally enticing textural edge, while mouthwatering red licorice and rooibos tea notes stitch up the edges. Subtle mineral note infuses the finish, giving this a subtle grounding as the fruit sails through. Drink now through 2035. 540 cases made, 50 cases imported. — JM”

La Fortuna

The star of their lineup is undoubtedly their Brunello Riserva—a towering wine that is as majestic and complex as they come in Tuscany.

La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2013 750ml ($119.95) $88 special, 17 bottles in stock now
Wine Spectator 95 points
“Fluid and fruity, supported by a matrix of dense tannins, this features a fine texture and structure, offsetting the saturated flavors of cherry, red berry, leather, iron and tar. Stays focused while cruising to a lingering finish. Really youthful, intense and long. Best from 2022 through 2045. 330 cases made, 200 cases imported.”
James Suckling 95 points “Very attractive and intense aromas of ripe black cherries and plums, leading to a palate that has a quite firm tannin core and finishes with a convincing serving of rich, ripe darker plums and berries. Drink or hold.”

Case-6 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG, Tuscany 2015 750ml ($719.95) $564 special (that’s only $94/bottle!)
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95+ points
“The La Fortuna 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens to a moment of sweetness, a tiny interval that is quickly followed by spice, balsam herb and dried cherry. That sweetness disappears after the second sip or two, and the savory components of the wine—the spice, the smoke and the earthy notes—begin to take over. This wine spreads over the palate with slow and steady consistency. This is a 7,000-bottle release made from a selection of fruit from the estate’s 18 hectares of vines.”

Mighty Molitor’s Power Rieslings

There may be no more ambitious winemaker in the world than Markus Molitor (and no more ambitious German Riesling stockist than Vinopolis). Molitor’s determination and drive to make the best possible wines has made him a towering figure in the Mosel, with an impressive, modern winery and holdings in almost every important vineyard in the region (much like our humble shop). This drive means there are myriad bottlings—Molitor believes that every single sub-parcel and selective pick should be vinified to its utmost potential.

Most winemakers would pick a vineyard once or twice and vinify the lots together—it’s easier and the wines are good. Molitor, though, asks what each parcel and pick would be like on its own—treated as if it were a wine of distinction rather than a blending component. This is a lot of extra work and requires time and space that most winemakers would rather not spend, but the result is a dizzying number of bottlings that all strive toward perfection.

The critical praise backs this up— Markus Molitor’s wines are some of the most celebrated in the world. We have a dazzling selection of over 100 wines from Markus Molitor, and are eager to share them with you. Whether white capsule (dry), green capsule (off-dry), or gold capsule (fruity to nobly sweet), you can’t really go wrong with any of the numerous bottlings. So pick your favorite style and discover for yourself why we insist on carrying so many of these brilliant wines!

Highlights In Stock Now from Markus Molitor:

Dry:

Markus Molitor Alte Reben Riesling Trocken White Capsule, Mosel 2018 750ml ($34.95) $29 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 92 points
“The 2018 Riesling Alte Reben is perfectly ripe and pure on the intense yet elegant and refined, crystalline nose. Round and juicy on the palate, this is a rich and creamy-textured, finely tannic and phenolic Riesling with grip, but this old-vines Riesling cannot disguise its 2018 origin. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
Stuart Pigott-Jamessuckling 92 points “The lovely sliced-pear, white-peach and blood-orange nose eases you into this well-proportioned dry Mosel. The crisp acidity nicely balances the generous body and the touch of tannins. Good length and some nice herbal notes and complexity at the finish. Drink or hold.”

