Flash Sale: Casanova di Neri and Biondi Santi

Casanova di Neri Cerretalto, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 750ML ($379.95)
Was $319, Now $296, 12 bottles available
James Suckling 100 points
“This is very tannic and powerful with loads of currants, spices and hints of wood. So much stone and mineral character to this. Violets, too. Full-bodied, tight and structured. Massively dense yet agile and bright. It goes on for minutes. Needs at least three or four years to soften. Try in 2020.”
Wine Advocate 99+ points “This is a towering achievement. It is delightful on every level. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto is an expressive, exuberant and stunning wine that opens to a dark ruby color and rich consistency. The bouquet is never-ending with immediate intensity that is followed closely by finely-tuned aromas of black cherry, spice, grilled herb, clove, tobacco, wet earth and white truffle. A gorgeous display of elegant mineral tones rises from the bouquet with time. Later, those aromas turn to cola, licorice and tar. This wine showed an impressive evolution over the 24 hours I tasted it and delivered solid improvements each time. The mouthfeel is silky and smooth, and there’s enough power here to move the wine over the palate in seamless fashion. This is a bottle for the back of your cellar.”

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Riserva, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2006 750ML ($699.95)
Was $369, Now $319, 24 bottles available
Wine Spectator 97 points
“A mix of sweet cherry, raspberry, floral, tobacco, tea and balsamic flavors mingle in this complex and layered red. The acidity and tannins are present and well-integrated as this remains elegant and harmonious on the lingering finish. There’s a racy aspect, with a tobacco and mineral aftertaste. Best from 2016 through 2035.”
Wine Advocate 95 points “The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva comes across as a bit reticent. It reveals lovely detail and nuance, but without the firmness of many other young vintages. Today the 2006 is quite accessible. I will be surprised if it doesn’t start shutting down at some point. Regardless, the 2006 appears to be built more on finesse rather than power. Freshly cut flowers, hard candy and licorice are layered into the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2046.”

Trending Estate: Molitor

We just introduced the Molitor estate in early July, and already we’re running out! Below is a quick list of six of our top sellers, available here now and arriving in August or late 2016. Don’t miss out on these high scoring German Rieslings.
Trending Molitor Rieslings Available Here Now
Weingut Markus Molitor Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** Goldkapsel 2013 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 special, 15 bottles available
Wine Advocate 96 points
“Even purer and perhaps more sophisticated than the Bockstein is the sweet 2013 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** with its cool, slate purity and springlike citrus and blossom aromas, which are delivered as lime chutney on the nose. This again is a kind of pure Armani perfume and the cool character of a true gentleman who turns out to be a notorious rake, elegant and balanced as it is. The texture is nobly concentrated and juicy, and there is no single botrytis berry in this stunning wine. Drink it now, but drink it slowly, or store it for a decade or two.”

Weingut Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese *** Goldkapsel 2013 750ML ($99.95)
$79 special, 7 bottles available
Wine Advocate 98+ points
“More tropical fruit aromas such as juicy pineapples and macerated ginger dominate the nose of the richer yet still pure and subtle 2013 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese ***. Quite sweet, intense and densely textured on the palate, this wine neither lacks elegance nor piquancy nor balance. It is just more generous, sweeter and lush than the Würzgarten ***-Auslese, but at the same time it is absolutely delicate and full of finesse.”

Trending Molitor Rieslings Arriving in August 2016Weingut Markus Molitor Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese ** Goldkapsel 2013 750ML ($59.95) $41.90 pre-arrival special, ETA August 2016
Wine Advocate 97 points
“The sweet 2013 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese ** is somewhat remote in its cool and aristocratic smokiness, which delivers a fragrant perfume of lemons, limes and crushed stones to the nose. Quite juicy, yet subtle and elegant on the palate, this is a highly concentrated, minerally piquant and persistently salty Auslese with a stunning delicacy in the aftertaste. The wine is very firm and piquant, but its concentration and vibrancy will take it through decades.”

