Smart & Stunning Buys:

Introducing the Mijita Wine Co.

Oregon is one of the few states where the major metropolitan area sits next door to an internationally notable winemaking region, and where buying direct from the winemakers is the happy norm rather than the exception. We capitalize on this as much as possible, heavily supporting the folks at Cameron, Goodfellow, Hundred Suns, Sequitur, Crowley, and more, without a middleman in between. These aren’t just brands or sales data to us, these are people and places we love and respect.

It’s equally thrilling to watch the launch of future shining stars, especially by folks we deeply admire such as Lizzy Esqueda. Esqueda has hustled for years in the wine industry doing the grueling yet rewarding work in service, sales, and making. Were we to tick off all of her overlapping industry cred, you’d wonder how she fits sleeping and eating into her day between her full time studies, harvests here and abroad, helming the winemaking at several WV wineries, working in the fine dining scene, and enthusiastically sharing her passion for international and domestic wines as a Vinopolis staff member. Between the ever-increasing bullet points on her resume, Esqueda has traveled to numerous winemaking regions and wineries (ask her about Lopez de Heredia), exploring styles and techniques the world over. To describe the growth of her dream into fruition as studious and passionate seems an understatement, a truth reflected in the glowing and international anticipatory press she’s earned just before the Mijita Wine Co.’s grand debut.

Sampling her wines last week was an uplifting joy. Of course they are tasty and fun, but not only so. These wines are good, not just in a qualitative sense, but in a transcendental sense as well. They draw a direct line between the deep knowledge and love she has for the vines, the people that tend them, the land that supports them, and the producers she admires. All this while showcasing her own utterly distinctive and delicious spin on the chic styles of skin-contact Pinot Gris and Beaujolais-through-the-lens-of-Burgundy-inspired Gamay Noir.

How can wine or a woman do such heavy lifting? Pop a cork and ponder. We can offer no other answer than to admire.

In Stock Now from Mijita Wine Co.:

Mijita Wine Co. Zenith Vineyard Skin-Contact Pinot Gris, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ml $26 special, 36 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: The dark side of skin-contact Pinot Gris, in terms of color at least. This is a beautiful rosy-amber in the glass, evoking flavors of semi-dried rose petals, freshly sliced melons, and lemon zest wrapped around a savory core.
“Lizzy Esqueda’s first wine for her Mijita label is a skin-contact Pinot Gris aged in neutral oak and old acacia barrels. It is absolutely brilliant juice: I wish Pinot Gris lovers everywhere could taste it.” –Michael Alberty, Decanter Magazine

Mijita Wine Co. Abbey Road Farm Vineyard Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $28 special, 36 bottles in stock now
VinopolNote: A shout out to the trending style of Gamay produced by such illustrious and fan-favorite Beaujolais as Anne-Sophie Dubois and Daniel Bouland, who in turn take their inspiration from Burgundy. This is no saccharine fruit-bomb, but a serious and seriously drinkable Gamay that will astound. This, folks, is the wine we’ve been waiting for. It’s exciting, bold, and fresh, with a prickly acidity that lingers on the finish.

New Week – New Arrivals

Oregon

We’re pleased to announce the return of Hundred Suns’ Willamette Valley wines. Winemakers Renée Saint-Amour (also the business manager) and Grant Coulter (also the label artist) decided not to make red Pinot Noir from the 2020 vintage (a sad fact for many of our local producers). Fortunately, they expanded into the Gorge and were able to release several unexpected yet delightful reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. There’s much to look forward to with this winery, especially as their newly replanted estate vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills begins its journey back to production. Here you go folks:

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Chardonnay, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $31.90 special, 24 bottles in stock now
Winery note “Old Eight Cut: A diamond cut dating back to the 1400s using simple tools and few cuts to enhance the natural brilliance of the stone without disguising its true nature. Layers of brioche, pear, and lemon bar with delicate richness and tense acidity. Winemaking: 2021 started with a warm spring and early bud break. Warm summer temperatures led into a cooler fall, and we harvested our collection of dry farmed vineyards starting on September 9th and finished the 12th. Grapes were pressed into French oak and fermented with indigenous yeast.”