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese Trocken White Capsule, Mosel 2018 750ml ($44.95) $36 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 93+ points
“The 2018 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (White Capsule) offers a clear, fresh, bright and aromatic bouquet of white mandarins and mirabelles intertwined with the pure and refreshing tone of crushed stones and herbs. This bouquet gets you into the wine immediately. Round and intense on the succulent palate, this is a medium-bodied, elegant and very charming Sonnenuhr Spätlese with rather mild acidity but a serious terroir expression on the finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”

Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese ** Kranklay Trocken White Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ml ($69.95) $59 special, 32 bottles in stock now
Case-6 Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese ** Kranklay Trocken White Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ml ($359.95) $336 special (that’s only $56/bottle!)
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96+ points
“Bottled with moderate 11% alcohol, the 2017 Riesling Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** (White Capsule) is crystalline and super precise on the clear and flinty nose that exhibits crunchy, iron-rich stone and lime zest aromas. It is lean and fresh but dense and intense on the palate, with ripe, round and concentrated Riesling fruit, some sweetness and refined acidity. This is an elegant, highly finessed and stimulating Würzgarten with a lingering, salty-piquant finish. This wine pairs its moderate alcohol level with great complexity and mineral tension. It’s a fabulous yet still very young Würzgarten of extraordinary class and style. Tasted in March and April 2019.”
Note from Mosel Fine Wines “The 2017er Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes from the Estate’s parcel in the prime Kranklay sector.”

Off-Dry:

Markus Molitor Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Green Capsule, Mosel 2018 750ml ($34.95) $28 special, 33 bottles in stock now
David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points
“The nose of strawberry laced with basil, mint and cress presages an infectiously juicy, soothingly cooling and invigoratingly incisive palate impression. Low alcohol guarantees levity, yet as with other “green chip” Kabinetts in this collection, sweetness is very subtly supportive. The multifaceted, impressively sustained finish in fact flirts with outright weightlessness, the herbal essences joined by floral perfume for a strikingly inhalative impression yet without neglecting sheer refreshment.”
Stuart Pigott-Jamessuckling 93 points “Pungent, herbal character with plenty of licorice and some lemon zest. Then, a juicy and lively palate. This Kabinett has the balance those wines had back in the 1970s. Very clean finish with a ton of herbal notes. Drink or hold.”

Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese *** Feinherb Green Capsule, Mosel 2016 750ml ($99.95) $79 special, 20 bottles in stock now
Wine Advocate 98 points
“The 2016 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese *** (Green Capsule) is deep and complex on the nose, though discreet in its fruit expression straight from the bottle. However, the fruit is beautifully flinty, fresh and really fine. Lush and round on the palate, this is a full-bodied, ripe and intense yet well-balanced and elegant Himmelreich whose sweetness of roughly 30 grams per liter is still prominent at this young age. However, the wine is intense, long, firmly structured, very mineral and provided with serious tannins and a lot of stones. I am tasting it far too early (and straight after the three-starred Rosenberg Auslese), but it’s a highly promising Riesling from a great vintage for the Mosel. Bottled in September 2017; tasted March 2018.”
Stuart Pigott-Jamessuckling 96 points “A remarkable 2016 Mosel riesling that’s just off-dry. Stunning apricots and fresh herbs in the nose. Dense, succulent and yet elegant. The finish is a cascade of herbal notes, ripe fruit and floral honey. A very long and clean finish with a lot of power. Drink or hold.”

Fruity/Sweet:

Markus Molitor Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Gold Capsule, Mosel 2018 750ml ($34.95) $27 special, 26 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2018 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett (Golden Capsule) is clear, very fine and discreet on the precise and detailed nose. Dense and compact on the palate, with a tight mineral structure, this is a light and filigreed yet quite substantial Kabinett with a long and intense as well as piquant and salty finish. Crystalline and with intense fruit and very good length. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.”
David Schildknecht-Vinous 93 points “The greenhouse-like aromatic amalgam of flowers and foliage by now so familiar from Molitor 2018s is here surprisingly weighted on the side of greenery. Accompanying that, though, is a site-typical alliance of apple and vanilla that then lusciously informs a creamily textured palate, where perfume of honeysuckle and heliotrope also emerges prominently in glossy, liquefied form. And as if this conjunction of elements were not alluring enough, fresh juiciness of apple and pear as well as grapefruit and lime arrive on the scene to generate animation and guarantee refreshment. The finish is a real tour de force of flowers and fruit strikingly transparent to stony underpinnings. This wine deliciously reveals how Wehlener Sonnenuhr – justly renowned though it already is – particularly excelled in 2018.”

Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Auslese *** Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 375ml ($69.95) $59 special, 20 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 98 points
“Molitor’s 2017 Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a deep, pure, precise, smoky, highly concentrated yet refined and coolish nose of stewed stone fruits, candied lemons and grapefruits that intermingle with crushed stone and some leathery aromas. Lush and round on the generous but precise and highly finessed palate, this is an almost weightless Auslese with a honey-sweet yet piquant and salty finish. This is another laser-sharp but also sensual highlight of the vintage, not only at Markus Molitor. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese *Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 750ml ($499.95) $399 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese * Gold Capsule, Mosel 2017 375ML ($249.95) $199 special, 19 half-bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 100 points
“The 2017 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Beerenauslese * (Golden Capsule) is intense, fine and flinty on the highly precise nose with crunchy slate and grapefruit notes. Dense and concentrated on the palate, it has sweet but elegant and highly refined fruit intertwined with salty-finessed slate salinity and delicate acidity. This is a beautifully balanced BA from Molitor’s most important grand cru vineyard. Many readers might prefer its sweet and charming richness to the delicate finesse and crystallinity of the Würzgarten BA, which will be ready to drink sooner. But this Zeltinger Sonnenuhr in turn will gain even more finesse and drinkability over the years. Tasted at the domain in April 2019.”

Harlan Estate

This nearly 40-year old “First Growth” of Napa winegrowing estate is a highly esteemed for its Bordeaux-style red. Their 2017 represents one of the finest wines of the vintage in Napa.

“Yields are down over 40%, so there’s not much to go around, but it’s certainly another fine vintage for this landmark estate that will keep for 30 years or more.” –Jeb Dunnuck

““There was a clear dividing line between what we could use and what we couldn’t,” Director Don Weaver commented about Harlan Estate’s 2017 harvest. “The way the community came together was the defining moment for us. In terms of selection, we erred on the highest quality side. The good news is that we had a lot to choose from!” Indeed, Harlan Estate’s no-compromise stance has held them in good stead in 2017. Qualitatively, assuming this barrel sample is an accurate reflection of the final wine (and I have no reason to believe it isn’t), these guys didn’t miss a beat.” –Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate

In Stock Now:

Harlan Estate, Napa Valley 2017 750ML ($1,499.95) $1,199 special, 3 bottles in stock now
Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate 97+ points
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Harlan Estate needs a little coaxing to reveal captivating iron ore, red currant jelly, cloves and crushed rocks scents with a core of warm cassis, Black Forest cake and boysenberries plus a waft of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture with a lively backbone and loads of earthy layers, long and mineral laced. This should be one of the longer-lived wines coming out of the 2017 vintage.”
Jeb Dunnuck 97 points “The Grand Vin is the 2017 Harlan Estate, and this beauty just about jumps from the glass with its pure cassis and blackcurrant fruits as well as notes of tobacco, graphite, crushed stone, and spice. With a full-bodied, expansive mouthfeel, building, velvety tannins, and a layered, seamless style that offers way more pleasure than just about every other wine in the vintage, bottles can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years.”

Collector’s Corner:

Henri Gouges

Henri Gouges is one of the great names in Burgundy—a legendary domaine with wines that age beautifully and remains one of the best values in top-end Burgundy. Henri Gouges, who founded the venerable estate, was one of the first in Burgundy to estate bottle—at the time the winery was founded most just sold grapes or wine to negociants. He also was instrumental in creating the AOC system in Burgundy and sorting out the vineyard classification system. The estate is based in Nuits, with holdings in most of the major crus and an incredible standard of quality across the board. The current generation, Christian and Pierre (grandsons of Henri) are making some of the finest wines in the estate’s history.