Weingut Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese ** White Capsule (Dry) 2013 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special, ETA August 2016
Wine Advocate 96 points
“Compared to the dry Sonnenuhr Spätlese, the dry 2013 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** is significantly more refined and detailed in its subtle, slightly fumy mineral flavors on the nose, but as clear and healthy in its citrus aromatic, which is completed by delicate pineapple flavors. The wine is absolutely elegant and delicate on the palate and the concentration has nothing to do with power or richness here, but with purity, finesse, complexity and length. The mineral or slate taste is remarkably fine and densely woven which gives this Auslese a great elegance and the finish of a world-class Riesling. The finish is not only very persistent but also aromatic, piquant and salty plus full of needles. This is a great wine made for decades and there is perhaps just one competitor in the Mosel and that’s Markus’ own 2013 Auslese ***. “

Daniel:
Le Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone Rose 2015 750ML ($21.95) $18 special, 36+ bottles available
From the same rocky soil and abundant sunshine that makes great Châteauneuf du Pape comes this lovely rosé. Part Mourvèdre, part Counoise, all biodynamically farmed, Le Caillou Côtes-du-Rhône 2015 carries the esprit of its terroir and the magical touch of its grower-winemakers. Le Clos du Caillou produces some of the finest Châteauneuf, and this is the rosé they sip after long days spent in the summer heat. Now in its third generation, Le Clos du Caillou remains a family affair, which means much affection goes into every wine. Le Caillou is hand-harvested, and the grapes get sorted in the vineyard and winery before being directly pressed to make a thorough, thoughtful, and satiating rosé. Red fruits like raspberries dominate the bouquet, backed by spice and licorice. The 2015 vintage, regarded as excellent, gives the wine a richness and roundness to accompany food or to satisfy on its own. If you’re looking for a rosé, might as well choose one from a fine wine estate like Le Clos du Caillou.

Domaine du Dragon Cotes de Provence Grande Cuvee Rose, Provence 2015 750ML ($19.95)
$16 special, 36+ bottles available
A light and bright Provence rose with a tart, chalky flavor. The wine hails from a high-altitude estate far above the Cote d’Azur. The vineyards are steeply terraced in the chalky limestone soil. The strong, mountain winds keep the temperatures cool despite the warm sun and allow the grapes to reach optimal ripeness during a long growing season. The palate suggests lemon zest and fresh raspberries with hints of the savory scrubby herbs that grow wild in the region. It’s quite light in body without sacrificing flavor. The wine is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault and Rolle.
Tyler:

Chateau Henri Bonnaud Cotes de Provence Sainte-Victoire Terre Promise Rose 2014 750ML ($21.95) $16 special, 36+ bottles available
Alright, I’m going to need you to trust me with this one. While everyone else clamors for the brand-new, bottled-a-month-ago 2015 rosés, I’m of the belief that your best bet for dynamic summer winetimes is a pink which has quietly rested in bottle for over a year. Why? Bottle shock has subsided, SO2 has subsided, and the wine is tasting better than ever. Bonnaud’s “Terre Promise”, a 50/50 blend of Grenache and Syrah, displays perfect balance and verve. What I particularly like about it is the round, lingering texture it displays – aided by a year spent evolving in bottle. A long finish, fresh fruit, and soft edges make for a well-rounded wine. An august wine for August, indeed!

Raymond Usseglio

Now in its third generation of family winegrowers, Domaine Raymond Usseglio has earned a prestigious reputation in Châteauneuf du Pape. Founded in 1948, the Usseglio family now farms its 60 acres biodynamically, which ensures a healthy crop of grapes and a close relationship between grower and vine. This devoted attention in the vineyard carries through to the winery, as the quality of the wines testifies.Usseglio’s Cuvée Impériale represents the best of the domaine. Very old Grenache vines, planted in 1901-02, produce low yields of amazing natural concentration. The Impériale consists of 90% old-vine Grenache, with an assortment of indigenous Rhône varietals to round things out. Meanwhile, the Cuvée Girard offers a more approachable wine in the short term. It too is made of 90% Grenache, with Mourvèdre, Syrah, Cinsault, and Counoise blended in. Both wines speak strongly of their origins, and will taste delicious over the next decade and more. Drink the Girard now, and open the Impériale over the next few years. This is Châteauneuf to savor…

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Girard 2013 750ML ($49.95)
$33 special, 11 bottles available
Wine Advocate 90 points
“Similar in quality to the standard cuvee, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Girard has more spice and savory notes to go with plenty of dried cherry, lavender and violets. Nicely concentrated, medium-bodied and nicely textured, it’s an outstanding wine that will drink nicely through 2023.”
Josh Raynolds–Vinous 90 points “Vivid ruby-red. Aromas of smoke-accented red berries, lavender, licorice and garrigue enlivened by a peppery topnote. Chewy and focused on the palate, offering spicy red currant and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of licorice that sneaks in with air. A floral pastille quality emerges on the nicely persistent finish, which is given shape by youthful, dusty tannins.”