Hundred Suns Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $31.90 special, 20 bottles in stock now
Winery note “An early spring kick-started the season, and yields were restricted by poor weather during cluster and flower development. Warm summer months brought this Gamay into full maturity and we hand-picked on September 25th. Hailing from Tualatin Estate Vineyard, this gamay was divided into three fermentation lots:  100% whole cluster, destemmed, and whole cluster in sealed tank. As a result, bright cranberry fruit and silky tannins marry with rich blueberry flavors and cocoa-like tannins to create balance and finish.”

Hundred Suns ‘Old Eight Cut’ Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2021 750ml $33 special, 35 bottles in stock now
Winery note “Tasting Notes: Fresh Rainier cherries and vibrant strawberry form a juicy mid-palette wrapped with layers of tea leaf, citrus rind, and complex spice. Beautifully balanced acid and structure make this wine punch way above its pay grade. 2021 Vintage & Vintification: This cellar selection stitches together pieces from unique sites across the Willamette Valley. Lots are fermented with native yeast & a variety of traditional & experimental techniques to create a layered wine of great complexity, but that is, first and foremost, totally delicious. 2021 started with below-average rains, leading into a warm spring and early bud break. Moderate yields and a warm summer gave us perfectly ripe flavors from our collection of dry-farmed vineyards. Picking started September 10th and finished October 2nd. Fermented with indigenous yeast and 30% whole cluster. This wine will drink best from 2023-2028.”

France – Rhône

Domaine Rene Rostaing Condrieu La Bonnette, Rhone 2020 750ml $89 special, 6 bottles in stock now
Jeb Dunnuck 92 points “Always beautiful, and a wine you don’t hear enough about, Rostaing’s 2020 Condrieu La Bonnette has vibrant notes of ripe peach, flowers, honeyed minerality, and even a kiss of green almond. More medium-bodied on the palate, it has the fresher, pure style of this estate, yet this is no mid-weight Condrieu either, and it has classic Viognier texture and length. It’s beautifully done.”
Wine Spectator 92 points “An enticing, slightly exotic white, featuring a mix of anise, green almond, green plum and apricot notes, with a subtle breeze of minerality through the finish giving it a nice underpinning. Drink now through 2024. 400 cases made.”

Germany

Weingut Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese 5, Mosel 2020 750ml $59 special, 24 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 97 points “Could a modern Mosel Spätlese be more classic than this? Stunningly ripe stone-fruit and floral character, married to considerable richness, with an almost buttery texture on the mid-palate. Long and succulent finish that remains fresh and vivid. Drink or hold.”
Mosel Fine Wines 96 points “The 2020er Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese AP 05 was made essentially from grapes harvested in the Gerdsgrub and Fergert sectors of the vineyard and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar. It proves still rather backward and marked by residual scents from its spontaneous fermentation. After a while subtly apricot-infused flavors of melon, cassis, blueberry, blackberry, and aniseed herbs emerge from the glass. The wine proves subtle, intensely cream, and nicely zesty on the palate and leaves a gorgeous feel of ripe and delicately exotic fruits in the long finish. The combination of dark fruits, whipped cream, and juicy acidity packed into mouthwatering sweetness are truly remarkable. 2030-2050.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points  “The 2020 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese #5 offers a deep and coolish, flinty and rather spicy more than fruity nose with piquant lemon and grapefruit as well as ripe and fine raisin aromas. Round, lush and precise on the filigreed palate, this is a beautifully elegant, piquant and fruity Spätlese with vibrantly fine acidity and crisp grape berry and apple fruit. Very delicate and digestible even at this early stage, with a tense, salty-mineral finish. 7.5% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in September 2021.”