In Stock Now:

Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits-Saint-Georges, Côte de Nuits 2016 750ML ($99.95) $69 special, 14 bottles in stock now
John Gilman 91 points
“The 2016 Nuits AC had just been racked the day before my visit and had its SO2 adjusted a touch as well, and yet the wine was in good form and easy to taste! The bouquet is deep and quite sappy this year (perhaps from the addition of some Chaignots?), jumping from the glass in a lovely mix of black cherries, sweet dark berries, woodsmoke, venison, dark soil tones and raw cocoa. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with fine focus and grip, ripe, seamless tannins and a long, vibrant and tangy finish. Fine, fine AC. 2024-2060+.”

Burgundy’s Nuits-Saint-Georges does not technically have a Grand Cru vineyard to its name, and this fact is a gift to us, and to you. Why? Because the commune’s most revered climat, Les Saint Georges, surely could be (and may be in the not-too-distant future). But without the official recognition, the wines still fly somewhat under the radar, selling for half of what they would (and will) if it were to receive its deserved promotion.

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Saint-Georges, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($249.95) $219 special, 8 bottles in stock now
Decanter 95 points
“There will be less Les St-Georges in 2018, as 20% of the vineyard has been replanted – if you’re a fan of this wine, now is the time to stock up. It’s appealingly aromatic and not as dense and brooding as this wine can be, but it’s a stylish, spicy, savoury premier cru red with good focus and a backdrop of blood and iron.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 93+ points “The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges is showing well, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoky berry fruit, licorice, candied peel, nori and rich soil tones, having already almost entirely integrated its framing of new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and nicely layered at the core, with good concentration, fine-grained but firm tannins and a precise, stony finish.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 92-94 points “The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru has a refined, harmonious bouquet of blackberry and bilberry aromas penetrated by a slight flintiness. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and beautifully integrated oak. Seamless in texture, leading to a poised, pure finish. This is easily the best of Gouges’s 2017s. Superb.”
Burghound – Outstanding 91-94 points “There is just enough wood to merit mentioning framing the aromas of plum liqueur, black raspberry, warm earth and a touch of the sauvage. There is excellent intensity to the overtly powerful and more mineral-driven medium weight flavors that culminate in a beautifully long and complex if markedly austere finish. This is even a bit firmer than the Vaucrains and as collectors of the Gouges wines know well, this will not make for especially accessible early drinking.”

Domaine Henri Gouges Les Pruliers, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru 2017 750ML ($149.95) $99 special, 22 bottles in stock now
Decanter 93 points
“The age of the vines is quite diverse in this 1.8ha block, ranging from 20 to 80 years. It’s a comparatively forward red, especially for a Nuits from the south side of the village. Notes of summer berries and tobacco pouch mingle appealingly on the nose and palate with supporting acidity and scented oak, 20% new.”
William Kelley-Wine Advocate 92 points “The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers wafts from the glass with an appealing bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, spiced plums, dried flowers and earthy forest floor. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with a ripe core of fruit, tangy acids and a firm, stony finish. It’s a suave, nicely integrated rendition of a climat that can sometimes be forbiddingly structural in its youth.”
Burghound 90-93 points “Outstanding. This too is noticeably reduced and aromatically unreadable today. Otherwise there is more volume and mid-palate density to the bigger and mostly muscular flavors that possess a less refined mouthfeel on the powerful, driving and more obviously structured finale. This is really quite good though at least some patience will be required.”
Neal Martin-Vinous 90-92 points “The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru offers intense black cherry, boysenberry and blueberry on the ripe, candied, generous nose, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit laced with blood orange and spices. Quite dense and grippy, this is another Gouges 2017 that will require several years in bottle.”