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Imperiale 2013 750ML ($79.95) $39.90 special, 36+ bottles available
Wine Advocate 93 points
“Given the difficulty with Grenache in 2013, the Grenache-dominated 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Imperiale (Vigne Centenaires) is a head-turner that offers terrific notes of plum, black cherries, mulberries, dried flowers and licorice. Brought up all in concrete tank, this medium to full-bodied, ripe, textured, yet structured Grenache will be better in a year or three, and drink well through 2025.”

New Prices on Brovia

Wines Re-Arrive August 5th

Brovia Sori del Drago Barbera d’Alba 2013 750ML ($31.95) Was $28, Now $24, re-arriving Friday, August 5th
Antonio Galloni 89 points
“Expressive floral notes meld into sweet plum and raspberry in Brovia’s 2013 Barbera d’Alba Sorì del Drago. Silky and open-knit, the mid-weight Sorì del Drago will drink well for another handful of years. Despite its deceptively medium-bodied feel, the Sorì del Drago packs quite a punch.”

Now it’s even lower!
Brovia Valmaggione Nebbiolo d’Alba 2012 750ML ($37.95) $33 special, re-arriving Friday, August 5th
“Sorry to double down with the superlatives, but for me, this is the most exciting wine the Brovia family bottles.  It is the cheapest, lowest abv%, highest elevation, most northerly, most north facing Nebbiolo bottling in the family’s lineup — and the most limited production wine they make.  Always a huge winner for me.  “Valmaggione” (the actual name of the vineyard is ValmaggioRe, but the printer misspelled the label during the first vintage and the Brovia family decided to stick with it as a joke) is a parcel in Vezza d’Alba that produces some very expensive and sought after wines by more modernist producers like Sandrone.  Super steep, sandy soils with great drainage that make for a wine with pronounced freshness and lift. No oak, no extended élevage. Pure, great wine.”–Importer Notes

Brovia ‘Brea Vigna Ca’ Mia’, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($89.95) Was $77, Now $69, re-arriving Friday, August 5th
Antonio Galloni 94 points
“Lavender, mint, sage, smoke, tobacco and plums are all laced together in the 2011 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca’Mia. As always, the Ca’Mia is a decidedly vertical Barolo built on a spine of persistent tannin, but in 2011 there is a little bit of added polish that serves to soften the contours. Tucked off the main road, Brea remains one of the least well-known vineyards in Serralunga. The 2011 is a great wine to start exploring some of the nuances of this site. A huge finish that brings together power and voluptuousness captures the pure radiance of the year.” AGBrovia Villero, Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($89.95) Was $77, Now $66, re-arriving Friday, August 5th
Antonio Galloni 93 points
“The 2011 Barolo Villero is one of the most structured wines in the range. Here the firm tannins and ample frame both suggest the 2011 will drink well for many years, once the tannins start softening. Orange peel, wild flowers, red stone fruits and spices flesh out on the creamy finish. It’s always interesting to taste the Villero next to the Rocche, as the two sites are pretty close to the other, yet the wines are remarkably different. Here the heat of the year is quite evident, while the Rocche benefits from greater ventilation and therefore a bit more freshness.” AG

Introducing Simone Scaletta and Cantina del Glicine

Piedmont Super Deals

Arriving Friday, August 5th

Simone Scaletta Dolcetto d’Alba 2014 750ML ($17.95)
$11.90 pre-arrival special
Winery note “[Translated] Edgy, explosive and with the indomitable temperament of the vineyard. The nose opens with fresh and fruity aromas of violets, blueberry and almond. It has a bittersweet aftertaste of fresh almonds complimented by balanced acidity and well-structured tannins.”
Importer note “Simone Scaletta stands tall amongst a generation of new winemakers in the Langhe. Without any family holdings in Barolo, he boldly ditched his day job in Turin and set out to build a stunning winery in the heart of Monforte d’Alba. For eight years, Simone lived out of a van as he constructed his dream cellar. Hard-driving and zealous, Simone approaches winemaking with an unmistakable joie de vivre. Today, the boundlessly energetic winemaker oversees five hectares of Barbera, Dolcetto, and Nebbiolo in Bussia and Bricco San Pietro. Simone Scaletta bottled his first vintage in 2003, and the sky appears to be the limit for this emerging Barolo house.”