Austria

Stuart Pigott 95 points
“A concentrated, medium-to full-bodied gruner with cool reine-claude plums, mini bananas and a ton of herbs and spices. Superb balance and a long, complex finish. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94 points “The 2019 Ried Kreutles Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a deep, intense, flinty and herbal-scented bouquet of perfectly ripe and healthy white fruits. Round, lush and intense on the palate, with a vital, persistently salty and finessed richness and crystalline structure, this is a highly elegant, refreshing and tensioned Kreutels of great class and style. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll Ried Loibenberg Gruner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2019 750ml $69 special, 18 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 96 points
“Predominantly from loess soils, the 2019 Ried Loibenberg Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is very stony and lemony on the distinctive nose of crushed stones and lemon zest. Round, dense and intense on the palate, this is a rich and powerful but elegant, finessed and persistently salty Loibenberg with remarkable freshness. Really powerful this year yet not alcoholic at all. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”
Stuart Pigott  95 points “The super ripe aromas of pears and mini bananas are married to a rich, silky palate, where the power is skillfully underplayed and the long, mineral finish glides over the palate. Drink or hold.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll Loibner Schutt Gruner Veltliner Smaragd, Wachau 2019 750ml $69 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott  97 points
“So concentrated, but also so elegant and finely nuanced with a whole forest of wild herbs. This has everything you look for in a high-end gruner veltliner. Grows and grows at the rich yet delicate finish. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate  96 points “The 2019 Ried Schütt Loibner Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is beautifully elegant, clear, refined and floral/herbal on the perfectly balanced nose that reveals notes of crushed stones and ripe pears. Lush, intense and powerful yet with great finesse and tension, this is a highly finessed and tensioned Veltliner with great elegance and clarity. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Weingut Emmerich Knoll Ried Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd, Wachau 2019 750ml $79 special, 5 bottles in stock now
Stuart Pigott 98 points
“Welcome to the tropical fruit store! So seductive, but not a jot massive and not a gram of excess fat on its rather full body. In fact, it’s very straight, in spite of a wave of papaya at the very long finish. Drink or hold.”
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate 94+ points “The 2019 Ried Loibenberg Loibner Riesling Smaragd is deep, intense and ripe on the nose but also pure and fresh, with notes of crushed stones and tropical yellow stone fruits. Dense and intense on the substantial palate, this is a full-bodied, concentrated and sustainably structured Loibenberg with great intensity, grip and mineral tension. The finish is very long, intense and quite powerful and still dominated by its ripe fruit. However, the 2019 Loibenberg Riesling will be a giant in about 10 years. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof im Weingebirge Smaragd Gruner Veltliner, Wachau 2017 750ml $69 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate  95+ points
“Bottled in April this year, the 2017 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is fascinatingly deep and refined on the complex, fresh, elegant and remarkably complex nose with its crystalline stone notes. On the palate, the wine reveals great finesse and elegance combined with substance, grip and sustainability. It is a full-bodied, powerful, rich and almost sweet, concentrated and tensioned terroir wine that is still young and ready to go a long distance. 13% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

Familie Saahs Nikolaihof Steinriesler Riesling, Wachau 2007 750ml $89 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Stephan Reinhardt-Wine Advocate  98 points
“Bottled in June 2019 after 12 years in a large oak vat, the 2007 Riesling Steinriesler is from the Vom Stein in Mautern and exhibits an intense and matured bouquet with caramel and leathery/feral as well as concentrated fruit but also crystalline, stony aromas. Deep, coolish and elegant. On the palate, this is a crystalline, refined and pure, very complex and concentrated wine with a great and complex finish that is structured, still tannic and seriously biting but with the right concentration and power for a long-distance run. It is mouth-watering, enormously tensioned and pushing on the finish. A great dry Riesling for real Riesling lovers. The wine should be decanted for maybe a day or two. 12% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

“Bottled in April this year, the 2016 Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd is perfectly ripe and concentrated on the precise, coolish and flinty nose that reveals apricot and white peach aromas. Full-bodied, round and crystalline, this is a fresh, very elegant and textural Vom Stein in a linear and classic style. The finish is intense and reveals firm tannins and makes this an excellent gastronomic wine. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in June 2021.”

A magnificent offering of fruit with a sense of subtlety.
Cristom ‘Mt. Jefferson Cuvee’ Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills 2021 750ML $39 special, 12 bottles in stock now
Winery Note
“This wine is a Cristom classic, 100% Pinot Noir, and exclusively from the Eola-Amity Hills. The 2021 Mt. Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir is crafted predominately from our renowned estate single vineyards – Eileen, Jessie, Louise, Marjorie and Paul Gerrie Vineyard – along with fruit from some of our finest partner vineyards. The variety of sources imbues the Mt. Jeff (as it’s affectionately known) with unique characteristics due to the diverse volcanic soils, elevations, and aspects. With 30 years dedicated to whole cluster fermentations and native yeasts, we consider the Mt. Jefferson Cuvée the embodiment of Cristom’s respected winemaking style. The wine is vibrant and fresh with popping acidity and an effusive strawberry and cherried character. With 46% whole cluster fermentation, the spice is effortlessly integrated into the wine with fine tannins. This vintage is simply outstanding.”