Arriving Early September

Vietti’s 2018 Crus

“This set of new releases comes with three big surprises. There are three new wines in their inaugural release: the single-vineyard Barolo Cerequio (with fruit from La Morra), the Barolo Monvigliero from Verduno and the Barbaresco Masseria, now entirely made with fruit from Roncaglie. The Monvigliero is a wine of special interest as it is made with 60% whole cluster fruit in collaboration with colleagues over at Borgogna…” –Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

“I was not at all surprised to see such a tremendous showing from Vietti because I had already tasted the 2018s from cask two years ago, pre-pandemic. The 2018 Barolos are absolutely beautiful. There is not much more to say than that…” — Antonio Galloni, February 2022

Arriving in Early September:

Vietti Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria, Barbaresco DOCG 2018 750ML ($134.95) $119 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95 points
“The 2018 Barbaresco Masseria Roncaglie is a captivating, layered wine full of character. Effusive aromatics make a strong opening impression. Rose petal, lavender, sage, blood orange and red berry fruit all run through this vibrant, focused Barbaresco. The 2018 is charming and nuanced from start to finish. This is the first vintage from a parcel that previously belonged to Socré. It’s an impressive debut, to say the least. All this nervy Barbaresco needs is time.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 94 points “This wine shows its MGA name ‘Roncaglie’ on the front label for the first time. That’s because Vietti recently acquired additional land in this cru site. The total holdings now span two hectares of vines. The 2018 Barbaresco Roncaglie Masseria is made as if it were a Barolo (instead of a Barbaresco) and is released one year after its peers. It shows tart fruit and dried cranberry with some mild spice and tarry smoke from two years in large oak casks. Exactly 5,026 bottles were made.”

Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($219.95) $199 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points
“With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti’s secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. A production of 4,493 bottles, the wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb.”
Antonio Galloni 94 points “The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a deep, layered wine that is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the Brunate is quite primary and backward, but all the ingredients are there. Sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and spice build with a bit of coaxing.”

Vietti Cerequio, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special, only 9 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 97 points
“The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit give the Cerequio its effusive personality. Nuanced and deep, with tremendous complexity and tons of character, the Cerequio is dazzling. This is everything a great Barolo from Cerequio should be. In other words: textbook. More over, it’s one of the best wines of this very uneven vintage.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 96 points “Here’s an exciting new submission from Vietti. The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations.”

Vietti Monvigliero, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($399.95) $319 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 96 points
“The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero, another new wine in this range, is dazzling. That’s not much of a surprise, as the 2018 has always been gorgeous from barrel. A touch of whole clusters adds aromatic nuance and lift to this super-classic, sculpted Barolo. The Monvigliero impresses with its purity, delineation and class. Superb.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “Here’s a very special treat from Verduno and one of the most exciting new releases we will see from Italy this year. In its inaugural release, the Vietti 2018 Barolo Monvigliero is made with 60% whole cluster fruit, following in time-honored local tradition. The soils of Monvigliero are loose and light in color, producing tight but lean-bodied wines. The use of whole clusters gives the wine more texture, intensity and tannins. With wild berry, rose, dried mint and white licorice and very fine and smooth tannins, this wine is part of a precious 3,207-bottle production.”

Vietti Ravera, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($219.95) $199 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
Antonio Galloni 95+ points
“The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.”
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 95 points “Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made.”

Vietti Rocche di Castiglione, Barolo DOCG 2018 750ML ($249.95) $219 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Monica Larner-Wine Advocate 97+ points
“This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine’s texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.”
Antonio Galloni 96 points “The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind.”

New Wine Spectator Insider Reviews

For Produttori del Barbaresco’s 2017s

Produttori del Barbaresco is revered for producing classically-styled Barbaresco and Riservas of uncompromising quality and transparency. It’s a miracle that these wines are still affordable and available, especially when compared to the skyrocketing prices of Barolo.

You’d be hard-pressed to find such consistent quality and complexity out of such an extensive range of single-vineyard Nebbiolos anywhere else. 2017 is being compared to the legendary 2015 harvest, with a warm and dry growing season against cool nights and timely rains making for ripe but not overwrought wines. This was on account of the season’s early warmth, which contributed to smaller leaves during the vegetative growth period according to Gaia Gaja of the eponymous cult label. The smaller leaves meant for slower sugar accumulation, resulting in wines that were able to maintain balance.