Simone Scaletta Chirlet Barolo DOCG 2011 750ML ($39.95) $28 pre-arrival special
Winery note “It gives off fresh perfumes of red small fruits, undergrowth and withered rose which evolve into balsamic and spicy notes. The taste results rich and complex for the palate, because of the fine tannins and the marked acid vein, which give a touch of extreme elegance. It reflects totally the characteristics of Monforte territory with its balanced temperament.”

Massolino
Electric Barolo
Arriving Friday

Serralunga d’Alba would not be the same without the Massolino family. Besides the fact that Giovanni Massolino brought electricity to the town in 1896, he also established the storied wine estate that bears his family name. The classic Massolino Barolo dates back to 1911, and the wines are still grown and produced by the Massolino family, now in its fourth generation of winemakers. In all, Massolino owns 57 acres of vineyard, including four Barolo crus. With such a reputation to uphold, tradition still guides the way here: fermentation in cement tanks, ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. Yet modernity has its hand, too: Not at all rustic, the wines are smooth, clean, and extremely pleasurable. These are some of the finest Barolos around, unafraid of long cellar time. With or without electricity, Serralunga and the Langhe have the Massolinos to thank.

We are thrilled to offer a wide range of the classic Massolino wines, arriving Friday:
Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($31.95) $24 pre-arrival special
Case-12 Massolino Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2013 750ML ($359.95) $249 pre-arrival special (that’s only $20.75/bottle!)

Wine Spectator 92 points “A tightly coiled version, with a solid core of black cherry framed by licorice and spice accents. Though locked up for now, this shows the potential for a long evolution. Delivers fine ripeness and midpalate density. Best from 2019 through 2033.”
James Suckling 92 points “Lots of pretty, ripe yet subtle fruit in this wine with plum, dried strawberry and spice character. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Better in 2018.”

Wine Advocate 93 points
“The 2009 Barolo Margheria, however, moves us over to the Serralunga d’Alba township where power and structure are the name of the game. This wine shows big bones with firmly rooted tannins and a bold, fleshy quality of fruit. Black currant, chopped mint and licorice are woven tightly within the fabric of the wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028.”

Wine Enthusiast 95 points
“Structured and focused, this gorgeous wine offers enticing scents of pressed violet, woodland berry, baking spice, tilled soil and leather. The firm palate delivers ripe black cherry, licorice, mint, tobacco and ground clove alongside youthfully assertive but refined tannins. Give this time to fully develop—it should blossom into a beauty. Drink 2018–2026.”
Wine Spectator 93 points “A mix of ripe cherry, raspberry, plum, tobacco and tea aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this well-defined red. A stiff backbone of tannins and vivid acidity keeps this moving toward the lingering, earth-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2032”

Massolino Parussi, Barolo DOCG 2007 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Warm and inviting, featuring macerated cherry, leather, tobacco and spice flavors. The balance leans toward the tannic side, yet this shows an extra level of ripeness and integration, with excellent length. Best from 2015 through 2032.”
Stephen Tanzer–Vinous 93 points “Bright medium red. Compelling perfume of strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, flowers, minerals and wild herbs. Dense, sappy and concentrated; wonderfully silky Barolo but also much more vibrant than the 2008. The tannins are a bit youthfully aggressive but the wine’s lingering mineral and wild herb perfume suggests it will be a beauty with another four to six years in the cellar.”

Case-6 Massolino Parussi, Barolo DOCG 2009 750ML ($449.95) $359 pre-arrival special (that’s only $59.83/bottle!)
Wine Advocate 94 points
“The 2009 Barolo Parussi sees fruit sourced from the Castiglione Falletto township and consequently shows the most ethereal and refined characteristics of these three vineyard-designate wines. Rosehip, forest berry and even a touch of stone fruit or apricot emerge at first, followed by heavier aromas of tar and black licorice. The wine shows impressive elegance, finesse, silky tannins and fresh acidity. Those overall attributes, melded so perfectly together, are rare to find in the warmer 2009 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.”