A classic and bold taste that provided an excellent introduction to the red wines of the Rhone region. Pairs well with savory treats, this Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre blend tastes like a meal in itself.

I Vigneri I Custodi delle Vigne dell’Etna ‘Pistus’ Etna Rosso, Sicily 2019 750ML $24 special, 23 bottles in stock now
Eric Guido-Vinous  91 points
“A vivid bouquet of fresh wild strawberries, minty herbs, exotic spices and the slightest hint of animal musk makes the 2019 Etna Rosso Pistus Contrada Muganazzi impossible to ignore. It soothes with soft, fleshy textures matched by ripe red berries, all kept in balance by enlivening acidity and minerals that create a more tactile impression toward the close. There’s such purity of fruit here, seeming more like juice than wine, as the 2019 tapers off with remarkable freshness, hints of licorice and a twang of salty minerals that lingers long. The Pistus, a blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio, hails from vines that average ten years old in the Contrada Muganazzi at 700 meters on the north face of Etna.”

G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont 2019 750ML $19.90 special, 34 bottles in stock now
Antonio Galloni – Vinous 89 points
“Vajra’s 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is a jewel of a wine. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal and spice lend complexity, but it is the wine’s balance and sheer deliciousness that stands out most. This is beautifully done”.

A magnificent Rioja that presents with modesty as its vibrant and fruity flavor draws one in for closer inspection.
Marques de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2017 750ML $26 special, 14 bottles in stock now
James Suckling 96 points
“Incredible depth and intensity on the nose with chocolate, walnut, blackberry and wet-earth aromas. Some iodine, too. All this follows through to a full body with very silky tannins that give the wine depth and length. It’s really framed beautifully. Reserved and tight at the finish. A terrific wine for the cellar. Give this three to five years to open.”
Decanter 94 points “A great classic, with a unique Rioja character, bursting with chewy red fruits, counterpointed by minerality. Reconciling power and finesse, pleasure and style. Warm and intense. Benchmark for wines of style, high-end brands. Leaves a vibrant memory.”
Luis Gutierrez – Wine Advocate 93 points “The red 2017 Rioja Reserva is their flagship wine, of which they produce 900,000 bottles exclusively from grapes from their 300 hectares of estate vineyards. It’s a blend of 83% Tempranillo, 9% Graciano, 6% Mazuelo (Cariñena) and 2% Garnacha and has the character of the vintage, ripe and warm but without excess. The varieties fermented separately, even different plots fermented separately, and they also aged in barrel on their own. The blend is done at the end, after 20 months in American oak barrels. 2017 was a challenging year that they still consider a better vintage than 2018, as they see more concentration and power. The wine is quite lactic and creamy, still showing very young. It does feel undeveloped and in need of some time in bottle. The wine has concentration and clout, and I always consider it an ultimate example of an updated classical Reserva from Rioja. 2017 was the earliest harvest (started and finished in September), a warm and dry year when the Ygay estate miraculously escaped the terrible frost that decimated most of Europe. The challenge for this wine was to contain the ripeness and power, and they have done it. This will be released in spring 2021, so it should be a lot more integrated by then. This is always a sure value. Volumes are lower this year.”

When considering a Rioja with subtlety, this light and breezy specimen delivers easy drinking at an incredible price point.
CVNE ‘Cune’ Ecologico – Organic, Rioja DOCa 2019 750ML $12.50 special, 36+ bottles in stock now
Luis Gutierrez-Wine Advocate 91 points
“There is a new organic red, the debut of which is the 2019 Cune Organic, a blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from external suppliers. That’s quite an unusual blend for them, as they tend to use more Tempranillo, and it brings a different combination of freshness and power. The grapes were handpicked and fermented separately by variety with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in used 300-liter oak barrels for six months. I nearly fell off my chair when I put my nose in the glass, as the wine screamed GARNACHA—but traditional Garnacha at its floral and herbal best, with the sweet cherry fruit, red licorice and the chalky tannins from the limestone soils. It’s balanced, tasty and juicy, truly delicious. The idea is to eventually produce this wine with their own grapes, as they are moving toward organic farming and removed herbicides years ago. They have never released a wine like this or such a young red. Amazing young Garnacha for the by-the-glass market. Bravo!”