Massolino Vigna Rionda Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2009 750ML ($149.95) $108 pre-arrival special
Luca Gardini 98 points, Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2009 Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva burst from the glass with enormous confidence and personality. Nothing is understated here or otherwise hidden from view. This Riserva immediately puts its best assets forward with dark fruit nuances that are woven tight with veins of exotic spice and crushed mineral. The wine also reveals lovely aged characteristics of licorice, dried tobacco and balsam herb. The 2009 vintage is slightly broader and flatter compared to 2007 and 2006.”
James Suckling 94 points “There’s cedar and sandalwood undertone to this Barolo with ripe fruit and milk chocolate as well. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a long, flavorful finish. A late release from a fine producer of Barolo showing energy and tension. Drink now.”

Massolino Barolo Vigna Rionda X Dieci Anni Riserva, Barolo DOCG 2004 750ML ($249.95) $199 pre-arrival special
VinopolNote: The Dieci is a special reserve bottling released by the winery after 10 additional years.
Wine Advocate 96 points “The 2004 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda reveals superb complexity and nuance in a never-ending display of aromas and flavors that saturate the palate. Tobacco, truffles, spices, licorice and dark fruit swirl around in the glass as the wine continues to gain volume and depth with air. The tannins are massive yet beautifully balanced and the stage seems set for the 2004 to develop into one of the finest Vigna Riondas crafted here. Constantly changing in the glass, the wine captures that characteristic Rionda elusiveness that invites a second taste and then a third. In sum, it is a Barolo that will provide endless fascination for many years to come. Incredibly, it tastes almost as youthful as it did from barrel a few years ago! Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.”

Saint Cosme

“Without a doubt, the leading estate in Gigondas is Louis Barruol’s Chateau Saint-Cosme. Located just outside the village, he releases an assortment of world class Gigondas, as well as a number of value priced, negotiate-styled Cotes du Rhone efforts that always deliver high-quality (these are normally released under his Saint-Cosme label and do not say Chateau Saint-Cosme).” Jeb Dunnuck in The Wine Advocate

Across an astounding 15 generations, the Barroul family has tended the vines of Saint Cosme, the oldest estate in all of Gigondas. Louis Barroul has been at the helm for just shy of twenty years, overseeing fifteen hectares of vines with an average vine age of sixty years. He expanded the family business to include several Rhone valley wines and expanded the wine cellar into the ancient Roman tunnels: he saw the value in their longevity and ability to maintain the ideal humidity and temperature for aging wine.

The Chateau is surrounded by 37 acres of old-vine vineyard land that line the foothills of the Dentelles-de-Montmirail Mountains. It is no surprise that the vines average an impressive 60 years in age, coming from an estate that was founded in 1490. The estate is in the middle of two geological faults, resulting in a wide variety of soil types. The microclimate is quite cool for the region; grapes are usually harvested later than other estates in the area.

These wines are powerful and rich with a striking elegance. The Le Poste vineyard surrounds the estate’s chapel and was replanted by Louis’ father Henri in 1963 is one of the estate’s original vineyards. It is composed of several parcels of Grenache and one of Clairette. The soil is limestone yellow mall with many fossils and makes the most feminine and elegant wine of the estate. Le Claux and the Hominis Fides vineyards were first recognized in 1902. Le Claux, planted in 1870, was scheduled to be ripped out in 1914 because the vines no longer produced large yields. The War and several deaths in the family prevented its destruction. Now Le Claux is celebrated for its old vines that produce tiny, concentrated yields. It produces the most Burgundian character, with finesse and complexity. The Hominis Fides vineyard is composed of the oldest vines in the estate. It is made of sandy limestone soil that the winemaker believes help contribute to the fine tannins in the Grenache. It is their “most deep and enigmatic wine.”

Fans of ripe and unctious Gigondas may take pause, but the 2013 and 2014 vintages are nothing to shy away from, and offer better value than recent point-grabbing years.  As Josh Raynolds notes, “rabid demand for the Next Big Thing virtually guarantees gentler mark-ups for vintages such as 2013 (and, I would wager, 2014) , which is great news for savvy, value-minded wine lovers more interested in drinking the wines than in bagging cellar trophies.”  In 2014, Louis Barroul applied stern selection reducing the supply of the top of the line selections (Le Claux, Le Poste, and Hominus Fides). And the intermediate selection (Valbelle) was not bottled. Rather, that wine went all into his village level Gigondas.

We’re pleased to offer an expansive range of new releases from this storied estate.

The wines are all listed below and arriving August 5th and August 12th:

Saint Cosme Wines Arriving August 5thSaint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2015 750ML ($19.95) $16 pre-arrival special
Winery note “The 2015 whites are structured with length yet also good freshness. The aromatic spectrum is characterized by ripeness, the wine is very open and reveals itself easily. Picpoul demonstrated its significance more than ever this year. Without it, we would have been totally unable to produce a balanced white. Also, the varietal has the ability to support the other grapes, without overshadowing them – it always takes a back seat to the expressive varieties Marsanne and Viognier. Basically, Picpoul is a real gentleman – it can play the bagpipes, but does not, as one famous French comedian once said. Pineapple, apricot, peach, violet, blackcurrant bud and licorice.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91-93 points “(sourced from Malleval): Inky ruby. Strongly perfumed aromas of blackberry, boysenberry and smoky minerals carry a subtle peppery overtone. Seamless, pliant and gently sweet, offering concentrated dark berry and cola flavors and a touch of star anise on the back half. Gains richness with air and finishes very long and smoky, displaying building tannins and a late suggestion of olive. There’s an intriguing umami character to this wine that should make it very flexible at the table.”

Josh Raynolds-Vinous 90-92 points “Brilliant ruby. Smoky cherry, boysenberry and potpourri scents show very good clarity and pick up a spicy quality with aeration. Intense red and blue fruit flavors are complicated by a floral pastille nuance. Finishes on a gently tannic note, delivering very good energy and spicy thrust. All of the Valbelle fruit was included in this bottling in 2014.”Saint Cosme Cote Rotie 2014 750ML ($69.95) $49 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “A firm, taut, minerally style, with lots of iron-edged grip striding from start to finish, while red currant and damson plum fruit push out from the core. White pepper and singed juniper details fill in the background. This will need some time to stretch out fully. Best from 2019 through 2030.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92-94 points “(made, as usual, from vineyards in the Côte Brune): Opaque ruby. Vibrant, sharply focused black and blue fruits on the nose, complicated by peppery spice and mineral notes. Lithe and precise, showing strong lift to the intense blueberry, violet pastille and spicecake flavors. Picks up a smoky quality with air and finishes sweet, seamless and very long, with sneaky tannins adding shape and grip.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Claux 2014 750ML ($99.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 94 points “Intense, with lots of grip along the edges, as rosemary, tobacco and charcoal notes coil around the core of steeped plum, blackberry and red currant fruit. Best from 2018 through 2024.”J.M.
Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The most mineral-driven in the lineup, the 2014 Gigondas le Claux is almost 100% Grenache, and was fermented with 100% stems and aged in Burgundy barrels. Freshly crushed rocks, black currants, forest floor and truffle notes all flow beautifully to a medium to full-bodied, layered, sexy and nicely concentrated Gigondas that has enough fruit to drink well on release, yet the structure, balance and depth to evolve for 10-15 years. It’s an undeniable success in the vintage.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92-94 points “Vivid ruby-red. Highly perfumed red fruit liqueur, potpourri and Asian spice scents show impressive clarity and vivacity. Sappy, tangy and precise, offering lively raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a touch of spicecake. Closes on a smoky mineral note, displaying superb focus, silky tannins and emphatic, floral-driven persistence.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Poste 2014 750ML ($99.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 95 points “This has a succulent edge despite the vintage profile, with lovely raspberry, plum and boysenberry coulis flavors stretching out, picking up dried star anise, lightly singed alder and perfumy black tea notes. The long, fine-grained structure and lovely minerality linger through the finish. Shows remarkable refinement for the vintage. Drink now through 2024.”
Jeb Dunnuck-Wine Advocate 92-94 points “The most pretty, elegant and finesse-driven of the single vineyard releases, the 2014 Gigondas le Poste offers more floral notes as well as ample cassis, violets and cracked pepper. From a terraced vineyard located just beside the estate, I love its tannin quality, as well as its purity of fruit, perfect balance and clean, lengthy finish. I always find slightly less concentration and density in this cuvee, yet more purity and finesse, and this holds true in 2014 as well.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 92-94 points “Bright ruby-red. Intense red berry preserve, incense and floral pastille scents are sharpened by suggestions of smoky minerals and white pepper. Sweet, penetrating and vibrant, offering concentrated raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a suave spicecake nuance. Shows excellent clarity and lift on the finish, which is firmed by silky tannins and a repeating mineral note.”