This Argentine Malbec offers all one could desire in an introduction to this wonderful grape and winemaking region, making for a wine I would happily share with good friends seeking to accentuate a wonderful meal.
Familia Furlotti Malbec, Mendoza 2017 750ML $17.50 special, 22 bottles in stock now
James Suckling  92 points
“Plum, dried blueberry, sandalwood and walnut husk on the nose. Some nutmeg and tar. It’s medium-bodied with rounded tannins and a soft, silky finish. Turns slightly chewy at the end. Drinkable now but better in a year or two.”
Joaquin Hidalgo-Vinous 91 points “The 2017 Malbec Familia Furlotti is a blend of grapes from Lunlunta, Maipú and Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. This wine was 30% aged in used French barrels for eight months. Purplish-red in the glass. An accomplished Mendoza Malbec, it has a subtle, fruity nose of fresh plum, fragrant violets and notes from the aging process along with a hint of white pepper. Broad and juicy in the mouth with tannins that gently enhance the volume, this is an easy-drinking, flavorful wine.”

First Offer: Domaine Leflaive 2020s
Arriving Friday, October 14th

Domaine Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc, Burgundy 2020 750ml $149 pre-arrival special, only 12 bottles available
“Outstanding Top Value. A cool, pure and very pretty nose reflects notes of green apple, citrus and discreet spice wisps. There is very good delineation to the delicious middle weight flavors that are suffused with underlying tension and fine balance on the clean and dry finale. This is an excellent Bourgogne – moreover, it is one that should reward short to mid-term cellaring.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound

Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $249 pre-arrival special, only 3 bottles available
Burghound 90-92 points
“Outstanding. Smoky aromas of petrol, citrus confit and spicy pear lead to racy, elegant and more refined medium weight flavors that at once fine but dense, all wrapped in a solidly lengthy and beautifully well-balanced finale. This is already developing fine complexity and it has all it needs to reward up to a decade of keeping.”

The following Domaine Leflaive are not listed on our webstore per importer request. To order, call, email, or stop by!

Domaine Leflaive Clavoillon, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $349 pre-arrival special, only 6 bottles available
Burghound 91-94 points
“Outstanding. This is also sufficiently reduced to completely overshadow the underlying fruit. On the palate there is terrific, indeed almost painful, intensity to the medium weight flavors that flash the innate refinement of a fine Puligny before culminating in a very clean, sleek, bone-dry and chiseled finale. This is presently very tightly wound and a wine that definitely will need at least some patience. Excellent and this is a step up from its usual quality.”

Domaine Leflaive Les Pucelles, Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $999 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Burghound 93-96 points
“Sweet Spot Outstanding. Prominent notes of honeysuckle, Granny Smith apples, spice and a plenitude of spice elements are similarly wonderfully fresh and bright. The rich, delicious and succulent medium-bodied flavors also possess a highly sophisticated mouthfeel along with ample punch on the finely detailed, focused and hugely long finish. This too is a wine of class and grace that should age effortlessly over the next 12 to 15 years. A stunner of a Pucelles.”

Domaine Leflaive Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $1,899 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Burghound 95-97 points
“Don’t Miss! A wonderfully floral-suffused nose reflects additional notes of petrol, citrus, white orchard and a hint of oak toast. The bigger and richer flavors also possess a gorgeous mouthfeel that is almost delicate yet racy with excellent delineation on the youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finish that just goes on and on. This is potentially a magnificent Bâtard and it’s going to be interesting to compare this with the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet in a decade’s or so time. In sum, I would offer the same advice – if you can find it, buy it.”

Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $1,699 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Burghound 95-97 points
“Don’t Miss! As is often the case, the nose is aromatically quite similar to the Pucelles though it’s both spicier and more restrained. There is even better volume to the caressing and palate staining medium weight plus flavors that deliver strikingly good length on the clean, saline and sappy finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This beauty is positively brilliant and at the moment, it cedes nothing to the Bâtard, which is not always the case. If you can find it, buy it.”

Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru, Cote de Beaune 2020 750ml $2,499 pre-arrival special, only 1 bottle available
Burghound 96-98 points
“Don’t Miss! Strikingly elegant, cool and restrained aromas are comprised by notes of citrus confit, mineral reduction, anise, exotic tea and the classic acacia blossom nuances. The almost painfully intense medium-bodied flavors are at once succulent yet chiseled while the practically pungent minerality adds a sense of lift to the hugely long finish that is youthfully austere and Zen-like in its harmony. This is quite simply majestic in its class and grace and is a wine that should age effortlessly for years.”