Saint Cosme Wines Arriving August 12thChateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Le Poste Blanc 2014 750ML ($49.95) $39 pre-arrival special
Jeb Dunnuck-Wine Advocate 90 points “Coming all from the second terrace of the le Poste vineyard in Gigondas (there’s no white wines allowed under the Gigondas AOC, so this is released as a Cotes du Rhone), the 2014 Cotes du Rhone Le Poste Blanc is 100% Clairette, from vines planted in 1963, that’s raised all in older barrels. It offers terrific notes of mulled pears, buttered citrus, lemon curd and a kiss of minerality as well as medium-bodied richness, lively acidity and outstanding length. It’s beautiful now, but this cuvee also ages gracefully and has a broad drink window.”

Chateau de Saint Cosme Gigondas Hominis Fides 2014 750ML ($89.95) $69 pre-arrival special
Wine Spectator 93 points “Well-built, with sage, savory and tobacco notes weaving around the core of blackberry and black currant, picking up charcoal and roasted alder accents. Best from 2017 through 2024.”
Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate 92-94+ points “What will mostly likely end up being the wine of the vintage is the 2014 Gigondas Hominis Fides. From a single vineyard located just down the hill from the estate, fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged all in Burgundy barrels, it offers sensational notes of crushed rock, graphite, dried rose petals and licorice in a medium to full-bodied, elegant, seamless style that hides considerable tannic grip. It’s a beautiful wine that will still be drinking nicely in 2034.”
Josh Raynolds-Vinous 91-93 points “Deep ruby. Powerful, smoke-accented aromas of dark berries and incense, complicated by suave floral pastille and woodsmoke nuances. Fleshy and deeply concentrated, showing impressive depth to the densely packed red and blue fruit flavors, which are lifted by juicy acidity. The smoky note repeats on a youthfully tannic finish that shows impressive energy, power and thrust.”

Piancornello Brunello
Arriving August 12th

“One of my favorite under the radar estates in Montalcino.” – Antonio Galloni-Vinous Media

Piancornello is a certified organic estate run by the Pieri family, which has owned the vineyard since 1950. It was not until 1991 that the family first bottled their own wine, choosing to sell grapes to local produces before that time. Their efforts towards sustainable land management and focus on traditional hand harvesting and minimalist cellar techniques were recognized in 2014 by Slow Food International. The estate is managed by Claudio Monaci, son of the owner, Silvana Pieri.

Piancornello Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2011 750ML ($49.95)
$39 pre-arrival special
James Suckling 93 points “This is a soft, delicate and succulent red with dried strawberry, walnut and light cream aromas and flavors. Full body, polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Subtle and gorgeous. Drink or hold.” (15-Feb-2016)
Antonio Galloni 92 points “The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the more successful wines of the vintage. Sage, lavender, iron, smoke and dark red cherry notes flesh out in a supple, inviting Brunello. A kick of Mediterranean warmth gives the 2011 its generous texture, with all of the elements very much in the right place. I would prefer to drink the 2011 over the next handful of years or so. This is a strong showing from Piancornello.”

Stephen Tanzer 91 points
“(90% nebbiolo and 10% barbera; aged for 18 months in new French oak):  Good medium red.  Perfumed aromas and flavors of plum, redcurrant, tobacco and spices.  Intense and vibrant, with lovely inner-mouth aromatic lift.  Very classy, delineated wine.” ST

Felsina Berardenga Rancia, Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2012 1.5L ($99.95) $89 special, 6 magnums available
Antonio Galloni 94+ points
“A ripe, powerful wine, the 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia offers a level of finesse that balances some of the more overt intensity of the year. Dark cherry, plum, spice, tobacco, menthol and licorice add shades of nuance as this beautifully delineated Rancia opens up in the glass. Because of its mid-weight structure, I expect the 2012 will give up its charms relatively early by Rancia standards, which means around age 15-20. The 2012 is not an obvious or explosive Rancia, rather is a wine built on compelling overall harmony.”
Tenuta Col d’Orcia Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2010 1.5L ($149.95)
$99 special, 16 magnums available
Wine Spectator 93 points
“This smells like beef bouillon, picking up pure cherry and plum fruit on the palate, along with savory elements. Lean, with well-integrated tannins and a long, meaty finish of tobacco and earth. Best from 2018 through 2030.”
Antonio Galloni 92 points “Col d’Orcia’s 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vendemmia is all finesse. Sweet floral and spiced notes open up in the glass, followed by veins of bright red stone fruits. Hints of orange peel and white pepper add an attractive, beguiling upper register of aromatics. The 2010 is still a bit raw and much less expressive than it was from barrel, but it is promising.”

La Gerla Riserva gli Angeli, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2007 1.5L ($219.95) $169 special, 11 magnums available

“Spicy oak aromas greet the nose, while concentrated flavors of cherry, currant and tobacco are buried underneath. Very vibrant, with refined tannins and a lingering finish of fruit, spice and mineral. Builds on the finish, with a long aftertaste. A combination of power and finesse. Best from 2015 through 2030.”WS
James Suckling 95 points “Intense aromas of dried fruits and Christmas pudding. Turns to plums and raspberries. Full and concentrated with an intense palate of dried fruits and vanilla. Powerful and concentrated style here.”

Gulfi Nerosanlore Sicilia IGT, Sicily 2010 1.5L ($119.95) $99 special, 6 magnums available
Ian D’Agata–Vinous 95 points
“Fully saturated ruby. Pure, very deep aromas of black cherry, red plum, medicinal herbs and minerals. Rich, dense and suave, with complex flavors of saline red berries and dark plum complicated by repeating botanical herb and balsamic nuances. Finishes seamless an long. A wine of noteworthy purity, with an excellent balance of sweetness, acidity and tannins. This is Gulfi’s closest vineyard to the sea and almost always gives the estate’s most elegant, refined wine.”

Produttori del Barbaresco Rabaja, Barbaresco Riserva DOCG 2008 1.5L ($219.95)
$199 special, 13 magnums available
Wine Advocate 96+ points
“The 2008 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja is utterly magnificent in this vintage. Usually a powerhouse, the 2008 is incredibly refined to the point it seems to literally hover on the palate. It is a wine of exquisite grace and beauty. All the elements are in place. I could describe the aromas and flavors, but that would be doing this majestic Barbaresco a huge disservice. Ultimately, the 2008 Rabaja, is all about textural finesse and pure elegance. This is another breathtaking wine from the Produttori. A king among kings. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2048.” WA

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa ‘Falletto’, Barolo DOCG 2008 1.5L ($419.95) $319 special, 7 magnums available
Wine Spectator 96 points
“Warm and chewy, this red exhibits cedar, sandalwood, tobacco and leather accents enhancing the core of cherry and raspberry. As this plays out on the palate, the wine turns more supple and vibrant, building to the long, expansive finish. Best from 2016 through 2035.”WSVietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2006 1.5L ($399.95) $319 special, 1 magnum available
Vietti Brunate, Barolo DOCG 2006 3L ($829.95)
$699 special, 1 jeroboam available
Wine Enthusiast 97 points
“Bravo! The Brunate cru has awarded Vietti with a stellar product: a wine that is unusually dark and plush with impressive intensity and crafted aromas of black fruit, spice, earth, licorice, balsam and gianduia chocolate-hazelnut spread. The soft, velvety texture is seductively delicious and the wine will age many long, glorious years.” WE
Wine Advocate & Stephen Tanzer 95 points “Good medium red. Perfumed aromas of camphor, brown spices and menthol. Silky-sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with lovely class and a light touch for a wine with such a plush texture-no doubt due to a mineral element that reminded me of Musigny. Very intensely flavored, suave Brunate with an impressive rising finish. A superb showing: this has the structure for a slow evolution in bottle but the complexity to give it considerable early appeal.”ST
